The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page Feb 1999

The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Although Aaron Jastrow later perishes in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, Nathalie owes her own escape from the same camp and her eventual rescue by the Americans at Weimar, Germany in April, …

Book Review: The Wheel Of Life: A Memoir Of Living And Dying, Nicole Butz Feb 1999

Book Review: The Wheel Of Life: A Memoir Of Living And Dying, Nicole Butz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is a remarkable, if somewhat unusual, woman. Although her views remain highly controversial and have received much criticism, it is difficult to deny the impact that she and her work have had on contemporary attitudes towards death and on the treatment of the dying and the terminally ill. Kübler-Ross first achieved fame in 1969 with the publication of On Death and Dying. The book is now considered a classic text on the subject and is required reading in many medical and nursing schools, theological seminaries, and university psychology and sociology courses. In the thirty years since its …

The History Of An Idea: The Scene On Stela 5 From Izapa, Mexico, As A Representation Of Lehi's Vision Of The Tree Of Life, Stewart W. Brewer Jan 1999

The History Of An Idea: The Scene On Stela 5 From Izapa, Mexico, As A Representation Of Lehi's Vision Of The Tree Of Life, Stewart W. Brewer

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Stela 5, a large stone monument discovered in 1941 in Izapa, Mexico, was identified a decade later by M. Wells Jakeman as a bas-relief of Lehi’s vision of the tree of life. Scholars and laymen alike have both accepted and scoffed at this theory. This article provides a historical sketch of reactions to this claim and discusses some of the implications of accepting or rejecting Jakeman’s theory. Jakeman was the first to publish an LDS interpretation of Stela 5; later V. Garth Norman proposed a different interpretation based on a series of high-quality photographs of the monument. Suzanne Miles, a …

Finding Biblical Hebrew And Other Ancient Literary Forms In The Book Of Mormon, Hugh W. Pinnock Jan 1999

Finding Biblical Hebrew And Other Ancient Literary Forms In The Book Of Mormon, Hugh W. Pinnock

Maxwell Institute Publications

One important and fruitful area of Book of Mormon studies has focused on ancient Hebrew literary forms present in the text. After years of studying these fascinating forms, Hugh W. Pinnock offers his perspective on their beauty, function, and background. By design this book offers a basic working knowledge of only some of the ancient literary forms identified in the Book of Mormon. Together they represent a significant percentage of the types of ancient forms drawn upon by the Nephite prophets.

The author explains that knowledge of ancient Hebrew writing forms and Jewish poetry is incomplete even today, and much …

Inventing The Wicked Women Of Tudor England: Alice More, Anne Boleyn, And Anne Stanhope, Retha M. Warnicke Jan 1999

Inventing The Wicked Women Of Tudor England: Alice More, Anne Boleyn, And Anne Stanhope, Retha M. Warnicke

Quidditas

In Tudor histories, perhaps more than in other histories, writers have failed to distinguish, as Judith Shapiro has pointed out with reference to anthropological literature, "consistently between the sex bias emanating from the observer and the sex bias characteristic of the community under study.” The sex and gender bias of early modern society was, of course, pervasive and ubiquitous. Prescriptive works instructed women to confine their activities to domestic and family matters. Even as litigators in the courts of law, they were disadvantaged. Generally defining women as the inferior sex, their male contemporaries judged women’s worth by their chastity, silence, …
