Development Of An Adaptive Equalization Algorithm Using Acoustic Energy Density, Panu Tapani Puikkonen Apr 2009

Development Of An Adaptive Equalization Algorithm Using Acoustic Energy Density, Panu Tapani Puikkonen

Theses and Dissertations

Sound pressure equalization of audio signals using digital signal processors has been a subject of ongoing study for many years. The traditional approach is to equalize sound at a point in a listening environment, but because of its specific dependence on the room frequency response between a source and receiver position, this equalization generally causes the spectral response to worsen significantly at other locations in the room. This work presents both a time-invariant and a time-varying implementation of an adaptive acoustic energy density equalization filter for a one-dimensional sound field. Energy density equalization addresses the aforementioned challenge and others that …

Synthesis Of 2,4,5-Triaminocyclohexane Carboxylic Acid As A Novel 2-Deoxystreptamine Mimetic, Sarah Elizabeth Roberts Apr 2009

Synthesis Of 2,4,5-Triaminocyclohexane Carboxylic Acid As A Novel 2-Deoxystreptamine Mimetic, Sarah Elizabeth Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

RNAs have become increasingly recognized as possible drug targets due to their involvement in important biochemical functions, as well as their unique but well-defined structures. Recently published crystal structures depict the binding of a series of aminoglycosides- or more specifically- 2-deoxystretamine (2-DOS), the most preserved central scaffold of aminoglycosides, to a conserved 5'-GU-3'region on their target RNAs. A novel unnatural γ-amino acid, 1, has been synthesized using 2-deoxystreptamine as a template through structure-based rational design. The unnatural amino acid has been designed to replace a glycosidic linkage with an amide bond, which may limit the promiscuous binding characteristics of aminoglycosides …

Progressive Spatial Networks, Samuel Curren Apr 2009

Progressive Spatial Networks, Samuel Curren

Theses and Dissertations

Digital street and trail maps are typically represented by an interconnected network of path segments. These spatial networks are used in map creation, route planning, and geo-location. Consumer GPS devices have become popular as a method of collecting data for use in spatial networks. Existing methods for creating spatial networks either require extensive hand editing or use inefficient algorithms that require re-computation when adding new data to an existing network. I demonstrate a method for creating and maintaining spatial networks that allows for incremental updates without complete re-computation. I also demonstrate how spatial limits on data set growth allows networks …

Xprime: A Method Incorporating Expert Prior Information Into Motif Exploration, Rachel Lynn Poulsen Apr 2009

Xprime: A Method Incorporating Expert Prior Information Into Motif Exploration, Rachel Lynn Poulsen

Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary goals of active research in molecular biology is to better understand the process of transcription regulation. An important objective in understanding transcription is identifying transcription factors that directly regulate target genes. Identifying these transcription factors is a key step toward eliminating genetic diseases or disease susceptibilities that are encoded inside deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). There is much uncertainty and variation associated with transcription factor binding sites, requiring these sites to be represented stochastically. Although typically each transcription factor prefers to bind to a specific DNA word, it can bind to different variations of that DNA word. In …

State Of Secure Application Development For 802.15.4, Janell Armstrong Apr 2009

State Of Secure Application Development For 802.15.4, Janell Armstrong

Theses and Dissertations

A wireless sensor network consists of small, limited-resource embedded systems exchanging environment data and activating controls. These networks can be deployed in hostile environments to monitor wildlife habitats, implemented in factories to locate mobile equipment, and installed in home environments to optimize the use of utilities. Each of these scenarios requires network security to protect the network data. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is designed for WSN communication, yet the standard states that it is not responsible for defining the initialization, distribution, updating, or management of network public keys. Individuals seeking to research security topics will find that there are many …

Role Of Molecular Chaperones In G Protein B5-Regulator Of G Protein Signaling Dimer Assembly And G Protein By Dimer Specificity, Alyson Cerny Howlett Apr 2009

Role Of Molecular Chaperones In G Protein B5-Regulator Of G Protein Signaling Dimer Assembly And G Protein By Dimer Specificity, Alyson Cerny Howlett

Theses and Dissertations

In order for G protein signaling to occur, the G protein heterotrimer must be assembled from its nascent polypeptides. The most difficult step in this process is the formation of the Gβγ dimer from the free subunits since both are unstable in the absence of the other. Recent studies have shown that phosducin-like protein (PhLP1) works as a co-chaperone with the cytosolic chaperonin complex (CCT) to fold Gβ and mediate its interaction with Gγ. However, these studies did not address questions concerning the scope of PhLP1 and CCT-mediated Gβγ assembly, which are important questions given that there are four Gβs …

Shaping Byu: The Presidential Administration And Legacy Of Benjamin Cluff Jr., Brian Q. Cannon Apr 2009

