Transcendental Meditation And Mormonism, Gregory C. Cherry
Transcendental Meditation And Mormonism, Gregory C. Cherry
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis cites many of the parallels and differences between Mormonism and Transcendental Meditation (TM) philosophy as it is expounded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Areas explored include the following: (1) the technique of Transcendental Meditation as compared with notions of meditation within the Mormon tradition; (2) the issue of whether Transcendental Meditation is a religion; (3) reports of physical transformation as a result of TM and Mormonism; (4) a comparison of L.D.S. Church leaders' and Maharishi's views of America, the laws of the land, social order, modesty, drugs, and strict morality; (5) the ideas of inner and outer morality; (6) …
The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper
The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper
Theses and Dissertations
Irrigation has played an important part in the development of the Western States. Its beginnings have often been associated with the Mormon settlement in Utah. However, irrigation had its inception in the West long before the Mormons came to the Great Basin in 1847. The spatial extent of irrigation before this date included limited acreage in nearly every Western State.
Before their arrival in the Great Basin the Mormons had become acquainted with irrigation methods. Knowledge of irrigation had diffused to them primarily from the Spanish in the Southwest. Thus, they were well prepared to begin their irrigation enterprises in …

History Of Mormon Exhibits In World Expositions, Gerald Joseph Peterson
History Of Mormon Exhibits In World Expositions, Gerald Joseph Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
The history of Mormon Exhibits in world expositions is an important chapter in the over-all accounting of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints total missionary program. In seeking more proficient means for accomplishing this task, involvement in world expositions offered a fresh opportunity to which the Church quickly responded. Finances, inexperience, non-acceptance by the world religious community and struggle for security appeared to be significant obstacles to extensive activity in early world's fairs.
Eventually as the Church strengthened, it became less the national spectacle and significantly was given its first real world's fair opportunity in an exhibit sponsored …
Some Demographic Aspects Of One Hundred Early Mormon Converts, 1830-1837, Laurence Milton Yorgason
Some Demographic Aspects Of One Hundred Early Mormon Converts, 1830-1837, Laurence Milton Yorgason
Theses and Dissertations
Questions regarding the conditions of the origin of Mormonism have been asked repeatedly since Joseph Smith first made his claims public regarding his religious experiences. The same questions have been asked by both proponents and opponents of Smith's story: "How did Mormonism begin?", "Who was Joseph Smith?", "What was Joseph Smith?", "What did he do?" If it could be shown that Joseph Smith was an honest, upright, and sincere person, then the religion he produced was more likely to be reliable and truthful. If it could be shown that Joseph Smith was a fraud and a deceiver, then presumably, the …
Proselyting Techniques Of Mormon Missionaries, Jay E. Jensen
Proselyting Techniques Of Mormon Missionaries, Jay E. Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a review of proselyting techniques in the full-time missionary program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1830 to 1974. Official handbooks as well as Mormon mission publications were the major sources. The writer's experience as a full-time missionary gave additional perspective.
Missionary techniques involved personal contacting on the streets and door to door. Group contacting came through public meetings and the mass media. Church members played a vital role in contacting and fellowshipping nonmembers. Early proselyting lesson plans written in outline form emphasized logic and reason. Later ones were in dialogue form and …

Proposal: Pioneer Venus Orbiter Mission Magnetic Field Investigation, Edward J. Smith, Leverett Davis Jr., Douglas E. Jones, Bruce T. Tsurutani
Faculty Publications
The magnetic field investigation on the Venus Orbiter Mission must provide sensitive, accurate measurements of the magnetic field at all locations along the spacecraft orbit. In addition to being able to search for and measure any weak global magnetic field that may exist, the magnetometer must have the capability of measuring fields at frequencies high enough to permit a comprehensive study of the bow shock, the region between the shock and the ionopause, the expansion fan and the wake. Accurate measurements outside the interaction region must be made in order to provide necessary information concerning the configuration of the perturbing …

