The Theory Of Insular Biogeography And The Distribution Of Boreal Birds And Mammals, James H. Brown Mar 1978

The Theory Of Insular Biogeography And The Distribution Of Boreal Birds And Mammals, James H. Brown

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

The present paper compares the distribution of boreal birds and mammals among the isolated mountain ranges of the Great Basin and relates those patterns to the developing theory of insular biogeography. The results indicate that the distribution of permanent resident bird species represents an approximate equilibrium between contemporary rates of colonization and extinction. A shallow slope of the species-area curve (Z = 0.165), no significant reduction in numbers of species as a function of insular isolation (distance to nearest continent), and a strong dependence of species diversity on habitat diversity all suggest that immigration rates of boreal birds are sufficiently …

Phytogeographical Variation Within Juniper-Pinyon Woodlands Of The Great Basin, Neil E. West, Robin J. Tausch, Kenneth H. Rea, Paul T. Tueller Mar 1978

Phytogeographical Variation Within Juniper-Pinyon Woodlands Of The Great Basin, Neil E. West, Robin J. Tausch, Kenneth H. Rea, Paul T. Tueller

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

About 22 percent of the pigmy conifer woodlands of the United States occur within the Great Basin. Only a very few reports of these woodlands exist in the literature. Available reports are either of general descriptive nature or specific analysis of vegetation-environmental relationships on one mountain range. In order to better understand basin-wide synecological patterns, a cooperative study was carried out by personnel at Utah State University and the University of Nevada-Reno between 1972 and 1975. Vegetation, landform, geology, and soils data obtained from 463 systematically placed stands on a randomly chosen set of 66 mountain ranges have been used …

Applying Biogeographic Principles To Resource Management: A Case Study Evaluating Holdridge's Life Zone Model, James A. Macmahon, Thomas F. Wieboldt Mar 1978

Applying Biogeographic Principles To Resource Management: A Case Study Evaluating Holdridge's Life Zone Model, James A. Macmahon, Thomas F. Wieboldt

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Conservation schemes require some portioning of the world into a discrete number of subunits which might benefit from similar management practices. The Holdridge Life Zone scheme, proposed for such purposes previously, is applied to Utah as an initial test of its usefulness. A hypothetical life zone map was developed entirely on the basis of weather station data and data derived from these values. This predictive map compared favorably to data on patterns of vegetation, mammal, reptile, and amphibian distribution in Utah.

Distribution And Phylogeny Of Eriogonoideae (Polygonaceae), James L. Reveal Mar 1978

Distribution And Phylogeny Of Eriogonoideae (Polygonaceae), James L. Reveal

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Eriogonoideae is a subfamily of the knotweed family, Polygonaceae, endemic to the New World, and is composed of 14 genera and perhaps 320 species. It differs primarily from the other members of Polygonaceae in lacking well-defined sheathing stipules or ochrea. The species of Eriogonoideae vary from tiny, fragile annuals to herbaceous perennials, low subshrubs or shrubs to large and often arborescent shrubs. The seemingly most primitive extant genus of the subfamily is Eriogonum (247 species), which is widespread in central North America. A series of genera are closely related to Eriogonum, and probably have evolved directly from Eriogonum. These …

Alpine Phytogeography Across The Great Basin, W. D. Billings Mar 1978

Alpine Phytogeography Across The Great Basin, W. D. Billings

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Alpine vegetations and floras are compared in two transects across the Intermountain Region. The first extends from the Beartooth Mountains in the central Rocky Mountains to the Sierra Nevada some 1200 Km to the southwest. It includes six mountain ranges. The second transect crosses the Mohave Desert from Olancha Peak in the southern Sierra Nevada to Charleston Peak and thence to San Francisco Peaks in northern Arizona. The largest numbers of arctic-alpine species are in the Beartooth and Ruby mountains, indicating migrations of these species along the Rocky Mountain cordillera. The lowest numbers of arctic-alpine species are in the central …

Biography Of J. J. Von Grueningen, John Paul Von Grueningen

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

My father, Johann Jakob von Grueningen, who for thirty-four years served as pastor of the Reformed Church at Sauk City, Wisconsin, was born in Gstaad, Saanen Parish, Canton Bern, Switzerland, November 23, 1845, and died at Sauk City, May 23, 1911. From the time of his college days at St. Chrischona he used the older spelling of his family name. In explaining the variant spellings of the name, he writes in his memoirs:

