Religious Literacies As Social Practice: A Latterday Saint Perspective, Eric D. Rackley Sep 2018

Religious Literacies As Social Practice: A Latterday Saint Perspective, Eric D. Rackley

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Although we are learning more about how young people make sense of religious truths, there is a conspicuous dearth of research examining the meaning-making practices of Latter-day Saint youth. As a result, it is unclear, for example, how Latter-day Saint youth read scripture. What’s working for them? What’s not? How do we know? “Faith without understanding” may be the sardonic standard for religious literacy in the United States, but I am confident that in the Church we can do better. We can help youth develop faith and understanding. Without a clearly articulated conception of religious literacy, however, the Church may …

One of the hallmarks of any assessment or evaluation is that it serves as an agent for improved change. However, not all changes are positive. In some cases, improvements in one area of library service delivery have negative effects in other areas of service delivery. In addition to this, no assessment is ever perfectly planned nor conducted. Each of these factors contributes to the need for library assessments to be periodically repeated. This chapter begins with a description of an assessment planning guide and journal to chronicle how the assessment was planned and unfolded. From here it discusses factors of …

Advancing Social Connection As A Public Health Priority In The United States, Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Theodore Robles, David A. Sbarra Sep 2018

Advancing Social Connection As A Public Health Priority In The United States, Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Theodore Robles, David A. Sbarra

A robust body of scientific evidence indicates that being embedded in high-quality close relationships and feeling socially connected to the people in your life is associated with decreased risk for all-cause mortality as well as a range of disease morbidities. Despite mounting evidence that the magnitude of these associations is comparable to many leading health determinants (that receive significant public health resources), government agencies, healthcare providers and associations, and public/private healthcare funders are slow to recognize human social relationships as either a health determinant or health risk marker in a manner that is comparable to other public health priorities. This …

A Nordic Anomaly: Examining The Establishment Of An Anti-Immigrant Party In Sweden, Louise Paulsen Aug 2018

A Nordic Anomaly: Examining The Establishment Of An Anti-Immigrant Party In Sweden, Louise Paulsen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the establishment of an anti-immigrant party (AIP) in Sweden. Until recently, Sweden was known as the Nordic anomaly with no AIP in spite of high levels of immigration and high rates of right-wing violence. This has now changed, and the AIP, Sweden Democrats, are rising to popularity in high speed. I examine the causes given for the anomaly up until 2006 and show that a change in these has since created a favorable environment for an AIP to become successful. First, socio-economic cleavages have become less salient through decreasing party loyalty and increasing numbers of party switchers. …

Academic Communities Of Engagement And Their Influence On Student Engagement, Kristian Joy Spring Aug 2018

Academic Communities Of Engagement And Their Influence On Student Engagement, Kristian Joy Spring

Theses and Dissertations

Learner engagement is a critical aspect of education. While technology is rapidly developing to act in increasingly personalized, and in some dimensions human, ways, we submit that a human community may uniquely support increased student engagement. This research explored the characteristics and effects of the interactions and relationships that constitute three distinct communities in education and examined their influences on student engagement. In the format of a multiple-article dissertation I present three articles. The first article reviewed relevant literature about interactions, relationships, and communities in education. It focused specifically on online and blended contexts and their connections to student engagement. Interactions, …

Look Again—Traditional Women As Nontraditional Students: A New Face In Higher Education, Candi Jones Newell Aug 2018

Look Again—Traditional Women As Nontraditional Students: A New Face In Higher Education, Candi Jones Newell

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the experiences of 13 culturally traditional women who returned to higher education as nontraditional students. An individual unstructured interview, with guiding questions, was held with each woman. This provided the opportunity for these women to articulate their experience. The interviews were transcribed and interpreted using a synthesis of qualitative methods based upon Kvale's method. Seven themes emerged: (a) participants would tell a woman considering a return to school to "do it!" (b) participants saw spousal support as significant in their ability to return to school, (c) participants saw their families as generally supportive of their return to …

In the present article we explore how family prayer reportedly influenced family relationships. We conceptualized family prayer as a family ritual in religious families and used a qualitative methodology to interview a religiously, ethnically, and geographically diverse sample of 198 families (N = 476). Analysis of data revealed 7 related themes. Family prayer served important functions and influenced relationships in various ways including (a) as time of family togetherness and interaction; (b) as a space for social support; and (c) as a means for intergenerational transmission of religion. Further, family prayer (d) involved issues and concerns of individuals and …

Teaching The Doctrine Of The Family: A South African Example, Khumbulani D. Mdletshe, Michael A. Goodman Jul 2018

