The Reasons For This Book And How It Came To Be Published, Max Henius Jan 2012

The Reasons For This Book And How It Came To Be Published, Max Henius

The Bridge

The appearance of this little book has come about primarily because of the Danish-born Americans’ Festival in the Rebild Hills this year. We have for some time wished to assemble representatives from all Danish American camps and communities in these United States and to meet at one spot within our country of origin. This year, for the first time, we will have managed to do that, as it has become more and more clear how little those of us from the old country know about each other, because we live so far apart, and we are thus unable to understand …

The Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church In America, P. Gøtke Jan 2012

The Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church In America, P. Gøtke

The Bridge

I do not propose to write here a complete history of the Danish Church as it was established in America—the full story of the Danish Church in America has yet to arrive at its conclusion. Instead, I offer here a brief overview of the work of the church among the immigrants to the United States, drawing the attention of the readers of this book to particular points.

Young People’S Schools And Højskoler In The United States, J. Christian Bay Jan 2012

Young People’S Schools And Højskoler In The United States, J. Christian Bay

The Bridge

It can be said that an organized effort to preserve Danish language and culture has existed here in America since the beginning of the seventies. The immigrants considered it essential that they develop plans to strengthen and design general education for young adults. Among the immigrants who immediately joined the Church right from the beginning, there were few academics. However, because many knew about the højskole concept in Denmark, this concept became the foundation for their church-sheltered schools.

The Danish Folk Society, J. S. Faaborg Jan 2012

The Danish Folk Society, J. S. Faaborg

The Bridge

The “Danish Folk Society” was established in the spring of 1887. On April 18 of that year a public invitation was issued for the establishment of the society, and from April 18 till April 21 this year the society celebrated its 25th anniversary here in Clinton, Iowa. The celebration took place at the location where the idea got its start and where the plans were laid.

The Danish-Born American Newly Arrived In The Cities, Carl Antonsen Jan 2012

The Danish-Born American Newly Arrived In The Cities, Carl Antonsen

The Bridge

To begin this little essay, which can only amount to a few scattered remarks because of its place and its general nature, I want to repeat some of what I was able to say in a speech in Aarhus on Danish-American Day on July 4, 1909:

“Speaking as I undoubtedly am on this occasion to those whose longing to travel has been or soon will be focused on America; I cannot emphasize strongly enough that the United States is not a paradise, not the utopia about which C.H. Winther and H.C. Andersen sang. America is the Promised Land only for …

Tabulated Overview Of Congregations And Organizations, Max Henius Jan 2012

Tabulated Overview Of Congregations And Organizations, Max Henius

The Bridge

The number of Danish-born people is listed for each State. The first number is the Danish-born population after the last Census in 1910. The number in parentheses is the number from the 1900 Census. If there is only one number, it is taken from the 1900 Census.

Bibliography, Max Henius Jan 2012

Bibliography, Max Henius

The Bridge

The following list of books contain—as far as we have been able to ascertain—most of those books which have been written in Danish by Danish-American authors. Included in the list are those Danish authors who have written about conditions in America or which have been published by Danish American publishers. The multitudes of other Danish authors have not been included. We do not make the claim that the list is complete, it has simply been quite difficult to ensure completeness in the short time we have had available. We have not included those small publications which may have been published …

The Development Of The Danish Immigrant On American Soil, Sophus F. Neble Jan 2012

The Development Of The Danish Immigrant On American Soil, Sophus F. Neble

The Bridge

Is the Danish immigrant to the United States quickly naturalized?

This is a question people home in Denmark often ask me, and I will answer both yes and no.

Yes! In as much as it is a known fact that the Danish immigrant, to a higher degree than most other nationalities, takes advantage of his right to apply for “first papers” soon after his arrival.

No! In as much as many Danes, who have received these naturalization papers, never go so far as to get the last citizenship papers and therefore do not become full citizens. If the reason is …

Dansk Sammensluttet Ungdom—D. S. U. The Association Of Danish Youth, Erik Appel Jan 2012

Dansk Sammensluttet Ungdom—D. S. U. The Association Of Danish Youth, Erik Appel

The Bridge

This year, it has been exactly 10 years since the Association of Danish Youth clubs was initiated within the Danish Church. There most likely were Danish youth groups before 1902, but they had little or no connection with each other. They were missing the spur that unity can give and the strength to be found in solidarity.

