Aspects Of The Reproductive Ecology Of Female Turtles In New Mexico, Jeffrey E. Lovich, Mickey Agha, Charles W. Painter, Levi Cole, Austin Fitzgerald, Kevin Narum, Randy D. Jennings
Western North American Naturalist
Data on reproductive ecology of turtles in New Mexico are limited, and some species living there are among the least studied in the United States. We trapped 4 native species of turtles (Apalone spinifera, Chrysemys picta, Pseudemys gorzugi, and Trachemys gaigeae gaigeae) in the Rio Grande and Black River (Pecos River drainage) of New Mexico in June 2012 and 2013 to collect data on female reproductive ecology, including clutch size, egg size, timing of egg production, and percentage of gravid females. During our sampling, we found shelled eggs via X-radiography in only 3 native species: C. picta, P. …

Variations In Geochemistry And Mineralogy Of Aeolian Dust Deposition To Mountains In Utah And Nevada, Usa, Dylan Binder Dastrup
Theses and Dissertations
Major and trace metal loading to mountains in the western US depends on dust sources, intensity of storms and their availability for transport during snowmelt and runoff. Previous work has been conducted on dust production, composition, and its affect on solar radiation and timing of snow melt. This study was conducted to 1) examine temporal and spatial variability in dust chemistry; 2) evaluate form and availability of major and trace elements in dust; and 3) identify potential dust sources affecting mountains in Utah and Nevada. Spring and summertime dust was collected across northern Utah over the course of three years …

Integrative taxonomy (IT) is becoming a preferred approach to delimiting species boundaries by including different empirical criteria. IT methods can be divided into two types of procedures both of which use multiple kinds of evidence: step-by-step approaches test hypotheses by sequential evaluation in a hypothetic-deductive framework, while model-based procedures delimit groups based on statistical information criteria. In this study we used a step-by-step approach and a Gaussian clustering (GC) method to test species boundaries in the northernmost species of the Liolaemus montanus group. We used different methods based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data, morphological measures and niche envelope …

Conspecific Pollen On Insects Visiting Female Flowers On The Oak Parasite Phoradendron Coryae (Viscaceae), William Wiesenborn
Conspecific Pollen On Insects Visiting Female Flowers On The Oak Parasite Phoradendron Coryae (Viscaceae), William Wiesenborn
Western North American Naturalist
Phoradendron coryae (Viscaceae) is a dioecious, parasitic plant on oak trees and shrubs in Quercus (Fagaceae), and it occurs from Arizona to Texas and into northern Mexico. The species produces minute spherical flowers during summer. Dioecious flowering requires pollinating insects to carry pollen from male to female plants. I investigated the pollination of P. coryae parasitizing Quercus turbinella shrubs at 3 sites at different elevations in the Cerbat Mountains of northwestern Arizona during August–September 2015. I examined pollen from male flowers, aspirated insects landing on female flowers, and counted conspecific pollen grains carried by insects. The tricolpate pollen of P. …
Nutrient Recycling By Eared Grebes In The Great Salt Lake, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover
Nutrient Recycling By Eared Grebes In The Great Salt Lake, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover
Western North American Naturalist
Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling in lakes can be impacted by numerous abiotic and biotic factors. Large animals, such as birds and mammals, may recycle nutrients within a system or bring them in from surrounding habitats or different landscapes. Eared Grebes (Podiceps nigricollis) congregate in large numbers in the fall on the Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, and may have an important role in recycling nutrients from macroinvertebrates back into the water column. We evaluated the role of Eared Grebes in N and P cycling within the GSL by estimating the magnitude of their nutrient recycling capacity. …

Nomenclatural Adjustments In Phacelia Sect. Glandulosae (Hydrophyllaceae, Boraginales), Genevieve K. Walden, Laura M. Garrison, Robert Patterson
Western North American Naturalist
Three taxa are recognized at the rank of species based on molecular phylogenetic studies in Phacelia sect. Glandulosae (Hydrophyllaceae, Boraginales). Results of those studies did not support a monophyletic Phacelia crenulata Torr. ex S. Watson, because 3 varieties of that species were supported as distinct lineages based on molecular (nuclear and chloroplast) and morphological characters. Typification and status is clarified for P. corrugata A. Nelson and P. orbicularis Rydb. A new nomenclatural combination for P. crenulata var. angustifolia N.D. Atwood is established to elevate that variety to species rank, as Phacelia angustifolia (N.D. Atwood) Walden, comb. et stat. nov.

