Part 1: Screening Of Thirty-One Medicinal Plant Species Against Herpes Simplex Virus, Acetone And Methanol Extracts From The Root Tissue Of Kalanchoe Pinnata Interferes With Hsv Types 1 And 2 Dna Replication And Early And Late Gene Expression Preventing The Spread Of Hsv In Vitro. Part 2: Professional Development Curriculum: Integrating Molecular Biology And Microbiology Into The Existing Secondary Biology Curricula, Mary Ruth Greer
Theses and Dissertations
PART 1: Thirty-one medicinal plant species from Hawaii, Morocco, and the Sonoran Desert, USA have been shown in past studies to be highly inhibitory to pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and certain cancer cell lines. However, none were tested for antiviral activity. Acetone and methanol extracts from these species were bio-assayed for antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV 1 and HSV 2) and for cytotoxicity to the Vero C1008 cell line. Extracts from these species were tested in vitro for antiviral activity using an immunoperoxidase mini-plaque reduction assay to detect viral structural protein synthesis. Sulforhodamine B and …
Classifying Sentence-Based Summaries Of Web Documents, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera
Classifying Sentence-Based Summaries Of Web Documents, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera
Faculty Publications
Text classification categorizes Web documents in large collections into predefined classes based on their contents. Unfortunately, the classification process can be time-consuming and users are still required to spend considerable amount of time scanning through the classified Web documents to identify the ones that satisfy their information needs. In solving this problem, we first introduce CorSum, an extractive single-document summarization approach, which is simple and effective in performing the summarization task, since it only relies on word similarity to generate high-quality summaries. Hereafter, we train a Naïve Bayes classifier on CorSum-generated summaries and verify the classification accuracy using the summaries …
Optimizing The Release And Methylation Of Bacterial Endospore Dipicolinic Acid, Aaron N. Nackos
Optimizing The Release And Methylation Of Bacterial Endospore Dipicolinic Acid, Aaron N. Nackos
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid, portable detection of biological threat agents such as Bacillus anthracis endospores (“spores”) is extremely important given the real and perceived threats of bioterrorism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an excellent general means for chemical detection, although special sample preparation and specialized equipment are required to employ GC-MS for detecting biological agents such as spores in the field. A GC sample introduction probe consisting of a helical wire that can be retracted inside a syringe needle, called a coiled wire filament (CWF), was employed as a simple, passively-heated means to introduce the mixture of spores plus reagents for thermochemolysis methylation …

The Enmeshment Of Five Worlds, 1710-1713: The Making Of New Bern In Southern Iroquoia, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
On September 29, 1710, a hundred and three people - among them their leader Christoph von Graffenried and his son Christoph jr. - arrived at a river the Tuscarora called Gow-ta-no, meaning "pine water." 1 When in 15 84 reconnoitering the coast between what his people named Cape Fear and Cape Lookout, the English captain Arthur Barlowe (?-?) called it Neus River, possibly derived from the name of the Neusiok people living at its mouth,.2 The newcomers were from Canton Bern, a leading member state of the Swiss Confederacy, and they intended to settle in a region located on the …

Mcc: A Runtime Verification Tool For Mcapi User Applications, Eric G. Mercer, Ganesh Gopalakrishnan, Jim Holt, Subodh Sharma
Faculty Publications
We present a dynamic verification tool MCC for Multicore Communication API applications – a new API for communication among cores. MCC systematically explores all relevant interleavings of an MCAPI application using a tailormade dynamic partial order reduction algorithm (DPOR). Our contributions are (i) a way to model the non-overtaking message matching relation underlying MCAPI calls with a high level algorithm to effect DPOR for MCAPI that controls the lower level details so that the intended executions happen at runtime; and (ii) a list of default safety properties that can be utilized in the process of verification. To our knowledge, this …

Chemalign: Biologically Relevant Multiple Sequence Alignment Using Physicochemical Properties, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Quinn O. Snell, David Mcclellan
Faculty Publications
We present a new algorithm, ChemAlign, that uses physicochemical properties and secondary structure elements to create biologically relevant multiple sequence alignments (MSAs). Additionally, we introduce the Physicochemical Property Difference (PPD) score for the evaluation of MSAs. This score is the normalized difference of physicochemical property values between a calculated and a reference alignment. It takes a step beyond sequence similarity and measures characteristics of the amino acids to provide a more biologically relevant metric. ChemAlign is able to produce more biologically correct alignments and can help to identify potential drug docking sites.

