Pathways To Marriage: Relationship History And Emotional Health As Individual Predictors Of Romantic Relationship Formation, Garret Tyler Roundy
Pathways To Marriage: Relationship History And Emotional Health As Individual Predictors Of Romantic Relationship Formation, Garret Tyler Roundy
Theses and Dissertations
The process of forming a committed, romantic relationship is described as a developmental phenomenon that cannot be accurately viewed without the context of prior relationship experiences because the social competencies that facilitate successful navigation of the tasks of relationship formation are developed in relationships. Furthermore, a cumulative relationship history that has a negative influence may lead to poor emotional health, further disrupting relationship formation processes through that mechanism. Hypotheses were tested using data from a prospective longitudinal study of participants (218 women, 174 men) who were not in a romantic relationship at initial data collection and reported on their relationship …
Cognitive Functioning In Multiple Sclerosis: An Investigation Of The Utility Of A Computerized Cognitive Testing System, Stephanie Patrice Mclaughlin
Cognitive Functioning In Multiple Sclerosis: An Investigation Of The Utility Of A Computerized Cognitive Testing System, Stephanie Patrice Mclaughlin
Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this study was to assess cognitive functioning in participants with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) using the MicroCog and to compare their performance to that of a demographically matched, healthy control group. It was hypothesized that as a group, participants with RRMS would have worse cognitive function than healthy controls on all Level 1, 2, and 3 Index scores of the MicroCog. Twenty-six participants with RRMS and twenty-nine sex and education matched healthy controls were administered the MicroCog (Standard Form) along with measures of depression and clinical status, and paper-pencil tests of processing speed (Symbol Digit …

Marginalized Sexuality And Masculinity: An Ethnographic Exploration Of Adolescent Homophobic Language In A Rural High School, Benjamin M. Bailey
Marginalized Sexuality And Masculinity: An Ethnographic Exploration Of Adolescent Homophobic Language In A Rural High School, Benjamin M. Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have examined homophobic language (HL) with both qualitative and quantitative methods and have studied HL's relationship to multiple factors such as sexual prejudice, masculinity, and religiosity. However, our understanding of this language, while expanding, is still limited because the meaning of this evolving language varies depending on the context in which the language is used. In order to get a more in-depth and current understanding of this language, I conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 males who were high school seniors. I also conducted 102 hours of observations in their high school. I analyzed the interviews and observations with a …
Gas Phase Structure Characterization Using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Anupriya Anupriya
Gas Phase Structure Characterization Using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Anupriya Anupriya
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) based techniques to study the impact of molecular structure on conformation and binding energetics. A novel method to determine collison cross sectional areas using FTICR (CRAFTI), initially developed by the Dearden lab, was applied to study the conformations of molecular systems with unique structural attributes in an attempt to explore the molecular range of CRAFTI. The systems chosen for CRAFTI studies include crown-ether alkylammonium complexes and biogenic amino acids. The results were found to be consistent with expected behavior, and strongly correlated with experimental measurements made using ion mobility …
Moral Values In Moral Psychology? A Textual Analysis, Shannon Starks
Moral Values In Moral Psychology? A Textual Analysis, Shannon Starks
Theses and Dissertations
What values, if any, is moral psychology based on with regard to what humans should be like? While the value-free ideal of science requires at least the bracketing of values in regards to the conducting of research and influence on its results, this investigation takes seriously the concerns of leading social psychologists that biases may influence the subdiscipline. Textual analyses of moral psychology's literature involving content analysis of codes and cultural discourse analysis of value themes illuminate values involving moral problems and moral goods that may inherently influence research at various levels. It is proposed that values are impossible to …
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Bmpr1b, Paulo Andre Machicao Tello
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Bmpr1b, Paulo Andre Machicao Tello
Theses and Dissertations
