Feeding Elk In Greater Yellowstone: A Case Study In Ex-Ante Group Decision Support, Lynne Caughlan, D.L. Hoag Jul 2002

Feeding Elk In Greater Yellowstone: A Case Study In Ex-Ante Group Decision Support, Lynne Caughlan, D.L. Hoag

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Natural resource management decisions are complicated by multiple property rights, management objectives, and stakeholders with varying degrees of influence over the decision making process. Managers must consider all opinions when they develop management policies. Often this type of information is not understood until after a decision has been made, which can result in wasted time and effort. We developed an institutional framework to predict stakeholders’ influence in the resource management decision-making process before the stakeholder meetings actually occur. Then we applied the framework to an actual case study concerning whether to feed elk over the winter in the Greater Yellowstone …

Desyre – Decision Support System For Rehabilitation Of Contaminated Sites: Objectives And Structure, A. Critto, S. Giove, N. Nadal, M. Samiolo, C. Carlon, S. Silvoni, S. Foramiti, Antonio Marcomini

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The rehabilitation of contaminated sites is a complex process encompassing technological, environmental, socio-economic aspects. These aspects show close spatial and temporal inter-relations. Moreover, mega-sites (hundreds of hectares wide) require properly designed Decision Support Systems (DSS). In this work, a DEcision Support sYstem for the REqualification of contaminated sites (DESYRE) is proposed for the identification of the most effective rehabilitation interventions. The DSS is based on a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework and integrates environmental and technological databases, risk assessment models, and multi criteria procedures. It is composed of five modules: (1) characterisation, (2) risk, (3) socio-economical and (4) technological analysis, …

Continuous Contaminated Site Monitoring (Ccs M) Integrated Remote Real-Time Supervision For An Old Coking-P Lant, Frédéric Portet, Konrad Szafnicki, Jacques Bourgois, Véronique Milon

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The purpose of the Continuous Contaminated Site Monitoring (CCSM) is to develop a real time management methodology for PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) contaminated aquifer resulting from coal activity. For full-scale experimentation, since June 2000 an old coking plant site has been instrumented (sensors, analysers, datalogger, programmable logic controller, etc….). Its follow-up currently continues with remote supervision, via telecom connection. The Contaminated Sites Monitoring is a necessity to control the evolution of pollution and therefore the risk to human health or environment. With aromatic hydrocarbons contamination, one is generally satisfied with selective investigation, in fact incomplete and non-representative of the reality. …

Environmental Assessment Integrated With Process Simulation For Process Design, I. Herrera, Marta Schuhmacher, Laureano Jiménez, F. Castells Jul 2002

Environmental Assessment Integrated With Process Simulation For Process Design, I. Herrera, Marta Schuhmacher, Laureano Jiménez, F. Castells

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The decisions within design and renovation of processes have traditionally been based only on technical and economic aspects. The impacts that waste emissions have on the environment have been taken in consideration after setting the basic lines of the project and even after having fixed the layout. A new approach, involving all these issues at the same time, has been developed in order to make better use of natural resources. The aim of this work is to integrate both process design and environmental tools in order to develop a methodology that involves, simultaneously, environmental analysis and process modelling. This methodology …

Graphic Model-Based Software For Supporting The Search For Efficient Environmental Strategies: Method, Real-Life Applications And Future Developments, Alexander V. Lotov Jul 2002

Graphic Model-Based Software For Supporting The Search For Efficient Environmental Strategies: Method, Real-Life Applications And Future Developments, Alexander V. Lotov

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Application of a new graphic multi-criterion model-based approach to integrated assessment and screening of environmental strategies is described. The approach is based on integration of mathematical models and visualization of the Pareto-efficient (non-dominated) frontier. In the case of linear integrated models, the visualization is based on application of the Interactive Decision Maps (IDM) technique that visualizes the frontier in the form of multiple animated decision maps provided on-line. Interactive visualization of the Pareto-efficient frontier helps the user to understand potentialities of choice and criterion tradeoffs for 3 to 7 criteria. Moreover, the IDM technique supports identification of a preferred non-dominated …

