Design And Analysis Of A Compliant Mechanism Spinal Implant, Eric M. Stratton
Design And Analysis Of A Compliant Mechanism Spinal Implant, Eric M. Stratton
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis introduces and presents the modeling of a novel compliant spinal implant designed to reduce back pain and restore function to degenerate spinal disc tissues as well as provide a mechanical environment conducive to healing the tissues. The initial objectives for this device development and the focus of this work are modeling and validation of the force-deflection relationships and stress analysis. Modeling was done using the pseudo-rigid-body model to create a 3 degree of freedom mechanism for flexion-extension (forward-backward bending) and a 5 degree of freedom mechanism for lateral bending (side-to-side). These models were analyzed using the principle of …
Student Content Knowledge Increases After Participation In A Hands-On Biotechnology Intervention, Amber L. Bigler
Student Content Knowledge Increases After Participation In A Hands-On Biotechnology Intervention, Amber L. Bigler
Theses and Dissertations
Hands-on learning is at the heart of science learning. This study examined increased changes of student content knowledge in biology, particularly biotechnology, after a hands-on biotechnology intervention was implemented into a secondary school. A traditional learning school was selected for a control. Both teachers had participated in a biotechnology professional development program called Project Crawfish. Students from both schools took the same assessment before and after their respective units (biotechnology intervention and genetics unit), and the classroom was the unit of analysis (n=5, n=6, respectively). The assessment was compared as a whole and then divided into five components, eight questions …
Assessing Scientific Inquiry: Teacher Beliefs And Practices, Adam James Mitchell
Assessing Scientific Inquiry: Teacher Beliefs And Practices, Adam James Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
Science education reform movements have long urged the use of inquiry methods in all science instruction. More recently, standards and accountability reform efforts have emphasized measuring and improving student science achievement. Researchers have questioned the alignment and balance between these reforms (Lane, 2004; Yeh, 2001). This study addresses issues faced by secondary science teachers as they simultaneously meet the goals of these reform movements. Mixed methods were used to answer the questions: 1) Can a teacher's beliefs and practices regarding inquiry teaching methods be correlated with his/her assessment practices?; 2) What item types are most commonly employed by teachers that …
Fabricating Womanhood, Emily Fox
Fabricating Womanhood, Emily Fox
Theses and Dissertations
The exhibit, Fabricating Womanhood, was an attempt to explore the construction of gender and identity. While the artwork addressed well researched and documented feminist themes the artwork also stemmed from personal experiences and my coming-of-age process. The resulting installation included video, prints, painting, ceramics and found objects arranged in a set-like house construction of life-size proportions.
Epicene Pronoun Use In Modern American English, Robin Montgomery Watson
Epicene Pronoun Use In Modern American English, Robin Montgomery Watson
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional prescriptive grammar for English states that the epicene or gender neutral pronoun for third person singular use is he. Research into speaker perceptions has clearly demonstrated that he is not perceived as neutral. Research has also shown traditionally proscribed epicene pronouns such as he or she and singular they to be commonly used, despite the long-standing proscriptions against them. The author examines the endurance of such proscribed options through the lens of markedness theory, considering the impact of cultural values on speakers' epicene pronoun choices. Gender in language is also considered, as well as Kuryłowicz‘s 4th Law of …

Cluster And Classification Analysis Of Fossil Invertebrates Within The Bird Spring Formation, Arrow Canyon, Nevada: Implications For Relative Rise And Fall Of Sea-Level, Scott L. Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Carbonate strata preserve indicators of local marine environments through time. Such indicators often include microfossils that have relatively unique conditions under which they can survive, including light, nutrients, salinity, and especially water temperature. As such, microfossils are environmental proxies. When these microfossils are preserved in the rock record, they constitute key components of depositional facies. Spence et al. (2004, 2007) has proposed several approaches for determining the facies of a given stratigraphic succession based upon these proxies. Cluster analysis can be used to determine microfossil groups that represent specific environmental conditions. Identifying which microfossil groups exist through time can indicate …
Diet Reconstruction Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Using Stable Isotopes, Joshua M. Whitaker
Diet Reconstruction Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Using Stable Isotopes, Joshua M. Whitaker
Theses and Dissertations
We determined the diet contributions of grasses, forbs and shrubs for three herds of bighorn sheep along the Wasatch Front, Utah using stable isotope techniques and determined the electivity values for different forage species for four herds. Forbs were generally the most common forage eaten across all herds while shrubs were the least used forage resource. The Provo Peak and Mount Nebo herds used grasses, forbs and shrubs at proportions similar to other bighorn sheep populations across the west, while the Antelope Island herd used forbs at higher levels than any other local herd. Additionally, the herd on Antelope Island …

