Applications Of Search Theory To Coordinated Searching By Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Steven R. Hansen Apr 2007

Applications Of Search Theory To Coordinated Searching By Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Steven R. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Concepts in optimal search theory have been used in human-based aerial search since World War II. This thesis addresses the technical and theoretical issues necessary to apply this crucial theory to search path planning for Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (SUAVs). A typical search often requires that more than one target be located. Accordingly, a method is presented to locate multiple targets in three dimensions, as well as to differentiate between them. However, significant error can be present when locating targets from an airborne platform, and the idea of target quality is also introduced as a way to describe the reliability …

Contributions Of Family Leisure To Family Functioning Among Families That Include Children With Developmental Disabilities, Dorthy Clara Hornberger Dodd Apr 2007

Contributions Of Family Leisure To Family Functioning Among Families That Include Children With Developmental Disabilities, Dorthy Clara Hornberger Dodd

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family leisure involvement and family functioning among families that include children with developmental disabilities. The sample consisted of 154 families (154 parents and 62 youth). Data were analyzed from the parent, youth, and family perspective. The Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP) was used to measure family leisure involvement. FACES II was used to measure family functioning. A scale based upon the definition, classification, and systems of support manual of the American Association on Mental Retardation adapted by Dyches was used to measure the level of support needed by the …

Eating, Substance Use, And Body Image: A Comparison Of Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint College Age Females, Monika Sandberg, Diane L. Spangler Apr 2007

Eating, Substance Use, And Body Image: A Comparison Of Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint College Age Females, Monika Sandberg, Diane L. Spangler

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This study examined differences between Latter-day Saint (LDS) and non-Latter-day-Saint (non-LDS) females in desire to engage in substance use and eating behaviors in response to negative emotion. Additionally, differences between LDS and non-LDS females regarding body image, as well as body image differences between LDS females residing inside Utah and outside Utah, were explored. Findings suggested that non-LDS females were more likely to experience increased urges to use substances in response to negative emotion than LDS females, consistent with LDS doctrine teaching the aviodance of substance use. LDS females also did not appear to substitute LDS-sanctioned eating behaviors for substance …

Family Issues In Time Of War: A Chaplain's Perspective, Michael D. Howard, Ruth P. Cox Apr 2007

Family Issues In Time Of War: A Chaplain's Perspective, Michael D. Howard, Ruth P. Cox

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Military families experience many stressors that are similar to those of non-military families and others that are more common to military life. Stressors which are more common to military families include enduring forced periods of lengthly separation, raising a family with only one parent for extended periods, experiencing frequent forced moves, and being away from the extended family. In addition to these basic stressors are those associated with the harsh reality of war: personal injury, disability, and death. For these families, the future is very uncertain, as is the possibility of never seeing one another again. This paper explores the …

The Fifth Wave: Cultural And Commercial Viability (2000-Present), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton Apr 2007

The Fifth Wave: Cultural And Commercial Viability (2000-Present), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton

BYU Studies

The Fifth Wave of Mormon cinema is the current period, in which a culturally robust and commercially vibrant new art form is beginning to emerge. Its most obvious manifestation is in the stream of Mormon-themed theatrical feature films, produced independently of the Church, made by and for Latter-day Saints. Richard Dutcher’s much-celebrated God’s Army, released in March 2000, made him widely recognized as the father of this new movement in Mormon film, but his groundbreaking work actually marks a return to the past. The LDS filmmakers of the First Wave also sought to create 35mm films to be distributed …

Establishing Shot: The Scope Of Mormon Cinema, Gideon O. Burton Apr 2007

Establishing Shot: The Scope Of Mormon Cinema, Gideon O. Burton

BYU Studies

Gideon O. Burton introduces the special issue dedicated to Mormon cinema by giving a brief overview of the other articles appearing in the issue and clarifying what Mormon cinema is: any film made by or about Mormons, from Church-produced movies used for teaching and training to YouTube segments; from student-made films to theatrically released movies. He also discusses the importance of film criticism in creating a quality Mormon cinema tradition.

A History Of Mormon Cinema, Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton Apr 2007

A History Of Mormon Cinema, Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton

BYU Studies

LDS Church members who heralded Richard Dutcher's 2000 film, God's Army, as the first Mormon movie may not have known about similar public sentiments expressed about previous landmark Mormon movies, like the 1940 motion picture Brigham Young. The history of Mormon cinema stretches back to the early 1900s and is divided into five "waves." The authors examine the waves in detail, discussing each era's Church-made films, Mormon-themed films made by independent filmmakers, mainstream films made by Latter-day Saints, and films that depicted Mormons—accurately or not. The authors also touch on developing trends in how film is made, criticized, …

The First Wave: The Clawson Brothers And The New Frontier (1905-1929), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton Apr 2007

The First Wave: The Clawson Brothers And The New Frontier (1905-1929), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton

