A Qualitative Exploration Of Adolescent Girls' Experience In An Eating Disorder Prevention Curriculum, Jill L. Smedley
A Qualitative Exploration Of Adolescent Girls' Experience In An Eating Disorder Prevention Curriculum, Jill L. Smedley
Theses and Dissertations
Eating disorders are a widespread problem that affects millions of people each year in the United States. Research-based prevention programs are becoming more and more important as this number rises. This study qualitatively examined the effectiveness of a prevention program called Eating Disorders: Physical, Social, and Emotional Consequences, A High School Curriculum about Anorexia, Bulimia, and Compulsive Eating (EDPSEC). Study participants included 10 female students in a ninth grade health class in a junior high school in Utah. The integrity of curriculum administration was analyzed and interviews were conducted. The aim of the interviews was to determine what students who …
The Realm Of The Real: Imitation And Authenticity In Edith Wharton's The Custom Of The Country, Brittany Brie Atkinson
The Realm Of The Real: Imitation And Authenticity In Edith Wharton's The Custom Of The Country, Brittany Brie Atkinson
Theses and Dissertations
Edith Wharton's 1913 novel The Custom of the Country reveals a national concern with defining and preserving authenticity in social and cultural life. A study of the novel through the lens of scholarship concerning the modernist obsession with "the real thing," including such seminal texts as Walter Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" and Lionel Trilling's Sincerity and Authenticity, opens up a broad discussion of authenticity and imitation as defined by Wharton's characters. This paper challenges the traditional interpretations of the much-abused term. First, I outline a brief history of the study of authenticity …
Dismissed With Prejudice: Gender Inequality In The Utah Legal Market, Collin Read Flake
Dismissed With Prejudice: Gender Inequality In The Utah Legal Market, Collin Read Flake
Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing feminization of the legal profession in the United States over the last half century, past research has documented the prevalence and transformation of gender inequality in law firms. However, relatively little is known about gender inequality in small, conservative legal markets like Utah. This thesis examines data from the 2008-2009 Utah Attorney Advancement and Retention Survey. The analyses indicate that relative to their male colleagues, women earned less in 2007 and are less likely to procure higher quality job assignments than their peers. The most promising explanations for these disparities include employment sector, gender and motherhood statuses, …

Overview And Guidance On Agile Development In Large Organizations, Jordan B. Barlow, Justin Scott Giboney, Mark Jeffrey Keith, David W. Wilson, Ryan M. Schuetzler, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Anthony Vance
Faculty Publications
A continual debate surrounds the effectiveness of agile software development practices. Some organizations adopt agile practices to become more competitive, improve processes, and reduce costs. Other organizations are skeptical about whether agile development is beneficial. Large organizations face an additional challenge in integrating agile practices with existing standards and business processes. To examine the effects of agile development practices in large organizations, we review and integrate scientific literature and theory on agile software development. We further organize our theory and observations into a framework with guidelines for large organizations considering agile methodologies. Based on this framework, we present recommendations that …

The King James Bible In America: Pilgrim, Prophet, President, Preacher, John S. Tanner
BYU Studies
John S. Tanner, BYU academic vice president (2004-2011), says the influence the King James Bible on American culture and history is like the air we breathe. This paper, given in 2011 at Oxford University, illustrates this influence by examining the central role the King James Bible played in the lives of a Pilgrim, John Winthrop; a prophet, Joseph Smith; a president, Abraham Lincoln; and a preacher, Martin Luther King Jr. Puritan leader John Winthrop's famous 1630 speech compared the Pilgrims bound for the Massachusetts Bay Colony to ancient Israel, as both sought a covenant with God in a promised land. …

High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Cyber Bullying Prevention And Intervention Strategies, Sterling V. Stauffer
High School Teachers' Perceptions Of Cyber Bullying Prevention And Intervention Strategies, Sterling V. Stauffer
Theses and Dissertations
Results from recent meta-analyses have indicated that bully prevention programs tend to produce little discernable change in student behavior. Possible reasons include a lack of teacher buy-in and teachers' questioning about the effectiveness of such programs. Teacher buy-in is an essential ingredient when implementing and maintaining effective school-based interventions, including bully prevention programs. In order to examine teachers' perceptions, a questionnaire was administered to 66 high school teachers in a western U.S. urban high school. The questionnaire examined teachers' attitudes regarding the impact of cyber bullying on students; which intervening strategies teachers were likely to use when dealing with cyber …
Photoemission From A Laser-Driven Electron Wave Packet, John Purvis Corson
Photoemission From A Laser-Driven Electron Wave Packet, John Purvis Corson
Theses and Dissertations
We use quantum electrodynamics (QED) to investigate the possibility of radiative interference from a single laser-driven electron wave packet. Intuition gleaned from classical electrodynamics suggests that radiation from a large electron wave packet might interfere destructively when different regions of the packet oscillate out of phase with each other. We show that when the incident light is represented with a multi-mode coherent state, the relative phases of the electron's constituent momenta have no influence of the amount of scattered light. Hence, the radiation does not depend on the amount of free-particle spreading experienced by the electron before the interaction. This …

