Ecological And Genetic Variation Among Populations Of Boechera Caeruleamontana Sp. Nov. (Brassicaceae) From Blue Mountain And Dinosaur National Monumentin Eastern Utah And Western Colorado, Melissa Snyder
Theses and Dissertations
Boechera is a large genus of flowering plants whose taxa are found primarily in North America. Boechera vivariensis (S.L. Welsh) W.A. Weber (the Park rockcress) is restricted to the Uintah Basin on Weber sandstone substrates in the vicinity of Dinosaur National Monument and Blue Mountain. The nomenclature of Park rockcress is significantly impacted by the discovery that the type collections of the taxon represent a rare, apomictic diploid resulting from the hybridization between B. thompsonii and an undescribed sexual diploid (to be called Boechera caeruleamontana sp. nov. Allphin and Windham). As a result, greater information is needed regarding how B. …

Hybrid State-Transactional Database For Product Lifecycle Management Features In Multi-Engineer Synchronous Heterogeneous Computer-Aided Design, Devin James Shumway
Hybrid State-Transactional Database For Product Lifecycle Management Features In Multi-Engineer Synchronous Heterogeneous Computer-Aided Design, Devin James Shumway
Theses and Dissertations
There are many different programs that can perform Computer Aided Design (CAD). In order for these programs to share data, file translations need to occur. These translations have typically been done by IGES and STEP files. With the work done at the BYU CAD Lab to create a multi-engineer synchronous heterogeneous CAD environment, these translation processes have become synchronous by using a server and a database to manage the data. However, this system stores part data in a database. The data in the database cannot be used in traditional Product Lifecycle Management systems. In order to remedy this, a new …
Weathering Sequence Of Young Basalts: A Case Study From Kohala, Hawaii, Kimberly Francis Sowards
Weathering Sequence Of Young Basalts: A Case Study From Kohala, Hawaii, Kimberly Francis Sowards
Theses and Dissertations
Exposed weathering profiles of a series of Pololu lava flows in Kohala, Hawaii are ideal for investigating the sequence of reactions/reaction pathways of weathered basalt. Weathering reactions for saprolites show mineral sequences that include feldspar → halloysite ± gibbsite + solutes; clinopyroxene → hematite + minor halloysite + solutes; olivine → hematite + solutes; magnetite → hematite or other Fe-oxides/hydroxides. However, the presence of smectite in four samples suggests that smectite-group clays may form as short lived intermediates at the base of the weathering profile. Regionally, on Kohala, soils and saprolites are dominated by halloysite with small quantities of other …

An R Function For The Estimation Of Trend Significance Under The Scaling Hypothesis- Application In Pet Parametric Annual Time Series, Aristoteles Tegos, Hristos Tyralis, Demetris Koutsoyiannis, Khaled Hamed
Open Water Journal
We present an R function for testing the trend significance of time series. The function calculates the trend significance using a modified Mann- Kendall test, which takes into account the well-known physical behavior of the Hurst-Kolmogorov dynamics. The function is tested in 10 stations in Greece, with approximately 50 years of PET data with the use of a recent parametric approach. A significant downward trend was detected in two stations. The R software is now suitable for extensive use in the several fields of the scientific community, allowing a physical consistent of a trend analysis.
Right Now Is The Wrong Time: And Other Considerations When Presenting Security Warnings, Brock Johanson, Bonnie Anderson
Right Now Is The Wrong Time: And Other Considerations When Presenting Security Warnings, Brock Johanson, Bonnie Anderson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Neuro Information Security (NeuroIS) focuses on the use of neurological measurements to improve the security of information systems. The BYU NeuroIS lab uses neurological tools and measurements to examine factors that affect security outcomes. Previous work has focused on various factors such as dual task interference (DTI), threat assessment, as well as factors such as habituation and generalization, which have become focus streams of research. The primary point of failure in most security related incidents tends to be users themselves. As such, anything that can be used to overcome neurobiological phenomenon such as those listed above can ultimately lead in …

We develop a multi-fluid model for a ternary polymer solution using the Rayleighian formalism of Doi and Onuki, and give an efficient pseudo-spectral method for solving both the diffusion and momentum equations that result. Subsequently, we find that the numerical simulation is capable of describing systems at the micron length-scale and easily reaches millisecond time-scales. In addition, we characterize the model thermodynamics and kinetics including the (i) phase behavior, (ii) structure of the interfaces, (iii) mutual diffusion coefficients, (iv) bulk spinodal decomposition kinetics with and without hydrodynamics and (v) spinodal decomposition in the presence of an interface with a non-solvent …

