Needle Biomass Equations For Singleleaf Pinyon On The Virginia Range, Nevada, T. R. De Rocher, R. J. Tausch Apr 1994

Needle Biomass Equations For Singleleaf Pinyon On The Virginia Range, Nevada, T. R. De Rocher, R. J. Tausch

Great Basin Naturalist

Foliar biomass of singleleaf pinyon (Pinus monophylla Torr. & Frem.) was estimated on the Virginia Mountains, Nevada, based on the easily measured dimensions of crown volume and sapwood area. Leaf biomass estimation techniques used in other studies of pinyon where total leaf biomass was collected were supported. Both sapwood area (cm2) and crown volume, calculated as one-half of an ellipsoid (m3), were found to be significantly related to total dry weight needle mass (g). Best predictive equations for crown volume were obtained with nonlinear regression analysis. A previously reported two-part relationship based on tree size …

Population Structure And Ecological Effects Of The Crayfish Pacifastacus Leniusculus In Castle Lake, California, James J. Elser, Christopher Junge, Charles R. Goldman Apr 1994

Population Structure And Ecological Effects Of The Crayfish Pacifastacus Leniusculus In Castle Lake, California, James J. Elser, Christopher Junge, Charles R. Goldman

Great Basin Naturalist

The recent appearance of the "California crayfish," Pacifastacus leniusculus, in Castle Lake, California, and interest in its potential impacts on the lake ecosystem provided motivation for a study of the population structure and habitat use of this species and its effects on aquatic macrophytes. Mark-recapture studies indicated that the total number of adult (3+ yr or older) crayfish in the lake was ca 10,100 individuals, yielding an estimate of lakewide crayfish density in preferred crayfish habitats of 0.13 adults m−2. Using mean body mass of individuals, we estimated that ambient biomass density was 5.9 g m …

Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy Apr 1994

Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy

Theses and Dissertations

This research details a point of reference to understand two case studies of cooperation that developed among lower-level, or non policy-making bureaucrats during times of conflict or war. Using components of game theory, I propose that when an international conflictual relationship occurs that resembles an iterated Prisoners' Dilemma, and that meets certain conditions, tacit cooperation can emerge. Tacit cooperation consists of illicit or implied cooperation that is not sanctioned at the national policy level.

In this research I develop a framework of tacit cooperation, relying heavily upon Robert Axelrod's theory of evolutionary cooperation. With the framework in place, I then …

A Multi-Chip Module Implementation Of A Neural Network, Tony R. Martinez, George L. Rudolph, Linton G. Salmon, Matthew G. Stout Mar 1994

A Multi-Chip Module Implementation Of A Neural Network, Tony R. Martinez, George L. Rudolph, Linton G. Salmon, Matthew G. Stout

Faculty Publications

The requirement for dense interconnect in artificial neural network systems has led researchers to seek high-density interconnect technologies. This paper reports an implementation using multi-chip modules (MCMs) as the interconnect medium. The specific system described is a self-organizing, parallel, and dynamic learning model which requires a dense interconnect technology for effective implementation; this requirement is fulfilled by exploiting MCM technology. The ideas presented in this paper regarding an MCM implementation of artificial neural networks are versatile and can be adapted to apply to other neural network and connectionist models.

Proof Of Correctness For Asocs Aa3 Networks, J. Cory Barker, Tony R. Martinez Mar 1994

Proof Of Correctness For Asocs Aa3 Networks, J. Cory Barker, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes adaptive algorithm 3 (AA3) of adaptive self-organizing concurrent systems (ASOCS) and proves that AA3 correctly fulfills the rules presented. Several different models for ASOCS have been developed. AA3 uses a distributed mechanism for implementing rules so correctness is not obvious. An ASOCS is an adaptive network composed of many simple computing elements operating in parallel. An ASOCS operates in one of two modes: learning and processing. In learning mode, rules are presented to the ASOCS and incorporated in a self-organizing fashion. In processing mode, the ASOCS acts as a parallel hardware circuit that performs the function defined …

What's In A Name? Book Of Mormon Language, Names, And [Metonymic] Naming, Gordon C. Thomasson Jan 1994

What's In A Name? Book Of Mormon Language, Names, And [Metonymic] Naming, Gordon C. Thomasson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Anthropological perspectives lend insight on names and on the social and literary function of names in principle and in the Book of Mormon. A discussion of the general function of names in kinship; secret names; and names, ritual, and rites of passage precedes a Latter-day Saint perspective. Names and metonymy are used symbolically. Examples include biblical and Book of Mormon metonymic naming, nomenclature, and taxonomy. Biblical laws of purity form the foundation for a pattern of metonymic associations with the name Lamanite, where the dichotomy of clean/unclean is used to give name to social alienation and pollution.