Gene Flow And Dispersal Of The Caddisfly, Neothremma Alicia, In The Rocky Mountains Of Utah: A Multiscale Analysis, Xioben Jiang
Theses and Dissertations
We determined genetic variance and gene flow across multiple scales (reaches, tributaries, and catchments) to examine the dispersal ability of the caddisfly, Neothremma alicia in streams along the Wasatch Range in the Rocky Mountains of Utah. Neothremma alicia is one of the most abundant caddisflies in this region. We generated DNA sequence data (mitochondrial COI) from 34 reaches, nested in 15 tributaries distributed across 3 adjacent catchments. We identified 47 haplotypes from a total of 486 individuals. The most abundant haplotype (H1) was found at all sites/reaches and comprised 44% of the total number of individuals sequenced. The remaining rare …
Predation Of Adult Razorback Sucker And Bonytail By Striped Bass In Lake Mohave, Arizona–Nevada, Abraham P. Karam, Paul C. Marsh
Predation Of Adult Razorback Sucker And Bonytail By Striped Bass In Lake Mohave, Arizona–Nevada, Abraham P. Karam, Paul C. Marsh
Western North American Naturalist
We report 2 separate records from sport-fish anglers in Lake Mohave, Arizona–Nevada, that document the presence of endangered razorback sucker Xyrauchen texanus and bonytail Gila elegans in stomach contents of large (13+ kg) nonnative striped bass Morone saxatilis. These records suggest that striped bass, since their first appearance in Lake Mohave nearly 3 decades ago, may have played a role in population declines of the other 2 species. Current native-fish stocking programs at Lake Mohave continue to face significant obstacles to achieving population recoveries because all life stages of repatriated individuals, including mature adults, are vulnerable to predation.
Ribosomal Rna Mutations That Inhibit The Activity Of Transfer-Messenger Rna Of Stalled Ribosomes, Jacob N. Crandall
Ribosomal Rna Mutations That Inhibit The Activity Of Transfer-Messenger Rna Of Stalled Ribosomes, Jacob N. Crandall
Theses and Dissertations
In eubacteria, stalled ribosomes are rescued by a conserved quality-control mechanism involving transfer-messenger RNA (tmRNA) and its protein partner SmpB. Mimicking a tRNA, tmRNA enters stalled ribosomes, adds Ala to the nascent polypeptide, and serves as a template to encode a short peptide that tags the nascent protein for destruction. To further characterize the tagging process, we developed two genetic selections that link tmRNA activity to cell death. These negative selections can be used to identify inhibitors of tagging or to identify mutations in key residues essential for ribosome rescue. Little is known about which ribosomal elements are specifically required …
Distribution And Dynamics Of Waterbird Habitat During Spring In Southern Oregon–Northeastern California, Joseph P. Fleskes, Christopher J. Gregory
Distribution And Dynamics Of Waterbird Habitat During Spring In Southern Oregon–Northeastern California, Joseph P. Fleskes, Christopher J. Gregory
Western North American Naturalist
The southern Oregon–northeastern California and extreme northwestern Nevada (hereafter "SONEC") region provides critical spring migration habitat for waterfowl and other waterbirds in the Pacific Flyway. Information on the dynamics and distribution of waterbird habitats in SONEC during spring is needed to guide conservation efforts in the region. We grouped 1992 National Land Cover Data classes into 5 potential waterbird habitat types and used Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus satellite imagery to map flooding of these habitat types in SONEC during February–May, 2002 and 2003. SONEC included 13,727 km2 of potential waterbird habitat comprised …

