Sahs Presentation At The Swiss Society Of Boston’S Annual Meeting

Swiss American Historical Society Review

On Saturday, April 12, SAHS President Thomas Quinn Marabello was invited to speak at the Swiss Society of Boston’s annual meeting and dinner in Boston, Massachusetts. It was held at the Hampshire House in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, a mansion built in 1911 by architect Ogden Codman, Jr., who designed several mansions in Newport, Rhode Island, including The Breakers. The five-story Georgian revival townhouse with Italian marble and Palladian windows look out onto Boston Public Garden. The first residents, Bayard and Ruth Thayer, held many salons there and it became Boston’s preeminent salon. In the 1940s, Hampshire House became a …

On The Linguistic History Of The Swiss Amish In Indiana, Tobias Frick Jun 2025

On The Linguistic History Of The Swiss Amish In Indiana, Tobias Frick

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Between 1789 and 1914, about half a million Swiss citizens left their country to find new opportunities abroad.1 By 1880, more than 88,000 Swiss had settled in the United States of America.2 These immigrants carried not only their earthly possessions and their knowledge to the foreign lands, but also brought their Swiss German dialects i.e. their linguistic varieties with them. In most settlements, the Swiss vernaculars were replaced by the majority language of English at some point. The Swiss settlers in New Glarus, Wisconsin, for example, upheld their linguistic variety for several generations before shifting to English.3 An exception is …

From The Ambassador’S Desk, C. Naseer Ahmad

Swiss American Historical Society Review

An ambassador is an official representative appointed by a country’s government to manage diplomatic relations and promote its interests in a foreign nation or international organization. This role is as vital as it is diverse, involving a wide array of responsibilities that go beyond traditional diplomacy. Ambassadors must deftly juggle numerous tasks, all essential to the development and maintenance of peaceful international relationships. They serve not only as representatives of their nation’s government but also as stewards of its interests, charged with boosting economic, cultural, and political ties with their host country.

Unwarranted Warrants?: An Empirical Analysis Of Judicial Review In Search And Seizure, Brett James Hashimoto, Miguel F.P. De Figueiredo, Dane Thorley

Faculty Publications

Every year, police perform searches governed by the Fourth Amendment on hundreds of thousands of individuals and their property throughout the United States. Many of the academy’s most decorated scholars have focused on the genesis and jurisprudential nature of the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement. Surprisingly, we know almost nothing about how the Fourth Amendment regulates searches and how searches actually work in practice.

In this Article, we pull back the curtain on the search and seizure process by presenting the largest quantitative study of warrants of any kind. We analyze over 33,000 warrant applications filed through Utah’s “e-Warrants” system over …

B17 Aircraft, Known As “Denny Boy”, Yvon Bordet

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The B17 “Denny Boy” took off from the British base at Thurleigh (England) on the night of Saturday, July 15 to Sunday, July 16, 1944. Objective: To bomb the BMW factories in Munich (Germany).

The aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire near its target, then again on the return to Mulhouse. Smoke filled the cockpit, an engine failed and the plane lost altitude. The captain decided to attempt a landing in neutral Switzerland. But it was in a small field, near a chapel, that he miraculously managed to land the bomber, in the commune of Féternes... in France, just a …

The Risk Of Marginal Inclusion In The Fortune 500: A Quasi-Replication Of Lewis & Carlos (2023), W. Chad Carlos, Yasir Dewan, Ben W. Lewis, Brian P. Reschke, S. Isaac St. Clair May 2025

The Risk Of Marginal Inclusion In The Fortune 500: A Quasi-Replication Of Lewis & Carlos (2023), W. Chad Carlos, Yasir Dewan, Ben W. Lewis, Brian P. Reschke, S. Isaac St. Clair

Faculty Publications

Conventional wisdom suggests that being included in an exclusive ranking leads to positive external evaluations. However, Lewis and Carlos (2023) found that firms situated near the threshold for inclusion on the 100 Best Corporate Citizen ranking were devalued by investors. To assess the generalizability of this surprising finding, we quasi-replicate and extend this finding by applying the same regression discontinuity design to the Fortune 500 ranking. We find corroborating evidence: firms near the bottom of the Fortune 500 receive lower external evaluations, not only from investors but also from industry peers. Our findings therefore quasi-replicate and extend Lewis and Carlos’ …

The Effect Of Bilateral Stimulation On Reducing Tantrum Behaviors In Autistic Children, Pui Kwan Chan May 2025

The Effect Of Bilateral Stimulation On Reducing Tantrum Behaviors In Autistic Children, Pui Kwan Chan

Theses and Dissertations

Autistic children often experience difficulty with emotional regulation, resulting in problem behaviors. This study investigates whether wearable vibrating devices, delivering bilateral stimulation (BLS), effectively reduce tantrum behaviors (i.e., aggression, property destruction, and verbal outbursts) in autistic children when used within an applied behavior analysis (ABA) setting. Three autistic children ages 7-10 participated in an A-B-A-B single-case experimental design conducted at a private autism clinic. Each child wore wireless BLS devices during their regular therapy sessions. A functional relation between the independent and dependent variable was observed. The overall combined average Tau-U score across all three participants was -0.41 with the …

