Developing A Teachers' Handbook For Content-Based Instruction At Brigham Young University's English Language Center, Melinda Clement Hardman Apr 2009

Developing A Teachers' Handbook For Content-Based Instruction At Brigham Young University's English Language Center, Melinda Clement Hardman

Theses and Dissertations

In Winter semester of 2005 the English Language Center (ELC) began plans to implement a content-based program for students at its highest proficiency level in order to provide them with more effective preparation for academic studies in English. Since that time, the program has undergone various changes to provide a more stable, cohesive, and responsive curriculum. There is a need, however, for greater teacher support and training. This paper outlines the process I underwent to create a handbook that would provide needed guidance and training for teachers in this program. This project involved an in-depth needs analysis of teachers and …

The Role Of Connexin-36 Gap Junctions In Alcohol Intoxication And Reward, Kathryn Diane Bradley Apr 2009

The Role Of Connexin-36 Gap Junctions In Alcohol Intoxication And Reward, Kathryn Diane Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis project was to examine the function of connexin-36 (Cx36) gap junctions (GJs) in producing alcohol's intoxicating and rewarding effects. GABA neurons are thought to inhibit dopamine (DA) neurotransmission in the mesocorticolimbic system, which originates in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projects to limbic structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). The mesolimbic DA system is believed to be the neural substrate of alcohol intoxication and addiction (Tepper, Paladini, & Celada, 1998). Alcohol suppresses the firing rate of GABA neurons in the VTA (Gallegos, Criado, Lee, Henriksen, & Steffensen, 1999) and presumably disinhibits DA …

Synthesis Of 2,4,5-Triaminocyclohexane Carboxylic Acid As A Novel 2-Deoxystreptamine Mimetic, Sarah Elizabeth Roberts Apr 2009

Synthesis Of 2,4,5-Triaminocyclohexane Carboxylic Acid As A Novel 2-Deoxystreptamine Mimetic, Sarah Elizabeth Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

RNAs have become increasingly recognized as possible drug targets due to their involvement in important biochemical functions, as well as their unique but well-defined structures. Recently published crystal structures depict the binding of a series of aminoglycosides- or more specifically- 2-deoxystretamine (2-DOS), the most preserved central scaffold of aminoglycosides, to a conserved 5'-GU-3'region on their target RNAs. A novel unnatural γ-amino acid, 1, has been synthesized using 2-deoxystreptamine as a template through structure-based rational design. The unnatural amino acid has been designed to replace a glycosidic linkage with an amide bond, which may limit the promiscuous binding characteristics of aminoglycosides …

Molecular Systematics Of Spiny Pocket Mice (Subfamily Heteromyinae) Inferred From Mitochondrial And Nuclear Sequence Data, Melina Crystal Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to determine species-level relationships within the genus Heteromys, as well as generic-level relationships among members of the subfamily Heteromyinae using a phylogenetic framework. Molecular sequence data were generated from two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase I) and three nuclear gene segments (β-fibrinogen, engrailed protein II, and myosin heavy chain II), and analyzed under maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian optimality criteria to infer relationships. Chapter 1 focuses on the phylogenetic and taxonomic implications for Heteromys from the analyses of sequence data. Phylogenies also provided a framework for delimiting species boundaries within the wide-ranging Heteromys desmarestianus …

The present study was only focused on the exam's construct validity. In an effort to validate the LAT, various models of reading comprehension were examined with the purpose of defining the construct of academic reading comprehension. The TOEFL academic reading framework was chosen to be the construct …

Xprime: A Method Incorporating Expert Prior Information Into Motif Exploration, Rachel Lynn Poulsen Apr 2009

Xprime: A Method Incorporating Expert Prior Information Into Motif Exploration, Rachel Lynn Poulsen

Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary goals of active research in molecular biology is to better understand the process of transcription regulation. An important objective in understanding transcription is identifying transcription factors that directly regulate target genes. Identifying these transcription factors is a key step toward eliminating genetic diseases or disease susceptibilities that are encoded inside deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). There is much uncertainty and variation associated with transcription factor binding sites, requiring these sites to be represented stochastically. Although typically each transcription factor prefers to bind to a specific DNA word, it can bind to different variations of that DNA word. In …

Role Of Molecular Chaperones In G Protein B5-Regulator Of G Protein Signaling Dimer Assembly And G Protein By Dimer Specificity, Alyson Cerny Howlett Apr 2009

Role Of Molecular Chaperones In G Protein B5-Regulator Of G Protein Signaling Dimer Assembly And G Protein By Dimer Specificity, Alyson Cerny Howlett