The Danish-American Society (Dansk-Amerikansk Selskab), C .H. W. Hasselriis Jan 2012

The Danish-American Society (Dansk-Amerikansk Selskab), C .H. W. Hasselriis

The Bridge

The purpose of the Danish-American Society is summarized in concise form in its Constitution: to promote a reciprocal and better understanding of the Danish and the American peoples, to knit closer ties between these two nations, and to advance the interests of both.

The work of solving these tasks is still only in its infancy, so, consequently, this is not a history of the Society.

The Bridge

In addition to the nationally-connected associations listed in the previous chapters, in some cities and towns where DanishAmericans live in large numbers, there are many scattered associations that have no structured national connection.

The United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church In America: A Brief Overview Of Its History And Activity, P. S. Vig Jan 2012

The United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church In America: A Brief Overview Of Its History And Activity, P. S. Vig

The Bridge

“The United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America” is the name of an organization of congregations and pastors who are among those Danes who have immigrated to America, and who desire to hold firmly to the faith in which they were baptized, to remain in that church to which they have belonged since childhood, and who want to support the effort to preserve that faith in their adopted land and pass that heritage on to their children. This goal is not attainable except by mutual work, sacrifice and effort. “The United Church,” as we are now used to saying in …

The Danish-American Press, Mads Henningsen Jan 2012

The Danish-American Press, Mads Henningsen

The Bridge

A half century ago, the split between Danish and Norwegian in the United States was not as sharply delineated as it is now. The two nations’ work and interests overlapped on many points. Thus it was a Danish man, Claus Lauridsen Clausen, who was the first pastor among the Norwegians in America. This same man began in 1853 the publication of the magazine “Emigranten” [The Emigrant], which addressed both Norwegian and Danish readers. This magazine still exists as “Minneapolis Tidende” [The Minneapolis Times] and is one of the largest and most widely-distributed Norwegian-American magazines. In 1847, a Danish man in …

Regulations Concerning Immigration And Citizenship, C. V. Eberlin Jan 2012

Regulations Concerning Immigration And Citizenship, C. V. Eberlin

The Bridge

Americans, both the native born and the immigrants, are proud of their country. It is their firm belief that there isn’t a country in the world where the working class is so well off and has such a good lifestyle as over here, that America has far less illness and fewer cripples than most other countries, that America, morally, is far above any other country, and that no other country can show the same degree of freedom, equality, and brotherhood than the United States of America.

The Danish Brotherhood In America, L. L. Ries Jan 2012

The Danish Brotherhood In America, L. L. Ries

The Bridge

The Danish Brotherhood originally branched off from the “Danish Brothers in Arms,” which was established in Omaha in 1881. Already a few years before, some local groups of “Brothers in Arms” had been established here and there, by men who had participated in the wars of 1848 and 1864. What especially tied the members together was the desire for social get-togethers and to refresh memories from the war years and to give mutual assistance in case of illness.

Gospel-Centered Psychotherapy: What It Is And Why It Matters, P. Scott Richards, Kristin L. Hansen Jan 2012

Gospel-Centered Psychotherapy: What It Is And Why It Matters, P. Scott Richards, Kristin L. Hansen

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The dialogue about gospel-centered psychotherapy in the Latter-day Saint mental health community began approximately 50 years ago. In this article we briefly summarize and discuss some of the significant events, issues, and accomplishments in this dialogue and effort. We offer definitions of gospel-centered psychotherapy and gospel-based psychotherapy. We concur with others that there is not "one true" gospel-centered psychotherapy, theory, or approach, but we suggest that gospel-centered psychotherapists have developed many different forms of gospel-centered treatment over the years. We argue that gospel-centered approaches to psychotherapy do share some common characteristics, including the therapist's moral character and spiritual preparation, the …

Atheist Piety: A Religion Of Dogmatic Dubiety, Louis C. Midgley Jan 2012

Atheist Piety: A Religion Of Dogmatic Dubiety, Louis C. Midgley

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The “Special Feature” of this mass-market secular humanist magazine consists of an introduction to “America’s Peculiar Piety” followed by a miscellany of brief, nonscholarly essays critical of The Church of Jesus Christ. The questions posed in the introduction to this flagship atheist magazine go unad dressed in the essays. Some of the essays are personal exit stories by former Latter-day Saints. One is an effort by Robert M. Price to explain away the Book of Mormon without confronting its contents. This is done by ignoring the details of Joseph Smith’s career in order to picture him as the equivalent of …

