A Multidisciplinary Approach To Reservoir Characterization Of The Coastal Entrada Erg-Margin Gas Play, Utah, Will D. Monn Mar 2006

A Multidisciplinary Approach To Reservoir Characterization Of The Coastal Entrada Erg-Margin Gas Play, Utah, Will D. Monn

Theses and Dissertations

World-class outcrops of an outermost erg-margin can be observed within the Middle Jurassic Entrada Sandstone near Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. These erg-margin deposits contain isolated reservoir quality sandstone bodies that transition into a muddy tidal flat facies. These high quality reservoirs are dominated by eolian-influenced facies interbedded with sandy interdune facies. They are sealed vertically by muddy and silty facies of associated tidal flat deposits that act as excellent stratigraphic traps in the subsurface. A variety of approaches were used to characterize these Entrada erg-margin reservoirs including: annotated panoramas of outcrops, measured sections, scintillometer measurements of field sections, facies …

Unresolved Problems Involving The Hydrogeology And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Wasatch Plateau Based On Mapping Of The Wattis 7.5 Minute Quadrangle, Carbon And Emery Counties, Utah: Insights Gained From A New Geologic Map, David O. Alderks Mar 2006

Alderks

Theses and Dissertations

The Wattis 7.5 Minute Quadrangle is located in central Utah, in the transition zone between the Basin and Range province and the Colorado plateau. Two small grabens, located in the quadrangle, are the easternmost evidence of Basin and Range faulting. Sedimentary units exposed are mainly Cretaceous in age and deposited in the Western Cretaceous Interior Seaway. This area is of economical importance due to its large coal deposits, coal bed methane, and groundwater. The Wattis Quadrangle provided an ideal opportunity to test, at a small scale, the applicability of a new groundwater model for stratified mountainous terranes. Water samples had …

The Violation Of Bell's Inequality In A Deterministic But Nonlocal Model, Stephanie Allred Magleby Mar 2006

The Violation Of Bell's Inequality In A Deterministic But Nonlocal Model, Stephanie Allred Magleby

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the violation of Bell's Inequality through the use of nonlocal measurement schemes as encapsulated in a quasi-deterministic toy model. This toy model, called the Q Box, is reminiscent of Mermin's Box in that it describes a system that appears to be deterministic yet produces the statistics of a quantum type system. [1] The workings of the Q Box are detailed both as a thought experiment and as a computer simulation. Nonlocal measurement protocols similar to those which generate a violation of Bell's Inequality in the Q Box are also applied to Mermin's Box, with comparable results. [1] …

Surface Realization Using A Featurized Syntactic Statistical Language Model, Thomas L. Packer Mar 2006

Surface Realization Using A Featurized Syntactic Statistical Language Model, Thomas L. Packer

Theses and Dissertations

An important challenge in natural language surface realization is the generation of grammatical sentences from incomplete sentence plans. Realization can be broken into a two-stage process consisting of an over-generating rule-based module followed by a ranker that outputs the most probable candidate sentence based on a statistical language model. Thus far, an n-gram language model has been evaluated in this context. More sophisticated syntactic knowledge is expected to improve such a ranker. In this thesis, a new language model based on featurized functional dependency syntax was developed and evaluated. Generation accuracies and cross-entropy for the new language model did not …

Design And Measurement Of A Real-Time Peer-To-Peer Game, Michael D. Simonsen Mar 2006

Design And Measurement Of A Real-Time Peer-To-Peer Game, Michael D. Simonsen

Theses and Dissertations

Currently, multiplayer online games use the client-server architecture which is very resource intensive, expensive, and time consuming. Peer-to-peer protocols are a less resource intensive alternative to the client-server model. We implement a peer-to-peer protocol called NEO in a multiplayer game and run experiments in a lab setting and over the Internet. These experiments show us that NEO is able to run a smooth playable game, with low unused updates and low location error. This happens as long as the arrival delay is long enough to allow updates to arrive in the given time limit and the round length is short …

Modeling The Performance Of A Baseball Player's Offensive Production, Michael Ross Smith Mar 2006

Modeling The Performance Of A Baseball Player's Offensive Production, Michael Ross Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This project addresses the problem of comparing the offensive abilities of players from different eras in Major League Baseball (MLB). We will study players from the perspective of an overall offensive summary statistic that is highly linked with scoring runs, or the Berry Value. We will build an additive model to estimate the innate ability of the player, the effect of the relative level of competition of each season, and the effect of age on performance using piecewise age curves. Using Hierarchical Bayes methodology with Gibbs sampling, we model each of these effects for each individual. The results of the …