Shaping Byu: The Presidential Administration And Legacy Of Benjamin Cluff Jr., Brian Q. Cannon

BYU Studies

Benjamin Cluff Jr. has been called BYU's third president, but in reality he was the first president of Brigham Young University; his two predecessors presided over Brigham Young Academy, a secondary school that became a degree-conferring university under Cluff's leadership. Cluff raised BYU's academic standards by attending eastern schools and encouraging faculty to do the same. He was not opposed to hiring credentialed non-LDS faculty, and he aimed to garner more respect for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by educating students and future missionaries. To the same end, he led an expedition to Latin America in hopes …

Artistry And Aesthetics In Contemporary Mormon And Iranian Film, Travis T. Anderson Apr 2009

Artistry And Aesthetics In Contemporary Mormon And Iranian Film, Travis T. Anderson

BYU Studies

Almost from their inception, cinematic media and technologies have been accepted and appropriated with surprising enthusiasm by Iranians and Mormons alike. Both cultures appear to have embraced cinema as a natural outgrowth of their lively and longstanding appreciation for art and family-oriented entertainment in general. The author finds that the artistic progress and quality of Mormon cinema as of 2009 has thus far, with few exceptions, fallen short of its potential, while Iranian film artists have made an astonishing number of spiritually profound, culturally insightful, and cinematically sophisticated films despite having formidable obstacles. The author encourages Mormon filmmakers to attain …

Impact Of Spherical Probe Scattering On Estimation Of Acoustic Vector Quantities. (A), Curtis P. Wiederhold, Kent L. Gee, Derek C. Thomas, Scott D. Sommerfeldt, Jonathan D. Blotter

Faculty Publications

Multimicrophone probes are often used to measure energy-based acoustical quantities. In some cases, these probes consist of microphones mounted on the surface of a sphere, which, due to the high level of symmetry, permits scattering effects to be better characterized. Scattering of a plane wave incident on a rigid sphere has been modeled to observe how particle velocity and intensity calculations are affected by the presence of the sphere. These effects have been investigated for the traditional "finite-difference" method and a recently developed "wave vector" estimation method. In the computer model, 3-D surface plots were made showing the calculated error …

Test Case Generation Using Model Checking For Software Components Deployed Into New Environments, Tonglaga Bao, Michael D. Jones Apr 2009

Test Case Generation Using Model Checking For Software Components Deployed Into New Environments, Tonglaga Bao, Michael D. Jones

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we show how to generate test cases for a component deployed into a new software environment. This problem is important for software engineers who need to deploy a component into a new environment. Most existing model based testing approaches generate models from high level specifications. This leaves a semantic gap between the high level specification and the actual implementation. Furthermore, the high level specification often needs to be manually translated into a model, which is a time consuming and error prone process. We propose generating the model automatically by abstracting the source code of the component using …

Topics In Analytic Number Theory, Kevin James Powell Mar 2009

Topics In Analytic Number Theory, Kevin James Powell

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis is in two parts. The first part is the paper “The Distribution of k-free integers” that my advisor, Dr. Roger Baker, and I submitted in February 2009. The reader will note that I have inserted additional commentary and explanations which appear in smaller text. Dr. Baker and I improved the asymptotic formula for the number of k-free integers less than x by taking advantage of exponential sum techniques developed since the 1980's. Both of us made substantial contributions to the paper. I discovered the exponent in the error term for the cases k=3,4, and worked the case k=3 …

Verifying Abstract Components Within Concrete Software Environments, Tonglaga Bao Mar 2009

Verifying Abstract Components Within Concrete Software Environments, Tonglaga Bao

Theses and Dissertations

In order to model check a software component which is not a standalone program, we need a model of the software which completes the program. This problem is important for software engineers who need to deploy an existing component into a new environment. The model is typically generated by abstracting the surrounding software environment in which the component will be executed. However, abstracting the surrounding software is a difficult and error-prone task, particularly when the surrounding software is a complex software artifact which can not be easily abstracted. In this dissertation, we present a new approach to the problem by …

Functionalization, Characterization, And Applications Of Diamond Particles, Modification Of Planar Silicon, And Chemoetrics Analysis Of Ms Data, Li Yang Mar 2009

Functionalization, Characterization, And Applications Of Diamond Particles, Modification Of Planar Silicon, And Chemoetrics Analysis Of Ms Data, Li Yang

Theses and Dissertations

In spite of the stablility (lack of reactivity) of diamond powder, I have developed a method for tethering alkyl chains and polymers to deuterium/hydrogen-terminated diamond. One method is through ether linkages via thermolysis of di-tert-amyl peroxide (DTAP). This reaction with DTAP has also been applied to grow polymers on the diamond surface. The other method is atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which was applied to grow polystyrene at the surface of diamond. Both polystyrene-modified diamond and sulfonated polystyrene-modified diamond can be prepared by either method, and can be used for solid phase extraction. Diamond stationary phases are stable under basic …

