The purpose of the Faith for Rights Toolkit Conversion project is to convert an existing learning framework, the Faith for Rights Toolkit (FFRT) into an online learning resource useable by interfaith actors and human rights activists of varying educational and cultural contexts, thus enabling them to advocate for and teach about human rights in their respective communities. This project was sponsored by the BYU J. Reuben Clark Law School under the direction of Professor David H. Moore, Associate Director of the International Center for Law and Religious Studies (ICLRS). The project was completed in conjunction with the human rights law …

Why & What Attorneys Should Know About Community Resources Available To Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Kristen Clarke Kellems, Kristen Clarke Kellems Feb 2023

Why & What Attorneys Should Know About Community Resources Available To Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Kristen Clarke Kellems, Kristen Clarke Kellems

Faculty Publications

This CLE program explains why attorneys representing survivors of domestic violence should understand and use community resources as part of effective legal advocacy. Leaving an abusive relationship can create immediate risks involving safety, housing, finances, transportation, childcare, and emotional health. These barriers can affect a survivor’s stability, decision-making, and ability to participate effectively in a legal case. Drawing on survivor and volunteer-attorney perspectives, the presenters show how appropriate referrals can strengthen both client outcomes and legal representation while keeping attorneys within their professional role.

The program surveys Utah resources available through 211, the Department of Workforce Services, domestic violence shelters, …

Dengue Fever In South And Southeast Asia, Mikaela D. Lubin Feb 2023

Dengue Fever In South And Southeast Asia, Mikaela D. Lubin

Ballard Brief

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that impacts South and Southeast Asia at significant rates. It is carried primarily by the aedes aegypti mosquito, a species that thrives in warm, tropical climates. Features of dengue include excruciating pain and, in severe cases, internal bleeding, shock, and death. The spread of dengue in South and Southeast Asia is due to several factors, including advancements in transportation, poor preventative measures, poor sanitation, and subsequent standing water, which is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Dengue causes many negative consequences on individuals and communities it affects, including pain and suffering, lasting physiological effects, …

Enlisting School Faculty To Help Identify Childhood Sexual Abuse In Elementary Students And Prevent Personality Disorders In Adolescents, Mckell Lindsay Jan 2023

Enlisting School Faculty To Help Identify Childhood Sexual Abuse In Elementary Students And Prevent Personality Disorders In Adolescents, Mckell Lindsay

Student Works

One out of 10 children are abused before the age of 18 (Darkness to Light, 2015). They are often abused by parents or family members, demonstrating that elementary school faculty should be enlisted to help recognize and report childhood sexual abuse (Alvarez et al., 2004; United States Government Accountability Office, 2014). Trainings should be provided to educators on how to best help children in this situation (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2003). Once teachers report abuse, children can receive the help they need through CBT, TF-CBT, art therapy, and group therapy (Devlin et al., 2019; Kim et al., …

Deep Transfer Learning For Approximate Model Predictive Control, Samuel Arce Munoz, Junho Park, Cristina M. Stewart, Adam M. Martin, John Hedengren Jan 2023

Deep Transfer Learning For Approximate Model Predictive Control, Samuel Arce Munoz, Junho Park, Cristina M. Stewart, Adam M. Martin, John Hedengren

Faculty Publications

Transfer learning is a machine learning technique that takes a pre-trained model that has already been trained on a related task, and adapts it for use on a new, related task. This is particularly useful in the context of model predictive control (MPC), where deep transfer learning is used to improve the training of the MPC by leveraging the knowledge gained from related controllers. One way in which transfer learning is applied in the context of MPC is by using a pre-trained deep learning model of the MPC, and then fine-tuning the controller training for a new process automation task. …

Inadequate Immigration System For Asylum Seekers At The Us-Mexico Border, Kyli F. Soug Jan 2023

Inadequate Immigration System For Asylum Seekers At The Us-Mexico Border, Kyli F. Soug

Ballard Brief

The history of immigration in the US goes back to its founding. However, in recent years, immigration trends at the US-Mexico border have gained media and political attention as more migrants flee to the border and face challenges as they seek refuge in the US. The inadequate immigration system has been exacerbated as legislation like the Migrant Protection Protocols and metering complicates the legal system and forces asylum seekers into border towns. Border patrol's misuse of resources and insufficient immigration data also contributes to the inadequate immigration system. Families and individuals seeking legal asylum at the border are being detained …

Judicial Murder: The Witch-Craze In Germany And Switzerland, Albert Winkler Jan 2023