Methods for preparing an array of potential small molecule inhibitors of Bone Morphogenetic Protein Receptor 1b (BMPR1b) are described. Target molecules were prepared from two general classes: (1) N9-aryl-N6-ureidoadenines, and (2) dicarbamyl iodoacetamides. Recent data from the Peterson lab indicated that both classes might bind to BMPR1b and thus inhibit this key receptor. Docking studies performed using Sureflex Dock suggested the N9-aryl-N6-ureidoadenines would bind to the active site of BMPR1b. In addition antiproliferative activities of dicarbamyl iodoacetamides previously synthesized in the Peterson lab pointed to this moiety as an attractive target for structure activity relationship (SAR) development. Compounds were prepared …
Embracing Multiplicity: Autobiographical Personae In Ruth Hall, Gina Marie Schneck
Embracing Multiplicity: Autobiographical Personae In Ruth Hall, Gina Marie Schneck
Theses and Dissertations
Sara Payson Willis Eldredge Farrington Parton, more famously known as the elusive Fanny Fern, employs three autobiographical personae mediated by fiction in her debut novel, Ruth Hall: (1) Ruth Hall, the novel's protagonist; (2) Floy, the fictional Ruth's pseudonym; and (3) Fanny Fern, Parton's real-life pseudonym and the name under which Ruth Hall was published. Together these personae assert a fragmented presence that incorporates various voices and lives, allowing for exploration, growth, and interactivity.Philippe Lejeune's autobiographical contract outlines three specific guidelines for autobiography—that it be a narrative, that it explore personal history, and that it link author and protagonist. Ruth …
Anal Fin Pigmentation In Brachyrhaphis Fishes Is Not Used For Sexual Mimicry, Kandace Mary Hugentobler
Anal Fin Pigmentation In Brachyrhaphis Fishes Is Not Used For Sexual Mimicry, Kandace Mary Hugentobler
Theses and Dissertations
Pigmentation patterns can be used as a communication signal in a variety of taxa, and can convey information relative to sexual selection, dominance, and species identification. Pigmentation is also sometimes used in mimicry to deceive the signal receiver into thinking the signaler is something other than itself. Mimicry can occur in several contexts, including sexual interactions, where one sex mimics another. There are relatively few examples of species with females that mimic males. Proposed hypotheses to explain female mimicry of males are that mimicry is used to reduce male harassment or that mimicry is used to display dominance over other …

A High School Biology Teacher's Development Through A New Teaching Assignment Coupled With Teacher-Led Professional Development, Lorien Young Francis
Theses and Dissertations
This self-study examined the learning that emerged from a change in teaching assignment coupled with self-initiated, teacher-led professional development in order to understand a high school science teacher's development as a teacher. The two participants in the study were the teacher/researcher, an experienced high school biology teacher who was taking up a new assignment teaching biotechnology, an advanced science course; and a first-year teacher assigned to teach biotechnology, who served as collaborator in the professional development and critical friend in the study. In order to uncover the teacher/researcher's learning and thinking, self-study of teaching practice methodology most clearly met the …
The Activity Of Alkaline Glutaraldehyde Against Bacterial Endospores And Select Non-Enveloped Viruses, Justen Thalmus Despain
The Activity Of Alkaline Glutaraldehyde Against Bacterial Endospores And Select Non-Enveloped Viruses, Justen Thalmus Despain
Theses and Dissertations
Alkaline glutaraldehyde (GTA) has been used as a high level chemical disinfectant and sterilant for many years and is known to kill a broad spectrum of organisms ranging from vegetative eukaryotes to bacterial endospores. Although the mechanism of sporicidal action has been studied on numerous occasions, GTA's exact mechanism(s) of action are still debated. In addition to the uncertainty of GTA's mechanism(s) of action, GTA has also shown significant variability in the time required to kill endospores and naked viruses. A better knowledge of the lethal mechanism(s) of GTA is needed to understand this discrepancy in kill times for GTA …
Ab Blood Type And Its Genetic Relationship To Alzheimer’S Disease, Mark Wadsworth, John S. K. Kauwe
Ab Blood Type And Its Genetic Relationship To Alzheimer’S Disease, Mark Wadsworth, John S. K. Kauwe
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a debilitating disease that has increased the hardship of many lives. Many people above the age of 65 have been diagnosed with this genetically complex disease, which financially and emotionally burdens those diagnosed and their families. Earlier this year a study was released that found, using a dataset of individuals that have had strokes, that individuals with AB blood type are more at risk of developing cognitive impairment[1]. This study however was not looking at the genetics of AD. My objective in performing this study was to see if there is a genetic association between Alzheimer’s …
The Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera: Ensifera): Phylogeny, Origins, And Leaf-Like Crypsis, Joseph D. Mugleston
The Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera: Ensifera): Phylogeny, Origins, And Leaf-Like Crypsis, Joseph D. Mugleston
Theses and Dissertations
Tettigoniidae (katydids) has more than 7200 species and is the largest family within the insect order Orthoptera. Their unique biology including leaf-like crypsis, acoustic signaling, and courtship rituals garners much of their academic attention. However, the taxonomy of katydids is chaotic and previous to these studies, little work had been done to decipher the phylogenetic relationships within this family. Without a robust phylogenetic framework, questions regarding the evolution of katydid disguises including the leaf-like crypsis cannot be addressed. This dissertation contains three chapters. Chapter 1 provides the first phylogenetic hypothesis focusing on Tettigoniidae. In this chapter we show a character …
Carl Jung's Historic Place In Psychology And Continuing Influence In Narrative Studies And American Popular Culture, Emily S. Darowski, Joseph J. Darowski
Carl Jung's Historic Place In Psychology And Continuing Influence In Narrative Studies And American Popular Culture, Emily S. Darowski, Joseph J. Darowski
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Cart Gustav Jung was a Swiss-born psychiatrist who lived from the late nineteenth century well into the twentieth century. He founded the analytical psychology movement and is known for ideas such as the collective unconscious, archetypes, and one of the first conceptions of introversion and extraversion. The following paper explores Jung's influence on the field of psychology and other disciplines, postulating that his more lasting, but subtle influence exists outside his chosen field. This topic for exploration developed out of conversations between the two authors, one with an educational background in cognitive psychology, the other in American Studies. We draw …
Criteria For Selecting Pegylation Sites On Proteins For Higher Thermodynamic Stability, Paul B. Lawrence
Criteria For Selecting Pegylation Sites On Proteins For Higher Thermodynamic Stability, Paul B. Lawrence
Theses and Dissertations
PEGylation of protein side-chains has been used for more than 30 years to enhance the pharmacokinetic properties of protein drugs, and has been enabled by the recent development of many chemoselective reactions for protein side-chain modification. However, there are no structure- or sequence-based guidelines for selecting sites that provide optimal PEG-based pharmacokinetic enhancement with minimal loss to biological activity. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to protein PEGylation. In chapter 2 we use the WW domain of the human protein Pin 1 (WW) as a model system to probe the impact of PEG on protein conformational stability. Using a combination …
The Pmrhfijklm Operon In Yersinia Pseudotuberculosis Enhances Resistance To Ccl28 And Promotes Phagocytic Engulfment By Neutrophils, Lauren Elizabeth Johnson
The Pmrhfijklm Operon In Yersinia Pseudotuberculosis Enhances Resistance To Ccl28 And Promotes Phagocytic Engulfment By Neutrophils, Lauren Elizabeth Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is a foodborne pathogen that is the ancestral strain to Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of Plague. Y. pseudotuberculosis invades a host through the intestinal epithelium. The bacteria resist mucosal innate immune defenses including antimicrobial chemokines and phagocytic cells, and replicate in local lymph nodes. They cause Tuberculosis-like symptoms, including necrosis of local tissue and granuloma formation. Like all bacteria, Y. pseudotuberculosis has a net negative charge, which contributes to its susceptibility to some cationic antimicrobial peptides. Y. pseudotuberculosis is able to reduce this negative charge by adding 4-amino-4-deoxy-L-arabinose (L-Ara4N) to the lipid A portion of lipopolysaccharide. The …
An Investigation Of Associations Between Heart Rate Measures Of Aerobic Fitness And Executive Functioning In Pre-Adolescent Children, Kimberly Anne Barnett
An Investigation Of Associations Between Heart Rate Measures Of Aerobic Fitness And Executive Functioning In Pre-Adolescent Children, Kimberly Anne Barnett
Student Works
The present study evaluated the associations between direct measures of aerobic fitness and executive functioning in pre-adolescent children aged 8 to 12 years. To evaluate these associations, the study employed a cross-sectional design and a series of three step hierarchical regressions were conducted. Results suggest that after controlling for age, sex, and BMI percentile, heart rate measures of aerobic fitness did not independently predict executive function. These findings provide preliminary evidence that contradicts a growing body of research within the adult literature demonstrating an association between aerobic fitness and executive function.

