Combining Expert Opinions To Assess Risk Of Change In Earth Systems: Permafrost Collapse, Global Wildfire, And Water Security, Sayedeh Sara Sayedi
Combining Expert Opinions To Assess Risk Of Change In Earth Systems: Permafrost Collapse, Global Wildfire, And Water Security, Sayedeh Sara Sayedi
Theses and Dissertations
In a world of uncertainty and change, leaders should base their decisions on best available scientific evidence. However, history has shown that science is often inadequately incorporated into the decision-making process. This dissertation investigates three environmental issues to identify the challenges of considering Earth system dynamics in policymaking and management. I also propose solutions for improving the two-way exchange of knowledge and values between researchers and policymakers. In chapter one, I investigate subsea permafrost carbon sensitivity to climate change using an expert assessment. The analysis revealed that subsea permafrost contains significant carbon stocks and is already contributing to climate change …
Who Gets The Whip? How Supplier Diversification Influences Bullwhip Effect In A Supply Chain, Tyler N. Burrows
Who Gets The Whip? How Supplier Diversification Influences Bullwhip Effect In A Supply Chain, Tyler N. Burrows
Theses and Dissertations
Emergent technologies, such as the `blockchain,' are enabling unprecedented coordination across firms in Supply Chains (SC). Firm decision-makers ultimately are going to need to understand how they can control (and optimize) such a network of relationships. However, the study of SC-level behavior leaves many open questions. Current approaches typically assume a focal firm, and the modeling of SC behavior is usually limited to single-product serial networks. In contrast, real-world SCs show that often a firm has many suppliers, even for the same raw material. This paper aims to understand how demand disturbances (e.g. the 'bullwhip effect') propagate and intensify throughout …

Lack Of Women In Federal Level Politics In The United States, Ellie Romans Draper
Lack Of Women In Federal Level Politics In The United States, Ellie Romans Draper
Ballard Brief
Women comprise 50.5% of the United States population, but only 28% of all officeholders in the 2023 US Congress. The scarcity of female role models in politics—caused by societal expectations, inadequate candidate recruitment, and a lack of interest in political leadership —contributes to a shortage of women in politics. Further, the double bind imposes contradictory expectations upon women, affecting their political ambition and others’ perceptions of their competence. As a result, there are policy gaps, especially in areas that affect women and their communities. Women’s underrepresentation also undermines democracy because the government is unable to reflect the interests of the …
Mass Shootings In The United States, Sydney Livingston
Mass Shootings In The United States, Sydney Livingston
Ballard Brief
High rates of mass shootings are becoming a uniquely American problem; the US makes up 73% of the world’s mass shootings, yet makes up only 4.25% of the world’s population. School shootings, in particular, have increased dramatically in the US since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, an event many perpetrators have since drawn upon as inspiration. There is a strong divide of opinions in the nation regarding how firearm deaths should be reduced, which has complicated and slowed progress in identifying effective solutions. Each mass shooting causes additional shootings to occur, and each one takes a toll on …
Countnet3d: A 3d Computer Vision Approach To Infer Counts Of Occluded Objects With Quantified Uncertainty, Stephen W. Nelson
Countnet3d: A 3d Computer Vision Approach To Infer Counts Of Occluded Objects With Quantified Uncertainty, Stephen W. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
3D scene understanding is an important problem that has experienced great progress in recent years, in large part due to the development of state-of-the-art methods for 3D object detection. However, the performance of 3D object detectors can suffer in scenarios where extreme occlusion of objects is present, or the number of object classes is large. In this paper, we study the problem of inferring 3D counts from densely packed scenes with heterogeneous objects. This problem has applications to important tasks such as inventory management or automatic crop yield estimation. We propose a novel regression-based method, CountNet3D, that uses mature 2D …