The First Attachment And Post-Functionalization Of Polybutadiene And Thio-Click Functionalized Polybutadiene On H-Terminated Si(111), Todd Devere Wickard Mar 2009

The First Attachment And Post-Functionalization Of Polybutadiene And Thio-Click Functionalized Polybutadiene On H-Terminated Si(111), Todd Devere Wickard

Theses and Dissertations

I report the attachment of polymers with pendant vinyl groups to hydrogen-terminated silicon(111) (Si(111)-H) under mild conditions. 1,2-addition polybutadiene (Mw 3200-3500) was attached to Si(111)-H at room temperature with visible light. I also report the partial functionalization, in solution, of 1,2-addition polybutadiene with various thiols using thiol-click chemistry. These compounds bind to Si(111)-H via visible light activation. The partially functionalized polybutadienes allow further functionalization at the surface through unreacted carbon-carbon double bonds. Surfaces were characterized with contact angle goniometry, spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Combined Visible And Infrared Video For Use In Wilderness Search And Rescue, Nathan D. Rasmussen Mar 2009

Combined Visible And Infrared Video For Use In Wilderness Search And Rescue, Nathan D. Rasmussen

Theses and Dissertations

Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (mUAVs) have the potential to be a great asset to Wilderness Search and Rescue groups by providing a bird's eye view of the search area. These vehicles can carry a variety of sensors to better understand the world below. This paper proposes using both Infrared (IR) and Visible Spectrum cameras on a mUAV for Wilderness Search and Rescue. It details a method for combining the color and heat information from these two cameras into a single fused display to reduce needed screen space for remote field use. To align the video frames for fusion, a method …

An Investigative Study Of The Difficulties Experienced By Engineers Transitioning Into Leadership/Management Positions, Joseph Alan Wilde Mar 2009

An Investigative Study Of The Difficulties Experienced By Engineers Transitioning Into Leadership/Management Positions, Joseph Alan Wilde

Theses and Dissertations

The traditional engineering career has been defined by two career paths: technical and managerial. An entry level engineer typically did not elect his/her career path until at least five years into a career. This meant that only a portion of engineers needed to learn management and leadership skills and then usually not until in the professional environment. Since this career distinction was not made until years into an engineer's professional life universities were not developing leadership/management skills in their students. Times have changed. With the globalization of the economy, and the increased competition in the marketplace, companies have realized that …

Resonant Microwave Cavity For 8.5-12 Ghz Optically Detected Electron Spin Resonance With Simultaneous Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, John S. Colton, L. R. Wienkes Mar 2009

Resonant Microwave Cavity For 8.5-12 Ghz Optically Detected Electron Spin Resonance With Simultaneous Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, John S. Colton, L. R. Wienkes

Faculty Publications

We present a newly developed microwave resonant cavity for use in optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) experiments. The cylindrical quasi-TE 011 mode cavity is designed to fit in a 1 in. magnet bore to allow the sample to be optically accessed and to have an adjustable resonant frequency between 8.5 and 12 GHz. The cavity uses cylinders of high dielectric material, so-called "dielectric resonators," in a double-stacked configuration to determine the resonant frequency. Wires in a pseudo-Helmholtz configuration are incorporated into the cavity to provide frequencies for simultaneous nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The system was tested by measuring cavity absorption …

Behavior Of A Full-Scale Pile Cap With Loosely And Densely Compacted Clean Sand Backfill Under Cyclic And Dynamic Loadings, Colin Reuben Cummins Mar 2009

Behavior Of A Full-Scale Pile Cap With Loosely And Densely Compacted Clean Sand Backfill Under Cyclic And Dynamic Loadings, Colin Reuben Cummins

Theses and Dissertations

A series of lateral load tests were performed on a full-scale pile cap with three different backfill conditions, namely: with no backfill present, with densely compacted clean sand in place, and with loosely compacted clean sand in place. In addition to being displaced under a static loading, the pile cap was subjected to low frequency, small displacement loading cycles from load actuators and higher frequency, small displacement, dynamic loading cycles from an eccentric mass shaker. The passive earth pressure from the backfill was found to significantly increase the load capacity of the pile cap. At a displacement of about 46 …

Correlating Responses Of Portable Field Instruments Used For Testing Aggregate And Soil Pavement Layers, Wendy Melissa Thompson Mar 2009

Correlating Responses Of Portable Field Instruments Used For Testing Aggregate And Soil Pavement Layers, Wendy Melissa Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