Isotopic Evaluation Of Carbon Dioxide In Soil Gas In Utah For A More Accurate Input Variable In Groundwater Age Determining Models, Rachelle Hart
Isotopic Evaluation Of Carbon Dioxide In Soil Gas In Utah For A More Accurate Input Variable In Groundwater Age Determining Models, Rachelle Hart
Theses and Dissertations
In order to achieve a more accurate input value for groundwater age determining models, δ13CVPDB values for soil gas were evaluated at 50 cm depths in locations throughout Utah in order to define correlations between δ13C and environmental parameters. 16 sites were chosen that exploited large changes in elevation and latitude which provided variations in climate, precipitation, plant community, etc. Gas samples were collected over 1-1½ years, and soil samples were collected at depth during installations. Field and laboratory studies were also used to evaluate CO2 and δ13C change with depth. It was discovered that in mountainous recharge areas, the …
Caddisfly (Trichoptera) Assemblages Along Major River Drainages In Arizona, Dean W. Blinn, David E. Ruiter
Caddisfly (Trichoptera) Assemblages Along Major River Drainages In Arizona, Dean W. Blinn, David E. Ruiter
Western North American Naturalist
Seventy-two caddisfly species in 36 genera and 15 families were collected along the Little Colorado, Verde, Gila, and Colorado rivers in Arizona. Brachycentrids, hydropsychids, limnephilids, and uenoids made up nearly 50% of the assemblage in forested sites above 2200 m. Hydropsychids, hydroptilids, and leptocerids made up 75% of the assemblage in grassland watersheds between 2200 and 1000 m, and 80% at sites below 1000 m in desert watersheds. Species richness averaged 16 at sites above 2200 m elevation, 7 between 2200 and 1000 m, and 3 below 1000 m. H′ diversity was typically >3 at sites above 2200 m and <2.5 below 2200 m. Each river had distinct faunas likely due to isolation of drainages across semiarid landscapes. Low Sørensen similarity values were measured for caddisfly assemblages in the highly regulated Colorado River and the other 3 rivers. Only 17 species were collected at 14 sites along 700 km of the Colorado River. Indicator caddisfly species are provided for altered and less disturbed drainages. We added 7 species not previously reported in Arizona for a total of 154 caddisfly species in the state. We provide a baseline of caddisfly indicators for monitoring changes in ecosystem health during the predicted long-term drought and population expansion in southwestern USA.
Development And Comparison Of Methods For Measuring Directional Sound Arrivals In Rooms, Brian Trevor Thornock
Development And Comparison Of Methods For Measuring Directional Sound Arrivals In Rooms, Brian Trevor Thornock
Theses and Dissertations
In room acoustics, the directional information of sound arrivals at a listening location can be used to diagnose the origins of problematic reflections so offending surfaces or other features can be properly treated. It can also be used for other purposes, including the study of psychoacoustic indicators. Many methods have been developed in the past to derive directional information, but despite their benefits, each has had significant drawbacks that have necessitated further research into their properties and development of an improved method. This thesis presents a review of past methods, their benefits and shortcomings. It discusses many theoretical and practical …

Most autonomous mobile agents operate in a highly constrained environment. Despite significant research, existing solutions are limited in their ability to handle heterogeneous constraints within highly dynamic or uncertain environments. This paper presents a novel maneuver selection technique suited for both 2D and 3D environments with highly dynamic maneuvering constraints and multiple mobile obstacles. Agents may have any arbitrary set of nonholonomic control variables; maneuvers can be constrained by a broad class of function inequalities, including time-dependent constraints involving nonlinear relationships between controlled and agent-state variables. The resulting algorithm has been implemented to run in real time using only a …