An Investigation Of The Impact A Rov Competition Curriculum Has On Student Interest In Stem, Specifically Technology And Engineering, Daniel Gordon Bates
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates the impact a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) program has on student interest in, and perception of, technology and engineering (sTEm). ROV programs embed areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) into their curriculum; however, emphasis for this study is placed on interest and perception of the "T" and "E" of STEM. Although there are many articles detailing the benefits of ROV programs, there is little empirical data documenting the impact on student interest and perception of sTEm. This study outlines the background of a few major ROV programs in the U.S.; specifically Utah Underwater Robotics (UUR), …
Characterization Of Five Brevibacillus Bacteriophages And Their Genomes, Michael Allen Sheflo
Characterization Of Five Brevibacillus Bacteriophages And Their Genomes, Michael Allen Sheflo
Theses and Dissertations
Brevibacillus laterosporus (B. laterosporus) is a pathogen difficult to distinguish from Paenibacillus larvae (P. larvae), and contributes to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) of honeybees. To develop a biocontrol agent to limit its presence, bacteriophages were isolated from Utah County soil samples and used to infect B. laterosporus isolated from Utah County honey and larvae samples. Since CCD is prevalent in Utah beehives, bacteriophage that infect and lyse B. laterosporus may be isolated and characterized. Pathogens were isolated from soil samples, and 16S rRNA gene tests initially identified the strains as P. larvae. Bacteriophages were isolated, purified, and amplified sufficiently to …
Glutamate And Gaba Receptor-Mediated Plasticity In The Mesolimbic Dopamine System By Alcohol, Ashley Cerise Nelson
Glutamate And Gaba Receptor-Mediated Plasticity In The Mesolimbic Dopamine System By Alcohol, Ashley Cerise Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
Alcoholism is a devastating chronic relapsing disorder with significant costs to individuals and society. The mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system plays an important role in regulating reward and addiction. GABA neurons located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) regulate VTA DA neuron activity, and are a relevant target for alcohol in the brain. VTA GABA neurons exhibit marked hyperexcitability during withdrawal from ethanol. Past research has demonstrated that the motivational effects of opiates cause a change in VTA GABA(A) receptors in opiate-dependent animals, which switch from a GABA-induced hyperpolarization of GABA neurons to a GABA-induced depolarization. The focus of this study …

A Distributed Control Algorithm For Small Swarms In Cordon And Patrol, C Kristopher Alder
Student Works
Distributed teams of air and ground robots have the potential to be very useful in a variety of application domains, and much work is being done to design distributed algorithms that produce useful behaviors. This thesis presents a set of distributed algorithms that operate under minimal human input for patrol and cordon tasks. The algorithms allow the team to surround and travel between objects of interest. Empirical analyses indicate that the surrounding behaviors are robust to variations on the shape of the object of interest, communication loss, and robot failures.
Associations Between Physical And Sedentary Activity Regularity And Sleep In Preschoolers And Kindergartners, Kara Mcrae Duraccio
Associations Between Physical And Sedentary Activity Regularity And Sleep In Preschoolers And Kindergartners, Kara Mcrae Duraccio
Theses and Dissertations
Short sleep duration in childhood has been associated with an increased risk of overweight and obesity. Research suggests that physical activity might mediate this association; however, studies examining associations between physical activity and sleep in young children have reported equivocal findings. A possible explanation for these inconsistencies is that past studies have looked at total physical activity counts rather than examining physical activity regularity. We aim to explore the relationship of regular physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep in preschoolers and kindergartners. 131 children (ages 4-6) were included in this study. Each child wore a waist-worn accelerometer for three days …
Competition Dynamics Within Communities Of Desert Wildlife At Water Sources, Lucas Keith Hall
Competition Dynamics Within Communities Of Desert Wildlife At Water Sources, Lucas Keith Hall
Theses and Dissertations
Water is a vital resource for species inhabiting arid and semi-arid regions and can shape the biotic communities that we observe. Because water is considered a limiting resource for many species in desert environments, there is the potential for competitive interactions between species to occur at or around water sources. For this dissertation I tested hypotheses related to resource competition among different species of wildlife in the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts of western Utah. Chapter one evaluated the influence of feral horses (Equus caballus) on patterns of water use by communities of native birds and mammals. Chapter …

Molecular Studies Of South American Teiid Lizards (Teiidae: Squamata) From Deep Time To Shallow Divergences, Derek B. Tucker
Theses and Dissertations
I focus on phylogenetic relationships of teiid lizards beginning with generic and species relationship within the family, followed by a detailed biogeographical examination of the Caribbean genus Pholidoscelis, and end by studying species boundaries and phylogeographic patterns of the widespread Giant Ameiva Ameiva ameiva. Genomic data (488,656 bp of aligned nuclear DNA) recovered a well-supported phylogeny for Teiidae, showing monophyly for 18 genera including those recently described using morphology and smaller molecular datasets. All three methods of phylogenetic estimation (two species tree, one concatenation) recovered identical topologies except for some relationships within the subfamily Tupinambinae (i.e. position of …

Influence Of Release Timing On Survival And Movements Of Translocated Mule Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus) In Utah, David C. Smedley
Theses and Dissertations
Translocation of wildlife has become common practice for wildlife managers charged with management of animals on increasingly modified landscapes. Translocation can be used to reduce population density in the source area, supplement existing populations, reestablish extirpated populations, and establish new populations. Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) are a species of great interest to the public in western North America. Although translocations have been used to manage mule deer, very little has been done to document the outcomes of this management practice. The purpose of this research was to evaluate movement, site fidelity, space use, and survival of translocated mule …
