Mormonism And The Maori: A Look At Beginnings Apr 2002

Mormonism And The Maori: A Look At Beginnings

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched a sustained mission to the New Zealand Maori beginning in the 1880s. Within a few short years thousands had been baptized. By the turn of the century, the church counted nearly a tenth of the total Maori population as members, with a significantly higher percentage in certain pas (settlements) along the east coast of the North Island from the southern Wairarapa to Poverty Bay and beyond.1 The reason Mormonism was so well accepted among a significant minority of Maori in the final decades of the nineteenth century and why it continues …

Multiple Discourses In Early Mormon Religion, Jon M. Duncan Aug 1998

Multiple Discourses In Early Mormon Religion, Jon M. Duncan

Theses and Dissertations

The development of early Mormon religion is best viewed in the context of multiple discourses, each of which contained various competing symbols. These discourses shaped the mind and world-view of early Latter-day Saints and determined in part their behavior. Prophetic symbols existed simultaneously with other, more American symbols; and while neither discourse excluded the other, a prophetic discourse gradually came to dominate. At the same time, however, the American discourse in Mormon religion remained intact and continued to influence the behavior and actions of early Mormons.

The Mormons In Wilhelmie Germany, 1870-1914: Making A Place For An Unwanted American Religion In A Changing German Society, Michael Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Between 1853 and 1914 the kingdom of Prussia and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons, disagreed over the issue of Mormon missionaries proselyting in Prussia. In 1853 royal magistrates banished all Mormon missionaries from the kingdom for advocating emigration. A new church policy of preaching without seeking for official permission, in addition to an improved relationship between the Mormons in Utah and the United States government after the Manifesto of 1890, led to an increase in missionaries sent to Germany, including Prussia. By 1900 mormon success alarmed the Prussian Protestant clergy and a few Prussian governors …

The Southern Utah Expedition Of Parley P. Pratt: 1849-1850, Rick J. Fish Jan 1992

The Southern Utah Expedition Of Parley P. Pratt: 1849-1850, Rick J. Fish

Theses and Dissertations

In 1849, President Brigham Young commissioned a fifty man company, headed by Parley P. Pratt, to explore Southern Utah for possible colonization. The four month trek spanned the coldest months of the winter, and afforded some very harrowing and hazardous experiences. These events weave a heroic story filled with excitement and adventure, while simultaneously revealing the tremendous dedication and fortitude on the part of the explorers to successfully complete their mission.

Many of the Southern Utah colonies that were initiated in the subsequent years following the expedition were based on information gathered during this seven-hundred mile expedition. In addition, their …

Mormons And Germany, 1914-1933: A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Germany And Its Relationship With The German Governments From World War I To The Rise Of Hitler, Jeffery L. Anderson Jan 1991

Mormons And Germany, 1914-1933: A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Germany And Its Relationship With The German Governments From World War I To The Rise Of Hitler, Jeffery L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This paper focuses on the Church's struggle in establishing itself in Germany with cultural, social, political and religious problems. The cultural and social problems focus primarily on the interaction between Mormon-American missionaries and leaders who preached Mormonism in a society somewhat different from their own. The political problems concern historical events such as the first world war, the inflation of 1923 in Germany, and the rise of Hitler, while the religious problems focus on the Church's interaction with other faiths who generally opposed it and the struggle of missionaries to establish congregations.

The Social Origins Of The Kirtland Mormons, Mark R. Grandstaff, Milton Vaughn Backman Jr. Apr 1990

The Social Origins Of The Kirtland Mormons, Mark R. Grandstaff, Milton Vaughn Backman Jr.

BYU Studies

Kirtland, Ohio, was settled mostly by New Englanders prior to the arrival of a group of Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) in 1831. The Mormons came from New York and New England. These settlers were part of a westward movement of people looking for more farmland and a better climate than was found in New England and New York. The Mormons who came to Kirtland were not transients; about 95 percent had moved two times before or fewer. This article looks at schooling, wealth, and religiosity of the Mormons in Kirtland. It includes diary …

An Appetitional Theory Of Sexual Motivation: Its Contemporary Status And Applications In An Approach To Change, Kenneth R. Hardy Oct 1989

An Appetitional Theory Of Sexual Motivation: Its Contemporary Status And Applications In An Approach To Change, Kenneth R. Hardy

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Changes are noted in American society and culture in the last generation since the appetitional theory was first formulated. A current statement of the theory is reviewed, together with the concepts of motivation upon which it is based. A model of change is introduced, based upon central Christian concepts, especially as they are propounded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The change model and the appetitional theory are then applied to the area of human sexuality in an attempt to provide a framework for a program of positive change.
Address to AMCAP Convention March 31, 1989.