BYU Studies

In calling this era the new frontier, there is some danger of forgetting the large industrial organizations that supported film’s early pioneers. The analogy, however, is of some use here not only because of Utah’s recent pioneer past at the turn of the century—only a generation removed—but primarily because of the proud, isolationist stance LDS filmmakers were forced to assume in response to the mainstream industry’s attacks on their religion. With no political redress or recourse to non-Mormon allies, the Latter-day Saints were left to their own devices to depict what they saw as the glories of their scriptures, forebears, …

The Second Wave: Home Cinema (1929-1953), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton Apr 2007

The Second Wave: Home Cinema (1929-1953), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton

BYU Studies

The Second Wave differed from the First in various respects. For instance, by the 1930s the global film industry was well past its primitive pioneer era, and, within Mormonism, the increased sophistication of Second Wave films reflects this progress. In addition, technical advances (principally sound, but also color) renewed enthusiasm about the medium, both generally and among the Latter-day Saints. While this optimism did propel institutional and independent Mormon filmmaking toward some major projects, the decade of the 1930s—and to a lesser extent the 1940s— has generally been described for its lack of Mormon film production. Such a perception, however, …

The Fourth Wave: The Mass Media Era (1974-2000), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton Apr 2007

The Fourth Wave: The Mass Media Era (1974-2000), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton

BYU Studies

The Fourth Wave deserves to be known as the Mass Media Era for at least three reasons. First, it was the first period dominated by video technology and various media besides traditional film; though I shall continue to use the term filmmaking, the majority of productions were now distributed electronically, even if they did not originate that way. Second, because of electronic distribution and the inexpensiveness and ubiquity of video, this era was marked by an incredibly wide dissemination of film compared with previous eras. Television, VHS, and satellite broadcasts revolutionized distribution by making obsolete the exhibition of an …

Finding An Audience, Paying The Bills: Competing Business Models In Mormon Cinema, Eric Samuelsen Apr 2007

Finding An Audience, Paying The Bills: Competing Business Models In Mormon Cinema, Eric Samuelsen

BYU Studies

The Hollywood business model most filmmakers employ involves both a production company and a film studio. The two entities make a deal, and the production company shoots the movie before the studio promotes and sells the movie. Hence, films that don't attract the support of a studio often can't be advertised and distributed as widely. In many cases, the movies can't even be made without a studio's financial backing. In the Mormon film industry, some filmmakers have employed the usual Hollywood business model. Others have created their own studios to market their films, like Halestorm, and some filmmakers bypass the …

A Manifesto For "Fit For The Kingdom": Dean Duncan's Proposal For A Mormon Documentary Series, Gideon O. Burton

BYU Studies

Developments in Mormon cinema in the last few years have taken place not only with popular narrative feature films intended for theatrical exhibition. Independently produced documentary film, which actually has a stronger tradition within Mormonism, has also been growing. One group, a coalition of Brigham Young University faculty and students and independent filmmakers led by Dean Duncan of BYU’s Theatre and Media Arts Department, has been creating a series of documentary films entitled “Fit for the Kingdom.”

Seeking After The Good In Art, Drama, Film, And Literature, Travis T. Anderson Apr 2007

Seeking After The Good In Art, Drama, Film, And Literature, Travis T. Anderson

BYU Studies

Not long ago, kids in tow, I burst in unannounced on my parents and found them absorbed in some ubiquitous TV sitcom. While we peeled off our coats and the kids started chasing each other around the house, I jokingly chided my mom for wasting her time on such mindless drivel. In reply, she playfully denounced my elitist taste and defended her show as “good, wholesome entertainment.” Well, it may indeed have been entertaining. And being a show that originally aired back in the early eighties and even then was aimed at an older demographic, it was relatively free of …

Active Spectatorship: Spiritual Dimensions Of Film, Sharon Swenson

BYU Studies

Menacing music signals something ominous. My three-year-old grandson, Gavin, looks up at me, and we hug each other closer under the quilt, shivering in anticipation. In the background is . . . something . . . and it’s getting closer and closer. What seemed like something small and close by is really something large and far away and getting closer by the second. Squeeze tighter; Gavin glances up at me and giggles, but I remain serious and calm, preparing for whatever might come. It’s a whale! Zooming toward us!

The Role Of Phosducin-Like Protein As A Co-Chaperone With The Cytosolic Chaperonin Complex In Assembly Of The G Protein Βγ Subunit Dimer, Paul Jayson Ludtke Mar 2007

The Role Of Phosducin-Like Protein As A Co-Chaperone With The Cytosolic Chaperonin Complex In Assembly Of The G Protein Βγ Subunit Dimer, Paul Jayson Ludtke

Theses and Dissertations

Phosducin-like protein (PhLP) has been shown to interact with the cytosolic chaperonin containing TCP-1 (CCT), and the βγ subunit dimer of heterotrimeric G proteins (Gβγ). Here we provide details obtained from cryo-electron microscopic and biochemical studies on the structure of the complex between the cytosolic chaperonin CCT and PhLP. Binding of PhLP to CCT occurs through only one of the two chaperonin rings, making multiple contacts with CCT through both its N- and C-terminal domains. In addition, we show that PhLP acts as a co-chaperonin along with CCT in mediating the assembly of the G protein βγ subunit and that …