Rotationally Inelastic Molecular Scattering. Computational Tests Of Some Simple Solutions Of The Strong Coupling Problem, Thomas P. Tsien, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack
Faculty Publications
Partial cross sections (opacity functions) for rotational transitions in atom-diatom collisions are computed in the infinite-order sudden (IOS) approximation and compared with accurate close-coupling (CC) calculations. Agreement is good in the dominant coupling (small total angular momentum J) region. Simple methods for calculating integral inelastic cross sections are discussed, and it is found that accurate cross sections can often be computed very simply, even when large numbers of channels are coupled together, by using IOS or first-order sudden (FOS) approximations for small J and CC or exponential Born (EBDW) methods for large J.

The Effects Of Soil Texture On Species Diversity In An Arid Grassland Of The Eastern Great Basin, John W. Wyckoff
The Effects Of Soil Texture On Species Diversity In An Arid Grassland Of The Eastern Great Basin, John W. Wyckoff
Great Basin Naturalist
A primary factor limiting plant species diversity in desert grasslands seems to be soil texture. Loamy soils consistently support more species than do adjacent sands. This is probably related to the increased micro-environmental differences associated with heavy textured soils. Such soils would be expected to have more microtopographic and soil moisture variations than sandy soils.

State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson
State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson
Theses and Dissertations
Germinating barley seeds have been shown to take up Bacillus subtilis DNA labelled with 5-bromouracil and tritiated thymidine and retain the DNA in the root system without substantially degrading it. The percentage of bacterial DNA recovered from the total root DNA was independent of the amount of bacterial DNA available for uptake. Four observations indicated the stability of bacterial DNA after uptake into barley roots: (1) the bacterial DNA retained its transforming ability after recovery from the roots; (2) the labelled B. subtilis DNA showed similar CsCl density gradient patterns before uptake and after uptake; (3) most of the radioactivity …

Fate And Metabolism Of Bas 290-H In A Model Ecosystem, Kuo-Mei Chang
Theses and Dissertations
The use of chemicals to control economic pests has grown in this century both in the amount and the diversity of materials used (Headley and Lewis, 1967). About ten billion pounds of pesticides have been used in the United States since 1945. It is estimated that there are 340 million acres of cultivated lands in the Continental United States. Of this amount, approximately 119 million acres were sprayed with herbicides, 97 million acres were treated with insecticides and 25 million acres were treated with fungicides and other minor pesticides (Matsumura, 1972).

The Effects Of Penicillin Upon The Fission Rate Of Dugesia Dorotocephala., John J. Fahsbender
The Effects Of Penicillin Upon The Fission Rate Of Dugesia Dorotocephala., John J. Fahsbender
Theses and Dissertations
Planaria (class Turbellaria) are the highest life forms which exhibit fission (Hyman, 1951). The laboratory planarian, Dugesia, lives in lakes, ponds, streams and springs, where it occupies bottom habitats. Fissioning is an asexual mode of reproduction. The fission plane is usually transverse, forming behind the pharynx, and separation appears to be dependent upon locomotion (Curtis, 1902). The posterior half of the worm adheres to the substratum while the anterior half continues to move forward until the worm snaps in two. Each half then regenerates the missing parts, forming two new smaller worms.

Development Of Standard Procedures For Determination Of [Delta]G° (K), [Delta]H° And [Delta]S° Values Via Potentiometric And Calorimetric Titration Techniques, Jack Hugh Ruckman
Theses and Dissertations
Standard computer techniques were developed for computation of ΔG° values from potentiometric titration data and ΔH° values from calorimetric titration data. The procedures developed can be used for any systems having the general equations HA = W^+ + A^- ; H_2A = 2H^+ + A^2- ; and H_3A = 3H^+ + A^3-, where the proton ionizations may be consecutive or simultaneous. The thermodynamic values ΔG°(K), ΔH° and ΔS° were determined for the ionization of protons from the protonated compounds methionine (-NH_3^+ group only), phosphoethanalomine and phosphoserine. The compounds studied were selected because they contain one, two and three ionizable protons …