Phylogenetic Divergence In A Desert Fish: Differentiation Of Speckled Dace Within The Bonneville, Lahontan, And Upper Snake River Basins, Eric J. Billman, Jared B. Lee, D. Owen Young, Matthew D. Mckell, R. Paul Evans, Dennis K. Shiozawa
Western North American Naturalist
Historical events have had a great impact on the biogeography of fishes of western North America. We examined the genetic variation of the speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus) to determine the effects on this species of extensive hydrological changes during the last 10 million years in the Bonneville and Lahontan basins of the Great Basin and the upper Snake River Basin. Eight hundred sixty-nine base pairs of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b were sequenced from 97 individuals representing 22 populations within these 3 basins, as well as from 2 individuals of longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae) that served …
Denning Chronology Of Black Bears In Eastern Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, Roger A. Baldwin, Louis C. Bender
Denning Chronology Of Black Bears In Eastern Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, Roger A. Baldwin, Louis C. Bender
Western North American Naturalist
Understanding factors influencing the timing of den entrance and emergence of black bears (Ursus americanus) provides insight for bear management. We determined den entrance and emergence dates for bears in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) and related these dates to vegetative productivity, weather, habitat, and demographic factors to assess the influence of these factors on denning chronology. Date of den entrance was most strongly influenced by age class, precipitation, and proportion of human-use areas in annual home ranges. Den entrance was typically later for adult bears during wetter years and when annual home ranges contained a greater proportion …
Seed Dispersal, Seed Entrapment, And Seedling Recruitment In A Temporally Variable Desert Playa, Amanda N. Breen, James H. Richards
Seed Dispersal, Seed Entrapment, And Seedling Recruitment In A Temporally Variable Desert Playa, Amanda N. Breen, James H. Richards
Western North American Naturalist
Natural establishment of seedlings in desert playas with temporally variable precipitation hinges on many factors, including seed production, seed dispersal, seed entrapment, seed germination, and seedling survival. We investigated natural seed dispersal patterns and the effects of surface texture, wind barriers, resource availability (water and nutrients), and protection from herbivory on seedling establishment in a desert playa. We hypothesized that the seed rain would be consistent throughout the year and that seedling establishment would improve in resource-amended plots with barriers to wind dispersal. Contrary to our hypotheses, seed flux peaked seasonally during the winter, and fertilization had no consistent effect …

Western North American Naturalist
The Least Bell's Vireo (Vireo bellii pusillus) was listed as state endangered in 1980 and federally endangered in 1986 in response to a sharp population decline and range reduction. This vireo commonly bred in riparian forests throughout the Central Valley of California, but prior to 2005, no nesting pairs had been confirmed in the region in over 50 years. On 29 June 2005, a Least Bell's Vireo nest was located in a 3-year-old riparian restoration site at the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge in Stanislaus County, California. In 2006, a Least Bell's Vireo pair returned to the …
Effects Of Melezitose And Stachyose On Adult Longevity And Virus Persistence In Culicoides Sonorensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), Will K. Reeves, Guinevere Z. Jones
Effects Of Melezitose And Stachyose On Adult Longevity And Virus Persistence In Culicoides Sonorensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), Will K. Reeves, Guinevere Z. Jones
Western North American Naturalist
A wide variety of blood-feeding Diptera feed on extrafloral sugar sources such as homopteran honeydew. The significance of these sugar sources to insect survival and disease transmission is poorly known. Culicoides sonorensis, a biting midge, can survive on plant sugars but might also feed on homopteran honeydew. The survival of C. sonorensis fed 10% melezitose or 10% stachyose was compared to that of C. sonorensis fed 10% sucrose. A significantly greater number of C. sonorensis survived longer when fed melezitose than when fed either stachyose or sucrose. The effect of sugar meals on vector competence was measured using bluetongue and …
Biotic And Abiotic Factors Related To Redband Trout Occurrence And Abundance In Desert And Montane Streams, Kevin A. Meyer, James A. Lamansky Jr., Daniel J. Schill
Biotic And Abiotic Factors Related To Redband Trout Occurrence And Abundance In Desert And Montane Streams, Kevin A. Meyer, James A. Lamansky Jr., Daniel J. Schill
Western North American Naturalist
Redband trout Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri in the Columbia River Basin of western North America occupy desert and montane streams with variable habitat conditions. In general, desert streams are lower in gradient and elevation, contain less large substrate and more silt substrate, are less shaded by overhead vegetation, and have higher summer water temperature than montane streams. Consequently, we assessed whether the relationships between biotic and abiotic factors and the occurrence and abundance of redband trout in southwestern Idaho differed between desert and montane streams (<25 m mean width). Increased occurrence of redband trout in desert streams was most strongly related to increased stream shading and decreased amounts of silt substrate, followed by increased amounts of cobble/boulder substrate and absence of piscivorous fish (i.e., smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieui and northern pikeminnow Ptychocheilus oregonensis). In montane streams, increased occurrence of redband …25>

