Use Of Integrated Models To Minimize The Impact Of Urban Wastewater Systems On A Mediterranean Stream, P. Prat, Corominas Ll, Lorenzo Benedetti, Joaquim Comas
Use Of Integrated Models To Minimize The Impact Of Urban Wastewater Systems On A Mediterranean Stream, P. Prat, Corominas Ll, Lorenzo Benedetti, Joaquim Comas
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In some regions, like in the Mediterranean area, streams are characterized by harsh hydrological fluctuations, with very low flow rates in summer and high in autumn. During low river flow conditions, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharges contribute significantly to the total river flow and hence their impact is higher. The objective of this paper is to find solutions to confront this typical problematic situation by means of integrated modelling. The benefits of modelling the whole urban wastewater system (UWS) to evaluate multiple operational strategies are shown. The model includes two sewer systems, two WWTPs, a connection channel between the two …

Eco Evidence Database: A Distributed Modelling Resource For Systematic Literature Analysis In Environmental Science And Management, J. Angus Webb, Siobhan C. De Little, Kimberly A. Miller, Michael J. Stewardson
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Balancing the needs of the environment with human uses of natural ecosystems relies on understanding causal relationships between environmental stressors and ecological responses. Causal relationships are difficult to demonstrate in natural environments due to environmental heterogeneity, lack of replication, and confounding influences. Published scientific literature is a currently under-used source of evidence for such analyses. We describe the Eco Evidence Database – a web database application for storing and sharing the atomized findings of research studies from the literature. This ‘evidence’ can then be used in synthesis studies to test cause-effect hypotheses. The database provides a permanent, machine-independent repository for …

Modelling Multi-Pollutant Fate In A Large River: Role Of Hydro-Morphological And Physicochemical Parameters, Cyril Garneau, Sabine Sauvage, José-Miguel Sanchez-Perez, Yi Hong, Dominique Aubert, Anne Probst
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
European rivers are facing multiple sources of pollution, including metals, pesticides and nutrients. To understand the factors controlling their transport, modelling can be used to predict their fate. Usually, however, only one class of components is considered, often neglecting inner interactions. This paper proposes a methodological approach towards understanding the main processes describing the fate of trace pollutants interacting with hydrological processes and suspended solids. The model is evaluated in the middle course of the Garonne River in France and developed in three stages, each integrating a new type of process. The first describes the hydromorphology of the sector studied …
New Developments In The Anuclim Bioclimatic Modelling Package, Tingbao Xu, Michael F. Hutchinson
New Developments In The Anuclim Bioclimatic Modelling Package, Tingbao Xu, Michael F. Hutchinson
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
ANUCLIM (Xu and Hutchinson, 2011) is a software package used to support the spatial modelling of environmental and natural resources. It enables users to readily obtain estimates, in point and grid form, of monthly, seasonal and annual mean climate variables from supplied elevation dependent monthly mean climate surfaces and an underlying digital elevation model. The climate surfaces are derived by the ANUSPLIN package (Hutchinson, 2004) and support interrogation at sub-kilometre scale. A key strength of the ANUCLIM package is its ability to generate bioclimatic profiles from known species locations to predict and map species distributions, in both current and projected …
Evaluating The Impacts Of Redd+ Interventions On Livelihoods, Social Equity And Effectiveness, Robin Matthews, Innocent Bakam, George Dyer
Evaluating The Impacts Of Redd+ Interventions On Livelihoods, Social Equity And Effectiveness, Robin Matthews, Innocent Bakam, George Dyer
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Globally, deforestation and forest and peatland degradation account for around 15% of total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) could be a cost-effective way of reducing this figure. Discussion on REDD+ has focused largely on the institutional architectures required to channel international finance streams to individual countries, neglecting how these funds will be used at the national level to encourage behavioural change. For REDD+ to work, benefits must flow through a long chain of actors, from national, regional and local governments, industries and businesses, to farmer groups and indigenous communities. The factors influencing decision-making at …

