How Radical Are The Implications Of Properzi’S Christ-Centered Perspective On Emotion For Psychology And Psychotherapy?, Jeffrey S. Reber
How Radical Are The Implications Of Properzi’S Christ-Centered Perspective On Emotion For Psychology And Psychotherapy?, Jeffrey S. Reber
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Properzi offers a perspective on emotion that is radically different from traditional secular theories of emotion and the psychotherapy approaches associated with those theories, but perhaps his Christ- centered perspective is even more radical than he perceives it. If it is strongly theistic and strongly relational, as it appears to be, then its implications would significantly alter the psychology of emotion and psychotherapy. These implications need to be explicated so it is clear what a Christ-centered per- spective on emotion would mean to the discipline. I have fleshed out three radical implications regarding scope, relational ontology, and mastery discourse to …
Cynical Indictment Or Genuine Elevation? Ethel Smyth’S “An Adventure In A Train”, Chad Kang
Cynical Indictment Or Genuine Elevation? Ethel Smyth’S “An Adventure In A Train”, Chad Kang
Modernist Short Story Project
Ethel Smyth’s short story, “An Adventure in a Train,” was featured in the London Mercury in 1920. As the journal tried to “help bridge the gap in discussion of literary criticism that was made during the first world war… reconnecting the learned public to literary spheres,” anyone acquainted with the periodical would assume that Smyth’s “An Adventure” would contain literary richness and social commentary (Hipol). Interestingly, however, the plot of “An Adventure” is quite straightforward and lacks any vivid action that is usually associated with any “adventure” story. Indeed, the narrator gets on a train, talks to a middle-aged woman, …
Monitoring The Coastline Change Of Moheshkhali Island Using Remote Sensing Techniques
Monitoring The Coastline Change Of Moheshkhali Island Using Remote Sensing Techniques
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Bangladesh is a riverine country with several estuarial islands, these islands are subjected to dynamic erosion and accretion. Increased sea level could consume about 26% of land in low lying zone like Bangladesh by 2100. In this alarming situation, monitoring coastline dynamics is obligatory to assess the current status of coastline so that essential measures can be taken to compensate the damage. In this study remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) techniques have been used to quantify the erosion and accretion of land along the coastline of Moheshkhali Island, Bangladesh. Satellite images form Thematic Mapper(TM) has been used from …
Evaluating Effects Of Conservation Practices Using Nonpoint Source Pollution Models – A Review
Evaluating Effects Of Conservation Practices Using Nonpoint Source Pollution Models – A Review
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution models have shown promise in evaluating effects of conservation practices (CP) before these practices can be implemented in the field. An increasing trend has been noted in use of NPS pollution models for assessing effectiveness of CPs. The increase in use of NPS pollution models necessitates their continuous development and improvement. Model improvements will help assess water quality impacts of CPs more accurately. Apart from assessing effectiveness of different CPs, models can also help in identifying suitable location for targeting CPs in a watershed. However, there are challenges associated with modeling CPs such as selecting the …
Comparison Of Different Base Flow Separation Methods And Drought Vulnerability In A Rift Valley Area
Comparison Of Different Base Flow Separation Methods And Drought Vulnerability In A Rift Valley Area
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Estimation of groundwater recharge and drought vulnerability assessment was done by comparing Recursive Digital Filtering (TIMESPLOT) and Graphical Hydrograph Separation (HYSEP) methods. In both methods, long term daily stream flow data (1991 - 2003) was used from seven river discharge gauging stations in three physiographic settings (rift, escarpment and highland) and corresponding variable climatic conditions. The results from both methods have similar trend and show general agreement on annual basis with a correlation coefficient of 0.994. Moreover, long-term rainfall-discharge relationship of the sub-basin shows 0.75 correlation. The long term annual weighted catchment recharges are 94.9 mm and 111.9 mm for …

