Performance Of Phase And Amplitude Gradient Estimator Method For Calculating Energy Quantities In A Plane-Wave Tube Environment, Daxton A. Hawks
Performance Of Phase And Amplitude Gradient Estimator Method For Calculating Energy Quantities In A Plane-Wave Tube Environment, Daxton A. Hawks
Student Works
Acoustic intensity, energy densities, and impedance are useful quantities when considering sound fields. Calculating these energy quantities relies on measurements of acoustic pressure and particle velocity. Pressure and particle velocity can be directly measured, but direct measurements of particle velocity are difficult to make, and are normally inaccurate. A more common and effective way to find particle velocity is to estimate it using pressure measurements from two closely-spaced microphones. The traditional way of estimating particle velocity is severely limited by frequency. The PAGE method, developed at Brigham Young University, extends the frequency bandwidth at which accurate estimations can be made. …
Preventing Oxidation Of Aluminum Films With Cadmium Of Zinc Barriers, Spencer B. Perry
Preventing Oxidation Of Aluminum Films With Cadmium Of Zinc Barriers, Spencer B. Perry
Student Works
The planned Large UV/Optical/Near-infrared Telescope (LUVOIR) is expected to launch sometime in the 2030s if NASA surveys recommend LUVOIR over several other projects in early developmental stages [1]. As the project title suggests, the proposed telescope would include large mirrors (between 8 and 16 meters) as part of the orbiting reflector telescope. My research focused on the preparation of aluminum mirrors with zinc or cadmium barrier layers that were designed to prevent oxidation of the aluminum.

Opportunities To Investigate Novel Stable P-Type Zno: Making Progress With The Asymmetric Dopant Problem, Davild Allred
Opportunities To Investigate Novel Stable P-Type Zno: Making Progress With The Asymmetric Dopant Problem, Davild Allred
BYU Research Development Office Research Networking Conference
For over 60 years p-type Wide-bandgap semiconductors have been a problem. ZnO has been described as a very desirable semiconductor materials.
How to make stable forms of moderate to heavily p-type semiconductors, For example, for zinc-oxide this elusive goal has been driven by the material’s desirable electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties.
The traditional approach seems unlikely to succeed due to compound stability and vapor pressure constraints on diffusional processes. Diffusion couples cannot be used to create long-term stable p-type zinc oxides.

Packing Sheet Materials Into Cylinders And Prisms Using Origami-Based Approaches, Jared Thomas Bruton
Packing Sheet Materials Into Cylinders And Prisms Using Origami-Based Approaches, Jared Thomas Bruton
Theses and Dissertations
Packing sheet materials into cylinders and prisms using Origami-based approaches (Soft Origami or traditional Origami) is of interest in fields where sheet materials need folded into cylinders or prisms. Fully-dense packing has application in fields where a sheet material is to be folded with minimal gaps into a cylinder or prism. Partially-dense packing is applicable to fields where gaps are required between packed surfaces or where hollow volumes are to be filled, such as in fluid filter design. Soft Origami is explored as a method for folding soft-sheet materials into fully-dense cylinders. Two fold patterns, the "flasher'' and the "inverted-cone …
A Visual Return-To-Home System For Gps-Denied Flight, Benjamin Paul Lewis
A Visual Return-To-Home System For Gps-Denied Flight, Benjamin Paul Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
Unmanned aerial vehicle technology is rapidly maturing. In recent years, the sight of hobbyist aircraft has become more common. Corporations and governments are also interested in using drone aircraft for applications such as package delivery, surveillance and communications. These autonomous UAV technologies demand robust systems that perform under any circumstances. Many UAV applications rely on GPS to obtain information about their location and velocity. However, the GPS system has known vulnerabilities, including environmental signal degradation, terrestrial or solar weather, or malicious attacks such as GPS spoofing. These conditions occur with enough frequency to cause concern. Without a GPS signal, the …
From Qualitative To Quantitative: Supporting Robot Understanding In Human-Interactive Path Planning, Daqing Yi
From Qualitative To Quantitative: Supporting Robot Understanding In Human-Interactive Path Planning, Daqing Yi
Theses and Dissertations
Improvements in robot autonomy are changing human-robot interaction from low-level manipulation to high-level task-based collaboration. When a robot can independently and autonomously executes tasks, a human in a human-robot team acts as a collaborator or task supervisor instead of a tele-operator. When applying this to planning paths for a robot's motion, it is very important that the supervisor's qualitative intent is translated into aquantitative model so that the robot can produce a desirable consequence. In robotic path planning, algorithms can transform a human's qualitative requirement into a robot's quantitative model so that the robot behavior satisfies the human's intent. In …
Position And Stiffness Control Of Inflatable Robotic Links Using Rotary Pneumatic Actuation, Charles Mansel Best
Position And Stiffness Control Of Inflatable Robotic Links Using Rotary Pneumatic Actuation, Charles Mansel Best
Theses and Dissertations
Inflatable robots with pneumatic actuation are naturally lightweight and compliant. Both of these characteristics make a robot of this type better suited for human environments where unintentional impacts will occur. The dynamics of an inflatable robot are complex and dynamic models that explicitly allow variable stiffness control have not been well developed. In this thesis, a dynamic model was developed for an antagonistic, pneumatically actuated joint with inflatable links. The antagonistic nature of the joint allows for the control of two states, primarily joint position and stiffness. First a model was developed to describe the position states. The model was used …
Comparing Efficacy Of Different Dynamic Models For Control Of Underdamped, Antagonistic, Pneumatically Actuated Soft Robots, Morgan Thomas Gillespie
Comparing Efficacy Of Different Dynamic Models For Control Of Underdamped, Antagonistic, Pneumatically Actuated Soft Robots, Morgan Thomas Gillespie
Theses and Dissertations
Research in soft robot hardware has led to the development of platforms that allow for safer performance when working in uncertain or dynamic environments. The potential of these platforms is limited by the lack of proper dynamic models to describe or controllers to operate them. A common difficulty associated with these soft robots is a representation for torque, the common electromechanical relation seen in motors does not apply. In this thesis, several different torque models are presented and used to construct linear state-space models. The control limitations on soft robots are induced by natural compliance inherent to the hardware. This …

