Mary Bardenfleth - "I Remember'', Caroline Olsen

The Bridge

At several of Danebo Home summer festivals little one-act pieces were performed out on the lawn. Yes, there was a time when practically everyone of Danish origin understood and was happy to hear the Danish language. Now it is seldom that anything is done in Danish, although there is still the singing of Danish songs, especially in the Danish Reading Circle. This "Laesekreds" has existed for I don't know how many years. It is perhaps a continuation of St. Peder's Church Young People's Society. This latter group has certainly also been a live circle of men and women who met …

Christian Hansen, "The Fairy Tale Man", Johannes Knudsen, Gudrun Nielsen, Translator

The Bridge

My grandfather, Christian Hansen, came to Tyler, Minnesota, 100 years ago (1888) to make his home and to assist Pastor H. J. Pedersen in the building and founding of a folk high school. Pedersen had just been selected to be the first pastor of the newly formed congregation and the area was beginning to develop from virgin prairie to an agricultural community. Christian Hansen was a member of the first faculty of the folk school and throughout his long life he contributed much to establishing a Danish-American cultural enclave which became known as Danebod.

Creating A Shared History: Serial Narratives In The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894, Sherry Baker Dec 1988

Creating A Shared History: Serial Narratives In The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894, Sherry Baker

Faculty Publications

"Creating a Shared History: Serial Narratives in The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894" is a cultural press history and textual analysis of contemporary indigenous serial literature in a nineteenth-century Mormon young women's periodical. It tests press historian Catherine Covert's assertions that some of the functions of the press are (1) to be a conservator of values, and (2) to engender harmony and affiliation among community members. The investigator places the Journal within the historical/ cultural context from which it was written, and identifies specific messages in the serial narratives that encouraged the preservation of Mormon values and Mormon community affiliation. The …

Enduring Apprenticeships, Walter Angst

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Since I was two years older than my school chums and knew that I could not afford to go on to higher education, I quit secondary school after the second year. My dream was to become a graphic artist, devising posters. My father was afraid for me: if I would indulge in an artist's life, I surely would go to pot! He proposed instead that I learn the trade of a barber or, as a concession, a cabinet-maker. Consequently, I was apprenticed to a master cabinetmaker who promptly dismissed me after a few weeks as being too weak. After a …

A Comparison Of The Spherical Densiometer And Ocular Methods Of Estimating Canopy Cover, Robin S. Vora Apr 1988

A Comparison Of The Spherical Densiometer And Ocular Methods Of Estimating Canopy Cover, Robin S. Vora

Great Basin Naturalist

Percent tree canopy cover in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forest of northeastern California was estimated by the point intercept spherical densiometer and ocular methods. Estimates derived by the two methods were similar (P > .05). The ocular method is recommended when understory vegetation is tall or clumped instead of randomly distributed, or if available field time limits sample size.

Recollections Of Two Immigrant Sisters, James D. Iversen Jan 1988

Recollections Of Two Immigrant Sisters, James D. Iversen

The Bridge

My father's family were among those thousands of Danes who made their decision to emigrate to America in the last decade of the nineteenth century. On March 28, 1893, Peter Iversen and wife Kirstine and children Christine, 12 years, Karen, 10, Katherine, 8, Marie, 6, Mikkel, 5 and Laura, not quite 3 years old, sailed from Copenhagen on the "Thingvalla." The came first to Sioux CIty, Iowa, where Kirstine's brother Graves Mikkelsen had settled earlier. Times were not prosperous in 1893 in Sioux City, however so the family soon moved to a homestead site in Buffalo County, South Dakota, about …

Danish Perceptions And West Indian Realities: Slavery In The Danish West Indies, Karen Fog Olwig Jan 1988

Danish Perceptions And West Indian Realities: Slavery In The Danish West Indies, Karen Fog Olwig

The Bridge

The year 1987 marked the 70th anniversary of the sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States of America. With the sale of the three small islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, Denmark had disposed of all her tropical colonies, which at one time had included possessions on the Gold Coast in Africa, the present Ghana, and in southeastern India, most importantly Trankebar.

Devastation In Tyler, Jens B. Johansen, Thorvald Hansen, Translator Jan 1988

Devastation In Tyler, Jens B. Johansen, Thorvald Hansen, Translator

The Bridge

During the evening of August 21, 1918, the community of Tyler, Minnesota, was struck by a severe tornado. Many people were killed, many more injured, and the damage to property was tremendous. The letter, written in Danish, which follows is a first-hand account of what that thriving community looked like after the storm. In some places this account is gruesome, in other places it is subtly humorous, and in all places it is a graphic presentation of the havoc that can be wreaked in a few moments.
