The Impact Of The Mormon Migration On The Community Of Kirtland, Ohio, 1830-1839, Mark R. Grandstaff

Theses and Dissertations

In the early decades of the nineteenth-century, an era of cultural change and disorientation, many turned to revivals to displace insecure emotionalism and to insure themselves of a place in the emerging society. Others, such as the Mormons sought an all encompassing plan that would dispel confusion and restore order to a decadent society. This search led some Mormons to follow their Prophet to Kirtland, Ohio. Once in Kirtland, various sociological conflicts developed which affected how the citizens of Kirtland would perceive their Mormon neighbors. Tantamount to these conflicts was the rapidly increasing Mormon population which triggered a corresponding rise …

Iv. Intelligence Operations In Switzerland During The Second World War, Heinz K. Meier Feb 1984

Iv. Intelligence Operations In Switzerland During The Second World War, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The topic of my paper is involved and multifaceted. It deals with well-known organizations and names such as the Rote Kapelle, Dulles and the OSS, Schellenberg, and the Abwehr, but it concentrates on the role that Switzerland played in the field of intelligence during World War II. Due to the volume of materials on almost every aspect of my topic it will not be possible to present more than an overview of the main themes and a glimpse at the issues that have challenged historians over the last forty years.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Under this heading I would like to bring together two different emphases in the study of industrialization that too often have remained separate: (a) the historical measurement of economic growth, undertaken by economic historians who have looked at industrial output and similar indicators in order to gauge a country's economic performance; and (b) the study of social policy measures such as workers' protection and social insurance, to which social and political historians have paid major attention in assessing a nation's reaction to the ups and downs of economic growth in the course of industrialization.

The Twentieth Annual Business Meeting Of The Swiss American Historical Society: President's Report, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In the past year, the SAHS has carried out a number of activities. The constant, and a mainstay, is the Newsletter edited by Professors Leo Schelbert and Heinz K. Meier. I would like to thank both of them for all their painstaking work they devote to this publication that is the vital link for the members of our society. I also wish to express special thanks to Dean Meier for providing the services for producing and mailing the Newsletter, and I would like to ask him to convey our appreciation to the appropriate officials at Old Dominion University for …
