Journal of Undergraduate Research
All civilizations have used plants and their byproducts to effectively grow and cultivate crops, as well as manage and treat many ailments. Even today, approximately 25% of prescribed medications are constituted by plants. Many of the active metabolites are produced in such small quantities that mass production by using the plant is unreasonable. However, the endophytes found within plants tend to produce the same metabolites. These fungi and bacteria commonly produce secondary metabolites possessing antibacterial, antifungal or other medicinal properties. By looking to historical medicinal plants, novel endophytes and metabolites have been discovered and integrated into agriculture and medicine. One …

It is estimated that 5.2 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. It is currently the 6th leading cause of death in America, killing around 500,000 seniors every year. A 68% increase of death from Alzheimer’s disease was observed from the year 2000 to 2010. These numbers are expected to continue climbing.

Methamphetamine is an extremely addictive drug that acts on the pleasure center of the brain. It causes an increase in the release of dopamine (DA) into the synaptic cleft. This rapid release of DA causes the “rush” felt by drug users. It also causes severe malfunctions in the brain such as anxiety, mood disorders, increased violence, reduced motor skills, impaired verbal learning, and psychosis. Among other things, the cause for these harmful effects could be related to Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and their resulting oxidative damage. Utah’s rocks, though incredibly complete in later eons, hold very little information about what was occurring in that area before 700 million years ago. In Southern Utah, only two relatively small exposures of these ancient Precambrian exist, in the west of the Beaver Dam Mountains west of St. George and the west of the Mineral Mountains west of Beaver. Therefore, it is vitally important to study these exposures, as they constitute the only clues to what was happening in Utah 1.7 billion years ago.

Perceptions Of Aggression In Turkish Adolescents, Stacy Victoria Call, David Nelson

The adolescent years have been described as a “unique developmental period wherein relationships become increasingly important and intimate.”1 This being said, many relationships can become tainted or ruined when injured with aggression. Studies have shown that many adolescents are involved in physical and/or relational aggression.2 One study by Crick and Grotpeter found that children that are aggressive are at risk for serious adjustment difficulties, including being significantly more rejected, higher levels of loneliness, depression, and isolation.3 This study was performed to evaluate what different methods of aggression were more common in Turkish 7th graders.

How Users Perceive And Respond To Security Messages: A Neurois Research Agenda And Empirical Study, Bonnie Anderson, Anthony Vance, C. Brock Kirwan, David Eargle, Jeffrey Jenkins

Users are vital to the information security of organizations. In spite of technical safeguards, users make many critical security decisions. An example is users' responses to security messages—discrete communication designed to persuade users to either impair or improve their security status. Research shows that although users are highly susceptible to malicious messages (e.g., phishing attacks), they are highly resistant to protective messages such as security warnings. Research is therefore needed to better understand how users perceive and respond to security messages. In this article, we argue for the potential of NeuroIS—cognitive neuroscience applied to information system (IS)—to shed new light …