Joseph Smith: The World’S Greatest Guesser (A Bayesian Statistical Analysis Of Positive And Negative Correspondences Between The Book Of Mormon And The Maya), Bruce E. Dale, Brian M. Dale
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Dr. Michael Coe is a prominent Mesoamerican scholar and author of a synthesis and review of ancient Mesoamerican Indian cultures entitled The Maya.1 Dr. Coe is also a prominent skeptic of the Book of Mormon. However, there is in his book strong evidence that favors the Book of Mormon, which Dr. Coe has not taken into account. This article analyzes that evidence, using Bayesian statistics. We apply a strongly skeptical prior assumption that the Book of Mormon “has little to do with early Indian cultures,” as Dr. Coe claims. We then compare 131 separate positive correspondences or points of evidence …
Research And More Research, Daniel C. Peterson
Research And More Research, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Young members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have grown up with a plethora of information available to answer the questions they may have about the Gospel. This, in turn, has allowed discordant information to cause concern in many members, ultimately drawing some away from the Gospel. In a recent address to young, married members of the Church in Chicago, President Dallin H. Oaks advised that more research is often not the way to approach these concerns, but rather that members should rely on their faith in Jesus Christ. While many may not agree with this advice, …
Stochastic Variate Difference Approach For Water Level Discharge Data Sets At Mantralayam Of Andhra Pradesh Of India
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
The stochastic variate difference method generates downscaled data in the hydrology and engineering seasonal periods. The new method is developed in the stochastic linear fitted values to fit a straight line to observed data. The paper explains in detail the standard measures such as mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis of the downscaling data in hydrology. The new model - MLE by Gaussian distribution - is a method that was used to find the values to best fit the data sets. Water is one of the sensitive environmental parameters of the hydrological processes. Therefore, the study of water resources exploitation …

Study On Impact Assessment Of Climate Change On Watershed Using Hydrological Model (Swat)
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Water being most basic necessity for sustainability of the life on globe due to intensification in the population the distribution and sharing of water resources have become added problematical issue. With the intensification of water demand due to industrialization, agricultural practices and domestic need it is important to manage the water resources in an optimum way. With this viewpoint, hydrological modeling shows vital part which can performance as a significant tool for the assessment of water at the basin scale. In the present study, the Soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) have been adopted in assessing the climate change on …

Comparing Phonemic Patterns In Book Of Mormon Personal Names With Fictional And Authentic Sources: An Exploratory Study, Brad Wilcox, Bruce L. Brown, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Sharon Black, Dennis L. Eggett
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In 2013 we published a study examining names from Solomon Spalding’s fictional manuscript, J. R. R. Tolkien’s fictional works, and nineteenth-century US census records. Results showed names created by authors of fiction followed phonemic patterns that differed from those of authentic names from a variety of cultural origins found in the US census. The current study used the same methodology to compare Book of Mormon names to the three name sources in the original study and found that Book of Mormon names seem to have more in common with the patterns found in authentic names than they do with those …
Improving Compassion Measurement In The Workforce By Analyzing Users’ Mouse-Cursor Movements, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Haley Kirk, Joseph S. Valacich
Improving Compassion Measurement In The Workforce By Analyzing Users’ Mouse-Cursor Movements, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Haley Kirk, Joseph S. Valacich
Faculty Publications
Compassion is often an important characteristic of effective employees in the workplace. To measure improvements in employee compassion, identify shortcomings, and even screen applicants, researchers and practitioners have sought reliable measures of compassion. Measuring compassion, however, can be very difficult because people are hesitant reporting a lack of compassion, due to their desire to be viewed favorably by others. We draw on the domain of human-computer interaction to help address this issue. Namely, we propose a theoretically-grounded methodology for helping differentiate between high and low compassion by monitoring users’ mouse-cursor movements in specialized online surveys. We find that people with …
On First-Come, First-Served Queues With Two Classes Of Impatient Customers, Ivo Adan, Brett A. Hathaway, Vidyadhar G. Kulkarni
On First-Come, First-Served Queues With Two Classes Of Impatient Customers, Ivo Adan, Brett A. Hathaway, Vidyadhar G. Kulkarni
Faculty Publications
We study systems with two classes of impatient customers who differ across the classes in their distribution of service times and patience times. The customers are served on a first-come, first-served basis (FCFS) regardless of their class. Such systems are common in customer call centers, which often segment their arrivals into classes of callers whose requests differ in their complexity and criticality. We first consider an M/G/1 + M queue and then analyze the M/M/k + M case. Analyzing these systems using a queue length process proves intractable as it would require us to keep track of the class of …