Learning Real-Time A* Path Planner For Unmanned Air Vehicle Target Sensing, Jason K. Howlett, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael A. Goodrich Mar 2006

Learning Real-Time A* Path Planner For Unmanned Air Vehicle Target Sensing, Jason K. Howlett, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael A. Goodrich

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a path planner for sensing closely-spaced targets from a fixed-wing unmanned air vehicle (UAV) having a specified sensor footprint. The planner is based on the learning real-time A* (LRTA*) search algorithm and produces dynamically feasible paths that accomplish the sensing objectives in the shortest possible distance. A tree of candidate paths that span the area of interest is created by assembling primitive turn and straight sections of a specified step size in a sequential fashion from the starting position of the UAV. An LRTA* search of the tree produces feasible paths any time during its execution and …

Variation Analysis Of Involute Spline Tooth Contact, Brian J. De Caires Feb 2006

Variation Analysis Of Involute Spline Tooth Contact, Brian J. De Caires

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to provide an in-depth understanding of tooth engagement in splined couplings based on variations in clearances between mating teeth. It is standard practice to assume that 25-50% of the total spline teeth in a coupling are engaged due to variations from manufacture. Based on the assumed number of teeth engaged, the load capability of a splined coupling is determined. However, due to the variations in tooth geometry from manufacuture, the number of teeth actually engaged is dependent on the applied load and the tooth errors. The variations result in sequential tooth engagement with increasing …

Measurement, Characterization, And Source Apportionment Of The Major Chemical Components Of Fine Particulate Material, Including Semi-Volatile Species, Brett D. Grover Feb 2006

Measurement, Characterization, And Source Apportionment Of The Major Chemical Components Of Fine Particulate Material, Including Semi-Volatile Species, Brett D. Grover

Theses and Dissertations

The promulgation of revised standards for atmospheric fine particles (PM2.5) by the US EPA has sparked renewed interest in the ability to accurately measure and characterize suspended atmospheric particulate matter. Semi-volatile material (SVM), consisting of ammonium nitrate and semi-volatile organic material (SVOM), is not accurately measured by EPA accepted methods such as the Federal reference method (FRM) or Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM). However, SVM is often a major fraction of urban aerosols. Recent advances in atmospheric sampling instrumentation allowed for the semi-continuous characterization of urban PM2.5, including SVM. The Filter Dynamic Measurement System (FDMS) was shown to measure total …

Compact Solid-State Laser Source For 1s-2s Spectroscopy In Atomic Hydrogen, Scott D. Bergeson, N. Kolachevsky, J. Alnis, T. W. Hansch

Faculty Publications

We demonstrate a compact solid-state laser source for high-resolution two-photon spectroscopy of the 1S-2S transition in atomic hydrogen. The source emits up to 20 mW at 243 nm and consists of a 972 nm diode laser, a tapered amplifier, and two doubling stages. The diode laser is actively stabilized to a high-finesse cavity. We compare the new source to the stable 486 nm dye laser used in previous experiments and record 1S-2S spectra using both systems. With the solid-state laser system, we demonstrate a resolution of the hydrogen spectrometer of 6×10^11, which is promising for a number of high-precision measurements …

Finding The Radial Parallel Temperature Profile In A Non-Neutral Plasma Using Equilibrium Calculations On Experimental Data, Grant W. Hart, Bryan G. Peterson Feb 2006

Finding The Radial Parallel Temperature Profile In A Non-Neutral Plasma Using Equilibrium Calculations On Experimental Data, Grant W. Hart, Bryan G. Peterson

Faculty Publications

In 1992, Eggleston et al. [D. L. Eggleston et al., Phys. Fluids B 4, 3432 (1992)] reported on a technique for measuring the radial temperature profile in a pure-electron plasma confined in a Malmberg-Penning trap by partially dumping the plasma onto a charge collector at the end of the trap. For short plasmas and short confining rings, the assumptions in their paper are violated and a more general calculation is needed. This paper presents a variation of the standard equilibrium calculation to find the temperature profile of a pure-electron plasma. Eggleston's shortcut "evaporation" temperature method is found to require a …

Using Augmented Virtuality To Improve Human-Robot Interactions, Curtis W. Nielsen Feb 2006

Using Augmented Virtuality To Improve Human-Robot Interactions, Curtis W. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