Fabrication Of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells Using Native And Non-Native Nanocrystals In Ferritin As The Dye, Alessandro Perego, John Colton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) present a valuable and sustainable alternative to silicon solar cells. These cells present numerous advantages compered to inorganic photovoltaic systems, such as ability of absorb more sunlight per surface area than standard silicon-based solar panels, DSSCs are also able to work even in low-light conditions such as non-direct sunlight and cloudy skies. Finally, they are economical, easy to manufacture and constructed from abundant and stable resource materials. This makes DSSCs an attractive replacement for current photovoltaic technology. Ferritin (FTN) is a 12 nm diameter spherical protein with an 8 nm hollow interior, which naturally contains iron …
Reverse-Engineering Gene Networks That Can Remember Using The Manifold Boundary Approximation Method, Andrew White, Mark Transtrum
Reverse-Engineering Gene Networks That Can Remember Using The Manifold Boundary Approximation Method, Andrew White, Mark Transtrum
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Observable biological behaviors result from the interactions of microscopic elements, which form complex systems that we can model mathematically. Ideally, mechanistic models should predict a biological system’s behavior without misrepresenting the system’s biochemistry. The method of model reduction known as the Manifold Boundary Approximation Method (MBAM) [2, 3] can help us identify which parts of a model are relevant for explaining a particular behavior. This project applies MBAM to gene transcription networks that exhibit a behavior known as “memory,” the ability to retain cellular decisions to activate or silence genes. We hypothesize that MBAM can help us model the behaviors …
Development And Application Of Quassiclassical Direct Dynamics Program For Organic And Organometallic Reactions, Nathan Wohlgemuth, Dan Ess
Development And Application Of Quassiclassical Direct Dynamics Program For Organic And Organometallic Reactions, Nathan Wohlgemuth, Dan Ess
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Organic and organometallic reactions are generally assumed to follow statistical mechanical models of reactivity and selectivity that correspond to transition state theory. However, in recent years there have been several organic reactions that have been shown to be controlled by post-transition state reaction dynamics. While some direct dynamics programs are available (VENUS, ProgDyn, etc.) they are generally difficult to use and have little documentation. To overcome this problem, we created a molecular dynamics software suite (called DynSuite) that interfaces with the electronic structure program Gaussian 09. We used this software to perform known examples of direct dynamics simulations for organic …

Intelligent Stitching: Transforming Offline Stroke Extraction For Online Handwriting Recognition, Curtis Wigington, William Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Images of historical documents are being collected and archived much faster than volunteers can possibly index them alone. Improvements in offline handwriting recognition could greatly accelerate the work of indexing by FamilySearch. Offline handwriting recognition has already been shown to be effective in assisting indexers and automating the transcription of historical documents into searchable texts. As documents are collected from all around the world, generalized techniques that are robust to damage and noise are needed. Effective stroke extraction and processing is an important tool in improving current recognition techniques.

Studies of dislocation density evolution are fundamental to improved understanding in various areas of deformation mechanics. Recent advances in cross-correlation techniques, applied to EBSD data have particularly shed light on geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) behavior. However, the framework is relatively computationally expensive – patterns are typically saved from the EBSD scan and analyzed offline. A better understanding of the impact of EBSD pattern degradation, such as binning, compression, and various forms of noise, is vital to enable optimization of rapid and low cost GND analysis. This paper tackles the problem by setting up a set of simulated patterns that mimic …

Cloud-Based Analytic Element Groundwater Modeling, Jacob Baird Fullerton
Cloud-Based Analytic Element Groundwater Modeling, Jacob Baird Fullerton
Theses and Dissertations
Managing groundwater resources requires computer modeling software, which in turn brings its own costs in education and usage fees. Although many groundwater modeling programs can be obtained at relatively inexpensive rates the hidden costs of software training remain high in general. What has been done is to make both the software and training available online for free, but this method delegates all responsibility to the users for both accessing the software in addition to learning how to use it properly. In this research the accessibility of groundwater models has been improved upon by creating a web app of an open …