Touring Polygamous Utah With Elizabeth W. Kane, Winter 1872–1873, Lowell C. Bennion, Thomas R. Carter
BYU Studies
This article, originally a lecture given at Brigham Young University in 2009, was published as part of a special issue of BYU Studies featuring Thomas L. Kane. Although Kane was not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was an advocate for the Mormon cause and a trusted friend of Mormon leaders for almost forty years. Bennion and Carter consider the ideas presented by Elizabeth Kane, Thomas's wife, who expressed her dismay with plural marriage in her writings about her visit to Utah in 1872–73. The authors combine Elizabeth's views with their interest in Mormon …

Uav Intelligent Path Planning For Wilderness Search And Rescue, Michael A. Goodrich, Lanny Lin
Faculty Publications
In the priority search phase of Wilderness Search and Rescue, a probability distribution map is created. Areas with higher probabilities are searched first in order to find the missing person in the shortest expected time. When using a UAV to support search, the onboard video camera should cover as much of the important areas as possible within a set time. We explore several algorithms (with and without set destination) and describe some novel techniques in solving this problem and compare their performances against typical WiSAR scenarios. This problem is NP-hard, but our algorithms yield high quality solutions that approximate the …

Video sequences contain many cues that may be used to segment objects in them, such as color, gradient, color adjacency, shape, temporal coherence, camera and object motion, and easily-trackable points. This paper introduces LIVEcut, a novel method for interactively selecting objects in video sequences by extracting and leveraging as much of this information as possible. Using a graph-cut optimization framework, LIVEcut propagates the selection forward frame by frame, allowing the user to correct any mistakes along the way if needed. Enhanced methods of extracting many of the features are provided. In order to use the most accurate information from the …
Pore Size Characterization Of Monolithic Capillary Columns Using Capillary Flow Porometry, Yan Fang
Pore Size Characterization Of Monolithic Capillary Columns Using Capillary Flow Porometry, Yan Fang
Theses and Dissertations
A simple capillary flow porometer (CFP) was assembled for pore structure characterization of monolithic capillary liquid chromatography columns based on ASTM standard F316-86. Determination of differential pressures and flow rates through dry and wet samples provided the necessary information to determine the through-pore throat diameter, bubble point pore diameter, mean flow pore diameter, and pore distribution. Unlike measurements in bulk using traditional techniques to provide indirect information about the pore properties of monolithic columns, monoliths can be characterized in their original chromatographic forms with this system. The performance of the new CFP was first evaluated by characterizing the pore size …
Gas Phase Chiral Recognition, Characterization Of Porous Polymer Monolith Nanospray Ionization, And The Negative Mode Crafti Method Using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Nannan Fang
Theses and Dissertations
Our group has been studying chiral recognition in gas phase using mass spectrometry for more than 10 years. We are interested in gas phase studies of fundamental interactions because the gas phase avoids complications and masking effects that may arise upon solvation. Therefore, the results of gas phase experiments can be directly compared with those of high-level computational studies. In chapter 2, I studied the roles of hydrogen bonding and pi stacking in gas phase chiral recognition between aromatic crown molecules and aromatic amines. High affinity between host and guest doesn't necessarily result in better recognition. If the affinity is …
Guided Testing For Automatic Error Discovery In Concurrent Software, Neha Shyam Rungta
Guided Testing For Automatic Error Discovery In Concurrent Software, Neha Shyam Rungta
Theses and Dissertations
The quality and reliability of software systems, in terms of their functional correctness, critically relies on the effectiveness of the testing tools and techniques to detect errors in the system before deployment. A lack of testing tools for concurrent programs that systematically control thread scheduling choices has not allowed concurrent software development to keep abreast with hardware trends of multi-core and multi-processor technologies. This motivates a need for the development of systematic testing techniques that detect errors in concurrent programs. The work in this dissertation presents a potentially scalable technique that can be used to detect concurrency errors in production …

New Low-Complexity Equalizers For Offset Qpsk, Qiang Lei, Michael D. Rice
Faculty Publications
Reduced-complexity linear and decision-feedback equalizers for use with offset QPSK are described and analyzed. The analysis and simulations show that reduced-complexity equalizers have 1/4 the complexity and achieve this at a loss that depends on the channel. As an example, the loss for the “Proakis B” channel is 2.7 dB for the linear equalizer and 0.8 dB for the decision feedback equalizer.

