Toward An Understanding Of The Heart -- A Scriptural And Psychological Perspective, Paul F. Cook Oct 1982

Toward An Understanding Of The Heart -- A Scriptural And Psychological Perspective, Paul F. Cook

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The word heart was used by the Hebrews and Greeks as an equivalent of our modern words of mind, emotion, will and personality. The Lord who revealed his ideas about the heart anciently has continued to use this word in modern revelations, thus raising the possibility that it is still useful to us. This paper defines heart, examines seven ways a treasure is established in the heart, and draws implications for a theory of personality and psychotherapy. Recommendations for research are also included.
(Presented at the AMCAP Convention 1 October 1982.)

That They Might Not Suffer: The Gift Of Atonement, Eugene England

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This sermon was one of a series given in the first part of 1966 to introduce Mormonism to friends of L.D.S. students at Stanford University and was published in the Autumn 1967 issue of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought. Eugene England was then an editor of Dialogue, a teaching assistant in the departments of both English and Religious Studies at Stanford, and a member of the Stanford Ward Bishopric.

Buccal Floor Of Reptiles, A Summary, Wilmer W. Tanner, David F. Avery Sep 1982

Buccal Floor Of Reptiles, A Summary, Wilmer W. Tanner, David F. Avery

Great Basin Naturalist

A general survey of the information presently available on the osteology and myology of the hyobranchial apparatus. Included in the survey are examples of the hyobranchial skeleton of the major groups of reptiles, including the Chelonia, Crocodilia, Rhynchocephalia, and Squamata. The myology treats the muscles directly associated with the hyoid as well as those associated with the functioning of the apparatus, but not arising or inserted directly on or from the hyoid. The innervation of the hyobranchial apparatus is reviewed and briefly discussed based on the information available in a few major studies. An attempt is made to cite all …

Phalacropsis Dispar (Coleoptera: Phalacridae), An Element In The Natural Control Of Native Pine Stem Rust Fungi In The Western United States, David L. Nelson Sep 1982

Phalacropsis Dispar (Coleoptera: Phalacridae), An Element In The Natural Control Of Native Pine Stem Rust Fungi In The Western United States, David L. Nelson

Great Basin Naturalist

Larvae of the phalacrid beetle Phalacropsis dispar (LeConte) consumed aeciospores and the underlying sporogenous mycelium, thereby destroying the aecia of all native western pine stem rust fungi studied. Aecia of the introduced white pine blister rust fungus (Cronartium ribicola) were not found to be infested by the beetle. A close, if not obligate, biosis of the beetle apparently exists with the native rust fungi, and their geographic distributions closely coincide. Laboratory tests and field observations indicate that the beetle completes its life cycle in 30 to 40 days and apparently overwinters as an adult. Quantitative data on aeciospore …

The Challenge Of Socialist Thought, Noel B. Reynolds Sep 1982

The Challenge Of Socialist Thought, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

This presentation points to socialists’ mistaken assumptions of a malleable and perfectible human nature as an insuperable reason for the inevitable failure of socialist systems. It also points to socialist and liberal dependence on declarations of human rights as ineffective protections for human freedom—protections which can only be maintained in constitutionalist systems with deeper structural safeguards against tyranny.

Food Consumption An Distribution: An Overview, Dyaa Abdou, B. Gardner Delworth Aug 1982

Food Consumption An Distribution: An Overview, Dyaa Abdou, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

Nearly everyone concedes that Egypt is faced with a serious food problem. The Egyptian agricultural sector is unable to feed the increasing and more affluent population. In 1980, agricultural output was estimated to be increasing by about 2.0 percent annually, whereas the country's annual population growth rate was estimated at about 2.3 percent. If the difference in these growth rates continues, Egypt must increase imports each year just to maintain per capita consumption at the present level [3].

Economic Implications Of The Policy For Pricing And Allocating Rice In Egypt, Sonia Mohamed Ali, B. Gardner Delworth Jul 1982

Economic Implications Of The Policy For Pricing And Allocating Rice In Egypt, Sonia Mohamed Ali, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

Rice is both heavily subsidized and rationed in Egypt. This policy has significant distributive effects and especially benefits low income consumers in both urban and rural areas of the country. In addition, the policy has important allocative effects in shifting scarce resources to inefficient uses. This paper attempts to measure the economic inefficiency associated with this policy in order that the policy makers may judge better whether or not the distributive benefits are worth the efficiency costs.