Theses and Dissertations

In order for G protein signaling to occur, the G protein heterotrimer must be assembled from its nascent polypeptides. The most difficult step in this process is the formation of the Gβγ dimer from the free subunits since both are unstable in the absence of the other. Recent studies have shown that phosducin-like protein (PhLP1) works as a co-chaperone with the cytosolic chaperonin complex (CCT) to fold Gβ and mediate its interaction with Gγ. However, these studies did not address questions concerning the scope of PhLP1 and CCT-mediated Gβγ assembly, which are important questions given that there are four Gβs …

Enhancing Evolution: Posthumanous Dreams And The Moral Complexity Of Biomedical Aspirations, David L. Paulsen, Clark H. Pinnock Apr 2009

Enhancing Evolution: Posthumanous Dreams And The Moral Complexity Of Biomedical Aspirations, David L. Paulsen, Clark H. Pinnock

BYU Studies

A noted academic bioethicist and British media pundit with a named chair at the University of Manchester, John Harris has recently given birth to an odd literary child. His latest book, Enhancing Evolution: The Ethical Case for Making Better People, hails from an esteemed university press, but it is informal and tendentious, often jeering at opponents, both popular and academic. Despite his credentials (an Oxford PhD in philosophy, co-editorship of the British Journal of Medical Ethics, a lengthy curriculum vitae), Harris has created a popular polemic better fitted for the entertaining and energetic repartee of the Daily Show with Jon …

Theology And Down Syndrome: Reimagining Disability In Late Modernity, Amos Yong, Rosalynde F. Welch Apr 2009

Theology And Down Syndrome: Reimagining Disability In Late Modernity, Amos Yong, Rosalynde F. Welch

BYU Studies

Amos Yong's Theology and Down Syndrome represents an ambitious attempt by an Evangelical theologian to come to grips with the conditions and conundrums of disability in a contemporary Christian context. The book's nine chapters and formidable bibliography inquire into cognitive disability of all kinds, not, despite its title, narrowly into Down syndrome alone. Yong writes in the dense idiom of critical academic theology and disability studies that may put off some readers, but the text is leavened with epigraphs, personal asides, and case studies that will appeal to most readers.

Yong sets himself three aims in this volume: to edify …

Functionalization, Characterization, And Applications Of Diamond Particles, Modification Of Planar Silicon, And Chemoetrics Analysis Of Ms Data, Li Yang Mar 2009

Functionalization, Characterization, And Applications Of Diamond Particles, Modification Of Planar Silicon, And Chemoetrics Analysis Of Ms Data, Li Yang

Theses and Dissertations

In spite of the stablility (lack of reactivity) of diamond powder, I have developed a method for tethering alkyl chains and polymers to deuterium/hydrogen-terminated diamond. One method is through ether linkages via thermolysis of di-tert-amyl peroxide (DTAP). This reaction with DTAP has also been applied to grow polymers on the diamond surface. The other method is atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which was applied to grow polystyrene at the surface of diamond. Both polystyrene-modified diamond and sulfonated polystyrene-modified diamond can be prepared by either method, and can be used for solid phase extraction. Diamond stationary phases are stable under basic …

Laser Levitation Of Solid Particles For Combustion And Gasification Applications, Skigh E. Lewis Mar 2009

Laser Levitation Of Solid Particles For Combustion And Gasification Applications, Skigh E. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation details theoretical and experimental work in the development of a novel combustion diagnostic: laser levitation of solid particles. Theoretical analyses of the forces involved in the suspension of solid particles in a laser beam provide a comprehensive description of the levitation mechanism. Experimental work provides extensive observations and data that describe each of the forces involved, including results from detailed models. Theoretical models establish that a free-convective drag force, light scattering, photon momentum, and other minor forces contribute to the trapping mechanism. The theory quantitatively predicts particle temperature and magnitudes of each of the forces involved. Experimental measurements …

The First Attachment And Post-Functionalization Of Polybutadiene And Thio-Click Functionalized Polybutadiene On H-Terminated Si(111), Todd Devere Wickard Mar 2009

The First Attachment And Post-Functionalization Of Polybutadiene And Thio-Click Functionalized Polybutadiene On H-Terminated Si(111), Todd Devere Wickard

Theses and Dissertations

I report the attachment of polymers with pendant vinyl groups to hydrogen-terminated silicon(111) (Si(111)-H) under mild conditions. 1,2-addition polybutadiene (Mw 3200-3500) was attached to Si(111)-H at room temperature with visible light. I also report the partial functionalization, in solution, of 1,2-addition polybutadiene with various thiols using thiol-click chemistry. These compounds bind to Si(111)-H via visible light activation. The partially functionalized polybutadienes allow further functionalization at the surface through unreacted carbon-carbon double bonds. Surfaces were characterized with contact angle goniometry, spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Phosphorus Fractionation And Distribution Across Delta Of Deer Creek Reservoir, Warren C. Casbeer Mar 2009