Using Chronotypes In Literature To Enhance Student Perspectives, Heather Fitzgerald Jorgensen
Using Chronotypes In Literature To Enhance Student Perspectives, Heather Fitzgerald Jorgensen
The Utah English Journal
"How do I draw a picture of democracy?" a seventh grader asked. "I know it's a noun."
"That's a good question," I said, stalling for time. It was my first year teaching at a school in the intermountain west, where seventh graders had grammar instruction every Tuesday.
"Why don't you try drawing a symbol of democracy?" I asked. "Like the American flag or Lady Liberty."
"That works," the student said.
Testing The Test: Expanding The Dialogue On Technical Writing Assessment In The Academy And Workplace, Lindsay Tanner, Jonathan Balzotti
Testing The Test: Expanding The Dialogue On Technical Writing Assessment In The Academy And Workplace, Lindsay Tanner, Jonathan Balzotti
Faculty Publications
The small amount of work on workplace writing assessment has focused almost entirely on student readiness for professional writing or included case studies of employer expectations for new writers. While these studies provide insight into current pedagogies for technical writing and writing instruction in general, the main conclusion to be drawn from them is the unsatisfactory number of recent graduates who display workplace readiness. In this article, we explore writing assessment research in both the academy and the workplace and attempt to identify ways in which the academy’s assessment practices lead, lag behind, or simply differ from writing assessment in …
Russian Heritage Language Speakers In The U.S.: A Profile, Olga Kagan
Russian Heritage Language Speakers In The U.S.: A Profile, Olga Kagan
Russian Language Journal
Brecht and Ingold (2002) advocate systematic efforts to develop heritage language (HL) pedagogy to remedy U.S. language deficits: “…because of [heritage language learners’(HLLs’)] existing language and cultural knowledge, they may require substantially less instructional time than other learners to develop these skills. This is especially true for speakers of the less commonly taught languages” (p. 1).
Russian is one of those less commonly taught languages in the U.S. that is critically important for national security and the global economy. Since the early 1970s, when a large wave of Russian-speaking immigrants began to settle in the U.S., American universities have had …

Fields Of The Mind: An Integral Learning Styles Component Of The E&L Cognitive Styles Construct, Betty Lou Leaver, Andrew R. Corin
Russian Language Journal
The E&L Cognitive Styles Construct was developed in 1997 and copyrighted in 2002 by Ehrman, director of the Research, Evaluation, and Development Division at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), and Leaver, then an associate at the National Foreign Language Center. It was developed in order to organize the proliferation of validated cognitive styles into a single instrument with ten easy-to-understand subscales specifically for the field of foreign or second language (L2) learning and teaching (Leaver 1997, 2000; Ehrman and Leaver 2002). The first two subscales, which relate to fields of the mind, however, have often created confusion or misunderstanding among …
Businessmen And Ballerinas Take Different Forms: A Strategic Resource For Acquiring Russian Vocabulary And Morphology, Laura A. Janda
Businessmen And Ballerinas Take Different Forms: A Strategic Resource For Acquiring Russian Vocabulary And Morphology, Laura A. Janda
Russian Language Journal
Included in the tasks facing a language learner is the acquisition of a lexicon and a grammar. However, when the target language has inflectional morphology, these two parts of the language-learning task intersect in the paradigms of grammatical word forms because each open-class lexeme has a number of forms that allow it to express various combinations of grammatical categories. Among major world languages, Russian is relatively highly inflected, meaning that the challenges of acquiring vocabulary are compounded by the need to master the inflectional morphology. Even a modest basic vocabulary of a few thousand inflected lexemes has over a hundred …
Comparison Of Wind Farm Layout Optimization Results Using A Simple Wake Model And Gradient-Based Optimization To Large-Eddy Simulations, Jared J. Thomas, Jennifer Annoni, Paul Fleming, Andrew Ning
Comparison Of Wind Farm Layout Optimization Results Using A Simple Wake Model And Gradient-Based Optimization To Large-Eddy Simulations, Jared J. Thomas, Jennifer Annoni, Paul Fleming, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
The models used during wind farm layout optimization use simplifying assumptions that can alter the design space. Some characteristics of the simple models may negatively influence the resulting layouts. In this paper, we perform wind farm layout optimization using a simple wake model and compare the resulting improvements to large-eddy simulation (LES) results to confirm that the layout was actually improved. We begin by describing the models used, including changes specific for use with gradient-based optimization. We then compare our models’ output to previously published model and LES results. Using the models described, we performed gradient-based wind farm layout optimization …
Using Coherence To Improve The Calculation Of Active Acoustic Intensity With The Phase And Amplitude Gradient Estimator Method, Mylan Ray Cook
Using Coherence To Improve The Calculation Of Active Acoustic Intensity With The Phase And Amplitude Gradient Estimator Method, Mylan Ray Cook
Theses and Dissertations
Coherence, which gives the similarity of signals received at two microphone locations, can be a powerful tool for calculating acoustic quantities, particularly active acoustic intensity. To calculate active acoustic intensity, a multi-microphone probe is often used, and therefore coherence between all microphone pairs on the probe can be obtained. The phase and amplitude gradient estimator (PAGE) method can be used to calculate intensity, and is well suited for many situations. There are limitations to this method—such as multiple sources or contaminating noise in the sound field—which can cause significant error. When there are multiple sources or contaminating noise present, the …
Increasing English Learners’ Positive Emotional Response To Learning Through Dance, Grant Eckstein, Elizabeth Hanks
Increasing English Learners’ Positive Emotional Response To Learning Through Dance, Grant Eckstein, Elizabeth Hanks
Faculty Publications
This study investigates dance as an English Second Language (ESL) curriculum enhancement. The curriculum utilizes kinesthetic learning, which is a method seldom incorporated in formal academic classrooms (Pourhosein Gilakjani, 2011) despite evidence suggesting that it benefits all students, including those without kinesthetic learning preferences (Schumann, 1997). Supporters believe that the benefits of incorporating movement in the classroom include increased student enjoyment, motivation, and confidence in learning. However, these beliefs are merely anecdotal at present. This study analyzes quantitative questionnaires and qualitative feedback from 26 students who participated in a 4-week long Dance ESL curriculum to determine whether dance-based learning can …