Hispid Pocket Mouse (Chaetodipus Hispidus) In East-Central And Northeastern Nebraska, Keith Geluso, Greg D. Wright
Western North American Naturalist
The hispid pocket mouse (Chaetodipus hispidus) occurs throughout the Great Plains, mainly west of the Missouri River. In Nebraska, this species likely occurs throughout the state, but records of occurrence were lacking for east-central and northeastern counties. During a survey in 2008 for the plains pocket mouse (Perognathus flavescens) in eastern Nebraska, we documented C. hispidus in 10 new counties, including a modest range expansion into northeastern Nebraska. Many individuals were captured on moderately compact soils consisting of silt, but some also were captured on sandy and other friable soils. Most individuals were captured in areas …
Seasonal Patterns Of Arthropod Diversity And Abundance On Big Sagebrush, Artemisia Tridentata, Monte P. Sanford, Nancy J. Huntly
Seasonal Patterns Of Arthropod Diversity And Abundance On Big Sagebrush, Artemisia Tridentata, Monte P. Sanford, Nancy J. Huntly
Western North American Naturalist
The sagebrush biotype is the largest in the western United States. This vast sagebrush community is thought to harbor equally vast and diverse arthropod communities, but these remain little explored. Our objective was to examine the diversity, abundance, and seasonal phenology of arthropod taxa found on the dominant shrub of the sagebrush ecosystem, big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata). We wanted to improve understanding of this little-studied arthropod assemblage that may play significant roles in the dynamics of sagebrush populations and the sagebrush ecosystem. We sampled free-living and gall-forming arthropods from a stratified random sample of sagebrush plants at the …

Plovers Breeding In The Highlands Of Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, And San Luis Potosí, Central México, Jaime Luévano, Eric Mellink, Mónica Riojas-López
Western North American Naturalist
From April to July 2008, we surveyed for breeding plovers at 32 sites in the semiarid highlands of Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosí, in the Central Mexican High Plateau. We documented evidence or presumption of breeding Snowy Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus) at 3 sites, Killdeer (C. vociferus) at 15 sites, and Mountain Plovers (C. montanus) at 1 site. Our surveys showed that the region is important breeding ground for only the Killdeer. We documented an apparent breeding range extension of the Mountain Plover to slightly more than 200 km south of its previously …

Theses and Dissertations
This project resulted in the creation of a prototype for a new book series entitled Instructional Readers that will be linguistically engineered to assist English-language learners in acquiring academic and content-based vocabulary in the sciences. The development of the prototype represented a process of trial and error, with decisions firmly grounded in extensive research concerning linguistic features that assist vocabulary growth while reading. The end result, the prototype entitled Cellular Transport, reflects the author's best attempt to combine these features. The project write-up details the steps used in writing the prototype to aid in the creation of similar instructional …

FHSS Mentored Research Conference
Clearly, there are circumstances requiring out-of family placement for children. Foster care in the U. S. and orphanages in numerous countries remain available or the only alternative for care of some children at-risk. The mental status of children while in alternative care has received little research attention while much research has focused on the post-care, long-term negative consequences of such care, including developmental delays or impairment (Norman & Park, 2009; Pearce & Pearce, 2001). Research suggests a significant negative psychological impact for children raised in orphanages. While foster care has been viewed as an improvement in the care of vulnerable …
