A Study Of The Concerns Of Tenth And Eleventh Grade Seminary Students About The Thirty Five Directional Objectives Of The Lds Seminary System, Lemar Olyn Hanson

The purpose of this study was to determine whether LDS sophomore and junior seminary students have significant differences of concern about concepts and attitudes contained in each of the thirty-five Directional Objectives which guide the curriculum of the Seminary System of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The study involved LDS Seminary students from the Burley, Idaho; Arimo, Idaho and Ogden (Weber) Utah seminaries, and consisted of 164 sophomore and 109 junior students.
An instrument was developed called the Student Inventory. It consisted of statements of concern expressed by a cross section of seminary students about the thirty-five …

The Anti-Christian Background Of German Literary Naturalism, R. Max Rogers

German naturalism flourished in a time when Christianity as a whole was under attack. The philosophies of positivism and materialism, both of which challenged beliefs held by traditional Christianity, had a great impact on naturalist thinking. Charles Darwin's theories also extended beyond the discipline of natural sciences to reach the philosophical, religious, and literary realm. While some tried to reform the Christian church, others attempted to find a connection to God independent of organized religion. Others became indifferent while some became hostile toward Christianity. Each attitude found expression in German naturalism.

Presettlement Vegetation And Vegetational Change In Three Valleys In Central Utah, Earl M. Christensen, Hyrum B. Johnson

Historical information, survey records, and relict vegetation were used as sources of data for determining the nature of the presettlement vegetation of Pavant, Round, and Juab Valleys in central Utah. The foothills were covered with bunch grasses (principally Agropyron spicatum and Poa secunda), scattered junipers (Juniperus utahensis), and sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate). Western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii) was common on level areas within the foothills. Below the foothill region on the more gentle slopes and benchlands there was a broad belt dominated by bunch grasses. The grassy area intergraded into a zone dominated by northern …

To investigate the possibility that thiamine has more than one vital role in the mammalian system, it was decided to use the antagonists pyrithiamine and oxythiamine, and to utilize carbon-14 labeled compounds to more effectively study the vitamin and the above-named antagonists. To make it more effective, we felt that perhaps differences between the localization of oxythiamine and pyrithiamine could be detected in the brain. We also considered and tested the possibility that either or both of the antagonists would alter the localization of thiamine. Essentially, two procedures were used in this study. Distribution Patterns Of Pocket Gophers In The Hobble Creek Area, Utah County, Elvis J. Holt

This study was initiated to investigate the distribution patterns of two species of pocket gophers, Thomomys umbrinus albicaudatus Hall and T. talpoides wasatchensis Durrant whose ranges come together in the Hobble Creek area, Utah. The effect of certain ecological factors upon their distribution was determined. The ecological factors included: vegetation and land use, soil, moisture and exposure, hybridization and interspecific competition. From morphological examination no interbreeding was detected even though the breeding seasons of the two species correspond. A limited area was found where the ranges of the two species are in contact. A lack of available moisture was determined …

Serotonin is a normal constituent of the brain and has been claimed to act as a neurohormonal or regulatory agent in nerve transmission. Previous workers have only studied its whole brain or subcellular particulate distribution. Because the brain itself is divided into many distinct ganglia and nuclei, the distribution of serotonin in these sites is considered to be of greater importance than either the whole brain or subcellular distribution. This paper is a study of the distribution of serotonin in particular brain sites in rats with normal and elevated levels of the amine, with and without electroshock treatment. The results …

With reference to anatomical studies it appears that the aerpents are indeed a neglected group ot reptiles. Although some early writers recorded a few fragmentary obser-vations on the anatomy of snakes, no attempt was made to undertake a complete comprehensive study. Cole (1944) has rightfully referred to this section of vertebrate anatomy as "almost virgin field." The serpent area of reptilian anatomy is deserving ot a more intensive investigation because of the considerable number ot adaptations demonatrated by this group of reptiles in relation to their peculiar types ot locomotion and methods ot feeding. Fleas of the genus Foxella Wagner, commonly known as "gopher fleas," have various species of the mammal genus Thomomys Weid Neuweid in the Western United States as their hosts. Some workers maintain there are at least two species of fleas while others consider that all gopher fleas are of one species.