Chiastic Structuring Of Large Texts: Second Nephi As A Case Study, Noel B. Reynolds
Chiastic Structuring Of Large Texts: Second Nephi As A Case Study, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
The experiment conducted in this paper has been the application of the principles of Hebrew rhetoric—as that has come to be understood by biblical scholars over the last half century—to the Book of Second Nephi, self-described as personally written by Nephi, who was educated in Jerusalem at the end of the 7th century BCE, a time and place where these principles are now thought by scholars to have been de rigeur. The experiment did not refute the hypothesis, but instead did produce a plausible division of the book into 13 sub-units that readily organize themselves chiastically as a whole. The …
Fire-Spotting Modelling And Parametrisation For Wild-Land Fires, Inderpreet Kaur, Gianni Pagnini
Fire-Spotting Modelling And Parametrisation For Wild-Land Fires, Inderpreet Kaur, Gianni Pagnini
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This article describes a mathematical formulation for simulating the effects of firebrands on the propagation of the wild-land fires. Among the different approaches available in literature, this formulation is defined in a way to provide a versatile approach for application to operational wildfire models. Most of the operational wildfire models like WRF-SFIRE and ForeFire model only the evolution of the fire-line according to the definition of the rate of spread, fuel characterisation and the average fire properties and concurrent atmospheric conditions. But this information is not enough to simulate the effects of turbulence and fire-spotting. The formulation presented here can …

Water Supply System Classification For Water Quality Improvement, Bruno Melo Brentan, Gustavo Meirelles Lima, Edevar Luvizotto Junior, Joaquín Izquierdo, Rafael Pérez-García
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Universal access to drinkable water is a constitutional right guaranteed in Brazil. However, not all cities in this country are able to supply the population with the expected quality. Important actions should be taken to improve the supply of drinkable water. To define a strategic plan for this purpose, classification tools can facilitate the design of plans, by grouping cities with similar quality conditions. During the last decades, neural network approaches have been used in environmental models, allowing more accurate representation of some complex systems. This work proposes the use of self-organizing maps (SOM’s) coupled with the k-means algorithm …
A Framework For Decision-Making In Cases Of Invasive Species, Peter A. Khaiter, Marina G. Erechtchoukova, Sina Roushan
A Framework For Decision-Making In Cases Of Invasive Species, Peter A. Khaiter, Marina G. Erechtchoukova, Sina Roushan
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Invasion of nonindigenous species is one of the most pressing global challenges, causing substantial environmental, economic and social harm. Invasion of alien species alters the composition, structure and functioning of invaded ecosystems as well as the services they generated before the invasion. Decisions about the management of invasive cases are inherently difficult because of the multifactorial and multiattribute scope of the problem. In particular, the resilience limits of invaded ecosystems to fully recover original, pre-invaded states remain unclear. To facilitate management efforts, decision-makers and environmental practitioners require a framework integrating relevant knowledge and acting as a supporting expert system. The …