Judicial Murder: The Witch-Craze In Germany And Switzerland, Albert Winkler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Among the most remarkable and puzzling social, religious and legal movements of the late Middle Ages and Early Modern periods of European history were the witch-hunts. Historians have often disagreed on the exact time frame of the witch-craze, but these actions largely spanned three centuries roughly from 1450 to 1750, most of which took place from 1500 to 1650. Some estimates on the number of people accused of witchcraft and those executed for the supposed crime reach into the hundreds of thousands. Professor Nachman Ben-Yahuda has stated, “From the early decades of the fourteenth century until 1650, continental Europeans executed …

Doctrine And Covenants 21: Metanarrative Of The Restoration, Steve L. Olsen Jan 2023

Doctrine And Covenants 21: Metanarrative Of The Restoration, Steve L. Olsen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Joseph Smith dictated Doctrine and Covenants 21 at the inaugural meeting of the Church of Jesus Christ on April 6, 1830. The present study examines the literary craftsmanship of the revelation to plumb the depths of its role in the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The analysis explores the meaning of patterns of usage in the text from the most specific (diction, syntax, figures of speech) to the most general (tone, rhetoric, and structural logic). The hypothesis of this study is that Doctrine and Covenants 21 provides a metanarrative of the Restoration — that is, a set of …

Hamlet In Cinema: Oedipus Lives On, Keolanani Kinghorn Jan 2023

Hamlet In Cinema: Oedipus Lives On, Keolanani Kinghorn

Quidditas

I have often questioned why Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a play more than 400 years old, remains tied to a century-old Freudian concept. Since Freud’s Oedipus Complex has been disproven, what purpose does it still serve and why are directors still intrigued by this interpretation of Hamlet? In 1949, Dr. Ernest Jones published his book, Hamlet and Oedipus (1949),1 but at the time he was also collaborating with Laurence Olivier to create the first movie adaptation of Hamlet to embrace the Oedipus Complex. I believe that because of Jones and Olivier Shakespeare’s Hamlet will always be connected to psychoanalysis. While …

A Restoration Of Paul’S Understanding Of Faith As A Relationship Of Action, Godfrey J. Ellis Jan 2023

A Restoration Of Paul’S Understanding Of Faith As A Relationship Of Action, Godfrey J. Ellis

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Brent Schmidt builds on his earlier book on relational grace by tackling the topic of relational faith. For those interested in historical trends in religious thought, this book provides intimate details of Greek and Latin terms and the gradual corruption of the original Pauline concept of faith by Augustine and other early and influential thinkers and theologians. Leading the reader through the conceptual reworking of the idea of faith by examining both well-known and lesser-known reformers, but somewhat skirting the faith-works debate, Schmidt ends up nevertheless convincingly demonstrating two facts. First, that faith as concrete action, not just as abstract …

“In This Batter’D Caravanserai”, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2023

“In This Batter’D Caravanserai”, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, based upon verses composed by an eleventh-century Persian mathematician and astronomer, the English Victorian poet Edward FitzGerald eloquently portrays human life in an indifferent, deterministic universe that lacks any evident purpose and is bereft of divine Providence. The poem’s suggested response to such a universe is an unambitious life of hedonism, distraction, and gentle despair. It is curiously modern, and those considering the adoption of anything like its worldview might want to read it, and to think about its implications, very carefully.

Understanding The Role Of Online Teaching Assistants In Student Engagement, Sara H. Tuiloma, Charles R. Graham Jan 2023

Understanding The Role Of Online Teaching Assistants In Student Engagement, Sara H. Tuiloma, Charles R. Graham

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we examine how online teaching assistants (OLTAs) interact with students in terms of affective, behavioral, and cognitive support and the influence of OLTA training on these interactions. Through a thematic network analysis, using a tracking instrument and semi-structured interviews with 10 OLTAs, we examined how online university students are supported based on the quantity and quality of interactions with OLTAs, and how training contributes to interactions. Our research addressed two key questions: (1) How do OLTAs support learners in the quantity and quality of interactions? and (2) How does OLTA training around affective and behavioral support influence …

Best Practices In Online Course Design That Help Eliminate Learning Fatigue, Valarie Anderson O'Bryan Jan 2023

Best Practices In Online Course Design That Help Eliminate Learning Fatigue, Valarie Anderson O'Bryan

The Utah English Journal

Even though students have returned to learning in-person in schools, many districts require teachers to maintain an online course (usually using Canvas). When teachers use best practices when designing online learning content, students are less likely to experience frustration and learning fatigue.