Shakespeare’S Prince Of Denmark: Political Pandering In Hamlet, Moriah Theriault
Shakespeare’S Prince Of Denmark: Political Pandering In Hamlet, Moriah Theriault
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
Shakespeare's Hamlet contains frequent cultural ties and insights into Danish tradition that depict intentional effort to represent Danish culture. These accuracies can be seen in the description of the castle in Elsinore, the deep-seated conflicts between Christian forgiveness and revenge, and the traditional cannon salutes featured in Hamlet. Shakespeare created these connections to Danish culture for a political maneuver to win the favor of King James and his wife, the Royal Queen Anne of Denmark.
Coping With Covid Through Tangled And Social Media, Maram Alturky
Coping With Covid Through Tangled And Social Media, Maram Alturky
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
In response to the events of COVID-19 in 2020, social content creators found connections between their lives and the life of Rapunzel as represented in Disney’s 2010 retelling of the Rapunzel tale, Tangled. To show these connections, YouTube videos were made to highlight the similarities between people’s lives under quarantine and Rapunzel’s containment in the tower. While these videos were seemingly made to play on current life events, they illustrate the many ways in which fairy tales have been used to bridge the fantastical and reality when attempting to cope with trauma. This article explores the connections between fairy tales …
“Hopelessly Crippled”: The Construction Of Disability In Borges’S “Funes, His Memory”, Madilyn Abbe
“Hopelessly Crippled”: The Construction Of Disability In Borges’S “Funes, His Memory”, Madilyn Abbe
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
In Jorge Luis Borges’s “Funes, His Memory,” the narrator presents Ireneo Funes as an intriguing example of both physical and cognitive atypicality. Although the narrator is quick to identify Funes’s deficiencies, he unashamedly acknowledges his own cognitive weaknesses as well. Using a literary disability studies lens, this article examines the construction of disability within the text, arguing that the narrator imposes disability onto Funes to mask the possibility that he be categorized as disabled. The narrator sets up an ableist binary to undermine Funes physically, yet this binary falls apart when applied to cognitive ability. In order to address this …

Exploring Technology Innovation In Harvard Case Method Teaching, Simon Greathead
Theses and Dissertations
This paper is an analysis of the affordances technology provides Harvard Case Method (HCM) teaching. The article focuses on the observations and subsequent interviews of multiple instructors over time as they taught the HCM in-person, online through the Covid pandemic, and post-Covid. We identify adjustments instructors made using technology to augment in-person teaching of the HCM post-Covid. This article proposes the PICRAT (Passive, Interactive, Creative, Replace, Amplify, Transform) model of technology integration as a framework for analyzing how instructors used technology to enhance HCM teaching. We observed multiple technology innovations that contributed to the passive, interactive, and creative learning environment …

Nibley Teams Up With Brigham Young To Look At Politics, Education, Leadership, And The Environment
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
As those who have read much Brigham Young know, the combination of this pioneer prophet's insight, articulateness, and candor is little short of stunning. Nibley calls him a "monumental figure," perhaps (after Joseph Smith), the most prominent mind of his century.

About a year ago, Richard Winwood, recently returned mission president and strong FARMS supporter, was visiting the FARMS office to discuss some future projects. After an hour or so discussing a long list of proposed projects, he bluntly announced that FARMS's ability to fulfill its mission was being compromised by the limitations of its physical facilities.
Real Time Tracking Of Sleep Behaviors As A Predictor Of Suicidal Ideation For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Social Anxiety, Yong Seuk Steven Lograsso
Real Time Tracking Of Sleep Behaviors As A Predictor Of Suicidal Ideation For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Social Anxiety, Yong Seuk Steven Lograsso
Theses and Dissertations
Suicide continues to be a critical concern for society as one of the leading causes of death in the United States, increasing from 10.4 to 13.5 per 100,000 from 2000 to 2016. This risk is further increased up to 8 times for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors have been difficult to predict on a moment-by-moment basis, in part due to technological challenges. Suicidal ideation has been identified as an important indicator of suicidal behavior and an important measurement for predicting suicide in both neurotypical individuals and individuals with autism spectrum disorder. In particular, sleep disturbances are …
Undergraduate Students' Conceptions Of Ngss Science And Engineering Practices, Jessie Webb
Undergraduate Students' Conceptions Of Ngss Science And Engineering Practices, Jessie Webb
Theses and Dissertations
In 2013, a new set of science standards was introduced for K-12 science education, called the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which focused on three dimensions of science learning that work together: disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices. These standards are novel in their emphasis on students needing more than only content knowledge to learn science and engineering. The NGSS science and engineering practices (SEPs) stress the importance of students engaging in the authentic practices of scientists and engineers to help them think like a scientist, practice science themselves, and overcome the misconception that science is …
Estimating Hemispheric Specialization In Autistic And Neurotypical Individuals, Madeline Peterson
Estimating Hemispheric Specialization In Autistic And Neurotypical Individuals, Madeline Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
While the brain appears to be symmetrical, macroscopic differences or asymmetries between the two hemispheres emerge through careful quantitative study. Functional asymmetries can accompany these structural asymmetries, and these can be a reflection of hemispheric specialization, or the predominant hosting of macroscale functional network and its accompanying functional properties by a given hemisphere. Prior work has identified the specialization of language to the left hemisphere, visuospatial attention to the right hemisphere, and a dual specialization of executive control to both hemispheres. However, it is largely unknown how specialization is characterized at an individual level, particularly in terms of identifying the …