Global Sensitivity Analysis For The Flow Components Of A Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Model, Carolina Massmann, Hubert Holzmann
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper deals with a conceptual rainfall-runoff model in which thetotal flow is obtained as the sum of the flow of individual flow components, such assurface flow, interflow and groundwater flow. In contrast to classical sensitivityanalyses, where the sensitivity of the total flow to each parameter is analysed, weshow here the results of variance and sensitivity analyses carried out for each flowcomponent. It was observed that the variance for the total flow spans a range offour orders of magnitude. A comparison with the variances of each flow componentallows identifying the process with the highest variance at each time step, whichcan …
An Index For Evaluating Biodiversity Protection Parity, G. A. Alexandrov
An Index For Evaluating Biodiversity Protection Parity, G. A. Alexandrov
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Since destruction of natural ecosystems can endanger many species simultaneously, the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011- 2020 set a target for the share of protected areas. They should cover 17% of land area. There are, however, some concerns about the use of uniform regional targets as the basis for biodiversity protection strategies. This paper is to propose an index that could express socio-ecological disparities between regions and serve as a basis for setting up equitable differentiated regional targets.

Floods and droughts are expected to occur more frequently due to climate change. Regional water boards in the Netherlands are anticipating water level variations in streams in rural areas. To moderate adverse effects of those variations, they seek for opportunities to enhance retention of rainfall runoff on agricultural land in the stream valleys. This can be done by contracting farmers to apply agri-environmental measures. We focus on this small-scale and flexible (in space and time) rainfall runoff retention by farmers. Farmers can decide to (temporarily) allocate parts of their land to apply agri-environmental measures, depending on shocks of various nature, …

Ecological Flow Analysis Of Network Collapse Ii: Indicators Of Ecosystem Level Vulnerability, Elena Rovenskaya, Victoria Veschinskaya, Brian D. Fath, Ulf Dieckmann, Ake Brannström
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Using donor-controlled, bottom-up equations to describe network collapse we systematically investigate the impact each species has on the survival or extinction of other species. Short of extinction, one can determine the integrated losses experienced by the ecosystem. These losses are aggregated into system level indicators, such as entropy, average gain/loss, average time to extinction, etc. The methodology is applied to 18 ecological flow networks available in the literature. We calculate the correlations between various indicators and determine high positive correlation between: number of nodes & maximal trophic level; connectedness & average entropy losses; number of nodes & average number of …
Integrating Openmi And Uncertweb: Managing Uncertainty In Openmi Models, Tushar Gupta, Richard Jones, Lucy Bastin, Dan Cornford
Integrating Openmi And Uncertweb: Managing Uncertainty In Openmi Models, Tushar Gupta, Richard Jones, Lucy Bastin, Dan Cornford
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
OpenMI is a widely used standard allowing exchange of data between integrated models, which has mostly been applied to dynamic, deterministic models. Within the FP7 UncertWeb project we are developing mechanisms and tools to support the management of uncertainty in environmental models. In this paper we explore the integration of the UncertWeb framework with OpenMI, to assess the issues that arise when propagating uncertainty in OpenMI model compositions, and the degree of integration possible with UncertWeb tools. In particular we develop an uncertainty-enabled model for a simple Lotka-Volterra system with an interface conforming to the OpenMI standard, exploring uncertainty in …

A Tool For Optimum Design Of Wwtps Under Uncertainty: Estimating The Probability Of Compliance, Cristina Martin, Marc B. Neumann, Josep Altimir, Peter A. Vanrolleghem
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents a prototype tool for design of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs). It is a model-based approach that explicitly accounts for both temporal variability and uncertainty. It evaluates a set of WWTP designs for a predefined configuration and estimates the probability of compliance (POC) given some sources of uncertainty. The proposed tool uses two nested loops: the outer loop tests different scenarios looking for the optimal combination of the design variables; the inner loop uses a Monte Carlo simulation propagating the uncertain model inputs to obtain the POC. The Benchmark Simulation Model no.1 was used as basic plant configuration. …

This information is available on a website as tabular data and trend charts. A detailed analysis is necessary in order to interpret this information and provide decision-making criteria for the management of the natural area. The purpose of this paper is to improve public access to the information collected in the monitoring program …
Application Of Cfd Methods To The Upgrading Of A Contact Tank, C. Gualtieri
Application Of Cfd Methods To The Upgrading Of A Contact Tank, C. Gualtieri
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The paper presents the results of a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study undertaken to upgrading the hydraulic efficiency of the contact tank of the wastewater treatment plant of Nola-Marigliano, near Napoli. First numerical simulations were performed to compare the hydraulic performances of two existing operating schemes (A and B). The results pointed out the presence of recirculation areas near the baffles and the corners of the tank. Second some different changes were proposed for scheme A, which has shown the best performances, to reduce dead-zones inside the tank. Hence, further numerical simulations pointed out that the introduction of a grid …