Kathryn Duncan, Editor Religion In The Age Of Reason: A Transatlantic Study Of The Long Eighteenth Century: Book Review, David B. Paxman

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

When asked what would follow race, class, and gender as the new "center of intellectual energy in the academy:' Stanley Fish answered, "religion" (ix). Kathryn Duncan's collection of twelve essays in Religion in the Age of Reason: A Transatlantic Study of the Long Eighteenth Century turns our attention in that direction and, in so doing, demonstrates why religion merits greater attention. Six of the twelve essays have appeared in an issue of AMS's Symbolism: An International Annual of Critical Aesthetics, volume 4, edited by Duncan.

“I Have Revealed Your Name”: The Hidden Temple In John 17, William J. Hamblin Jan 2012

“I Have Revealed Your Name”: The Hidden Temple In John 17, William J. Hamblin

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

John 17 contains a richly symbolic Last Discourse by Jesus, in which the disciples are assured a place in the Father’s ce lestial house or temple. To fulfill this promise Christ reveals both the Father’s name and his glory to his disciples. Jesus’s discourse concludes with the promise of sanctification of the disciples, and their unification—or deification—with Christ and the Father. T his paper explores how each of these ideas reflects the temple theology of the Bible and contemporary first-century Judaism.

Performance Monitoring Following Conflict: Internal Adjustments In Cognitive Control?, Scott A. Baldwin, Michael J. Larson, Peter E. Clayson Jan 2012

Performance Monitoring Following Conflict: Internal Adjustments In Cognitive Control?, Scott A. Baldwin, Michael J. Larson, Peter E. Clayson

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of strategic conflict-related adjustments in cognitive control processes on indices of performance monitoring. Previous research has examined the ability of parametric task-related manipulations to bias attention to errors; however, the present study sought to elucidate the effects of internal adjustments in control mediated by the anterior cingulate cortex on error-related conflict processing. High-density event-related potentials (ERPs) were obtained from 124 healthy individuals (68 female, 66 male) during a modified Eriksen flanker task. Behavioral measures (i.e., error rates, response times [RTs]) and N2 amplitudes showed significant conflict adaptation (i.e., previous-trial congruencies …

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Motivational Strategies In The Foreign Language Classroom, Ashley Ruesch, Jennifer Brown, Dan Dewey Jan 2012

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Motivational Strategies In The Foreign Language Classroom, Ashley Ruesch, Jennifer Brown, Dan Dewey

Faculty Publications

The present paper reports on a study that builds upon Do¨rnyei and Csize´r’s and Cheng and Do¨rnyei’s research on the teaching practices foreign language instructors consider most motivational. The study utilized an instrument based on that of Do¨rnyei and Csize´r, but changed the cultural context in which the survey was administered (North America) and added the perspective of foreign language students. The results of the study offer further support to the findings of the earlier studies. Findings also suggest additional cross-cultural differences in perceptions of motivational teaching practices. Furthermore, the present study underscores the importance of including students’ perspectives on …

An Analysis Of High Impact Scholarship And Publication Trends In Blended Learning, Lisa R. Halverson, Charles R. Graham, Kristian J. Spring, Jeffrey S. Drysdale

Faculty Publications

Blended learning is a diverse and expanding area of design and inquiry that combines face-to-face and online modalities. As blended learning research matures, numerous voices enter the conversation. This study begins the search for the center of this emerging area of study by finding the most cited scholarship on blended learning. Using Harzing’s Publish or Perish software (http:// www.harzing.com/pop.htm), we determined the most frequently cited books, book chapters, and articles on the subject of blended learning, as well as the journals in which these highly cited articles appeared. Through these findings we offer some conclusions about where the conversations about …

Chasing The Double-Bottom Line: Fair Trade And The Elusive Win–Win, Curtis Child Jan 2012

Chasing The Double-Bottom Line: Fair Trade And The Elusive Win–Win, Curtis Child

Faculty Publications

Social enterprises embody a problematic proposition. They are premised on the idea that it is possible to create simultaneously social and economic value in a direct, explicit way, yet it would seem that each of these goals is in some amount in consequential tension with the other. The argument of social enterprise is nevertheless that one outcome – financial or social returns – need not be seen as the eventual by-product of focusing on the other, but rather that both can be productively pursued in an immediate sense. Scholars have only started to examine in detail how social enterprises accomplish …