Simulating Spatial Changes In Vegetation-Livestock Interactions Under Different Landscape Structures: A Multi-Agent System Applied To Agro-Pastoral Territories, Mamadou Sané, Jonathan Vayssières, Myriam Grillot, Alassane Bah, Alexandre Ickowicz
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Free-range and common-grazing ruminants play a major role in the functioning and the provision of ecosystem services by agro- and silvo-pastoral ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa. To assess how landscape structure affects the nature of environment-herd-services interactions, this paper describes a Multi-Agent System (MAS) that simulates daily herd movements in a dynamic environment. The model is used to study how the overall productivity of an agricultural territory is affected by the spatial organization of its different landscape units. The originality of this model lies in fine representation, in hourly time steps, of a herd’s movements and activities over the seasons depending …

A New Gpr Image Analysis Proposal Based On A Multi-Agent Approach And Properties Of Groups – Towards Automatic Interpretations, David Ayala-Cabreraa, Manuel Herrera, Joaquin Izquierdo, Rafael Pérez-García, Olivier Piller
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper proposes a new methodology to analyze images from subsoil surveys obtained by using ground penetrating radar (GPR) as a non-destructive method. The aim is to advance towards automatic GPR image interpretations. The main idea is to promote the inclusion of these non- destructive technologies as support in technical management in large-scale systems such as water distribution systems (WDSs). The methodology proposed in this paper uses pre-processing techniques based on a multi-agent approach and analysis of the properties of the obtained groups. In addition, a first classification (via perceptron) of the selected property in the groups is performed. The …

A Simple Integrated Assessment Approach To Global Change Simulation And Evaluation, K. B. Z. Ogutu, F. D’Andrea, M. Ghil
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
We further develop and study a Coupled Climate-Economy-Biosphere (CoCEB) model. This simple and highly idealized model constitutes the basis of our integrated assessment approach to simulating and evaluating global change. CoCEB is composed of a physical climate module, based on Earth’s energy balance, and an economy module that uses endogenous economic growth with physical and human capital accumulation. A biosphere model is likewise under study and will be coupled to the existing two modules. We concentrate on the interactions between the two subsystems: the effect of climate on the economy, via damage functions, and the effect of the economy on …

Profiling Residential Water Users’ Routines By Eigenbehavior Modelling, A. Cominola, A. Moro, L. Riva, M. Giuliani, A. Castelleti
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Developing effective demand-side management strategies is essential to meet future residential water demands, pursue water conservation, and reduce the costs for water utilities. The effectiveness of water demand management strategies relies on our understanding of water consumers’ behavior and their consumption habits and routines, which can be monitored through the deployment of smart metering technologies and the adoption of data analytics and machine learning techniques. This work contributes a novel modeling procedure, based on a combination of clustering and principal component analysis, which allows performing water users’ segmentation on the basis of their eigenbehaviors (i.e., recurrent water consumption behaviors) automatically …

Quantile Regression Ensemble For Summer Temperatures Time Series And Its Impact On Built Environment Studies, Manuel Herrera, Matthew Eames, Alfonso Ramallo-Gonzalez, Chunde Liu, David Coley
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The occurrence of heat waves, heavy rainfall, or drought periods have an increasing trend nowadays as consequence of Earths global warming. This seriously affects natural habitats and directly impacts on the human environment. Architects and engineers use different approaches to model reference and future weather conditions to achieve building designs that resilient and energy efficient. However, modelling extreme weather events within those future conditions is a relative few explored field. This paper introduces the analysis of regression models for summer temperature time series that facilitate the representation of those extreme events; this is based on upper and lower quantiles, instead …

Reconciling Information From Climate-Economic Model Ensembles, A. Shchiptsova, D. Kovalevsky, E. Rovenskaya
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
To date, no model building process can guarantee full representation of the complex climate-economic processes and narrow down the uncertainty associated with future climate projections. Multiple highly detailed models are developed by individual research groups to capture various known aspects of the climate processes. Normally, these models represent only a part of the climate-society system due to its complexity. On the other hand, a number of the simplified integrated assessment models (IAMs) have been put forward in the attempt to introduce the full causal loop between accumulated emissions, economy and climate, and study associated uncertainty. We present a simplified system …