Agent Based Simulation In Integrated Assessment And Resources Management, Claudia Pahl-Wostl Jul 2002

Agent Based Simulation In Integrated Assessment And Resources Management, Claudia Pahl-Wostl

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Resource management problems have become more and more complex. The traditional approach to solving isolated environmental problems with technological fixes and end-of-pipe solutions has started to shift towards a more thoughtful and integrated attitude. Hence it becomes more and more important to develop appropriate means for representing the human dimension in integrated models and in the development of resource management regimes. This involves the development of integrated approaches to problem solving and thus to include as well stakeholder perspectives. Stakeholder should be included in the process of developing and adopting any resource management plan. In order to improve stakeholder-based policy …

Outlook-Based Concept For The Population And Updating Of A Meta-Information System In Environmental Administration, P. Fischer-Stabel, R. Krieger, E. Rietzke Jul 2002

Outlook-Based Concept For The Population And Updating Of A Meta-Information System In Environmental Administration, P. Fischer-Stabel, R. Krieger, E. Rietzke

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Metadata is essential in retrieving information about the environment located at differentlydistributed organisational units of governmental administration. The population of the meta-informationsystem may be done based either on a centralised concept (e.g. with support of external interviewers) or on anon-centralised concept requiring a software tool accessible at each desktop computer where the dataholdercan enter the data directly. Often the implementation of such a tool is linked with a high effort in installationand training, especially if hundreds of clients have to be served. To overcome these disadvantages wedeveloped a software tool based on MS Outlook supporting the non-centralised maintenance concept. Thesoftware …

Investigating Uncertainty And Sensitivity In Integrated, Multimedia Environmental Models: Tools For 3mra, J. E. Babendreier, Karl J. Castleton

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Elucidating uncertainty and sensitivity structures in environmental models can be a difficult task, even for low-order, single-medium constructs driven by a unique set of site-specific data. Quantitative assessment of integrated, multimedia models that simulate hundreds of sites, spanning multiple geographical and ecological regions, will ultimately require a comparative approach using several techniques, coupled with sufficient computational power. The Framework for Risk Analysis in Multimedia Environmental Systems - Multimedia, Multipathway, and Multireceptor Risk Assessment (FRAMES-3MRA) is an important software model being developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for use in risk assessment of hazardous waste management facilities. The 3MRA …

Exploration Of The Behaviour Of A Stochastic Transport Model Using Computational Experiments, C. Rajanayaka, D. Kulasiri Jul 2002

Exploration Of The Behaviour Of A Stochastic Transport Model Using Computational Experiments, C. Rajanayaka, D. Kulasiri

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Fickian assumptions are used in deriving the advection-dispersion equation which models thesolute transport in porous media. The hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient defined as a result of theseassumptions has been found to be scale dependent. Kulasiri and Verwoerd [1999] developed a stochasticcomputational model for solute transport in saturated porous media without using Fickian assumptions. Themodel consists of two main parameters; correlation length and variance, and the velocity of solute wasassumed as a fundamental stochastic variable. In this paper, the stochastic model was investigated tounderstand its behaviour. As the statistical nature of the model changes with the parameters, thecomputational solution of the model …

Environmental Risk Assessment Of Pesticide Use Based On The Modelling Of The Environmental Fate Of Pesticides In Soil, Heico Apel, O. Richter Jul 2002

Environmental Risk Assessment Of Pesticide Use Based On The Modelling Of The Environmental Fate Of Pesticides In Soil, Heico Apel, O. Richter