Total Synthesis Of (-)-Acutumine, Fang Li
Total Synthesis Of (-)-Acutumine, Fang Li
Theses and Dissertations
Acutumine is a tetracyclic alkaloid isolated from the Asian vine Menispermum dauricum with selective T-cell cytotoxicity and antiamnestic properties. We have developed a total synthetic route to this congested alkaloid, during which we also found a novel, stereoselective radical-crossover reaction that combines an intramolecular radical conjugate addition with a subsequent enolate hydroxylation. Key features of this synthesis also include a reagent-controlled diastereoselective ketone allylation, an anionic oxy-Cope rearrangement to form a congested quaternary sterocenter, a pyridine-mediated selective ozonolysis, and a Lewis acid promoted Michael-type cyclization.

Kiwivault: Encryption Software For Portable Storage Devices, Trevor Bradshaw Florence
Theses and Dissertations
While many people use USB flash drives, most do not protect their stored documents. Solutions for protecting flash drives exist but inherently limit functionality found in unprotected drives such as portability, usability, and the ability to share documents between multiple people. In addition, other drawbacks are introduced such as the possibility of losing access to protected documents if a password is lost. Assuming protecting portable documents is important, in order for people to be willing to protect their documents they should be required to make as few sacrifices in functionality as possible. We introduce KiwiVault, a USB flash drive encryption …

Faculty And Student Perceptions Of The Effects Of Mid-Course Evaluations On Learning And Teaching, Whitney Ransom
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of mid-course evaluations on teaching and student learning. A mixed methods approach was used, combining faculty and student surveys, faculty interviews, debriefing sessions, and a comparison of mid-course evaluations scores with end-of-semester scores. Out of 510 section mean scores (128 sections) from faculty members who participated in the study, 352 section mean scores (88 sections, 69%) showed students' perceptions of their own learning improved between the time they completed the mid-course evaluation and the time they completed the end-of-course student rating survey. Results showed when faculty administered a mid-course evaluation, …
Scan-Based Near-Field Acoustical Holography On Partially Correlated Sources, Michael D. Gardner
Scan-Based Near-Field Acoustical Holography On Partially Correlated Sources, Michael D. Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Scan-based near-field acoustical holography (NAH) is applied to partially correlated sources. Partial field decomposition via the virtual coherence method is used to implement the scan-based NAH. The background and theory of these methods are developed. Multiple stationary reference microphones are required for the partial field decomposition. Guidelines for reference microphone placement in the literature thus far have been limited. Improved guidelines for reference microphones are given after the results of two sets of experiments. The first set involves discrete, partially correlated sources, both physical and numerical. The second set of experiments is strictly numerical and involves continuous sources. Fewer microphones …
Analysis Of Induced Vibrations In Fully-Developed Turbulent Pipe Flow Using A Coupled Les And Fea Approach, Thomas P. Shurtz
Analysis Of Induced Vibrations In Fully-Developed Turbulent Pipe Flow Using A Coupled Les And Fea Approach, Thomas P. Shurtz
Theses and Dissertations
Turbulent flow induced pipe vibration is a phenomenon that has been observed but not fully characterized. This thesis presents research involving numerical simulations that have been used to characterize pipe vibration resulting from fully developed turbulent flow. The vibration levels as indicated by: pipe surface displacement, velocity, and acceleration are characterized in terms of the parameters that exert influence. The influences of geometric and material properties of the pipe are investigated for pipe thickness in the range 1 to 8 mm at a diameter of 0.1015 m. The effects of pipe elastic modulus are explored from 3 to 200 GPa. …
Piezoresistive Models For Polysilicon With Bending Or Torsional Loads, Gerrit T. Larsen
Piezoresistive Models For Polysilicon With Bending Or Torsional Loads, Gerrit T. Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents new models for determining piezoresistive response in long, thin polysilicon beams with either axial and bending moment inducing loads or torsional loads. Microelectromechanical (MEMS) test devices and calibration methods for finding the piezoresistive coefficients are also presented for both loading conditions. For axial and bending moment inducing loads, if the piezoresistive coefficients are known, the Improved Piezoresistive Flexure Model (IPFM) is used to find the new resistance of a beam under stress. The IPFM first discretizes the beam into small volumes represented by resistors. The stress that each of these volumes experiences is calculated, and the stress …