Most sense organs of arthropods are ensconced in small exoskeletal compartments that hinder direct access to plasma membranes. We have developed a method for exposing live sensory and supporting cells in such structures. The technique uses a viscous light cured resin to embed and support the structure, which is then sliced with a sharp blade. We term the procedure a “goggatomy,” from the Khoisan word for a bug, gogga. To demonstrate the utility of the method we show that it can be used to expose the auditory chordotonal organs in the second antennal segment and the olfactory receptor neurons …

Cannabis use has been associated with episodic memory (EM) impairments and abnormal hippocampus morphology among both healthy individuals and schizophrenia subjects. Considering the hippocampus' role in EM, research is needed to evaluate the relationship between cannabis-related hippocampal morphology and EM among healthy and clinical groups. We examined differences in hippocampus morphology between control and schizophrenia subjects with and without a past (not current) cannabis use disorder (CUD). Subjects group-matched on demographics included 44 healthy controls (CON), 10 subjects with a CUD history (CON-CUD), 28 schizophrenia subjects with no history of substance use disorders (SCZ), and 15 schizophrenia subjects with a …
Haptic Shape-Based Management Of Robot Teams In Cordon And Patrol, Samuel Jacob Mcdonald
Haptic Shape-Based Management Of Robot Teams In Cordon And Patrol, Samuel Jacob Mcdonald
Theses and Dissertations
There are many current and future scenarios that require teams of air, ground or humanoid robots to gather information in complex and often dangerous environments, where it would be unreasonable or impossible for humans to be physically present [1-6]. The current state of the art involves a single robot being monitored by one or many human operators [7], but a single operator managing a team of autonomous robots is preferred as long as effective and time-efficient management of the team is maintained [8-9]. This is limited by the operator's ability to command actions of multiple robots, be aware of robot …
Learner Agency And Responsibility In Educational Technology, Michael Thomas Matthews
Learner Agency And Responsibility In Educational Technology, Michael Thomas Matthews
Theses and Dissertations
Though the topic of learner agency has received relatively little discussion in the literature of educational technology, it is nevertheless a significant and actually omnipresent concern of both scholars and practitioners. Through the journal-ready articles contained herein, I show how theories of learning and certain practices of instructional designers reflect implicit positions on the agency of learners. I also discuss agency in more concrete terms as the responsibility for learning that is shared with learners in instructional design contexts. In addition, I provide practical suggestions to help designers keep the learner at the forefront of their design thinking. Through this …
Effects Of A Tier 3 Self-Management Intervention With Parent Involvement On Academic Engagement And Disruptive Behavior, Ashley Nicole Lower
Effects Of A Tier 3 Self-Management Intervention With Parent Involvement On Academic Engagement And Disruptive Behavior, Ashley Nicole Lower
Theses and Dissertations
This manuscript includes two studies. The research design for study 1 was a single-subject reversal design, while study 2 was a case study with 5 experimental conditions. These studies investigated the effects of a Tier 3 peer-matching self-management intervention on two elementary school students who had previously been less responsive to Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions. The Tier 3 self-management intervention, which was implemented in the classroom, included daily electronic communication between teachers and the two students' parents. Results indicated that this intervention effectively reduced disruptive behaviors and increased total engagement when implemented with integrity; without integrity, results were …
Characterizing Interaction Between Pask And Pbp1/ Atxn2 To Regulate Cell Growth And Proliferation, Nidhi Rajan Choksi
Characterizing Interaction Between Pask And Pbp1/ Atxn2 To Regulate Cell Growth And Proliferation, Nidhi Rajan Choksi
Theses and Dissertations
Pbp1 is a component of glucose deprivation induced stress granules and is involved in P-body-dependent granule assembly. We have recently shown that Pbp1 plays an important role in the interplay between three sensory protein kinases in yeast: AMP-regulated kinase (Snf1 in yeast), PAS kinase 1 (Psk1 in yeast), and the target of rapamycin complex 1 (TORC1), to regulate glucose allocation during nutrient depletion. This signaling cascade occurs through the SNF1-dependent phosphorylation and activation of Psk1, which phosphorylates and activates poly(A)- binding protein binding protein 1 (Pbp1), which then inhibits TORC1 through sequestration at stress granules. In this study we further …

Plasmid Dna Bind And Elute Chromatography Using Borosilicate Filters And Filter Holders, Stacey D. Floyd, Camille S. Baird, Jordan Finnell, Tsz Ming Tsang, Robert C. Davis, Kenneth A. Christensen
Student Works
This research has been completed to determine whether plasmid DNA will bind to a simple borosilicate filter in a reusable filter holder, and whether it can be released in a controlled procedure after a wash has been done to eliminate impurities.
The motivation for this is to help small research groups, both in educational settings as well as in other small research settings be able to study isolated DNA without much of the expense generally associated with purification kits and to remove the limitations on trial numbers imposed by the expense of each individual isolation kit.