Teaching The Doctrine Of The Family: A South African Example, Khumbulani D. Mdletshe, Michael A. Goodman

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Early in 2015, I visited my aunt’s home. She lives in one of the largest townships in South Africa, an urban residential area with a predominantly black African population. Townships often have higher unemployment, greater poverty, and younger populations than other areas in South Africa. Townships also tend to have higher levels of risk behaviors such as drug abuse, unprotected sex, and crime. This was my first visit to my aunt’s home in five years. As I entered the home, I noticed some young people I had never met. My aunt, who is in her early sixties, began to introduce …

Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) And Timely Bachelor's Degree Attainment, Carolina Otero Jul 2018

Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) And Timely Bachelor's Degree Attainment, Carolina Otero

Theses and Dissertations

It is well established that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to health and emotional outcomes. But less is known about the relationship between ACEs and educational attainment—a potentially important feature of educational stratification in America. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), a nationally representative youth study of 7-12th grade students in the 1994-95 school year, I investigate whether ACEs is linked to post-secondary attainment and examine the role of health and socio-emotional factors as mediators. Results confirm that there is a graded relationship between ACEs and timely bachelor's degree attainment. I find that …

Hope For Utah:? Exploring The Long-Term Impacts Of Peer-Based Suicide Prevention Among Adolescents, Meagan Rose Rainock Jul 2018

Hope For Utah:? Exploring The Long-Term Impacts Of Peer-Based Suicide Prevention Among Adolescents, Meagan Rose Rainock

Theses and Dissertations

Current research studies on the success of peer-based outreach programs for adolescent suicide prevention are inconclusive (Mann et al. 2005; Gould et al. 2003). Fewer still have measured the feelings and experiences of the peers who are responsible for reaching out to suicidal friends within such a program. This exploratory research study examines the experiences and perspectives of past participants of an adolescent peer-based outreach program, Hope4Utah. Findings from this mixed-method study of Hope4Utah support that peer-outreach suicide prevention programs have far-reaching benefits, on both the participants and their surrounding communities, which extend into adulthood. Themes that emerged from analysis …

Does Dietary Behavior Mediate The Association Between Hedonic Hunger And Bmi In Overweight/Obese Adolescents?, Kirandeep Kaur Jul 2018

Does Dietary Behavior Mediate The Association Between Hedonic Hunger And Bmi In Overweight/Obese Adolescents?, Kirandeep Kaur

Theses and Dissertations

Heightened reward associated with palatable food, a construct referred to as hedonic reward, can promote excessive energy intake among adults. However, no known studies have examined the influence of hedonic reward on adolescents' eating behavior and weight status. The present study examined whether there was an association between hedonic hunger and weight status in overweight/obese adolescents and whether dietary behavior (caloric consumption) mediated this association. Baseline measures of body mass index, hedonic food reward, and dietary intake were collected from one hundred overweight and obese adolescents. Data were analyzed using mixture modeling. Mediation at varying levels of hedonic hunger was …

Associations Among Different Types Of Prosocial Behavior Toward Friends, Friendship Quality, And Mental Health Outcomes During Adolescence, Daye Son Jul 2018

Associations Among Different Types Of Prosocial Behavior Toward Friends, Friendship Quality, And Mental Health Outcomes During Adolescence, Daye Son

Theses and Dissertations

The current study used a multidimensional approach to prosocial behavior by a) exploring various types of adolescent prosocial behavior toward friends (physical helping, sharing, defending, emotional support, including) using both qualitative and quantitative data, and b) examining longitudinal associations among prosocial behavior toward friends, friendship quality, and mental health (anxiety, life satisfaction, depression). The data were taken from Waves 8, 9, and 10 of the Flourishing Families Project. Participants at Wave 8 consisted of 470 adolescents (M age = 18.4 years, SD = 1.04, 49% male, 32% high school students, 33% single-parent families) from the United States. Results revealed that …

Age, Plans To Move, And Perceptions Of Collective Efficacy, Wesley B. Jeffrey Jul 2018

Age, Plans To Move, And Perceptions Of Collective Efficacy, Wesley B. Jeffrey

Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing recognition that to more fully understand the complex dynamics of neighborhoods and communities, we must effectively link the micro- and macro-level dimensions of community processes. As important as collective efficacy at the macro level has been shown to be, literature looking at factors shaping the individual-level experience is relatively scarce. Since the latent community attribute of collective efficacy is largely measured as a function of individual perceptions, understanding what affects the individual is vital, especially in light of within-neighborhood heterogeneity. In this study, I use insights from social disorganization theory, the systemic model to community attachment, …

El Futuro Ya Está Aquí: A Comparative Analysis Of Punk In Spain And Mexico, Rex Richard Wilkins Jul 2018

