Confession In A Light-Wrapped Room, Carla Thomas Jan 1984

Confession In A Light-Wrapped Room, Carla Thomas

Inscape

I began to lose confidence in Dr. Swain when I entered his waiting room for the first time and found it was painted pink. In all the years it must have taken him to finish his Ph.D. in psychology, you'd think he'd have learned something about the psychology of color. Pink is for little girls' rooms, for powder rooms, for ladies' rooms. Pink is the color fathers want to wrap their baby girls in.

The Image Of The Child In The English Mystery Cycles, Marilyn Sutton Jan 1984

The Image Of The Child In The English Mystery Cycles, Marilyn Sutton

Quidditas

Recent studies in family history have largely reaffirmed the commonplace that, prior to the Renaissance, children were seldom seen and rarely heard. Philippe Ariès and Lawrence Stone, for their parts, have traced the evolution of the concepts of childhood, privacy, and the conjugal family; the point of origin for each, they fix in the Renaissance. But encyclopedic as Ariès and Stone have been in researching their respective theories of "undiscovered childhood" and "conscious limitation of affection", they, nevertheless, have slighted the testimony of the popular literature of the English Middle Ages, an oversight that has led them to establish arbitrary …

A Place Called Dana The Centennial History Of Trinity Seminary And Dana College 1884-1984, Gail Q. Unruh, Reviewer, Peter L. Petersen Jan 1984

A Place Called Dana The Centennial History Of Trinity Seminary And Dana College 1884-1984, Gail Q. Unruh, Reviewer, Peter L. Petersen

The Bridge

Blair, Nebraska, located some twenty miles north of Omaha, is the home of Dana College and Trinity Seminary. Together, these companion institutions formed one of the focal points of Danish immigrant efforts to establish themselves in their new homeland and to preserve elements of their cultural heritage. In the opening pages of his A Place Called Dana, Peter L. Petersen declares his desire to accomplish four interrelated goals: to write a history of the two associated institutions of Dana College and Trinity Seminary; to illuminate some of the accomplishments of Danish-Americans; to highlight the significant contribution to higher education of …

Two Agricultural Economists Look At Rural Sociology, B. Delworth Gardner, Carole Frank Nuckton Jan 1984

Two Agricultural Economists Look At Rural Sociology, B. Delworth Gardner, Carole Frank Nuckton

Faculty Publications

At the invitation of the editor, we shall attempt to describe our perceptions as agricultural economists of what is known to us as rural sociology. We should say right off that we are complimented that this invitation has been extended to us. We think that a comparison of our two disciplines has been useful to us, if only to clarify our thinking about our own. We emphasize that our perceptions are based on limited contact, and we have made no systematic study of your discipline. Even to attempt the critique and analysis of the kind requested of us presumes an …

A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen Jan 1984

A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen

Theses and Dissertations

American Indians in Mormon arts suffer from the imposition of the white man's traditional ideas, images and stereotypes. An examination of Mormon literature since 1941, Mormon hymns and music, and Mormon visual arts reveals little consideration of Native American values: tribal affiliation, significance of place and community, myth and ritual. While the mainstream of American art has incorporated Native American values into Indian representations, and even found a place for Native American artists, Mormon arts adhere to historical misinterpretations, despite a number of fine Mormon Native American artists.

Strengthening The Family: A Guide For Lds Single Parent Mothers, Jane C. Beuhring

Theses and Dissertations

Raising a family as a single parent is difficult at best. As an LDS single parent, these difficulties take on a unique challenge. The purpose of this project is to offer specific, LDS related guidelines to assist the LDS single parent mother in strengthening her family and thus acquiring the skills needed in handling the unique challenge of raising a family in a gospel oriented society. A variety of resources were used to include theorists, practicioners, scriptures, and personal experiences. Examples and case studies demonstrate the integration of gospel principles and family practices as they relate to LDS single parent …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Current Status Of Paid Religious Broadcasting On National Television, Wayne R. Bills Jan 1984

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Current Status Of Paid Religious Broadcasting On National Television, Wayne R. Bills

Theses and Dissertations

In examining the use of paid television by various evangelical organizations (the "Electronic Church") as contrasted with its use by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), several important differences were discovered. First, the programs of the electronic church are usually designed much like a normal Sunday service with a "preacher" and "congregation" (the T.V. viewers). The LDS approach has been to communicate religious principles through the use of a story. Their productions are attractive to a large audience because they often feature a well-known television or motion picture celebrity, and are aired during prime-time viewing hours.

