Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

A mountain brush vegetation typified by Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) and serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis) dominates the uplands of Mesa Verde National Park. There is evidence that this brush element is a successional stage that has been maintained by repeated natural fires in a large part of the Mesa Verde landscape. This study was conducted to determine the role of fire in the region's ecology, the nature of the climax pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) vegetation, and the major successional stages that lead to the climax condition.

The Reactivity And Selectivity Of The Reaction Of Sulfur Trioxide And Bromobenzene, Sullivan E. Blau

The sulfonation of bromobenzene with sulfur trioxide in liquid sulfur dioxide at -12 to -13° C. was studied to determine its relative reactivity. The relative rate constant ratio, kbenzene/kbromobenzene, was found to be 28.6 in a competitive reaction between benzene and bromobenzene. The isomer distribution was found to be 0.15 ± 0.02% for the meta, 0.91 ± 0.04% for the ortho and 98.93 ± 0.14% for the para isomers. The partial rate factors were calculated to be pf= 0.208, of= 0.0096 and mf = 0.00018. The relative rate data exhibited a distinctive behaviour previously noted in related systems, possibly due …

The purpose of this thesis is to review the history and discuss the present work being done in particle-gas flow, with application to air- augmentation of a particle-carrying, fuel-rich gas jet. A drawing of the model considered is shown in Figure 1, with the area of interest labeled. The thesis is intended as a thorough literature review and analysis.

Since the isolation of triiodothyronine (T3) by Pitt-Rivers and Gross (1953) several questions as to its role as a thyroid hormone arose. Does T3 have the same or different actions than that of thyroxine (T4 )? Is T3 an emergency hormone, since its synthesis relative to T4 is greatly increased during periods of low iodine intake and its response time is I/5th that of T4 (Ackerman and Arons, 1958)? Are there any interactions modifying their respective actions?

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites And Coccidia Of Cattle And Sheep In Utah Valley, Joseph Carl Fox

A survey of gastro-intestinal parasites in cattle and sheep in Utah Valley was conducted. Cattle in the valley were not seriously parasitized by helminths, whereas sheep usually had heavy helminth infections. Ten genera of helminths and 8 species of coccidia were identified in cattle in the valley, and 14 genera of helminths and 8 species of coccidia were identified in sheep. In conjunction with the survey, meteorologic studies were conducted May through September, 1909, to ascertain the effects which irrigation had upon micro-environments on grass pastures in relation to the development of free-Iiving stages of gastro-intestinal nematodes of ruminants. Asian history is increasingly recognized by experts as a necessary part of a high school student's world history experience. Asia is important for them to study because of its great intrinsic value and because of Asia's relationship with the United States in the future. To date, however, in Utah there are no separate Asian history courses being taught and few teachers include Asia as an important part of the world history course.

Schools in other parts of the nation have instituted practical Asian history courses and Utah can follow their example. Teachers should consider how much time can be devoted …