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Based on laboratory and field experiments the environmental fate of four selected pesticides (Dimethoate, Fenvalerate, Malathion, and Metalaxyl) in the Jhikhu-Khola watershed, Nepal was investigated, both on soils representative for irrigated (khet) and rainfed (bari) conditions. The degradation, sorption, and transport behaviour were described with deterministic mathematical models. Based on these models a risk assessment of the accumulation of the pesticides in soil and groundwater was conducted. In order to achieve this standard, worst and best case scenarios were developed. The framework and conditions for the scenarios were set by the physical and socio-economic environment in the watershed, which was …

Implementing Soil And Water Conservation Production Systems At The Farm Level, Ted L. Napier, Silvana M. Napier Jul 2002

Implementing Soil And Water Conservation Production Systems At The Farm Level, Ted L. Napier, Silvana M. Napier

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Factors influencing adoption of soil and water conservation production systems at the farm level arediscussed in the context of their influence for motivating land owner-operators to adopt and to use conservationtechnologies and practices. Research focused on United States (US) farmers are examined to assess how social, economic, farm structure, and conservation program-participation factors affect adoption behaviors at the farmlevel. Research findings suggest that contemporary conservation programs that place emphasis on the provision ofinformation, education, technical assistance, and economic subsidies probably will not be successful in achievingsocietal conservation goals. Study findings basically demonstrated that factors commonly argued to influenceadoption of conservation production …

Elasticity In Microstructure Sensitive Design Through The Use Of Hill Bounds, Benjamin L. Henrie May 2002

Elasticity In Microstructure Sensitive Design Through The Use Of Hill Bounds, Benjamin L. Henrie

Theses and Dissertations

In engineering, materials are often assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic; in actuality, material properties do change with sample direction and location. This variation is due to the anisotropy of the individual grains and their spatial distribution in the material. Currently there is a lack of communication between the design engineer, material scientist, and processor for solving multi-objective/constrained designs. If communication existed between these groups then materials could be designed for applications, instead of the reverse. Microstructure sensitive design introduces a common language, a spectral representation, where both design properties and microstructures are expressed.

Using Hill bounds, effective elastic properties …

Does The Presence Of Wyethia Mollis Affect Growth Of Pinus Jeffreyi Seedlings?, G. M. Riegel, T. J. Svejcar, M. D. Busse May 2002

Does The Presence Of Wyethia Mollis Affect Growth Of Pinus Jeffreyi Seedlings?, G. M. Riegel, T. J. Svejcar, M. D. Busse

Western North American Naturalist

Regeneration of Pinus jeffreyi in the Sierra Nevada is often limited on sites dominated by Wyethia mollis. Allelopathic chemicals and competition for soil moisture have been suggested as possible mechanisms for limiting regeneration. We tested the hypothesis that soil chemical and microbial properties from sites in different stages of succession influence seedling growth of Pinus jeffreyi. Soil was collected from an early-seral site dominated by Wyethia mollis, a mid-seral site dominated by the shrubs Arctostaphylos patula, Ceanothus prostratus, C. velutinus, and Purshia tridentata, and a late-seral site dominated by mature Pinus. These sites were compared for …

Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley Apr 2002

Dealing With Fear And Depression In A 21st-Century Context, Carrie Maxwell Wrigley

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Therapy in the 21st century cannot be guided soley by attention to intra-psychic or intra-familial factors. As the surrounding social and cultural environment continues to become more unstable, threatening, and dangerous, fear and depression become increasingly common, reality-based responses. These reponses are not a surprise to those acquainted with ancient and modern scriptures, which predict times of unprecedented trouble with accompanying widespread terror and despair; and which also identifies an alternative, more healthful response to the context of our current social enviroment. Finally, it articulates what AMCAP and its individual members can do to ""public peace"" in these times of …

The Eros Of International Politics: Madame Chiang Kai-Shek And The Question Of The State In China, Chi-Yu Shih Apr 2002

The Eros Of International Politics: Madame Chiang Kai-Shek And The Question Of The State In China, Chi-Yu Shih