Monitoring The Performance Of Soft Sensors Used In Wwtps By Means Of Formal Verification, L. Luccarini, D. Pulcini, D. Sottara, S. Bragaglia, P. Mello
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In Waste-Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) automation, “soft” sensors might beused in conjunction with “hard” sensors to improve the reliability of the measurements, oreven to replace the latter when they would be too expensive or difficult to maintain. Unfortunately, many soft sensors are created using black-box data mining techniques suchas neural networks or Bayesian networks. These algorithms approximate the relationbetween simpler, more easily available data and the desired “sensed” quantity. However, they are usually dependent on the training data and cannot always generalise correctlywhen processing completely different inputs. Like their hardware counterparts, then, softsensors may have input validity ranges. Moreover, they may be …
Dealing With Uncertainty In Ecosystem Model Scenarios: Application Of Singlemodel Ensemble Approach, Gideon Gal, Vardit Makler-Pick, Noam Shachar
Dealing With Uncertainty In Ecosystem Model Scenarios: Application Of Singlemodel Ensemble Approach, Gideon Gal, Vardit Makler-Pick, Noam Shachar
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Complex ecosystem models are often used as a means for gaining insight into ecosystem processes and as a management tool for resource managers. The uncertainty associated with these models present, however, a major stumbling block in their acceptance as a main stream management tool. Even if used, there is often a lack of confidence in the results and predictions due to the uncertainty. In addition, the difficulty in estimating model uncertainty and resulting error associated with simulation outcomes further limits model use. The lake ecosystem model DYRESM-CAEDYM (DYCD) includes hundreds of parameters and processes and inherently incorporates a large degree …
Dynamics Of Genetic Structure Of Population With Age Structure During Optimal Harvest With Constant Quota, Oksana Zhdanova, Efim Frisman
Dynamics Of Genetic Structure Of Population With Age Structure During Optimal Harvest With Constant Quota, Oksana Zhdanova, Efim Frisman
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Ecological and genetic consequences of optimal equilibrium harvest with constant quota in uniform and two-aged populations have been considered in this work. It has been shown analytically that maximum of equilibrium harvest income is unreachable when both age groups are harvested simultaneously. The optimal strategy of harvest is the catch of fixed portion from single age group. In addition, optimal harvest may result not only in a change in the dynamic mode of the system, but also in a considerable change in the genetic composition of the population.

The policy framework was relatedto the implementation of the Italian special law for the safeguarding of Venice anda series of European regulations, including the Nitrate and the Water Frameworkdirectives and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The main focus was ondiffuse pollution from agricultural sources - nitrogen and phosphorous in particular -with the aim of assessing the impacts of current and alternative cultivation andlivestock practices. Many different modelling approaches were adopted, rangingfrom cognitive mapping for expert knowledge elicitation, to deterministicmechanistic …
Suitability Of Land Cover And Remote Sensing Data For Modelling Species Distributions, Anna F. Cord, Doris Klein, Franz Mora, Stefan Dech
Suitability Of Land Cover And Remote Sensing Data For Modelling Species Distributions, Anna F. Cord, Doris Klein, Franz Mora, Stefan Dech
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Current changes of biodiversity result almost exclusively from human activities. As a consequence, spatially continuous estimates of species distributions are needed to support biodiversity evaluation and management. In the last two decades, species distribution models (SDMs) have been established as important tools for extrapolating in situ (point) observations. To account for current habitat loss, climate data used as predictors in SDMs need to be complemented by measures of current land surface characteristics. For this purpose, two alternative data sources are available, namely categorical land cover and continuous remote sensing data, each with their advantages and drawbacks. The objective of this …

Influence Of Uncertainty Analysis Methods And Subjective Choices On Prediction Uncertainty For A Respirometric Case, Katrijn Cierkens, Stijn Van Hoey, Bernard De Baets, Piet Seuntjens, Ingmar Nopens
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Uncertainty analysis in integrated wastewater treatment modelling is still in its infancy, although techniques from different fields are increasingly used in research for design and control of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, results should be interpreted with care. This paper shows explicitly the influence of different methodologies and subjective choices on prediction uncertainty for a simple environmental modelling case: a respirometric experiment for acetate degradation without storage. This case uses experimental data and can be used to estimate kinetic parameters of activated sludge in full-scale wastewater treatment modelling. These are subsequently used in more complex activated sludge models (ASMs) for …