Text And Context, Daniel C. Peterson

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Brent Lee Metcalfe's New Approaches to the Book of Mormon: Explorations in Critical Methodology was well received by those not favorable to the traditional truth claims of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. No Articles indicating an ancient origin for the Book of Mormon were included. The book basically supports the assumption that the Book of Mormon isn't historical. Historians always bring their own perspective (including biases and agendas) into their histories.

Active Latter-Day Saint Working Mothers: Their Effect On Their Daughters' Future Plans, Nissa C. Bengtson Allred

Theses and Dissertations

This research looks at the effect employed active LDS mothers have on their daughters' future plans for education, career, marriage, and children. Mothers' educational level, type of employment, and daughters' attachment to the LDS church were taken into consideration. It was found that a majority of daughters are definite in their plans for education, career, marriage, and children regardless of the employment status of their mother. Daughters of employed LDS mothers are more definite in their plans for a career than daughters of unemployed LDS mothers. No effect was found for mothers' employment on daughters' future plans for college, marriage, …

Predicting Missionary Service, Bert Burraston Jan 1994

Predicting Missionary Service, Bert Burraston

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to test the antecedents of religiosity on religious commitment. Specifically, what dimensions of religiosity predict if a young-adult Mormon male will serve a mission. Both Logistic Regression and LISREL were used to examine data from the Young Men's Study, in order to predict Mission. The six variables, Religious Intention, Public Religiosity, Religious Negativism, Family Structure, Tithing, and Smoking were found to have direct effects on missionary service. Four more variables were found to have important indirect effects on Mission. The four variables are Parents Church Attendance, Home Religious Observances, Agree With Parents' Values, and …

Presenting Italian Comparative And Superlative Forms Of Adjectives To College L2 Beginners, Ilona Klein Jan 1994

Presenting Italian Comparative And Superlative Forms Of Adjectives To College L2 Beginners, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

This study treats the necessity to de-emphasize the focus on grammar teaching alone in L2, and to introduce methods which are not teacher-centered, so as to enable students to interact more among each other.

By using comparative and superlative forms of adjectives – but in reality using a sequence of teaching techniques that could be applied to other grammatical situations – this article presents the use of sea shells as a visual and tactile aid which allows students to shift their L2 efforts from an abstract notion to a concrete usage.

This study offers a tool to attempt a balance …

Oscillator Strengths For Fe Ii Transitions At 224.918 And 226.008 Nanometers, Scott D. Bergeson, K. L. Mullman, J. E. Lawler

Faculty Publications

We report accurate experimental absorption oscillator strengths (f-values) for transitions out of the ground level of Fe II to the z4Do7/2 and z4Do9/2 levels at 224.918 and 226.008 nm (air wavelengths) to be 0.00182(14) and 0.00244(19), respectively. The number in parenthesis is the uncertainty in the last digits. These two lines are important for studying Fe abundances and grain depletions in the interstellar medium. These f-values are determined by combining emission branching fractions with radiative lifetimes. Branching fractions are measured using classical spectroradiometry on an optically thin source. Radiative lifetimes are from …

Association Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies With Cattle Point Attractants In The Northern Great Plains, Daniel S. Licht, Kenneth D. Sanchez Dec 1993

Association Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies With Cattle Point Attractants In The Northern Great Plains, Daniel S. Licht, Kenneth D. Sanchez

Great Basin Naturalist

In October 1991 we recorded all black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies and cattle points in a 1248-km2 study area in southwest North Dakota and southeast Montana. Cattle point attractants were defined as fabricated water tanks and long-term supplemental feed sites. We found that a significant number of prairie dog colonies encompassed or adjoined cattle point attractants (p < .001). Prairie dog colonies associated with cattle point attractants were a mean distance of 1.0 km from the next nearest town. The existence of cattle point attractants may encourage prairie dog colonization. Conversely, refraining from using long-term cattle point attractants can discourage prairie dog colonization.

