Monitoring The Basking Behavior Of Rio Grande Cooter (Pseudemys Gorzugi) Through Game Cameras In Southeastern New Mexico, Usa, Thanchira Suriyamongkol, Weizhong Tian, Ivana Mali
Western North American Naturalist
Basking is an essential behavior for thermoregulation in turtles. Although basking is widely studied, this behavior varies among populations, habitats, and microclimates. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of game cameras for studying basking activity of Rio Grande Cooter (Pseudemys gorzugi), a New Mexico state-threatened species. From August 2018 to July 2019, images were taken hourly from 07:00 to 19:00 at 3 locations along or near the Black River, New Mexico. We used a generalized linear mixed-effect model to find associations between basking patterns and environmental variables. The species was active year-round, with the greatest number of …

Development Of An Origami Inspired Composite Deployable Structure Utilizing Compliant Joints As Surrogate Folds, Samuel Porter Smith
Theses and Dissertations
This work presents the design and construction of a self-deployable, self-stiffening,and retractable (SDSR) space array from carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP’s) and a working prototype is demonstrated. The effort required developing principles for the design of high-strain composite flexural joints and their integration into angled composite panels. Designing LET arrays in angled panels is explored. Analysis of simple composite LET joints is presented for two degrees of freedom. Validation of the composite LET modeling is sought through numerical methods and empirical testing. Testing of several composite LET joint specimens is conducted and the results are reported. Results indicate that (while …
Characterizing Behaviors And Functions Of Joints For Design Of Origami-Based Mechanical Systems, Nathan Chandler Brown
Characterizing Behaviors And Functions Of Joints For Design Of Origami-Based Mechanical Systems, Nathan Chandler Brown
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses a number of challenges designers face when designing deployable origami-based arrays, specifically joint selection, design, and placement within an array. In deployable systems, the selection and arrangement of joint types is key to how the system functions. The kinematics and performance of an array is directly affected by joint performance. This work develops joint metrics which are then used to compare joint performances, constructing a tool designers can use when selecting joints for an origami array. While often a single type of joint is used throughout an array, this work shows how using multiple types of joints …

In this study, a nuclear hybrid energy system (NHES) with large-scale hydrogen storage integrated with a gas turbine cycle is proposed as a flexible system for load following. The proposed system consists of a nuclear reactor, a steam Rankine cycle, a hydrogen electrolyzer, a storage system for hydrogen in an underground salt cavern, and a Brayton cycle that uses hydrogen as fuel to generate additional electricity to meet peak demand. A dynamic mathematical model is developed for each subsystem of the NHES. To evaluate the potential benefits of the system, a one-year study is conducted, using scaled grid demand data …
Acclimation Of Contact Impedance And Wrist-Based Pulsatile Signal Measurements Through Electrical Bioimpedance, Diego A. Leon
Acclimation Of Contact Impedance And Wrist-Based Pulsatile Signal Measurements Through Electrical Bioimpedance, Diego A. Leon
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to expand the understanding of certain properties of electrodes used for electrical bioimpedance measurements. Specifically, this work investigates the acclimation effect of the skin-electrode interface contact impedance. It also attempts to study the relationship between electrode spacing and amplitude of bioimpedance pulsatile signals. It was found that as soon as dry electrodes are placed on the skin, the contact impedance exponentially decreases until it reaches a constant level. The acclimation time, time to reach a constant contact impedance, is dependent of the electrode size and frequency. Increasing the size of the electrode, as well …

An Integrated Model Of Optofluidic Biosensor Function And Performance, Joel Greig Wright, Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Optofluidic flow-through biosensor devices have been in development for fast bio-target detection. Utilizing the fabrication processes developed by the microelectronics industry, these biosensors can be fabricated into lab-on-a-chip devices with a degree of platform portability. This biosensor technology can be used to detect a variety of targets, and is particularly useful for the detection single molecules and nucleic acid strands. Microfabrication also offers the possibility of production at scale, and this will offer a fast detection method for a range of applications with promising economic viability. The development of this technology has advanced to now warrant a descriptive model that …
Reducing The Manual Annotation Effort For Handwriting Recognition Using Active Transfer Learning, Eric Burdett
Reducing The Manual Annotation Effort For Handwriting Recognition Using Active Transfer Learning, Eric Burdett
Theses and Dissertations
Handwriting recognition systems have achieved remarkable performance over the past several years with the advent of deep neural networks. For high-quality recognition, these models require large amounts of labeled training data, which can be difficult to obtain. Various methods to reduce this effort have been proposed in the realms of active and transfer learning, but not in combination. We propose a framework for fitting new handwriting recognition models that joins active and transfer learning into a unified framework. Empirical results show the superiority of our method compared to traditional active learning, transfer learning, or standard supervised training schemes.
Encirclement Of Moving Targets Using Noisy Range And Bearing Measurements, Cammy Peterson, Puneet Jain, Randal Beard
Encirclement Of Moving Targets Using Noisy Range And Bearing Measurements, Cammy Peterson, Puneet Jain, Randal Beard
Faculty Publications
This paper presents theoretically justified controllers that use relative range and bearing measurements to steer a team of autonomous vehicles, operating without inertial position information, to circular trajectories around a constant-acceleration, constant-velocity, or stationary target. An extended Kalman filter is used to improve the noisy relative measurements and estimate the velocity of the moving target. These estimated values are used in the control laws to encircle constant-velocity moving targets. Lyapunov techniques are utilized to show that the vehicle will converge to the desired circular formations. Additionally, cooperating vehicles are shown to converge to a circular formation with equal temporal spacing …

