Cultural Implications Of The Sino-Soviet Conflict, Paul V. Hyer Apr 1966

Cultural Implications Of The Sino-Soviet Conflict, Paul V. Hyer

BYU Studies

The Sino-Soviet conflict is based as much in culture as it is in border disputes or ideological approaches to communism. The Chinese have lived for much of their collective past in isolation from the world and with a strong sense of ethnocentricity. China’s ancient traditions continue to shape the modern country’s attitudes and policies. If the United States wants to better understand China, it must begin by strengthening its understanding of the rich Chinese culture.

The authors reach into the past, examining the political atmospheres in each country at the time China’s and the Soviet Union’s leaders came of age. By doing so, they illustrating how China’s leaders developed an extremely xenophobic view of the world and why the Soviets did not. The authors also explain why the Soviets viewed their Chinese …

Student, and the White …

A Study Of Moral Development In Mormon Culture, Steve Foster Gilliland Jan 1966

A Study Of Moral Development In Mormon Culture, Steve Foster Gilliland

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have indicated that the moral development of the child may follow a "developmental" process. That is, the child progresses through an invariant series of stages, each characterized by certain modes of thought. As the child passes from one stage to another, he integrates the old stage into the new one. Kohlberg proposed a hierarchy of six stages through which the child would progress on his way to moral maturity. His hypothesis has been supported by empirical evidence.

Research findings have indicated that the Mormon culture appeared to be different in values and moral behavior than other United States …

A Proposal For A Section Of An Lds Church History Textbook For High School Students Containing The History Of The Church From 1898 To 1951, Arthur R. Bassett

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been organized for over one hundred and thirty-six years. The history of nearly a century of that time--1866 to the present--has not been adequately dealt with in any single book currently available for use on the high school level as an L. D. S. seminary text. The objective of this field project was to produce textual materials covering a fifty-three year portion of this period--the portion 1898-1951.

Church history material relative to this period was gathered and organized in a biographical framework centering in the lives and administration of the four …

His career began with highly naturalistic novels, but by the end of his life, he was writing spiritual or metaphysical works. Although one of the best known Swiss participating in the Civil War, he is not listed among the subjects of the book Prominent Americans of Swiss Origin. This probably was no oversight, for he was and is a controversial figure.

Hermann Hesse And The Notion Of The Ful Entity Of Man In The Literature Of Our Century, Albert Bettex

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In 1929, four years before Hitler came to power in Germany, C.G. Jung published an essay on "Women in Europe". In this essay the Swiss psychologist , no doubt a shrewd observer, also deals with a few general aspects of the human situation of that time. He discovers tendencies in the minds of many of his contemporaries . First "a growing disgust at one sided attitudes which do not make sense" . He was thinking, among other things, of the increclible chaos of doubtful, dogmatic philosophies of the late 1920's, many of which were offered as promises of salvation to …

The author suggests that the Chinese theory of Wu-hsing, or The Five Elements, combined with the Yin-Yang theory, has had as great an influence on Eastern cultures as Greco-Roman culture has had upon the West. The theory of the Five Elements-fire, earth, metal, water, and wood-has impacted everything from children's games to the days of the week to the naming of babies throughout Asia. Perhaps the greatest influence has been on politics and theories of history.

The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy

The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.

Folklore stories of divine intervention include the lore of divine aid given in time of great need, divine …
