Phlox Longifolia Nutt. (Polemoniaceae) Complex Of North America, Frederick J. Peabody Mar 1979

Phlox Longifolia Nutt. (Polemoniaceae) Complex Of North America, Frederick J. Peabody

Great Basin Naturalist

Over 1,000 herbarium specimens including 24 type specimens were examined in an attempt to achieve a clearer understanding of the Phlox longifolia complex. Four variables were measured for each specimen and the data were statistically analyzed by discriminant analysis. Using a previously published system of classification for the complex, approximately 73 percent of the measured variation among the specimens was accounted for by that system. The clustering patterns produced in this first analysis indicated that a more conservative approach would be advisable. The formulation and subsequent application of a modified system produced a grouping of specimens that accounted for 95 …

Part of a series of Japanese biographical dictionaries which was initiated with Biographical Dictionary of Japanese Literature in 1976, this compilation focusses on individuals who figured prominently in Japanese political, economic, and social life. In addition to the biographies, material in this volume includes portraits, appendices of genealogical tables, organizational charts of political institutions, and a glossary of institutions and terms. Maps showing past and present administrative divisions of Japan are also included. A bibliography of Japanese-language sources is given, arranged in an appendix under the names of the biographees. A Summary Of Replies To The Questionnaire On The Future Of The Swiss American Historical Society, Alice H. Finckh

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In the early summer of 1978 Marianne Burkhard, of the University of Illinois, circulated a questionnaire among the members of the Swiss American Historical Society designed to probe their opinions regarding the future course of the Society. The varied responses she received run the gamut of strong support for new directions to emphatic warnings against becoming involved in expensive programs or diluting the purpose and goals of the Society. Dr. Burkhard asked me to try to summarize the responses. The first part of this report summarizes and tabulates, so far as possible; the second part condenses individual comments written on …

Representative Mormon Short Stories 1890 To 1940: Evolution Of Sentimentalism Toward Realism, Alice Gardner Jan 1979

Representative Mormon Short Stories 1890 To 1940: Evolution Of Sentimentalism Toward Realism, Alice Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Previously, no one has analyzed the short stories of Mormon periodicals from their inception in the late nineteenth century until 1940. The body of this study attempts to do so and has two main aims.

First, it evaluates the literary development of largely sentimental stories written for Mormon youth. Sentimentality in fiction was an extreme form of romanticism which flourished in America throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. As other forms of realistic writing became more acceptable in the nation, Mormon writers gradually accommodated their literary styles to conform with national trends. They retained a significant amount …

A Home Teacher's Training Manual, Daniel M. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of a training program for L.D.S. priesthood home teachers.

A twelve week workshop was written and field tested in the Fullerton California Stake. The evaluation pointed out the need for a structured and ongoing program with emphasis on the fostering of interpersonal communication and relationship skills among individual priesthood home teachers. The outcome of this project was the development of a functional product entitled "A Home Teacher's Training Manual."

A Multi-Valued Attitudinal Study Of Obscenity And Freedom Of Expression, Allen W. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine whether religiosity is a determining factor in public reaction to obscenity issues.

A sample population of 452 residents of the community of Idaho Falls, Idaho was selected using a technique based on a list of random numbers in October, 1979. Path analysis, Chi-square analysis and Spearman's correlation were used to measure the results.

The study found there is a significant relationship between religiosity and behavior intention toward obscenity issues. The affective component of the attitude organization functions somewhat as a mediating variable. There were also findings that members of the Church of Jesus Christ …