Teaching Hygiene Skills To Teenagers With Developmental Disabilities Utilizing Friendship Circles, Nathaniel Medsker May 2025

Teaching Hygiene Skills To Teenagers With Developmental Disabilities Utilizing Friendship Circles, Nathaniel Medsker

Theses and Dissertations

High school students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often struggle with hygiene skills, including table manners. These difficulties are especially noticeable in peer tutoring settings. Peer tutors were utilized to increase the mouth wiping behavior of the students with IDD using peer influence through the friendship circles intervention. The participants included high school age students with IDD and accompanying peer tutors from their classroom. This was done in a social setting during lunch while the peer tutors modeled the appropriate mouth wiping behavior and complimented the students with IDD if they also participated in the mouth wiping behavior. The …

Benchtop-Scale High Temperature Molten Salt Electrochemical Reactors: Experimental Setup And Considerations, Haley Hoover, Ivy Wu, Oluwatamilore Olushina, Robert Bell, Kerry Rippy

Reviews, Analyses, and Instructional Studies in Electrochemistry (RAISE)

Molten salt electrochemical reduction (MSER) is the dominant production method for aluminum and titanium, and emerging technologies for producing other commodity metals with these highly electrified techniques have demonstrated promising results. However, the scale up of MSER of materials such as iron and silicon are limited by the challenging issues of materials compatibility and impurity control. This work describes an experimental MSER setup using both chloride and carbonate salts. This setup is designed for operations outside of a glovebox, which is practical from an industrial perspective, but creates unique challenges. This work serves as a practical guide to discuss some …

Making A Career Of Humanity: Implications Of Activism For Mental Health, Tate Henderson May 2025

Making A Career Of Humanity: Implications Of Activism For Mental Health, Tate Henderson

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Collective action in society, or activism, may increase psychological distress of participants and societies. Multiple studies regarding this relationship of activist behavior and mental health among marginalized or minority groups were reviewed. Certain variables might decrease or even reverse this effect of activism on mental health. Activist behavior that is more passionate and low-risk could improve psychological well-being. Social identity theory explains that increased identification with a group may improve mental health. Despite social identity, activist behavior of itself may also increase feelings of self-actualization, or the feelings of joy that come from personal growth. Such participation in activism may …

When Racist Jokes Go Unchecked: The Plight Of Asian Americans At The Hands Of Fellow Americans, Sedric Jacobsen May 2025

When Racist Jokes Go Unchecked: The Plight Of Asian Americans At The Hands Of Fellow Americans, Sedric Jacobsen

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Asian American people are often the target of unchecked racist jokes levelled by fellow Americans. Because of the model minority myth, racism towards Asian Americans has received less attention than that of other minority groups. Stereotypes furthered by racist jokes may seem innocuous, but they lead to mental, emotional, and potentially physical harm. Victim blaming is a common response to objections levied by Asian American people and this process leads to further psychological damage for the offended. The favored profile of an American is white, heterosexual, and male. Divergence from this model leads to prejudice, a response that is taught …

Differences In Diagnosis, Perception, And Recognition Among Children With Autism-Spectrum Disorder Belonging To Racial And Ethnic Minority Groups, Madelyne L. Syphus May 2025

Differences In Diagnosis, Perception, And Recognition Among Children With Autism-Spectrum Disorder Belonging To Racial And Ethnic Minority Groups, Madelyne L. Syphus

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Despite Autism-Sprectrum Disorder's (ASD's) relatively short existence as a diagnostic category, it has become one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders in the world. However, as awareness of ASD rises, those who do not fit the White-male diagnostic mold are often left out of conversations and experience disparities in diagnosis, recognition, and support for autism (Matthews, 2019). Many racial and ethnic minority groups suffer from professionals' lack of cultural awareness, and spontaneous judgments often result in lower rates of referral for and diagnosis of ASD (Begeer et al., 2008; Burke et al., 2015; Lopez, 2014). Differences in social norms among …

Jewish Contributions To The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Ashley Davis May 2025

Jewish Contributions To The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Ashley Davis

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

In his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela (1995) wrote, "I have foundJews to be more broad-minded than most Whites on the issues of race and politics, perhaps because they themselves have historically been victims of prejudice" (p. 91). The centuries of persecution faced by Jews engrained into J ewish teachings and culture a strong sense of morality and pushed them towards social and political activism. In South Africa, while White Jews were considered a part of the privileged minority, they faced discrimination and blatant anti-Semitism. Their privileged position as Whites and simultaneous ethnic status as 'lesser' than …

The Earth's Voice: The Social, Spiritual, And Secular Justifications For The Earth's Freedom Of Expression, Ashley Tzeting Pun Eveson May 2025