This research examined correlations among the responses of five portable aggregate and soil testing devices, including the nuclear density gauge (NDG), dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), heavy Clegg impact soil tester (CIST), soil stiffness gauge (SSG), and portable falling-weight deflectometer (PFWD). Readings were analyzed from 41 project sites on treated and untreated base, subbase, and subgrade layers representing 15 different material types in Iowa, Louisiana, Utah, and Wyoming. Analyses of the data revealed statistically significant correlations for all six of the possible two-way comparisons involving the DCP, CIST, SSG, and PFWD, and a nomograph was developed for correlating responses among these …

Hammering Square Pegs Into Round Holes: International Development And The Flawed Ontological Assumptions Of Modernity, Justin Micah Pack Mar 2009

Hammering Square Pegs Into Round Holes: International Development And The Flawed Ontological Assumptions Of Modernity, Justin Micah Pack

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the increase in awareness of the plight of the third world and NGOs attempting to deal with poverty, international development projects continue to be alarmingly hit and miss. The problematic effectiveness of international development has led to an intense theoretical debate seeking to examine what exactly leads some projects awry. These criticisms often focus on the fundamental assumptions that underlie international development projects and occasionally relate them to the epistemological and ontological assumptions of modernity. In this thesis, I use Heidegger and Nietzsche to deepen the criticism of the epistemological and ontological assumptions of modernity that in turn support …

The 20-Minute Genealogist: A Context-Preservation Metaphor For Assisted Family History Research, Charles D. Knutson, Jonathan Krein Mar 2009

The 20-Minute Genealogist: A Context-Preservation Metaphor For Assisted Family History Research, Charles D. Knutson, Jonathan Krein

Faculty Publications

What can you possibly do to be productive as a family history researcher in 20 minutes per week? Our studies suggest that currently the answer is, “Nothing.” In 20 minutes a would-be researcher can’t even remember what happened last week, let alone what they were planning to do next. The 20-Minute Genealogist is a powerful metaphor within which software solutions must consider context preservation as the fundamental domain of the system, thus freeing the researcher to do research while the software manages the tasks that computers do best. Two survey-based studies were conducted that indicate a significant disconnect between the …

Patrons Cataloging? The Role And Quality Of Patron Tagging In Item Description, William Lund, Allyson Washburn

Faculty Publications

With the advent of Web 2.0 technologies, user participation in the description and evaluation of content has come to the library. User tagging is almost a given in applications such as Del.icio.us, Flickr, and LibraryThing. The question is whether tagging provided by users with their own motivations is better in some sense then descriptions provided by professionals. Is the tagging provided by the wisdom of the crowd a better description of an item?

Design Of A Continuous-Wave Synthetic Aperture Radar System With Analog Dechirp, Matthew C. Edwards Mar 2009

Design Of A Continuous-Wave Synthetic Aperture Radar System With Analog Dechirp, Matthew C. Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a design methodology for continuous wave (CW) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. The focus is on design considerations specific to small, low-power systems suitable for operation on small aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Well-known results which have been derived in other works, such as the radar equation, are explained in the context of low-power, CW systems. Additionally, design issues unique to CW SAR are addressed and the results generalized. A method for controlling feedthrough between antennas is developed, and the resulting limitations on swath width are discussed. Methods are developed which allow an engineer to design …

A Comparison Of Mathematical Discourse In Online And Face-To-Face Environments, Shawn D. Broderick Mar 2009

A Comparison Of Mathematical Discourse In Online And Face-To-Face Environments, Shawn D. Broderick

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have been done on the impact of online mathematics courses. Most studies concluded that there is no significant difference in student success between online and face-to-face courses. However, most studies compared "traditional" online and face-to-face courses. Mathematics educators are advocating a shift from traditional courses to student-centered courses where students argue and defend the mathematics under the guidance of the teacher. Now, the differences in online and face-to-face student-centered mathematical courses merit a more in-depth investigation. This study characterized student mathematical discourse in online and face-to-face Calculus lab sections based off of a framework derived from an NCTM …

Alternating Links And Subdivision Rules, Brian Craig Rushton Mar 2009

Alternating Links And Subdivision Rules, Brian Craig Rushton

Theses and Dissertations

The study of geometric group theory has suggested several theorems related to subdivision tilings that have a natural hyperbolic structure. However, few examples exist. We construct subdivision tilings for the complement of every nonsingular, prime alternating link and all torus links, and explore some of their properties and applications. Several examples are exhibited with color coding of tiles.

Measuring Skill Importance In Women's Soccer And Volleyball, Michelle L. Allan Mar 2009

Measuring Skill Importance In Women's Soccer And Volleyball, Michelle L. Allan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how to measure skill importance for two sports: soccer and volleyball. A division I women's soccer team filmed each home game during a competitive season. Every defensive, dribbling, first touch, and passing skill was rated and recorded for each team. It was noted whether each sequence of plays led to a successful shot. A hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression model is implemented to determine how the performance of the skill affects the probability of a successful shot. A division I women's volleyball team rated each skill (serve, pass, set, etc.) and recorded rally …