Comparative Civilizations Review

Madame Chiang Kai-shek presented an Asia-first strategy to the US Congress on February 18, 1943. Although her speech was critical of US strategy in ending WWII, she received enormous praise. This article examines how the American media reported her speech and concludes that the emotion her speech aroused in American society could be explained by her feminine appearance, her Americanized perspectives and her self-perceived role as a rescuer in America. Madame Chiang portrayed China as an about-to-be-Westernized society experiencing the threat of annihilation under Japan’s invasion. To save China was to save the hope of American civilization in Asia and …

Surfacing Splicing: A Method Of Quadrilateral Mesh Generation And Modification For Surfaces By Dual Creation And Manipulation, Benjamin Todd Grover Apr 2002

Surfacing Splicing: A Method Of Quadrilateral Mesh Generation And Modification For Surfaces By Dual Creation And Manipulation, Benjamin Todd Grover

Theses and Dissertations

The effective generation high quality quadrilateral surface meshes is an area of important research and development for the finite element community. Quadrilateral elements generally lead to more efficient and accurate finite results. In addition, some all hexahedral volume meshing algorithms are based on an initial quadrilateral mesh surface mesh that has specific connectivity requirements. This thesis presents a new and unique procedure named "Surfaced Splicing". Surface Splicing allows for the generation of all quadrilateral surface meshes as well as the ability to edit these meshes via the dual. The dual contains the same data as the mesh but, unlike the …

Microenterprise Development In The United States: Closing The Gap, William Burrus Apr 2002

Microenterprise Development In The United States: Closing The Gap, William Burrus

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

A challenge to United States microenterprise development is scale. After years of experience and learning, most programs still serve relatively few clients on an annual basis. Given the barriers to increasing scale and sustainability, we need strategies to achieve growth. This paper identifies strategies for growth in the field and identifies three areas of focus that are essential to increased scale and sustainability.

Probabilistic Record Linkage For Genealogical Research, John Lawson, David White, Brenda Price, Ryan Yamagata Apr 2002

Probabilistic Record Linkage For Genealogical Research, John Lawson, David White, Brenda Price, Ryan Yamagata

BYU Studies

With increased interest in family history research, there is a great need for improvement in procedures for generating genealogical information. One of the most time-consuming parts of the work is searching through records (such as civil records, church records, census records, immigration records, wills, deeds, and certificates, of births, marriages, and deaths) for information about an individual. When multiple records are searched, an individual may appear numerous times. Each of these occurrences may contain identical or unique information about the individual. More complete information (such as pedigree) can be constructed for an individual by combining or linking all the records …

"Ja, Ich Habe Einen Deutschen Pass, Aber Ich Bin Doch Schwarz": Black German Confrontations With Blackness, Valerie M.C.E. Dube-Luvai Mar 2002

"Ja, Ich Habe Einen Deutschen Pass, Aber Ich Bin Doch Schwarz": Black German Confrontations With Blackness, Valerie M.C.E. Dube-Luvai

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the complexities of constructing a German identity as a black German. The recent emergence of Germany's black minority group was generally perceived as an opportunity to reevaluate Germanness as it has been understood in the past. However, this thesis shows that a reevaluation of Germanness lacks full support because traditional German ideals of racial superiority continue to exist in the consciousness of all Germans - black and white. This suggests that theories of racial superiority continue to determine belonging and identity construction in Germany. Above all, the presence of Western racial ideology in black German identity construction …

A Comparison Of Coalescent Estimation Software, Kristen Piggott Shepherd Mar 2002

A Comparison Of Coalescent Estimation Software, Kristen Piggott Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations

Coalescent theory is a method often used by population geneticists in order to make inferences about evolutionary parameters. The coalescent is a stochastic model that approximates ancestral relationships among genes. An understanding of the coalescent pattern of a sample of sequences, along with some knowledge of the mutations that have occurred, provides information about the evolutionary forces that have acted on the population. Processes such as migration, recombination, variable population size, or natural selection are the forces that affect the genealogies and lead to genetic variability in a sample. Coalescent theory provides a statistical description of the variability in the …