Geoinformation Technologies In The Identification Of Meandering Section Of The River, Beata Wieczorek, Katarzyna Glińska-Lewczuk, Anna Sobieraj
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The aim of this study was to present the capabilities of using geoinformation technologies in the process of outlining meandering section of the river.Development of valley plain rivers landscape is connected with occurrence of old river beds, which came into existence because of natural changing of river-bed (meandering) or man interference in water system (Glińska-Lewczuk et al. 2010). Survey results from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) combined with hydrologic data can be successfully used to determine area, borders and duration of overflow of the old river beds. It is a complex problem which requires operations with large data sets. These actions …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In the city of Berlin combined sewer overflows (CSO) can lead to severedepressions in dissolved oxygen (DO) of receiving urban rivers and hence to acutestress for the local fish fauna. To quantify CSO impacts and optimize sewermanagement strategies, a model-based planning instrument has been developed. It couples the urban drainage model InfoWorks CS which simulates hydraulics andpollutant transport in the sewer with the river water quality model QSim whichsimulates hydraulics, mass transport and various biogeochemical processes in thereceiving water body. To identify simulated CSO impacts, concentration-durationfrequency-thresholds for DO are applied to river model results via an impactassessment tool. Two kinds of …

Climate change and dramatic loss of biodiversity are essential subjects for EU research. However, little of current knowledge is reaching the young generation. In order to implement biodiversity research into the reality of school education we brought members of the scientific and educational communities together. Educational software has been developed which combines desk (or rather lap-)top work with field experiences by combining virtual excursions with real ones. The software PRONAS shows how scientists handle questions about the impact of climate change on species’ habitats. It makes core results of research projects available for students from 12 to 19 and is freely …
Sensitivity Analysis Of Environmental Flow Rule Curves For Water Allocation Optimization: Case Study, The Upper Oldman River Basin, Alberta, Canada, M. Reza Ghanbarpour, Howard Wheater, Patricia Gober
Sensitivity Analysis Of Environmental Flow Rule Curves For Water Allocation Optimization: Case Study, The Upper Oldman River Basin, Alberta, Canada, M. Reza Ghanbarpour, Howard Wheater, Patricia Gober
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Water allocation models use a set of decision rule curves to define constraints and priorities for optimal allocation of limited water supply to all water demands and requirements at the river basin scale. These rules are necessary to achieve optimal tradeoff between different river basin management goals (e.g. environment protection, urban development, agricultural expansion). However, many operating rules need to be modified as water demands and river basin priorities change over time due to socio-political forces and climate change. In particular, environmental flow criteria are of major interest; they can raise challenges for resource allocation, and represent an important interface …

Development Of A Guideline For Regional And Local Authorities To Adapt To Climate Change - Results Of The Project “Klimpass”, Hardy Pundt, Andrea Heilmann, Enrico Kerwel
Development Of A Guideline For Regional And Local Authorities To Adapt To Climate Change - Results Of The Project “Klimpass”, Hardy Pundt, Andrea Heilmann, Enrico Kerwel
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The project KLIMPASS was aimed at the development of an adaptation strategy to climate change based on a regional, and local level. The basis of such a strategy is formed by the existing climate change scenarios. The overall goal is to move from a high level of abstraction to context specific conditions, involving local stakeholders and concrete actors. GIS technology was used to process vulnerability maps that support decision-making processes about measures to be implemented envisaging potential climatic threats. This paper describes the overall methodology applied, and focuses later on the GIS-based vulnerability maps.

Comparison Of Two Common Empirical Methods To Model Land-Use Choices In A Multi-Agent System Simulation Of Landscape Transition: Implication For A Hybrid Approach, Quang Bao Le, Flávia F. Feitosa
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Land-use choice routines embedded in a human-environment system (HES) model must meet more requirements than those in models typically presented in purely economic or psychological studies. This study compares the strengths and shortcomings of two common empirical methods - multi-nominal logistic (MNL) regression and classification tree (CT) analysis – for specifying landuse choices in a multi-agent system simulation framework (Land Use Dynamics Simulator - LUDAS). First, we described design concepts of land-use decisionmaking mechanism in the LUDAS framework in which household’s land-use choice is a component. Next, we compared two common methods for modeling the landuse choice with respect to …