El Futuro Ya Está Aquí: A Comparative Analysis Of Punk In Spain And Mexico, Rex Richard Wilkins

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the punk genre's evolution into commercial mainstream music in Spain and Mexico. It looks at how this evolution altered both the aesthetic and gesture of the genre. This evolution can be seen by examining four bands that followed similar musical and commercial trajectories. In Spain, Kaka de Luxe and Radio Futura; in Mexico, Size and Ritmo Peligroso. Since punk music's gesture is both visceral and political, various methods of suppressing or containing the punk gesture arise. For both Spain and Mexico, containing the punk gesture was a matter of government censorship in the early years of punk. …

Relational Empowerment: The Longitudinal Influence Of Perceived Marital Power On Marital Quality And Attachment Security Over Five Years Of Marriage, Nathan D. Leonhardt Jul 2018

Relational Empowerment: The Longitudinal Influence Of Perceived Marital Power On Marital Quality And Attachment Security Over Five Years Of Marriage, Nathan D. Leonhardt

Theses and Dissertations

Perceiving shared power in marriage has been linked to higher marital quality and lower attachment insecurity. Yet limited research has examined whether perception of power has a longitudinal influence on how both spouses' perceptions play a role in both spouses' outcomes. To address previous limitations, I utilized 319 couples (94.7% retention from Wave 1) from the Flourishing Families Project to estimate bi-yearly (Waves 1, 3, and 5) and yearly (Waves 3-5) longitudinal actor-partner interdependence models. Reporting shared power in marriage was linked to the actors' higher marital quality and lower attachment insecurity over time (though less consistently for attachment insecurity). …

Tv Dads: A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Viewer Perceptions Of Fathers In Television Dramas, Katherine Ann Barboza Jul 2018

Tv Dads: A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Viewer Perceptions Of Fathers In Television Dramas, Katherine Ann Barboza

Theses and Dissertations

The present study aims to identify what viewer perceptions individuals have regarding fathers in television dramas. Framed through uses and gratifications theory and executed through the grounded theory method, 12 participants were interviewed. After analysis, findings revealed that although participants say that general perceptions of fathers on TV are negative, they have seen personally the diversity and variety of father portrayals in their favorite television dramas. Additionally, the realism of the TV dramas and characters influence the relatability to both the father figures and other characters in the show. This relatability, in turn, influences the likeability and loyalty to the …

Nonprofit Public Relationships On Social Media: The Public's Perspective, Brooke Lauren Smith Jul 2018

Nonprofit Public Relationships On Social Media: The Public's Perspective, Brooke Lauren Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This work explores the effect of social media on expectations held by nonprofit publics as they seek to build and maintain relationships with nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in the context of expectancy violation theory, social capital, and the situational theory of publics. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 individuals who follow a nonprofit on social media to understand the public perspective on nonprofit organizations' relationship building and maintaining behaviors on social media. The study found that nonprofit publics do have specific expectations for how NPOs should build and maintain relationships on social media (i.e., high-quality posts, level of interaction being limited …

Practical Poststructuralism For Confronting Wicked Problems, Vanessa Schweizer, Ricarda Scheele, Hannah Kosow Jun 2018

Practical Poststructuralism For Confronting Wicked Problems, Vanessa Schweizer, Ricarda Scheele, Hannah Kosow

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper discusses an innovative qualitative-quantitative modelling method relevant to two characteristics of wicked problems: they have no definitive formulation, and the choice of how they are defined or explained determines the nature of their resolution. Through projects conceptualizing the human dimensions of climate change, the socio-technical dynamics of the Energiewende (Germany’s low-carbon energy transition), and of water futures of a megacity (Lima), it has been found that the system-theoretic method of cross-impact balances (CIB) reveals fundamental assumptions in interdisciplinary modelling projects and opens them up for investigation. This can democratize modelling exercises while preserving scientific credibility. It can also …

Culture Influences On Human Decision-Making Processes Toward Environmental Policy: An Integrative Model Of Human-Environment Interaction, Gabriel Granco, Jessica Heier Stamm, Jason Bergtold, Melinda Daniels, Matthew Sanderson, Aleksey Sheshukov, Martha Mather, David Haukos, Marcellus Caldas Jun 2018

Culture Influences On Human Decision-Making Processes Toward Environmental Policy: An Integrative Model Of Human-Environment Interaction, Gabriel Granco, Jessica Heier Stamm, Jason Bergtold, Melinda Daniels, Matthew Sanderson, Aleksey Sheshukov, Martha Mather, David Haukos, Marcellus Caldas