Review: Samuel Morris Brown. Joseph Smith’S Translation: The Words And Worlds Of Early Mormonism. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2020., Douglas J. Davies Jan 2023

Review: Samuel Morris Brown. Joseph Smith’S Translation: The Words And Worlds Of Early Mormonism. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2020., Douglas J. Davies

Mormon Studies Review

Why do we write books? Why did Joseph Smith write his, and why does Samuel Brown write on Smith writing his? I suppose this regressive query may sound mildly absurd coming from one academic to others, largely alert to career, pride, obligation and, optimistically, to the love of shared knowing. Perhaps I have written too many myself, read far more and—just now—for whatever reason, find this rhetorical question springing to mind. By contrast, it is usually easy to answer the question of how someone has written their book, ascertain its genre, and comment on its single disciplinary driver or, as …

It Takes Two, Jenet Jacob Erickson Jan 2023

It Takes Two, Jenet Jacob Erickson

BYU Studies

In 2006, Canadian fathering scholar Andrea Doucet shared an illuminating moment from her extensive research with single dads. After a long evening discussing these fathers’ experiences, Doucet asked, “In an ideal world, what resources or supports would you like to see for single fathers?” She expected to hear that they wanted greater social support and societal acceptance, more programs and policies directed at single dads. Instead, after a period of awkward silence, one dad stood and said, “An ideal world would be one with a father and a mother. We’d be lying if we pretended that wasn’t true.” Nods of …

The Stewardship Of Our First Freedom, Elder Clark G. Gilbert Jan 2023

The Stewardship Of Our First Freedom, Elder Clark G. Gilbert

BYU Studies

When Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke at the University of Oxford’s Pembroke College about the impact of religious freedom on public morality, he charged people of faith to be effective stewards of religious freedom. Elder Cook stated, “There is no better demonstration of the great benefits associated with religious liberty than for devoted members of various faiths who feel accountable to God to model principles of integrity, morality, service, and love.” In this sense, our religious freedom stewardship extends not only to society but …

On Gospel Methodology At Brigham Young University, Richard D, Osguthorpe, Justin Collings Jan 2023

On Gospel Methodology At Brigham Young University, Richard D, Osguthorpe, Justin Collings

BYU Studies

In recent years, both university and Church leaders have placed renewed and welcome emphasis on President Spencer W. Kimball’s “Second Century Address,” one of the central texts in the BYU canon. Of the many stirring ideas in that landmark address, one of the most evocative is President Kimball’s declaration that “gospel methodology, concepts, and insights can help us to do what the world cannot do in its own frame of reference.” Current BYU leaders have reflected on the concept of “gospel methodology,” and at the August 2022 university conference, Academic Vice President C. Shane Reese invited BYU faculty to explore …

The Psalm Of Nephi In An Age Of Anxiety And Division, Patrick Q. Mason Jan 2023

The Psalm Of Nephi In An Age Of Anxiety And Division, Patrick Q. Mason

BYU Studies

It is probably fair to say that readers over the years have responded more positively to the Book of Mormon’s religious teachings and spiritual power than to its purely literary merits. When Parley P. Pratt famously wrote that “sleep was a burden when the night came, for [he] preferred reading to sleep,” it was not because of the Book of Mormon’s page-turning plot. Rather, Pratt testified, “As I read, the spirit of the Lord was upon me, and I knew and comprehended that the book was true.” On the other hand, those uninspired by what they discovered in the book’s …

Richard Bushman’S Byu Years: The Beginnings Of An Influential Career, J. B. Haws

BYU Studies

The case can be made—and has been made—that Richard Lyman Bushman has been as influential as anyone in his generation in shaping the way that Latter-day Saints think about, write about, and talk about our shared history. His seminal books on Joseph Smith, his essays on historical philosophy, his two decades of mentoring graduate students every summer—all of these have had a real and discernible impact on Church publications and paradigms.

Sociophonetics And Dialectology, Dominic Watt, Margaret E. L. Renwick, Joseph A. Stanley Jan 2023

Sociophonetics And Dialectology, Dominic Watt, Margaret E. L. Renwick, Joseph A. Stanley

Faculty Publications

In this chapter we explore how the investigation of phonetic detail in speech seen through a sociolinguistic lens can inform and enhance our understanding of dialectal variation in languages. We begin by examining how sociophonetics can be considered an offshoot of dialectology, later to mature into a free- standing discipline during the late twentieth century. We next discuss the reconvergence of sociophonetics and dialectology as it became clearer that the two approaches to the study of language variation are, in combination, greater than the sum of their parts, even if their agendas may place different emphases on what should be …