Mobile robots can be used in situations and environments that are distant from an operator. In order for an operator to control a robot effectively he or she requires an understanding of the environment and situation around the robot. Since the robot is at a remote distant from the operator and cannot be directly observed, the information necessary for an operator to develop an understanding or awareness of the robot's situation comes from the user interface. The usefulness of the interface depends on the manner in which the information from the remote environment is presented. Conventional interfaces for interacting with …

Characterization, Functionalization And Applications Of Alkyl Monolayers On Silicon Surfaces, Guilin Jiang Feb 2006

Characterization, Functionalization And Applications Of Alkyl Monolayers On Silicon Surfaces, Guilin Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

Investigations were performed on the stability, mechanism of formation and an application of alkyl monolayers chemomechanically prepared on silicon surfaces. A new method of surface modification, laser-activation modification of surfaces (LAMS), and multivariate analyses of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) images of LAMS spots were also reported. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other data show that alkyl monolayers prepared by scribing silicon under 1-iodoalkanes and 1-alkenes were stable over extended periods of time to air, water, a boiling acid and Al Ka X-rays. The stability is attributed to direct Si-C bonding in the monolayers. The observation that the oxygen …

A Propensity For Genius: That Something Special About Fritz Zwicky (1898 - 1974), John Charles Mannone Feb 2006

A Propensity For Genius: That Something Special About Fritz Zwicky (1898 - 1974), John Charles Mannone

Swiss American Historical Society Review

It is difficult to write just a few words about a man who was so great. It is even more difficult to try to capture the nuances of his character, including his propensity for genius as well as his eccentric behavior edging the abrasive as much as the funny, the scope of his contributions, the size of his heart, and the impact on society that the distinguished physicist, Fritz Zwicky (1898- 1974), has made. So I am not going to try to serve that injustice, rather I will construct a collage, which are cameos of his life and accomplishments. In …

Joseph Smith And The Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Robert J. Matthews Jan 2006

Joseph Smith And The Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Robert J. Matthews

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Royal Skousen’s most significant contribution to Book of Mormon scholarship, this paper states, is in openly and systematically detailing the thousands of variants that occur across two manuscripts and twenty editions and showing that these variations do not affect the message or validity of the book as a witness of Jesus Christ. Skousen’s work also offers new insights into the process of translating and publishing the Book of Mormon. Though the work of translation appears to have involved a number of different methods, we can nevertheless be sure that the Book of Mormon was translated by the “gift and power …

Fuel-Nox Formation During Low-Grade Fuel Combustion In A Swirling-Flow Burner, Chunyang Wu Jan 2006

Fuel-Nox Formation During Low-Grade Fuel Combustion In A Swirling-Flow Burner, Chunyang Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Insufficient knowledge of fireside behavior in the near-burner region during biomass combustion is one of major factors preventing widespread use of this renewable fuel in pulverized coal power plants. The current research is aimed to investigate the impact of biomass cofiring on NO formation in the near-burner region through interpretation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions and data collected from a series of biomass tests in a pilot-scale (0.2 MW), swirling flow burner. Two-dimensional gas species mole fraction data were collected with state-of-theart instruments from nine experiments, composing one herbaceous biomass (straw), one woody biomass (sawdust), a low sulfur sub-bituminous …

A Framework For An Implantable Wireless Pressure And Volume Sensor Focusing On The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Shunt Failure In Hydrocephalus Patients, Donald Monte Wichern Jan 2006

A Framework For An Implantable Wireless Pressure And Volume Sensor Focusing On The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Shunt Failure In Hydrocephalus Patients, Donald Monte Wichern

Theses and Dissertations

The framework for a permanently implantable wireless compliance sensor was developed and validated using laboratory experiments. The proposed sensor would measure the intracranial pressure and fluid volume in the brain and return this information to a monitoring device. The designed sensor received power remotely from the monitoring device negating the need for an implanted power source. Impedance measurement estimation techniques were suggested, studied and applied to the compliance sensing system. A new impedance measurement technique, accounting for multiple variability in the domain, was developed. An extensive simulation environment was designed and used to develop the laboratory experiments and hardware. The …

A User-Centric Tabular Multi-Column Sorting Interface For Intact Transposition Of Columnar Data, David B. L. Miles Jan 2006

A User-Centric Tabular Multi-Column Sorting Interface For Intact Transposition Of Columnar Data, David B. L. Miles