An Analytical Model To Predict The Length Of Oxygen-Assisted, Swirled, Coal And Biomass Flames, David Arthur Ashworth
An Analytical Model To Predict The Length Of Oxygen-Assisted, Swirled, Coal And Biomass Flames, David Arthur Ashworth
Theses and Dissertations
Government regulations to reduce pollutants and increasing environmental awareness in the power generation industry have encouraged coal power plants to begin firing biomass in their boilers. Biomass generally consists of larger particles which produce longer flames than coal for a given burner. The length of the flame is important in fixed-volume boilers because of its influence on heat transfer, corrosion, deposition, and pollutant formation. Many pulverized fuel burners employ a series of co-annular tubes with various flows of fuel and air to produce a stabilized flame. A variable swirl burner with three co-annular tubes, each of variable diameter, has been …
Theory And Applications Of Network Structure Of Complex Dynamical Systems, Vasu Nephi Chetty
Theory And Applications Of Network Structure Of Complex Dynamical Systems, Vasu Nephi Chetty
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most powerful properties of mathematical systems theory is the fact that interconnecting systems yields composites that are themselves systems. This property allows for the engineering of complex systems by aggregating simpler systems into intricate patterns. We call these interconnection patterns the "structure" of the system. Similarly, this property also enables the understanding of complex systems by decomposing them into simpler parts. We likewise call the relationship between these parts the "structure" of the system. At first glance, these may appear to represent identical views of structure of a system. However, further investigation invites the question: are these …
High-Sensitivity Phased Arrays For Radio Astronomy And Satellite Communications, Junming Diao
High-Sensitivity Phased Arrays For Radio Astronomy And Satellite Communications, Junming Diao
Theses and Dissertations
Radio astronomy is used to study stars, galaxies, black holes and gas clouds radiation at radio frequencies. Detecting extremely weak signals from deep space radio sources requires high sensitive feed system associated with large dish antennas. The key figure of merit is survey speed, or the time required to map a region of the sky to a given source flux density. Survey speed is proportional to the frequency bandwidth, the field of view or observable region of the sky, and the squared sensitivity, where sensitivity is related to reflector aperture efficiency and system noise temperature. Compared to the traditional single …

A Quaternary Climate Record From A Uinta Mountains, Usa, Fen Core With Emphasis On Sediment Pyrolysis, Samuel Abraham Hillam
A Quaternary Climate Record From A Uinta Mountains, Usa, Fen Core With Emphasis On Sediment Pyrolysis, Samuel Abraham Hillam
Theses and Dissertations
The northern slopes of the Uinta Mountains, Utah were previously glaciated and contain many landslides. The Tokewanna Landslide is very large and lacks Quaternary faults. Presumably, increased moisture was the failure trigger. A Quaternary climate record from a cored fen, developed in a small basin between hummocks, was reconstructed using sediment pyrolysis, biomass balance, and magnetic susceptibility. Pyrolysis is used to define Hydrogen Indices that are used to delineate wetter and drier conditions based on the kerogen type - Type III being drier, and Type II wetter. The data were matched to a time/depth curve and compared to other Uinta …
A Reconfigurable Trusted Platform Module, Matthew David James
A Reconfigurable Trusted Platform Module, Matthew David James
Theses and Dissertations
A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a security device included in most modern desktop and laptop computers. It helps keep the computing environment secure by isolating cryptographic functions and data from the CPU. A TPM is usually implemented with a small microcontroller which is near the main processor. In addition to a microcontroller, it may employ hardware acceleration to assist in cryptographic computations. When vulnerabilities are found, or new algorithms developed, TPMs become obsolete because the hardware accelerators cannot be upgraded. This thesis presents a proof of concept implementation of a TPM on an FPGA. By using an FPGA, the …

Analysis Of Rigid Extended Object Co-Manipulation By Human Dyads: Lateral Movement Characterization, Erich Mielke, Eric Townsend, Marc D. Killpack
Faculty Publications
During co-manipulation involving humans and robots, it is necessary to base robot controllers on human behaviors to achieve comfortable and coordinated movement between the human-robot dyad. In this paper, we describe an experiment between human-human dyads and we record the force and motion data as the leader-follower dyads moved in translation and rotation. The force/motion data was then analyzed for patterns found during lateral translation only. For extended objects, lateral translation and in-place rotation are ambiguous, but this paper determines a way to characterize lateral translation triggers for future use in human-robot interaction. The study has 4 main results. First, …

Facies Analysis, Sedimentary Petrology, And Reservoir Characterization Of The Lower Triassic Sinbad Limestone Member Of The Moenkopi Formation, Central Utah: A Synthesis Of Surface And Subsurface Data, Kristopher Michael Powell
Theses and Dissertations
Lower Triassic strata in the Wellington Flat and Tully cores reflect a lateral transition from shallow water strata (Wellington Flats core) to strata that indicate deposition on a relatively more distal, storm-dominated ramp (Tully core). The Sinbad Member, along with the upper part of the underlying Black Dragon Member and the lower part of the overlying Torrey Member (Moenkopi Formation), are composed of ten carbonate, siliciclastic and mixed carbonate/siliciclastic facies deposited on a west-facing ramp/shelf that reached maximum flooding during Smithian time. Individual beds and facies display a large degree of lateral homogeneity and regional persistence in the study area. …