Optimizing Product Variant Placement To Satisfy Market Demand, Jonathan Roger Parkinson Mar 2007

Optimizing Product Variant Placement To Satisfy Market Demand, Jonathan Roger Parkinson

Theses and Dissertations

Many companies use product families in order to offer product variants that appeal to different market segments while minimizing costs. Because the market demand is generally not uniform for all possible product variants, during the design phase a decision must be made as to which variants will be offered and how many. This thesis presents a new approach to solving this problem. The product is defined in terms of performance parameters. The market demand is captured in a preference model and applied to these parameters in order to represent the total potential market. The number and placement of the product …

Potential Contribution Of Respiration By Anabrus Simplex (Mormon Crickets) To Net Co2 Exchange In Three Great Basin Ecosystems, A. Joshua Leffler, Michael S. Peek, Larry Hipps, Sasha Ivans, Ronald J. Ryel, Martyn M. Caldwell Mar 2007

Potential Contribution Of Respiration By Anabrus Simplex (Mormon Crickets) To Net Co2 Exchange In Three Great Basin Ecosystems, A. Joshua Leffler, Michael S. Peek, Larry Hipps, Sasha Ivans, Ronald J. Ryel, Martyn M. Caldwell

Western North American Naturalist

Disturbance events can significantly influence net CO2 exchange (NCE) in ecosystems. High densities of Anabrus simplex (Mormon crickets) periodically afflict large areas of the western USA; their sheer numbers could make them a significant source of CO2. We modeled cricket respiration at the ecosystem level using air and body temperatures and insect gas exchange measurements. Cricket CO2 efflux values were compared to ecosystem CO2 flux from eddy covariance measurements in 3 Great Basin ecosystems: a juniper woodland, a sagebrush shrubland, and a crested wheatgrass pasture. Mean respiration from Mormon crickets was 0.96 g CO2 …

Food And Habitat Relationships Of Claassenia Sabulosa (Plecoptera: Perlidae) In The Upper Colorado River, Colorado, Richard A. Thorp, Jeremy B. Monroe, Emily C. Thorp, Todd Wellnitz, N. Leroy Poff Mar 2007

Food And Habitat Relationships Of Claassenia Sabulosa (Plecoptera: Perlidae) In The Upper Colorado River, Colorado, Richard A. Thorp, Jeremy B. Monroe, Emily C. Thorp, Todd Wellnitz, N. Leroy Poff

Western North American Naturalist

Streambed surveys were conducted along the upper Colorado River, Colorado, to describe the distributions of Claassenia sabulosa larvae in relation to current speed and to determine their diets. We also addressed diel feeding periodicity by sampling during both day and night. Claassenia sabulosa was more abundant in riffle habitats than in runs. A positive relationship existed between C. sabulosa abundance and stream current, with larval size increasing with current speed. Chironomidae, Baetidae, and Simulidae collectively accounted for 93% of the prey found in stonefly guts; however, these categories were not consumed equally by all C. sabulosa. Smaller C. sabulosa …

The Niemann-Pick Type C2 Protein Loads Isoglobotrihexosylceramide Onto Cd1d Molecules And Contributes To The Thymic Selection Of Nkt Cells, Paul B. Savage, Nicolas Schrantz, Yuval Sagiv, Yang Liu, Albert Bendelac, Luc Teyton

Faculty Publications

The Niemann-Pick type C2 (NPC2) protein is a small, soluble, lysosomal protein important for cholesterol and sphingolipid transport in the lysosome. The immunological phenotype of NPC2-deficient mice was limited to an impaired thymic selection of Valpha 14 natural killer T cells (NKT cells) and a subsequent reduction of NKT cells in the periphery. The remaining NKT cells failed to produce measurable quantities of interferon-gamma in vivo and in vitro after activation with alpha-galactosylceramide. In addition, thymocytes and splenocytes from NPC2-deficient mice were poor presenters of endogenous and exogenous lipids to CD1d-restricted Valpha 14 hybridoma cells. Importantly, we determined that similar …

Culturally Adapted Mental Health Treatments: A Meta-Analysis, Derek Griner Mar 2007

Culturally Adapted Mental Health Treatments: A Meta-Analysis, Derek Griner

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years psychologists have increased awareness and concern regarding the quality of mental health services provided to people of color. For several reasons clients of color often find traditional mental health services foreign or unhelpful. To help diminish obstacles faced by clients of color, several authors have advocated traditional mental health treatments be modified to better match clients' cultural contexts. Researchers have also begun investigating outcomes associated with culturally modified mental health treatments, often contrasting them with traditional mental health services. Recently numerous studies containing empirical data have been published. To date there has been no attempt to review …