Theses and Dissertations

Many usability features designed in software applications are not procedurally intuitive for software users. A good example of software usability involves tabular sorting in a spreadsheet. Single-column sorting, activated with a mouse click to a column header or toolbar button, often produces rearranged listings that reduce cognitive organization beyond the sorted column. Multi-column sorting, generated through menu-driven processes, provides derived organization, however, locating feature options through menu-based systems can be confusing. A means to overcome this confusion is prioritized selection of database arrays issued to columnar displays for the purpose of intact transposition of data. This is a unique process …

Lattice-Based Structures For Studying Percolation In Two-Dimensional Grain Networks, Brent L. Adams, John A. Basinger, David T. Fullwood Jan 2006

Lattice-Based Structures For Studying Percolation In Two-Dimensional Grain Networks, Brent L. Adams, John A. Basinger, David T. Fullwood

Faculty Publications

This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC program of the National Science Foundation under DMR-0079996. The applicability of standard lattice percolation models to a random 2-D grain structure is explored. A random network based on the triangle lattice is proposed as a more appropriate model, and results in a higher percolation threshold (0.711 compared with 0.653 for the standard hexagonal lattice). The triple junction constraint inherent in grain boundary structures is subsequently applied to the new network. This results in a lowering of the percolation threshold to 0.686; this is opposite to its effect on the standard hexagonal lattice. …

Estimation Of Aquifer Transmissivity Using Kriging, Artificial Neural Network, And Neuro-Fuzzy Models Jan 2006

Estimation Of Aquifer Transmissivity Using Kriging, Artificial Neural Network, And Neuro-Fuzzy Models

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

In interpolation of groundwater properties such as transmissivity, due to the unknown distributed values of the variables and heterogenity, the best and the unbiased aspects are frequently difficult to obtain. Therefore, applying a modern technique is necessary to obtain a real estimation of transmissivity. To gain the transmissivity values as an input data in groundwater modelling, the ordinary log kriging method has been used. In this study, the efficiency of the Adaptive Network based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), artificial neural networks and ordinary kriging are investigated for interpolation of transmissivity in an unconfined aquifer. The results indicate that ANFIS model …

Rainfall-Runoff Modeling For An Experimental Watershed Of Western Greece Using Extended Time-Area Method And Gis Jan 2006

Rainfall-Runoff Modeling For An Experimental Watershed Of Western Greece Using Extended Time-Area Method And Gis

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

In this study, an effort was made to simulate the transformation of rainfall into runoff, in a small experimental mountainous-forested watershed in western Greece. The main objective was the production of flood hydrographs by calculating average flow velocities (inside and outside the stream network). The usefulness of the flow velocities lies in using them in other ungauged small-forested watersheds that have similar geomorphological and hydrological characteristics. The meteorological and hydrological data of four storm events were obtained from the corresponding stations that are located near and at the outlet of the watershed, respectively. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology was used …

Estimating Limiting Nutrient Loadings In An Interacting Surface And Ground Water Basin Jan 2006

Estimating Limiting Nutrient Loadings In An Interacting Surface And Ground Water Basin

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Watershed management requires the determination of both point and non-point sources of pollution within a watershed. The primary non-point source pollutants in a typical watershed are nutrients (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus), sediment, and pesticides. In the Snake River Basin, in Idaho, nutrients from non-point sources (primarily agricultural) are delivered to streams via storm water and irrigation runoff. However, the objectives of this study were to estimate the phosphorus loading from different sources in the Snake River Basin due to storm water events, to calculate the total nitrogen/phosphorus (TN/TP) ratios for land uses, and to compare and a precipitation runoff model …

Erosion Risk Assessment Using An Empirical Model Of Pacific South West Inter Agency Committee Method For Zargeh Watershed, Iran Jan 2006

Erosion Risk Assessment Using An Empirical Model Of Pacific South West Inter Agency Committee Method For Zargeh Watershed, Iran

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Watershed degradation due to soil erosion and sedimentation is one of the major environmental problems in Iran. In addressing the issue, a study on the validity of an empirical model of Pacific South West Inter Agency Committee Method (MPSIAC) to predict annual average sediment yield to Zargeh watershed was undertaken. The MPSIAC method incorporates nine environmental factors that contribute to sediment yield of the watershed namely: surface geology, soil, climate, runoff, topography, ground cover, land use, channel and upland erosion. Open-source Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) was used to facilitate the spatial interpolation of the nine model factors and …
