High Rates Of Photosynthesis In The Desert Shrub Chrysothamnus Nauseosus Ssp. Albicaulis, Tim D. Davis, N. Sankhla, W. R. Andersen, D. J. Weber, B. N. Smith Jul 1985

High Rates Of Photosynthesis In The Desert Shrub Chrysothamnus Nauseosus Ssp. Albicaulis, Tim D. Davis, N. Sankhla, W. R. Andersen, D. J. Weber, B. N. Smith

Great Basin Naturalist

Basic aspects of photosynthesis were investigated in white rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Pallas) Britt. ssp. albicaulis), a common C3 deciduous shrub native to arid regions of the western U.S. Under favorable field conditions, net photosynthesis (Pn) ranged from 36 to 73 mg CO2 · dm −2 · hr−1, which is relatively high for a woody species. The leaves from the actively growing flowering shoots exhibited higher Pn than those on the vegetative shoots. Pn also varied according to the age of the leaves and the location of the plants. P …

Statistical Assumption-Making In Library Collection Assessment: Peccadilloes And Pitfalls, Richard Hacken Jun 1985

Statistical Assumption-Making In Library Collection Assessment: Peccadilloes And Pitfalls, Richard Hacken

Faculty Publications

Assessing library collections in the Semiconductor Age necessarily involves a heavy use of quantitative data. The assumptions made during the process of gathering, manipulating, and reporting library statistics may or may not be valid ones. Objective and vigilant scrutiny, therefore, can make the difference between an assessment that adds to a greater knowledge of the collection and one that only adds greater bulk to The File. Among the areas affected by statistical assumptions are (in lay terms): the sample, the survey, the percentage, the average, the degree of accuracy.

Flexible Engineering Software: An Integrated Workstation Approach To Finite Element Analysis, Brant Arnold Ross Apr 1985

Flexible Engineering Software: An Integrated Workstation Approach To Finite Element Analysis, Brant Arnold Ross

Theses and Dissertations

One obstacle preventing more engineers from using finite element analysis (FEA) is the difficulty of transferring data between steps in the modeling process. A Fortran computer program, Rosetta.BYU, has been developed to open data paths between finite element preprocessors (mesh generators) and finite element analysis programs, using a custom data structure. It accepts neutral data files, Version 2.0 IGES data files, and Movie.BYU files for input/output. An application of Rosetta is described. A general workstation manager program, Davinci.BYU, is reviewed that provides a support layer between the engineer and the operating system, organizes software and data files, and facilitates on-line …

The Effects Of Religious Affiliation And Attendance On Illicit Sexual Behavior And Substance Abuse, Thomas W. Zane Apr 1985

The Effects Of Religious Affiliation And Attendance On Illicit Sexual Behavior And Substance Abuse, Thomas W. Zane

Theses and Dissertations

A sample of 7724 college students in Washington and Utah was selected to study the relationships of religious activity and religious affiliation to illicit sexual behaviors, use of marijuana, and getting drunk. For all religious affiliations (except for the Jews), there were significant correlations between church activity and the measured illicit behaviors. LDS rates of behavior were significantly lower at <.001 for the five illicit behaviors. Two factor analyses were calculated to determine which sexual behaviors would load on a single factor and which substances would load on another factor. Extramarital coitus, heavy petting, and passionate kissing formed the first "sexual" factor. The use of beer, liquor, and marijuana combined with the behavior getting drunk to form the "substance-abuse" factor. A canonical analysis reported a moderate relationship with a canonical coefficient of .534 between the two factors. A discriminant analysis based on each subjects' religious affiliation and activity level yielded a 70-80 percent correct classification percentage.

Latin And Vernacular In Fourteenth- And Fifteenth-Century Italy, Paul Oskar Kristeller Jan 1985

Latin And Vernacular In Fourteenth- And Fifteenth-Century Italy, Paul Oskar Kristeller

Quidditas

The subject of this essay concerns Dante only indirectly and in part. Nevertheless I hope to be able, among other things, to explain Dante's historical position and his influence on the Italian Renaissance. I cannot avoid partially repeating what I wrote in some of my previous studies, especially in my early article on the Italian prose language. Some of my prior observations, which seemed new to me at the time, have since been widely accepted; but some new sources and literature have been added in the meantime, and on some points I have changed my opinion or paid attention to …

Application Of Combined Jointed Media And Discrete Slip Plane Characteristics To Subsidence Predictions, David W. Basinger

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an application of a numerical formulation incorporating the effects of joints, cracks, and fractures to a soil subsidence predictions problem, and the extension of that formulation to combined discrete slip planes and jointed media continua formulations. The results obtained are compared to each other and to a physical centrifuge simulation performed previously on the same problem.

Diatoms Of The Middle Fork Of The Salmon River Drainage, With Notes On Their Relative Abundance And Distribution, C. E. Cushing, S. R. Rushforth

Great Basin Naturalist

A total of 145 species of diatoms was collected from 13 sites in the Middle Fork of the Salmon River drainage, Idaho, USA. Achnanthes minutissima was the prevalent species with an importance index of 19.25. Cluster analysis revealed 2 main site groupings, sites above the entrance of Loon Creek and sites below. The entrance of Loon Creek (6th order) increases the Middle Fork of the Salmon River to a 7th order stream. Shannon–Weiner diversity values were generally high.