The Founding Of The Harvard-Yenching Library, Eugene W. Wu

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Three separate events, spanning almost half a century, made possible the creation of an East Asian collection at Harvard which was to develop into a preeminent library for East Asian research in the West. They were the introduction of Chinese in Harvard's curriculum in 1879, the decision of A. Kaiming Chiu to come to Harvard for graduate study in 1925, and the establishment of the Harvard-Yenching Institute in 1928.

The Importance Of Using Multiple Styles Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson Nov 1993

The Importance Of Using Multiple Styles Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson

Faculty Publications

There are many ways for a learning system to generalize from training set data. There is likely no one style of generalization which will solve all problems better than any other style, for different styles will work better on some applications than others. This paper presents several styles of generalization and uses them to suggest that a collection of such styles can provide more accurate generalization than any one style by itself. Empirical results of generalizing on several real-world applications are given, and comparisons are made on the generalization accuracy of each style of generalization. The empirical results support the …

Towards A General Distributed Platform For Learning And Generalization, Brent W. Hughes, Tony R. Martinez Nov 1993

Towards A General Distributed Platform For Learning And Generalization, Brent W. Hughes, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

Different learning models employ different styles of generalization on novel inputs. This paper proposes the need for multiple styles of generalization to support a broad application base. The Priority ASOCS model (Priority Adaptive Self-organizing Concurrent System) is overviewed and presented as a potential platform which can support multiple generalization styles. PASOCS is an adaptive network composed of many simple computing elements operating asynchronously and in parallel. The PASOCS can operate in either a data processing mode or a learning mode. During data processing mode, the system acts as a parallel hardware circuit. During leaming mode, the PASOCS incorporates rules, with …

Simulation Modeling Of American Marten (Martes Americana) Populations: Vulnerability To Extinction, Robert C. Lacy, Tim W. Clark Sep 1993

Simulation Modeling Of American Marten (Martes Americana) Populations: Vulnerability To Extinction, Robert C. Lacy, Tim W. Clark

Great Basin Naturalist

American marten (Martes americana) are medium-sized mammalian carnivores inhabiting forest communities across northern North America. Martens are susceptible to local extinction from habitat alterations, trapping, and other factors. We (RCL) developed a population model called VORTEX to estimate extinction probabilities for marten populations as a management tool. The model permits managers to simulate various levels of timber harvesting, commercial trapping, and other factors to estimate their effects on marten populations. This paper describes this model and illustrates its benefits by using marten data from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem of northwestern Wyoming. Results are preliminary. Populations of 50 and …

Rsvp: A New Resource Reservation Protocol, Daniel Zappala, Stephen Deering, Deborah Estrin, Scott Shenker, Lixia Zhang

Faculty Publications

The current Internet architecture, embodied in the Internet Protocol (IP) network protocol, offers a very simple service model: point-to-point best-effort service. In recent years, several new classes of distributed applications have been developed, such as remote video, multimedia conferencing, data fusion, visualization, and virtual reality. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Internet’s primitive service model is inadequate for these new applications. This inadequacy stems from the failure of the point-to-point best-effort service model to address two application requirements. First, many of these applications are very sensitive to the quality of service their packets receive. For a network to deliver …

My life's main line of work has been as an industrial maintenance electrician, though in early years I tried my hand as blacksmith's helper, arc and acetylene welder, coal mine laborer, lumber jack, farm hand, fruit picker, and other miscellaneous work. But it was as a trained electrician that I got my greatest joy in working especially in training men in my line of work. In my old years now, I have given much thought to what have been some very challenging jobs I had encountered as I struggled onward in this best of all possible. worlds, and these are· …

Large Amplitude L=1 Coherent Structures In Non-Neutral Plasmas Confined In A Cylindrical Trap, Ross L. Spencer, Grant W. Mason Jun 1993

Large Amplitude L=1 Coherent Structures In Non-Neutral Plasmas Confined In A Cylindrical Trap, Ross L. Spencer, Grant W. Mason

Faculty Publications

The computation of l= 1 coherent structures in non-neutral plasmas with arbitrary density profiles and for large displacements of the plasma from the symmetry axis of a confining cylindrical trap is described. As the structures are displaced from the axis, they revolve about the symmetry axis with a frequency that typically increases with displacement. The plasma also is distorted into an approximately elliptical shape. The frequency shifts and the eccentricities as a function of displacement, plasma size, and the shape of the density profile are both computed numerically and calculated analytically. The results are shown to be consistent with data …
