A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed

Theses and Dissertations

Effective leadership in Islamic schools involves the incorporation of Islamic principles in the leadership behaviors and practices. With so much literature about the need of Islamic leadership in Islamic institutions in the United States, the problem addressed by the study was whether school principals in Islamic schools exhibited and led these schools according to the principles of Islamic leadership. The study described leadership approaches used by school principals in Islamic schools and how those leadership approaches were influenced by Islamic leadership principles, comparing the Islamic leadership principles derived from the literature with the leadership principles of principals of Islamic schools. …

School Psychologists' Perceived Concerns Regarding Crisis Intervention With Diverse Populations, Ana E. Kemple

Theses and Dissertations

With the ever-increasing diversity among students in the United States, American schools are seeing more of a mismatch between school personnel and students. Service provision has traditionally addressed multicultural competencies in the area of assessment and more recently in counseling procedures. With the increased attention given to school-related crises, the role of school psychologists has expanded to include crisis intervention. The current study will present information on the need for multicultural competencies in crisis intervention and assess the current concerns of nationally certified school psychologists in this area of service provision. Responses from a random sample of school psychologists (n= …

Freedom Of Choice And Hypnotic Communication In Psychotherapy And Public Address, Richard German Ellsworth

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Historical, theoretical and methodological aspects of clinical hypnosis relevant to free agency are reviewed, including therapeutic hypnotic communication techniques used by effective public speakers. Hypnosis is defined as specific techniques to capture and hold someone's attention, and is herein considered as simply a more sophisticated method of communication " which some effective public speakers and therapists do naturally, but which with study of these effective communication forms, therapists and speakers may learn to do with greater facility. Methods of applying specific hynotic techniques to enhance the efficacy of psychotherapy and public address are demonstrated, including indirect suggestion, rapport, presupposition, embedded …

Addressing Mormon Female Communities: Working Towards A Woman's Capacity, Alyssa Snow Larson Jan 2001

Addressing Mormon Female Communities: Working Towards A Woman's Capacity, Alyssa Snow Larson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project explores the discourse in Mormon culture addressing Mormon female communities. The discussion is sociological rather than theological and examines the functional characteristics of discourse found in the tradition regarding women. It sets out to review a paradox in the discourse addressing Mormon women that has been documented over time. I examine how this paradox in Mormon discourse establishes and limits women's roles; to do so, I use personal examples and the experience provided by thirteen women whom I interviewed.

The thesis is divided into three main discussions: Community, Discursive Action and Cooperation. My methodology involves a theoretical …

We briefly describe process considerations for using spiritual interventions and concluded by describing seven spiritual interventions we have found especially useful in treating LDS eating disorder patients, including spiritual teachings, spiritual bibliotherapy, and prayer.

Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of The Practices And Beliefs Of Amcap Members, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Three hundred members of the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists (AMCAP) were randomly selected and asked about their use of spiritual interventions in their professional work. Two hundred and fifteen (72%) AMCAP members responded to the survey and indicated that they use a wide variety of spiritual interventions. Praying silently for clients, teaching spiritual concepts, encouraging forgiveness, using the religious community as a support, and encouraging clients to pray were used much more frequently than were priesthood blessing by therapists, praying with clients, and asking clients to memorize scriptures. Critical incident case examples provided by the therapists revealed that …

Building The Kingdom Of God: Mormon Architecture Before 1847, W. Ray Luce Apr 1990

Building The Kingdom Of God: Mormon Architecture Before 1847, W. Ray Luce

BYU Studies

W. Ray Luce presents a history of the architecture in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in its first seventeen years of existence (1830-1847). He discusses how the architecture changed with the needs of the growing church. The buildings began to reveal and express symbolisms of the doctrines of the gospel. The Kirtland and Nauvoo Temples as well as the city of Nauvoo are discussed in great detail as the Saints learned more about the physical building up of the kingdom of God.

Behind The Veil: The Heavenly Mother Concept Among Members Of Women's Support Groups In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Allen W. Litchfield

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the belief in and use of the concept of Mother in Heaven among some women's support groups comprised of female members (and attached males) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The expectations were that those surveyed would express belief in Heavenly Mother, but that the concept would not be a central one. Various propositions suggested relationships between religious dimension, feminism, and alienation variables and belief in and salience of Mother in Heaven. Most of those surveyed believe in the Goddess, but the concept is underutilized among those surveyed. Belief in Mother in Heaven was …

The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer Jan 1968

The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The approach of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 posed several real and imagined threats to the Mormon Kingdom in the Great Basin. The Pacific Railroad ended Mormon geographic isolation and brought economic competition from the States. The railroad also made it possible for miners to get to the gold fields faster and with the heave equipment necessary to make Utah mining profitable. Sensing the political problems and the social and moral evils that would accompany the railroad, the Mormon leaders, in hopes of meeting these problems, counseled to extend their economic goal of self-sufficiency. Through stepped-up cooperation and unity they …