Modified Cpd Model For Coal Devolatilization At Underground Coal Thermal Treatment Conditions, Ding Wang, Thomas H. Fletcher, Swomitra Mohanty, Hoaquan Hu, Eric G. Eddings
Faculty Publications
To study coal pyrolysis behavior at underground coal thermal treatment (UCTT) conditions, a modified CPD (M-CPD) model was developed and evaluated using two scales of experiments as well as two different coals, Utah Sufco and Illinois #6. Compared with the original CPD model, three major aspects were changed, including (1) rewriting the algorithm using MATLAB built-in functions; (2) developing a correlation method between coal elemental composition and the initial functional group population to calculate the effect of cross-linking on the lattice structure; and (3) using a two-activation energy approach for gas generation kinetics modeling. Results predicted by the M-CPD model …

At times the Information Systems (IS) major has suffered from declining enrollment. Also, STEM fields such as IS are known to suffer from a lack of gender diversity. This research focuses on why students drop out from IS programs and how to provide actionable feedback to improve student retention, particularly among female students. We use creative self-efficacy (CreaSE) as a theoretical lens to explain student retainment. In particular, as students have more confidence in their ability to solve business problems with IS solutions, they are more likely remain in IS courses. Students who sought help from their instructor and StackOverflow.com …

There is a large demand to fill cybersecurity jobs. To alleviate this need, it is important to generate interest in cybersecurity as a career. One way to do this is through job shadowing and internships. Using design science principles, we have built and tested a playable case study (PCS) where participants can act out a virtual internship and learn relevant cybersecurity skills. We ran a study with students in introductory university courses where they played through a simulated internship at a penetration testing company called CyberMatics. In the study we showed that a PCS format helps students 1) better understand …

King Mosiah's Address, Michael Ulrich
King Mosiah's Address, Michael Ulrich
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
King Benjamin's address is well known to readers of the Book of Mormon and is often quoted in devotional contexts. The address marks the transition between two great kings of Nephite history: Benjamin and Mosiah. It is also a moment of teaching and of testimony for the old king. From that point on, the people are officially called by the name of Christ. Another moment of teaching and of popular commitment occurs in the Book of Mosiah, although it receives less attention: the address given by King Mosiah and Alma the Elder when the latter's people arrive in Zarahemla (reported …

The field of conceptual modeling continues to evolve and be applied to important modeling problems in many domains. With a goal of articulating the breadth and depth of the field, our initial work focused on the many implicit and explicit definitions of conceptual modeling, resulting in the Characterizing Conceptual Modeling (CCM) framework. In this paper, we focus on conceptual modeling research, presenting a Characterizing Conceptual Model Research (CCMR) framework and a series of evaluations to assess the coverage and usability of CCMR, the utility and independence of the individual fields in the framework, and likelihood of consistent use.

Little is known about how best to prepare non-native students matriculated at universities in the United States to succeed in discipline-specific writing. Whilesome studies have suggested differences in the types and volumes of writing across disciplines, such studies have compared very few disciplines simultaneously and have not always examined the disciplines most commonly studied by international students. Thus, this study seeks to fill an important gap in the literature by examining the perspectives of university professors regarding their expectations and purposes for student writing as well as their observations about the greatest writing challenges their students face within five of …