Introductory Remarks, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This, the first nurrber of the fourteenth volume of the SAHS Newsletter, contains only two parts, the report of our 1977 annual meeting in Philadelphia and a biographical account of the life of J. J. von Grueningen, a 19th century Swiss immigrant to Wisconsin, by his son John Paul von Grueningen who was an active member and officer of the SAHS during its Madison years (1940s). I find this biographical sketch not only lively and colorful but moving at times and full of descriptive insights into the hardships of 19th century immigration.

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas Jan 1978

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

Sailing “The Old Ship Zion”: The Life Of George D. Watt, Ronald G. Watt Jan 1978

Sailing “The Old Ship Zion”: The Life Of George D. Watt, Ronald G. Watt

BYU Studies

George D. Watt was a prominent figure in nineteenth-century Utah, but because he apostatized from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he is now an obscure individual in Mormon history. Watt was baptized in England in 1837, and five years later, he and his wife arrived in Nauvoo. After returning to England to serve a mission, he arrived in Utah in 1851. His knowledge of shorthand was valuable for recording speeches from Church leaders, which were published in the Deseret News and Journal of Discourses, and was also useful for helping develop the Deseret Alphabet. He later …

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor Jan 1978

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

The primary function of this thesis was to determine, through the analysis of three randomly selected speeches, the speaking style of Heber C. Kimball. The selected speeches were presented in three different utah locations, and they covered a span of nine years (1856-65). All three speeches were presented to a Mormon audience and were religious in nature.

Seven elements of style have been used for the analysis of the three speeches. They are: accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness. It was determined that President Kimball's speaking style was weak in the areas of accuracy and clarity. In …

Danes Came To Central Wharton County In 1894 Bringing Church, Language, Culture, John L. Davis Jan 1978

Danes Came To Central Wharton County In 1894 Bringing Church, Language, Culture, John L. Davis

The Bridge

The grass reached to the bottoms of the wagons when the first group of Danes came to central Wharton County, Texas, in 1894. Land had been bought by J. C. Evers, an agent for the Danish Folk Society, to be resold to immigrants. The Dansk Folkesamfund was interested in founding an agricultural settlement in which the Danish culture and language, and the Lutheran church, might be preserved. Like many people who came to Texas, the settlers were looking for a new place to live - a place they could farm and raise their children .

Parental Control Of Children's Television: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Control And Family Home Evening, Marion Wixom Mccardell Jan 1978

Parental Control Of Children's Television: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Control And Family Home Evening, Marion Wixom Mccardell

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the relationship between a secular behavior—television control—and a religious one—Family Home Evening. The findings show that there is a relationship, with those having favorable attitudes toward Family Home Evening and those who hold casual FHE's being most inclined to exercise positive control over their children's television viewing.

Mormon Poor Relief: A Social Welfare Interlude, Betty L. Barton Jan 1978

Mormon Poor Relief: A Social Welfare Interlude, Betty L. Barton

BYU Studies

There has been considerable scholarship about the law of consecration in the early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and about the more recent Church welfare plan, but there has been relatively little written about Mormon welfare in the period roughly between 1850 and 1930. Many of the early pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley faced starvation, so President Brigham Young created public works projects in order to give people jobs, acting under the belief that it is better to help people help themselves than to simply give them handouts. Unlike much of American society of …

The Mormon Heritage Of Vardis Fisher, Leonard J. Arrington, Jon Haupt Jan 1978

The Mormon Heritage Of Vardis Fisher, Leonard J. Arrington, Jon Haupt

BYU Studies

Twentieth-century novelist Vardis Fisher is often regarded as a Mormon apostate and critic, most notably for his 1939 book Children of God. However, Fisher was never excommunicated from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and despite his skeptical and sometimes critical portrayals of Mormonism, religion played an important role in his lifestyle and writings. Having studied the Bible as a youth, he had a preoccupation with the moral earnestness of the Judeo-Christian tradition. He also took a psychological approach to Mormonism in many of his novels, particularly regarding issues of religion and sexuality. Fisher had a Mormon …