Phosphorus Fractionation And Distribution Across Delta Of Deer Creek Reservoir, Warren C. Casbeer

Theses and Dissertations

Eutrophication of reservoir systems, which causes deterioration of water quality through increased algal growth, is detrimental to our sustainable water supply and additionally impairs other beneficial reservoir uses. Limiting the amount of phosphorus (P) entering the system has been the key management tool for this problem, as P is the main limiting nutrient for plant and algal growth. These efforts have focused on controlling input of P from point sources, such as effluents from wastewater treatment plants, dairies, and industrial factories. Even in systems (such as reservoirs) with significantly reduced external P loading, however, there has been continued eutrophication and …

The Social Strategies And Goals Of Children With Language Impairment And Typically Developing Children, Veronica Gardner Mar 2009

The Social Strategies And Goals Of Children With Language Impairment And Typically Developing Children, Veronica Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Past research has indicated that children with language impairment (LI) struggle more than children with typical language in their social interactions (Fujiki, Brinton, & Todd, 1999). The purpose of this study was to determine if the social strategies and goals of children with LI varied from those of children with typically developing language. A social goals questionnaire was used to determine the strategies the children verbally indicated that they would use. The children were then asked why they would use the selected strategy. The responses were then separated into goal categories. A chi-square analysis indicated that children with LI varied …

Fremont Site Distribution In The Upper Escalante River Drainage, Deborah C. Harris Mar 2009

Fremont Site Distribution In The Upper Escalante River Drainage, Deborah C. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

A Fremont site distribution model for the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument during the period A.D. 500—1050/1100 posits that the Fremont subsistence strategy (seasonal mobility with dependence on both agriculture and hunting/foraging) is reflected by a site pattern of low-investment, seasonal or short-term habitation sites and isolated storage facilities at "lowland" elevations, and high-investment, long-term residence sites at "upland" elevations (McFadden 1998, 2000). This research assesses the model to evaluate its general precision, looking particularly at its success in modeling site locations for long-term residential versus seasonal/short-term habitation sites. A database including more than 400 Fremont sites was created to evaluate …

Compact Trench Based Bend And Splitter Devices For Silicon-On-Insulator Rib Waveguides, Yusheng Qian Mar 2009

Compact Trench Based Bend And Splitter Devices For Silicon-On-Insulator Rib Waveguides, Yusheng Qian

Theses and Dissertations

Bends and splitters are typically the fundamental limiting waveguide components in reducing the size of planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) based on waveguides that have a low core/clad refractive index contrast, such as silicon-on-insulator (SOI) rib waveguides. This dissertation presents a solution to this problem in the form of trench-based bends (TBBs) and trench-based splitters (TBSs). Emphasis is placed on experimental demonstration of these components and their integration into practical devices exhibiting significant size reduction. First, a compact and low loss silicon-on-insulator rib waveguide 90◦ TBB is demonstrated based on an etched vertical interface and total internal reflection (TIR) realized by …

French Laïcité And The Popularity Of The Pacs, Ashley Gaylene Trupp Mattson Mar 2009

French Laïcité And The Popularity Of The Pacs, Ashley Gaylene Trupp Mattson

Theses and Dissertations

Civil unions are currently a divisive issues in the United States. Religion has historically influenced these debates. The French version of civil union, the Pacte Civil de Solidarité (Pacs,) was created in 1999 after seven years of debate. Many have written about the Pacs in the last decade. However, few have explored the direct correlations with France's relationship with Catholicism, her dominant religion that is doctrinally opposed to any sexual relationships outside of marriage. Laïcité has influenced a steady decrease in religiosity among French Catholics. This thesis explores the impact of this religious decline on the creation and surprising popularity …

A Comparison Of Mathematical Discourse In Online And Face-To-Face Environments, Shawn D. Broderick Mar 2009

A Comparison Of Mathematical Discourse In Online And Face-To-Face Environments, Shawn D. Broderick

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have been done on the impact of online mathematics courses. Most studies concluded that there is no significant difference in student success between online and face-to-face courses. However, most studies compared "traditional" online and face-to-face courses. Mathematics educators are advocating a shift from traditional courses to student-centered courses where students argue and defend the mathematics under the guidance of the teacher. Now, the differences in online and face-to-face student-centered mathematical courses merit a more in-depth investigation. This study characterized student mathematical discourse in online and face-to-face Calculus lab sections based off of a framework derived from an NCTM …

Alternating Links And Subdivision Rules, Brian Craig Rushton Mar 2009

Alternating Links And Subdivision Rules, Brian Craig Rushton

Theses and Dissertations

The study of geometric group theory has suggested several theorems related to subdivision tilings that have a natural hyperbolic structure. However, few examples exist. We construct subdivision tilings for the complement of every nonsingular, prime alternating link and all torus links, and explore some of their properties and applications. Several examples are exhibited with color coding of tiles.