The …

Beyond Teaching Correct Principles (Some Thoughts On Mormon Youth And The Development Of Free Agency), Grant Owen Jan 1984

Beyond Teaching Correct Principles (Some Thoughts On Mormon Youth And The Development Of Free Agency), Grant Owen

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

It is alleged that families that have not made adequate preparation for coping with the developing agency of their teenage children seek to contain that growth. As in other religious families under similar stress, LDS parents may attempt to enhance their power and credibility by aligning their authority with that of the church. The natural movement of the adolescent away from parental control may thus be complicated and result in the unnecessary disruption of church ties as well as familial bonds by the confused and frustrated youth. Measures intended to foster parental confidence and adolscent competence are discussed.

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin Jan 1984

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin

The Bridge

In a world in flux, the historian must strike a balance between change and tradition. The historian of American immigration and culture particularly sits poised on the knife's edge, seeking universal categories of analysis and understanding while immersing himself in a loving study of distinct peoples, places, and ways of life in disarray. He is the boomer engineer committed to democracy and equality, progress and growth, mobility and technology, science and medicine, individualism and freedom. But he is also the artist, priest, and guardian of culture, the admirer of fragile arts and crafts and tastes perfected over generations, of customs, …

Level Of Marital Adjustment And Spiritual Well-Being Among Latter-Day Saints, Robert W. Reynolds Jan 1984

Level Of Marital Adjustment And Spiritual Well-Being Among Latter-Day Saints, Robert W. Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations

This research will focus specifically on SWB [spiritual well being] among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). By virtue of his membership in this denomination, the researcher is more familiar with the theology, religious life and traditions of the LDS than those of any other denomination. Latter-day Saint theology has been well defined, and because of a fundamental belief in the prophetic ability of a single leader of the church, the doctrine and practices of the Latter-day Saints are consistent throughout the United States and the world.

A Comparison Of Spanish Language Proficiency As Related To Location And Length Of Stay In A Foreign Language Environment, Karen Minnette Dawson Mckenna Jan 1984

A Comparison Of Spanish Language Proficiency As Related To Location And Length Of Stay In A Foreign Language Environment, Karen Minnette Dawson Mckenna

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship of Spanish language proficiency as related to location and length of stay in a foreign language environment. The participants took a Spanish diagnostic test that measures Spanish proficiency through grammar principles and then answered a questionnaire concerning their language learning experiences, location and length of stay in a Spanish language environment.
It was found that Spanish language proficiency increased with longer lengths of stay in the Spanish language environment. No conclusive data were found to support the hypothesis that those in one Spanish-speaking environment attain a higher language proficiency than those in another Spanish-speaking area. …

The Incidence Of Obesity In Lds College Women: The Effect Of Selected Physical Socio-Environmental Variables On Total Percent Body Fat In Two Populations Of Lds Women, Carrie Tanner Summers Jan 1984

The Incidence Of Obesity In Lds College Women: The Effect Of Selected Physical Socio-Environmental Variables On Total Percent Body Fat In Two Populations Of Lds Women, Carrie Tanner Summers

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of selected physical socio-environmental variables on total percent body fat. The sample population consisted of single, LDS, white women attending Brigham Young University (BYU) and California State University at Fullerton (CSUF). Significant data as well as trends that appeared were included in this paper.

From the data collected, it was concluded that the sample populations at BYU and CSUF were the same. The incidence of obesity was determined only among individuals attending both universities. The entire sample population mean was 22.19 percent. This percentage did not meet the obesity criteria. …