Multiplicity: An Organizing Principle For Cancers And Somatic Mutations, Lewis J. Frey, Stephen R. Piccolo, Mary E. Edgerton
Faculty Publications
Background: With the advent of whole-genome analysis for profiling tumor tissue, a pressing need has emerged for principled methods of organizing the large amounts of resulting genomic information. We propose the concept of multiplicity measures on cancer and gene networks to organize the information in a clinically meaningful manner. Multiplicity applied in this context extends Fearon and Vogelstein’s multi-hit genetic model of colorectal carcinoma across multiple cancers.
Methods: Using the Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), we construct networks of interacting cancers and genes. Multiplicity is calculated by evaluating the number of cancers and genes linked by the measurement …
Embodied Culture: An Exploration Of Irish Dance Through Trauma Theory, Erica Burgin
Embodied Culture: An Exploration Of Irish Dance Through Trauma Theory, Erica Burgin
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines traditional Irish dance as a locus of cultural memory, inscribed on the body. The native people of Ireland experienced invasion and oppression for nearly a millennium, beginning with Viking invasions at the end of the 8th century and ending in the 1940s, when the British finally departed Ireland, now an independent country. During the years of English rule, the British imposed harsh laws and sought to eradicate all vestiges of Irish culture in an attempt to diminish Irish identity. Through the ages, the definition of what it means to be Irish has changed widely, frequently resulting in …
Indigenous Women College Students' Perspectives On College, Work, And Family, Jennie L. Bingham
Indigenous Women College Students' Perspectives On College, Work, And Family, Jennie L. Bingham
Theses and Dissertations
Native American and First Nations (hereafter referred to as indigenous) women college students are faced with a challenge to balance both their culture and the demands of the dominant Western culture in family, school, and work/employment roles. The presence of indigenous women in higher education and in the work force has increased since World War II. While there is an abundance of literature on work-family balance and work-family conflict, with some focus on the perspectives and expectations of college-aged students, there is a dearth in both of these areas with regards to indigenous populations. In order to begin to …

Three-Dimensional Galois Representations And A Conjecture Of Ash, Doud, And Pollack, Vinh Xuan Dang
Three-Dimensional Galois Representations And A Conjecture Of Ash, Doud, And Pollack, Vinh Xuan Dang
Theses and Dissertations
In the 1970s and 1980s, Jean-Pierre Serre formulated a conjecture connecting two-dimensional Galois representations and modular forms. The conjecture came to be known as Serre's modularity conjecture. It was recently proved by Khare and Wintenberger in 2008. Serre's conjecture has various important consequences in number theory. Most notably, it played a key role in the proof of Fermat's last theorem. A natural question is, what is the analogue of Serre's conjecture for higher dimensional Galois representations? In 2002, Ash, Doud and Pollack formulated a precise statement for a higher dimensional analogue of Serre's conjecture. They also provided numerous computational examples …
An Evaluation Of Constitutive Laws And Their Ability To Predict Flow Stress Over Large Variations In Temperature, Strain, And Strain Rate Characteristic Of Friction Stir Welding, Katherine Lynn Kuykendall
An Evaluation Of Constitutive Laws And Their Ability To Predict Flow Stress Over Large Variations In Temperature, Strain, And Strain Rate Characteristic Of Friction Stir Welding, Katherine Lynn Kuykendall
Theses and Dissertations
Constitutive laws commonly used to model friction stir welding have been evaluated, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and a new application of a constitutive law which can be extended to materials commonly used in FSW is presented. Existing constitutive laws have been classified as path-dependent or path-independent. Path-independent laws have been further classified according to the physical phenomena they capture: strain hardening, strain rate hardening, and/or thermal softening. Path-dependent laws can track gradients in temperature and strain rate characteristic to friction stir welding; however, path-independent laws cannot. None of the path-independent constitutive laws evaluated has been validated over the full range …
Effects Of Extended Explicit Systematic Phonics Instruction On Adult L2 Fluency, H. Vanessa Ocana
Effects Of Extended Explicit Systematic Phonics Instruction On Adult L2 Fluency, H. Vanessa Ocana
Theses and Dissertations
Reading may be viewed as an invisible skill, and some may even consider it a passive skill. However, reading is an active and complex skill. It requires one to use a wide range of skills simultaneously to achieve fluency. Hence, it is crucial to learn and use strategies to master such a complex skill. Today, research states that fluent reading includes using top-down and bottom-up strategies, or an interactive approach, to truly become a fluent reader. In fact, research has shown the effects that all three models have had on students. More specifically, L1 studies have shown positive effects in …

Getting More Media Bang For Your Buck: Understanding Attitudes And Beliefs Toward Internet, Television, And Print Advertising, Ashley Stevens
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the following study is to provide advertisers with a better understanding of how Internet, television, and print media influence the perceptions of an advertisement and how those perceptions can influence purchasing behavior. This study uses Q Methodology, a methodology used to measure attitudes and beliefs. Three distinct groups emerged from the data labeled the Avoiders, the Traditionalists, and the Actives. Avoiders sought to bypass advertising, Traditionalists showed a liking toward traditional forms of advertising, and Actives were neither seeking out nor abstaining from viewing advertising. All three groups showed distrust toward Internet advertising.