The Earth's Voice: The Social, Spiritual, And Secular Justifications For The Earth's Freedom Of Expression, Ashley Tzeting Pun Eveson

Theses and Dissertations

The Earth's legal right to freedom of speech remains largely unexplored within the broader legal movement for the rights of nature, which emerged in the 1970s. While environmental law increasingly recognizes nature's rights to exist and thrive, as illustrated by legal rights granted to various natural entities--like the Whanganui River or manoomin rice--the Earth's ability to communicate remains underdeveloped. This study employs legal research analysis to examine the philosophical reasoning behind how social, spiritual, and secular frameworks justify the Earth's right to freedom of speech and expression. It explores legal guardianship, scientific data, Indigenous knowledge, and spiritual stewardship as valid …

First-Generation College Students' Transition Experiences After A Bridge Program, Alison Irvine Mcmurry May 2025

First-Generation College Students' Transition Experiences After A Bridge Program, Alison Irvine Mcmurry

Theses and Dissertations

First-generation college students (FGCS) often encounter greater challenges than their peers. Universities offer transition programs like bridge programs, orientations, and advising, but service gaps contribute to FGCS difficulties. Bridge programs are often implemented for specific student groups that the university believes to be at-risk or more vulnerable than their peers. Targeted students are asked to come to campus early for additional training, education, and advising. The program is thought to bridge the gap between what they know and what they need to know to be college-ready and on-level with their peers. This case study examines the transition experiences of seven …

Structural Covariance And Episodic Memory: Sex Differences In Schizophrenia, Delaina Brooke Cimmino May 2025

Structural Covariance And Episodic Memory: Sex Differences In Schizophrenia, Delaina Brooke Cimmino

Theses and Dissertations

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a chronic brain disease characterized by patterns of positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms that interfere with daily functioning and persist throughout the lifespan. Clinical and cognitive symptoms differ between males and females with the disease, suggesting neurobiological abnormalities that vary on the basis of biological sex. The present study used high-dimensional brain mapping and network analysis procedures of cortical and limbic regions known to be involved in memory formation to investigate sex differences in brain correlates of episodic memory among patients with schizophrenia. This study analyzed multi-site archival data from 363 male (M) and 108 female (F) …

Additionally, the paper proposes underlying causes for these outcomes and potential interventions. These insights are supported by a diverse range of data, highlighting the urgent need to address this critical issue.

The Relationship Between Immigration And Academic Achievement In Hispanic Children, Jasmine Selph May 2025

The Relationship Between Immigration And Academic Achievement In Hispanic Children, Jasmine Selph

Family Perspectives

This literature review explores the relationship between immigration and academic achievement among Hispanic immigrant children in the United States, focusing on the impacts of immigration trauma and poverty. With immigration levels reaching record highs, Hispanic immigrant children face unique challenges that significantly influence their educational outcomes. Research highlights the profound effects of immigration trauma, including familial separation, violence, and insecurity, which manifest in physical, emotional, and cognitive difficulties that hinder academic performance. Additionally, poverty compounds these challenges, creating barriers to educational success through limited resources, language acquisition difficulties, and intergenerational cycles of disadvantage. The review also examines the roles of …

Leveraging Reduced Order Models And High-Fidelity Simulations For Efficient Multifidelity Uncertainty Quantification Of Thermal Systems, Jakob G. Bates May 2025

Leveraging Reduced Order Models And High-Fidelity Simulations For Efficient Multifidelity Uncertainty Quantification Of Thermal Systems, Jakob G. Bates

Theses and Dissertations

Simulation-led design is becoming an important part of thermal systems design. Simulations of thermal systems continue to improve in their fidelity, but this comes with an increased computational cost. Additionally, uncertainty in simulation inputs, such as thermophysical properties, leads to uncertainty in simulation outputs. For simulations to be used rigorously for simulation-led design, this uncertainty must be quantified. Performing uncertainty quantification on thermal simulations is made difficult by their many uncertain parameters and high computational cost. Multifidelity uncertainty quantification is a set of methods that reduce the cost of uncertainty quantification by leveraging high-fidelity, high-cost simulations with low-fidelity, low-cost simulations. …

Diagnostic Accuracy Of Nonword Repetition Tasks For Dual Language Learners And Monolingual Students, Elizabeth Hunt May 2025

Diagnostic Accuracy Of Nonword Repetition Tasks For Dual Language Learners And Monolingual Students, Elizabeth Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

Assessments for diagnosing language disorders (LD) can be biased for dual language learners (DLLs). Nonword repetition (NWR) tasks show potential as a less-biased language assessment measure for DLLs. This study explored the diagnostic accuracy of NWR tasks for diagnosing LD. There were 291 participants included in this study in first through fifth grades. Thirty-nine of the participants had LD and 86 of the participants were DLLs. Sixteen of the participants were DLLs and had LD. Monolingual participants were administered an English NWR task, and DLLs were administered both English and Spanish NWR tasks. These tasks were scored by percent phonemes …