Field Establishment Of Fourwing Saltbush In Processed Oil Shale And Disturbed Native Soil As Influenced By Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae, C. A. Call, C. M. Mckell Apr 1984

Field Establishment Of Fourwing Saltbush In Processed Oil Shale And Disturbed Native Soil As Influenced By Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae, C. A. Call, C. M. Mckell

Great Basin Naturalist

Seedlings of fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt.) were inoculated with indigenous vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi in a containerized system and transplanted into processed oil shale and disturbed native soil in a semiarid rangeland environment in northwestern Colorado. After two growing seasons in the field, plants inoculated with VAM had greater aboveground biomass, cover, and height than noninoculated plants. Mycorrhizal plants were more effective in the uptake of water and phosphorus. Infection levels of inoculated plants were greatly reduced in processed shale (from 13.0 at outplanting to 3.8 at harvest), but functional VAM associations could be found after two …

"Use And Abuse" In Romeo And Juliet, Maurice Hunt Jan 1984

"Use And Abuse" In Romeo And Juliet, Maurice Hunt

Quidditas

Near the midpoint of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence formulates an authoritative-sounding concept which seemingly lends itself to interpreting tragedy. Gathering "baleful weeds" and "precious juiced flowers," the Friar states that everything earthly has a virtuous use and a potential abuse:

O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies

In plants, herbs, stones, and their true qualities.

For naught so vile that on the earth doth live

But too the earth some special good doth give;

Nor aught so good but, strain'd from that fair use,

Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse.

Virtue itself turns vice being misapplied, …

A Case Of Double Inscription: Carlos De Sigüenza Y Góngora's Infortunios De Alonso Ramírez, Lee H. Dowling Jan 1984

A Case Of Double Inscription: Carlos De Sigüenza Y Góngora's Infortunios De Alonso Ramírez, Lee H. Dowling

Quidditas

Among the early works of Latin American prose literature, Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora's Infortunios de Alonso Ramírez has attracted a relatively large share of critical attention. Much of this has stemmed from an interest in tracing the antecedents of the Latin American novel – the novel believed to represent a prestigious literary genre whose comparatively late appearance in Latin America has been the theme of much discussion. While such interest led a number of critics to reread Infortunios and other comparable early works with renewed interest, evaluations stemming from the search for a nucleus of characteristics derived from the …

Violence And The Plague In Aragón, 1348-1351, Melanie V. Shirk Jan 1984

Violence And The Plague In Aragón, 1348-1351, Melanie V. Shirk

Quidditas

As Philip Ziegler has noted, "Statistics alone cannot provide an adequate picture of the Black Death." To say that one-quarter or one-third or one-half of Europe's population perished within a few years gains the reader's attention, but does not convey what such a brutal calamity meant to the average person at the time. The fourteenth century suffered many calamities, but the sudden and mysterious appearance of the Black Death, with no known cause or cure, msut surely have been the most terrifying.

The Image Of The Child In The English Mystery Cycles, Marilyn Sutton Jan 1984

The Image Of The Child In The English Mystery Cycles, Marilyn Sutton

Quidditas

Recent studies in family history have largely reaffirmed the commonplace that, prior to the Renaissance, children were seldom seen and rarely heard. Philippe Ariès and Lawrence Stone, for their parts, have traced the evolution of the concepts of childhood, privacy, and the conjugal family; the point of origin for each, they fix in the Renaissance. But encyclopedic as Ariès and Stone have been in researching their respective theories of "undiscovered childhood" and "conscious limitation of affection", they, nevertheless, have slighted the testimony of the popular literature of the English Middle Ages, an oversight that has led them to establish arbitrary …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Current Status Of Paid Religious Broadcasting On National Television, Wayne R. Bills Jan 1984

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Current Status Of Paid Religious Broadcasting On National Television, Wayne R. Bills

Theses and Dissertations

In examining the use of paid television by various evangelical organizations (the "Electronic Church") as contrasted with its use by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), several important differences were discovered. First, the programs of the electronic church are usually designed much like a normal Sunday service with a "preacher" and "congregation" (the T.V. viewers). The LDS approach has been to communicate religious principles through the use of a story. Their productions are attractive to a large audience because they often feature a well-known television or motion picture celebrity, and are aired during prime-time viewing hours.

The …

Selected Aspects Of Family Change In Provo, Utah: A Replication Of Canning's 1955 Survey, Richard B. Miller Jan 1984

Selected Aspects Of Family Change In Provo, Utah: A Replication Of Canning's 1955 Survey, Richard B. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a replication of Canning's 1955 survey of family life in Provo, Utah. The original sample consisted of 239 couples who were married and currently living there. The replication was a 1983 mail survey that used many of Canning's original questions and included a sample of 255 Provo families.

This study measured changes in several courtship and family variables using the companionship family as an ideal type. Findings included increases in the emphasis on the role of romantic love in mate selection, handsomeness as an attractive quality that women seek in a spouse, family members seeking recreation outside …