Cry The Beloved Media: New Media And Student Perceptions In A World Literature Classroom, Timbre Janiece Newby Greenwood
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative action research project addressed the infusion of media literacy and new media into a standard secondary English language arts curriculum. In examining students' perceptions of South Africa as they interacted with new media texts in conjunction with the traditional literary text Cry, the Beloved Country, this study also explored the manner in which students' media interactions informed their reading of the novel. As a result of the research data, the author asserts that media literacy education can, in fact, play an effective role in teaching literature within the world literature classroom.
Henry Wirz And Andersonville: The Career Of The Most Controversial Swiss American, Albert Winkler
Henry Wirz And Andersonville: The Career Of The Most Controversial Swiss American, Albert Winkler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
While many Americans of Swiss descent have made valuable contributions
to the development of the United States, Henry Wirz has often
been viewed with disdain. He was the commander of the infamous Andersonville
prison where nearly 13,000 Union prisoners died during the
American Civil War, and he was one of the two men executed for war
crimes relating to that conflict. Despite his conviction in court, much
controversy surrounds his actions at Andersonville, and many writers
have either condemned or praised him. This paper will review the career
of Henry Wirz, examine his conduct at Andersonville, and analyze his
trial …
Things Are In People, People Are In Things: A Phenomenological Approach To H.D.'S Hermione And The Modernist Prosthetic Body, Alison Stone Roberg
Things Are In People, People Are In Things: A Phenomenological Approach To H.D.'S Hermione And The Modernist Prosthetic Body, Alison Stone Roberg
Theses and Dissertations
H.D.'s autobiographical novel HERmione is phenomenological in texture. It portrays both sides of a dynamic process: the individual "creates" the world by adjusting a "psychic lens," projecting a mental space in which objects can appear; yet at the same time, the world imposes itself on the sensing subject. The framework within which this dynamic process occurs is the body; as the novel portrays, the body is the site of juxtapositions and transformations as it comes into contact with the world. In this article, I discuss the ways in which H.D. explores the boundaries and intersections between the human body and …

Henry Wirz And Andersonville: The Career Of The Most Controversial Swiss American, Albert Winkler
Faculty Publications
Henry Wirz is the most controversial Swiss American. He was assigned to oversee the Andersonville Prison during the Civil War, and he was blamed for the high death rate in that prison even though he had no means of getting additional food and supplies to the captives. He was tried for war crimes after the Civil War. He was not allowed an adequate defense at his trial, and he was found guilty in a travesty of justice. He refused an offer of clemency if he would implicate Jefferson Davis and other high Confederate officials in a plot to kill Union …
The Terminal Classic At El Mirador, Peten, Guatemala., Richard M. Allen
The Terminal Classic At El Mirador, Peten, Guatemala., Richard M. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Recent excavations uncovered numerous small rooms constructed on top of the Danta Acropolis at El Mirador, Guatemala. The characteristics of the settlement and the material items indicated that it was a late occupation and lacked the features associated with large Maya polities and Classic Maya culture. This thesis focused on describing the continuities and changes that occurred from the Late Classic to the Terminal Classic at El Mirador based on the ceramic assemblage and architecture. Significant continuity and stability of the pottery making community is reflected in the ceramic assemblage. Additionally, it was desirable to gain an understanding of how …
Proofs Of Correctness For Three Decentralized Authentication Protocols Using Strand Spaces, Pavan Kumar Vankamamidi
Proofs Of Correctness For Three Decentralized Authentication Protocols Using Strand Spaces, Pavan Kumar Vankamamidi
Theses and Dissertations
Security is a major concern is today's online world. As online activities become increasingly sensitive, service providers rely on security protocols to ensure confidentiality, integrity and authentication of their users and data. Greater assurance is provided when these protocols are verified to be correct. Strand Spaces is a method to formally analyze security protocols. The arguments are based on the messages being transmitted and received while assuming that the underlying cryptographic primitives are secure. This thesis demonstrates that the protocols Luau, pwdArmor and Kiwi are secure using Strand Spaces methodology.
The Passive Load-Bearing Capacity Of The Human Lumbar Spine In The Neutral Standing Posture, Shaun B. Jeffs
The Passive Load-Bearing Capacity Of The Human Lumbar Spine In The Neutral Standing Posture, Shaun B. Jeffs
Theses and Dissertations
The human lumbar spine has been shown to support compressive loads of 1000 N in standing and walking, and up to many thousands of Newtons in strenuous activities such as lifting. The literature presents a number of biomechanical models that seek to replicate the load-carrying capacity of the spine while adhering to physiological constraints. While many of these models provide invaluable insights into the mechanisms governing spinal stability, there is a nearly universal disregard for the magnitude of the muscle forces required in the neutral standing posture. In compliance with constraints on metabolic cost and muscle fatigue, muscle activations in …