Specifically, emerging adults with higher financial criteria and who received more parental financial assistance were more likely to report not …

Real-Time Wind Estimation And Video Compression Onboard Miniature Aerial Vehicles, Andres Felipe Rodriguez Perez Mar 2009

Real-Time Wind Estimation And Video Compression Onboard Miniature Aerial Vehicles, Andres Felipe Rodriguez Perez

Theses and Dissertations

Autonomous miniature air vehicles (MAVs) are becoming increasingly popular platforms for the collection of data about an area of interest for military and commercial applications. Two challenges that often present themselves in the process of collecting this data. First, winds can be a significant percentage of the MAV's airspeed and can affect the analysis of collected data if ignored. Second, the majority of MAV's video is transmitted using RF analog transmitters instead of the more desirable digital video due to the computational intensive compression requirements of digital video. This two-part thesis addresses these two challenges. First, this thesis presents an …

Biogeography Of The Livebearing Fish Poecilia Gillii In Costa Rica: Are Phylogeographic Breaks Congruent With Fish Community Boundaries?, Jared Benjamin Lee Mar 2009

Biogeography Of The Livebearing Fish Poecilia Gillii In Costa Rica: Are Phylogeographic Breaks Congruent With Fish Community Boundaries?, Jared Benjamin Lee

Theses and Dissertations

One of the original goals of phylogeography was to use genetic data to identify historical events that might contribute to breaks among biotic communities. In this study, we examine the phylogeography of a common livebearing fish (Poecilia gillii) from Costa Rica. Our goal was to see if phylogeographic breaks in this species were congruent with previously-defined boundaries among four fish community provinces. We hypothesized that if abiotic factors influence both community boundaries and genetic structuring in P. gillii then we would find four monophyletic clades within our focal species that were geographically separated along community boundary lines. Similarly, we expected …

A Dynamic Attribute-Based Data Filtering And Recovery Scheme For Web Information Processing, Amit Ahuja, Yiu-Kai D. Ng Mar 2009

A Dynamic Attribute-Based Data Filtering And Recovery Scheme For Web Information Processing, Amit Ahuja, Yiu-Kai D. Ng

Faculty Publications

Web data being transmitted over a network channel on the Internet with excessive amount of data causes data processing problems, which include selectively choosing useful information to be retained for various data applications. In this paper, we present an approach for filtering less-informative attribute data from a source Website. A scheme for filtering attributes, instead of tuples (records), from a Website becomes imperative, since filtering a complete tuple would lead to filtering some informative, as well as less-informative, attribute data in the tuple. Since filtered data at the source Website may be of interest to the user at the destination …

Stochastic Spatio-Temporal Uncertainty In Gis-Based Water Quality Modeling Of The Land Water Interface, Ahmad Mohamad Salah Feb 2009

Stochastic Spatio-Temporal Uncertainty In Gis-Based Water Quality Modeling Of The Land Water Interface, Ahmad Mohamad Salah

Theses and Dissertations

Integrated water resources management has been used for decades in various formats. The limited resources and the ever growing population keep imposing pressure on decision makers to better-, and reliably, manage the available waters. On the other hand, the continuous development in computing and modeling power has helped modelers and decision makers considerably. To use these models, assumptions have to be made to fill in the gaps of missing data and to approximate the current conditions. The type and amount of information available can also be used to help select the best model from the currently available models. Advances in …

Small Mammals In Portions Of Great Basin National Park Susceptible To Groundwater Withdrawal: Diversity And Stable Isotope Perspectives, Bryan T. Hamilton Feb 2009

Small Mammals In Portions Of Great Basin National Park Susceptible To Groundwater Withdrawal: Diversity And Stable Isotope Perspectives, Bryan T. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

To support population growth in Las Vegas, Nevada, large scale increases in groundwater pumping are planned across the state. This pumping could affect riparian areas in Great Basin National Park by lowering groundwater levels, reducing stream flows, and xerifying riparian vegetation. Great Basin National Park (GBNP) is mandated to manage its resources unimpaired for future generations. Loss of biodiversity is unacceptable under this mandate. If groundwater levels are reduced beyond a threshold, aquatic and riparian diversity would be lost, but the effects on small mammal communities are less clear. To provide baseline information and to consider the effects of groundwater …
