Perestroika, Phase Iii: Can The Ussr Learn From The Only Successful Reform?, Phillip J. Bryson Jun 1991

Perestroika, Phase Iii: Can The Ussr Learn From The Only Successful Reform?, Phillip J. Bryson

Faculty Publications

In Phase I of Mikhail Gorbachev's tenure as chief director of the soviet economic strategy, the General Secretary seemed content to continue an approach his predecessors had referred to as plan "perfecting" (sovershenstvovanie). This approach which called merely for the development and implementation of modest improvements in the planning mechanism. It was the chosen alternative to economic reform, the approach which had been peremptorily rejected with the closing of the Kosygin reforms at the end of the 1960s.

The Psychological Foundations Of The Mormon Client In Counseling And Psychotherapy, Mark Edward Koltko

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This paper comprises an analysis of selected psychotherapeutically relevant aspects of Mormonism, the religion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Consideration is given to beliefs about religion, one's relationship to God, marriage and sexuality, grace and works, and personal inspiration, and the relevance of these beliefs for counseling and psychotherapy with Latter-day Saint clients. In addition, this paper considers the therapeutic relevance of religious history, demographics, community structure and policy, life style, and characteristic gender issues arising from the social structure.

Religious Orientation Among Mormons, Michael E. Nielsen Apr 1991

Religious Orientation Among Mormons, Michael E. Nielsen

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Richard Poll's Iron Rod-Liahona view of LDS religious orientation is addressed in a study of Utah and Illinois Mormons. Measures are developed, and discrete and continous scaling is examined. Of the demographic variables considered, only age influenced participants' Iron Rod-Liahona score. The measures are compared to the views of religious orientation held by Allport and Batson. Significant correlations exist between the Iron Rod- Liahona orientations and most of the traditionally used measures, with Allport's Extrinsic orientation being an exception.

Tinkling Cymbals And Sounding Brass: The Art Of Telling Tales About Joseph Smith And Brigham Young, Hugh Nibley Jan 1991

Tinkling Cymbals And Sounding Brass: The Art Of Telling Tales About Joseph Smith And Brigham Young, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1). Since then, the terms “tinkling cymbals” and “sounding brass” have often been used to signify words of emptiness and confusion – describing perfectly most writings critical of the Latter-day Saints. Trained in history and interested in classical rhetoric, Hugh Nibley brings a broad perspective to his study of anti-Mormon writings.

Danish Artists Of The American West: Olaf Seltzer And Olaf Wieghorst, Cecilia Ibsen Larsen Jan 1991

Danish Artists Of The American West: Olaf Seltzer And Olaf Wieghorst, Cecilia Ibsen Larsen

The Bridge

If you mix cowboys, Indians, Danes and paint, you come up with two remarkable artists, Olaf Seltzer and Olaf Wieghorst. These two men came to America from Denmark and, after living and working here for numbers of years, produced art that is as American as American art can get. Their subject was the Old West. Although their trips were 27 years apart, both Seltzer and Wieghorst came to America in their teens. Both worked at other occupations until they had developed the skills necessary to survive as artists. Both chose the West as their subject matter; both were named Olaf; …

Religious Devoutness In College Students: Relations With Emotional Support Adjustment And Psychological Separation From Parents, P. Scott Richards Jan 1991

Religious Devoutness In College Students: Relations With Emotional Support Adjustment And Psychological Separation From Parents, P. Scott Richards

Faculty Publications

The relation between religious orientation and mental health was investigated. Measures of religious orientation and devoutness, depression, shame and guilt, existential well-being, and psychological separation from parents were administered to 268 undergraduate students. Four groups were formed. Results indicated that religiously devout intrinsic and proreligious Ss did not differ from less devout extrinsic and nontraditionally religious students in depression, shame, and existential well-being. Intrinsic and proreligious Ss scored higher on guilt proneness and religious well-being and lower on functional, attitudinal, and emotional separation from parents than did nontraditionally religious Ss. Ellis's (1980) religiosity-em otional-disturbance hypothesis was not supported. Some insight …

Family Stress And The Role Of The Mormon Bishop's Wife, Marguerite Irene Adams Jan 1991

Family Stress And The Role Of The Mormon Bishop's Wife, Marguerite Irene Adams

Theses and Dissertations

A national survey of bishops' wives was conducted to determine whether Reuben Hill's "Roller Coaster" model of family stress following a stressor event should be modified to include a honeymoon period when the precipitating event is viewed positively by the family. The honeymoon period was expected to be within the first year, and too few respondents were in their first year to give statistically significant evidence of such a pattern. Several measures did give non-significant evidence of a honeymoon phase, though.

Other factors found to have an important effect on the stressfulness of the position of bishop's wife were: age …
