The Book Of Mormon And Dialogic Revelation, Terryl L. Givens Jul 2001

The Book Of Mormon And Dialogic Revelation, Terryl L. Givens

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This article has been adapted from the author’s book By the Hand of Mormon: The American Scripture That Launched a New World Religion. The author discusses three common understandings of the term revelation: (1) revelation as doctrine, (2) revelation as history, and (3) revelation as inner experience. He suggests that the Book of Mormon introduces a fourth type: revelation as dialogue. This form of revelation allows individuals to have direct contact with God, rather than only through the scriptures, and can be applied to our lives just as it was to the lives of those living in Book …

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch Jul 2001

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch

BYU Studies

During the festive weeks before Christmas feasts, everybody loves to hate Scrooge. That's how it always was in the household of my childhood. On the first Sunday afternoon of December, my father would gather the children in the family room and ceremonially produce our green hardbound edition of A Christmas Carol. He worked his way through the five staves of the Carol during that afternoon and the Sunday afternoons that followed, in order to complete the reading before Christmas Day. Although the younger children would fidget and the older children would complain, we needed the annual retelling of the …

A Joseph Smith For The Twenty-First Century, Richard Lyman Bushman Jul 2001

A Joseph Smith For The Twenty-First Century, Richard Lyman Bushman

BYU Studies

Since Henry Caswall published The Prophet of the Nineteenth Century in 1843, a year before Joseph Smith's death, nineteen book-length biographies of the Prophet have appeared in print, more than half of them since 1940. They differ wildly in tone and perspective, as might be imagined. Several are still worth considering by serious students of Joseph Smith's life. Among the more notable, I. Woodbridge Riley's The Founder of Mormonism is severely critical but ingenious and original, the first biography to attempt a scientific explanation of Joseph Smith's revelations. Fawn Brodie's No Man Knows My History is a magnificent piece of …

Parenting Stress In Families With Children With Disabilities, Timothy B. Smith, Matthew N. I. Oliver, Mark S. Innocenti May 2001

Parenting Stress In Families With Children With Disabilities, Timothy B. Smith, Matthew N. I. Oliver, Mark S. Innocenti

Faculty Publications

Parenting stress is an important variable to consider in families with children with disabilities. This study evaluated 880 such families, using measures of child and family functioning. Results suggest that factors such as income, time available for interaction with the child, and social support predict parenting stress much better than do aspects of child functioning.

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Managing Dual Relationships, Marleen S. Williams Apr 2001

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Managing Dual Relationships, Marleen S. Williams

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Because LDS people often seek psychological help from LDS counselors, the potential for ethical dilemmas around dual relationships is high. The article reviews current professional literature concerning ethical reponses to dual relationships in the context of LDS culture and practices. Recommendations are made for ethical decision making. Steps in the decision-making process are outlined.

A Comparison Of Body Image Satisfaction Among Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint College-Age Students, Annmarie Carroll, Diane L. Spangler Apr 2001

A Comparison Of Body Image Satisfaction Among Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint College-Age Students, Annmarie Carroll, Diane L. Spangler

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Several sociocultural factors have been shown to impact body image. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the sociocultural variable of religion, specifically represented by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint (LDS) religion, affects body image in college-age students. Questionnaires assessing body image and beliefs about appearance were administered to male and female LDS and non-LDS students at Brigham Young University, University of Utah, Boston University, and California State University at Fullerton. Results indicated that male students, regardless of religion, were more satisfied with their bodies than their female counterparts. Within-gender comparisions inicated the LDS …

The Comparability Of Ancient And Modern Civilizations, John K. Hord Apr 2001

The Comparability Of Ancient And Modern Civilizations, John K. Hord

Comparative Civilizations Review

One of the great questions in the comparative study of civilizations has been, how many civilizations are truly comparable? Are there factors which separate and differentiate civilizations so thoroughly that no comparison between them can be useful? This paper will address the problem of "the" difference between ancient and recent civilizations. It will be proposed that the major differences exist on a range of development rather than as some kind of unbridgeable gulf, and will suggest the possibility of a format for studying this range of development mathematically.

Of Men And Mantles: Kierkegaard On The Difference Between A Genius And An Apostle, John S. Tanner Apr 2001

Of Men And Mantles: Kierkegaard On The Difference Between A Genius And An Apostle, John S. Tanner

BYU Studies

I was once asked to introduce Elder Neal A. Maxwell to a group of BYU English majors. This assignment caused me some concern. I feared that my audience might be inclined to revere Elder Maxwell for the wrong reasons, or at least for secondary reasons—namely, for his considerable gifts as a writer rather than for his apostolic authority. So rather than rehearse Elder Maxwell's résumé, I decided to frame my introduction with insights borrowed from a remarkable essay by Søren Kierkeaard entitled "The Difference between a Genius and an Apostle." In it, Kierkegaard emphasizes that human genius does not confer …

Book Review: Ambiguous Loss. Learning To Live With Unresolved Grief., Virginia B. Schelbert Feb 2001

Book Review: Ambiguous Loss. Learning To Live With Unresolved Grief., Virginia B. Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The author, Professor of Family Social Services at the University of Minnesota, is the daughter of the late Paul and of Verena Magdalena Grossenbacher, born Elmer. Her father was a native of Burgdorf, Canton Bern, and had been a main promoter of New Glarus' Swiss American institutions. 3 Thus Dr. Boss begins her book with a personal narrative which describes growing up with the effects of the immigrant experience on family members. Her people had left their homeland Switzerland and many beloved relatives in the early 1900' s for life in the American Midwest, only to encounter yearning, homesickness, and …

Language Acquisition In Children With Autism, Tina Taylor Feb 2001

Language Acquisition In Children With Autism, Tina Taylor

Faculty Publications

By definition, children with autism have deficits in communication. Often, when parents notice that something is "different" about their child, it is that he does not acquire language at the same rate as his peers, that the child uses what language he has in an idiosyncratic fashion (e.g., repeating phrases from videos, using pronouns incorrectly), or that the child appears to understand only that language which might be reinforcing to him (e.g., not responding to "Look at Mommy," but responding to "Do you want a cookie?)" When these "red flags" are apparent, parents should beware of misguided advice such as …

The Prevention Of Infirm Or Monstrous Births, Michael T. Walton, Robert M. Fineman Jan 2001

The Prevention Of Infirm Or Monstrous Births, Michael T. Walton, Robert M. Fineman

Quidditas

From ancient times, humans have tried to improve reproductive outcome, that is, to give birth to healthy, beautiful babies. Both folk traditions and medical theories offered hope that inform or monstrous births could be avoided. While most efforts were ineffectual by modern standards, some may have been beneficial. It was not until well into the twentieth century that clearly demonstrable therapies were developed to improve birth outcomes. However, those therapies were almost as limited as the ancient techniques, in light of the possibilities of genetic therapy in the twenty-first century. In the following essay, we will look at the history …