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Anthropogenic era marks the role of humans as agents of planetary modification. In this era, the search for sustainability in human-environment interactions has pushed the development of modeling techniques able to incorporate dynamic natural and human feedbacks across temporal and spatial scales. While researchers have refined models for both natural and human systems separately, the coupling of these systems via model integration continues to be a challenge. In response, researchers have concentrated their attention on how human decision-making processes respond to and affect the environment. New pathways to sustainability may be developed by examining how human culture informs the …

Urban Demand Forecast Modeling: A Systematic Approach To Modern Modeling And Forecasting In El Paso, Tallen Capt, Shane Walker, Ali Mirchi Jun 2018

Urban Demand Forecast Modeling: A Systematic Approach To Modern Modeling And Forecasting In El Paso, Tallen Capt, Shane Walker, Ali Mirchi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Modern day water management operators make decisions based on understanding future demands in the short, medium, and long-term time frames. The application of the many sociological, environmental, and policy driven components to how water is used in a city can be disaggregated into individual components using a multi-method modeling approach. Using a mechanistic modeling method and four data sets, regional temperature, regional precipitation, historic water production values, and historic population, combined with unique constants that describe city behavior can form a universal method for characterizing and modeling city water usage. For the city of El Paso using this methodology water …

Stakeholder Driven Watershed Modeling To Inform Drought-Adaptive Water Management In The Rio Grande Project Area, Maryam Samimi, Ali Mirchi, William L. Hargrove, Josiah Heyman, Nolan Thomas Townsend, David Gutzler, So Ra Ahn, Zhuping Sheng

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The semi-arid Rio Grande-Rio Bravo (RGRB) Basin in southwestern U.S. has growing water conflict potential due to increasing demand for already-stressed water resources to support irrigated agriculture, growing urban areas, and riparian ecosystems while facing increasing aridity. The multitude of stakeholders from disparate water demand sectors complicates reaching consensus about “water futures” in this borderland region. In this research, we apply watershed modeling to support stakeholder engagement in the dialogue about water sustainability. An initial, comprehensive stakeholder survey revealed broad interest in better understanding plausible impacts of climate change on surface water and groundwater availability and associated implications for irrigated …

Examples Of Optimal Integration In The Iwrm Field:A Review, R.W. Vervoort, Suzanne A. Pierce Jun 2018

Examples Of Optimal Integration In The Iwrm Field:A Review, R.W. Vervoort, Suzanne A. Pierce

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Research and application of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) aims at combining the strengths of both social and biophysical sciences to merge stakeholder preferences and negotiation with natural resource modelling. In theory, each of these fields (biophysical modelling and social science) should, on average, equally contribute to the resulting management or policy outcome. This we would see as ‘optimal’. This then raises the question, whether this can be identified from reported individual case studies. In this study, we used a data mining approach on the literature, seeking to identify clear examples of integration of biophysical modelling and social science, the …

Sustainable Surface-Subsurface Water Use In Ergene River Basin Turkey, Mohsen Mahmoody Vanolya, Ahmet Dogan Prof. Dr, Güleda Engin Prof. Dr. Jun 2018

Sustainable Surface-Subsurface Water Use In Ergene River Basin Turkey, Mohsen Mahmoody Vanolya, Ahmet Dogan Prof. Dr, Güleda Engin Prof. Dr.

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A methodology known as Multi-Objective Water Cycle Algorithm (MOWCA) was developed for sustainable use of water at the river basin scale. This novel metaheuristic technique is similar to a Genetic Algorithm that uses natural hydrologic cycle components i.e., rainfall, evaporation, flow routing, as elements of evolutionary optimization tools. This methodology has been applied to the Ergene River Basin that has an area of 11 020 km2 in northwestern Europe and part of Turkey near the Istanbul metropolitan area. In this basin, groundwater has been exploited densely by seven organized industrial zone centers since 1995. Their waste water is discharged into …

Exploratory Participatory Modeling With Fcm To Overcome Uncertainty: Improving Safety Culture In Oil And Gas Operations, Ahmed Alibage, Antonie J. Jetter, Payam Aminpour, Steven A. Gray, Steven Scyphers

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This work combines qualitative text analysis, participatory modeling with Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM) with Exploratory Modelling and Analysis (EMA). FCM is suitable for modeling in data-poor environments when the system under study is not well described in quantitative terms. A case in point is safety culture, which describes the values, routines, and work processes that allow an organization to prevent disasters by avoiding and quickly bouncing back from mistakes. The concept is particularly relevant in oil and gas industry, where initially small errors have potentially devastating environmental, social, and economic impacts. In this setting relevant quantitative data on safety culture …