This paper brings contemporary ANE scholarship in several fields together to construct an updated starting point for interpretation of the teachings of the Book of Mormon. It assembles findings from studies of ancient scribal culture, historical linguistics and epigraphy, Hebrew rhetoric, and the history and archaeology of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Levant, together with the traditions of ancient Israel to construct a contextualized perspective for understanding Lehi, Nephi, and their scribal training as they would have been understood by their contemporaries. Lehi and Nephi are shown to be the beneficiaries of the most advanced scribal training available in 7th century …
Turn Of Phrase: Contrastive Pre-Training For Discourse-Aware Conversation Models, Roland Laboulaye
Turn Of Phrase: Contrastive Pre-Training For Discourse-Aware Conversation Models, Roland Laboulaye
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding long conversations requires recognizing a discourse flow unique to conversation. Recent advances in unsupervised representation learning of text have been attained primarily through language modeling, which models discourse only implicitly and within a small window. These representations are in turn evaluated chiefly on sentence pair or paragraph-question pair benchmarks, which measure only local discourse coherence. In order to improve performance on discourse-reliant, long conversation tasks, we propose Turn-of-Phrase pre-training, an objective designed to encode long conversation discourse flow. We leverage tree-structured Reddit conversations in English to, relative to a chosen conversation path through the tree, select paths of varying …
Exploring Non-Functional Coupling Between Subsystems, Matt Pope
Exploring Non-Functional Coupling Between Subsystems, Matt Pope
Theses and Dissertations
Many software systems depend on other systems to function correctly or are themselves composed of interdependent subsystems. In that context, behavioral changes in a dependency may have consequences for a dependent subsystem. This includes changes to non-functional properties such as latency or availability. In this paper we use the term non-functional coupling to mean the extent to which a subsystem is affected by changes to non-functional properties in a dependency. We argue that non-functional coupling has implications for the maintainability, reliability and performance of an overall system. We also explore the extent to which various engineering techniques used in interaction …

Impacts Of Manipulating Photoperiod On Circadian Rhythms Of Agave Photosynthesis, Robert Hadfield
Impacts Of Manipulating Photoperiod On Circadian Rhythms Of Agave Photosynthesis, Robert Hadfield
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Agave uses photoperiod, among other environmental conditions, to time its circadian rhythm of photosynthesis. Two species of Agave (A. americana and A. murpheyi) were tested under two extreme photoperiod conditions (constant light and constant dark) against a normal photoperiod control (12 hours light, 12 hours dark) to identify the impact of abnormal photoperiod on circadian rhythms of Agave photosynthesis. Under constant light conditions, normal oscillations in CO2 gas exchange became unpredictable in duration and amplitude in both species and became very infrequent in A. murpheyi. Under constant dark conditions, net CO2 uptake stabilized at a negative value and oscillations ceased …

A Qualitative Investigation Of The Implementation Of The Flipped Classroomâ In Secondary World Language Classes In The State Of Utah, Sarah Victoria Hoppes
Theses and Dissertations
The flipped classroom is a teaching method where students access instructional materials outside of class through teacher-made videos or readings so that time spent in-class with the instructor can focus on collaboration and student-driven practice. This instructional practice has gained popularity worldwide at the secondary and post-secondary level because of its perceived benefits for students. Such benefits include higher test scores and proficiency, more frequent interactions between teachers and students, increased content knowledge and application, and improved motivation and attitude towards a course. Although worthwhile, much of the research lacks details of teacher perspectives on the method and its use …

A Usability Study Of Fido2 Roaming Software Tokens As A Password Replacement, Brian Rasmussen
A Usability Study Of Fido2 Roaming Software Tokens As A Password Replacement, Brian Rasmussen
Theses and Dissertations
The use of passwords for user authentication has significant shortcomings. As society becomes more dependent on the internet and web services, we need to find a replacement authentication method that users are willing to use. WebAuthn is one potential technology for password replacement. Recent studies have shown that users enjoy the usability of WebAuthn and hardware tokens as a password replacement but don't want to carry them around. Meanwhile, little to no research involves the use of software tokens. I carried out a user study of WebAuthn and roaming software tokens when used as a password replacement. We were able …
Active Thermography For Additive Manufacturing Processes, Nicholas Jay Wallace
Active Thermography For Additive Manufacturing Processes, Nicholas Jay Wallace
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of the research conducted for this master's thesis is to understand if active thermography is a suitable technique to detect (identify) and measure (approximate depth and or size) defects in additive manufacturing (AM) processes. Although other non-destructive measurement techniques exist, active thermography is an attractive option for AM applications because of the short measurement times that could be implemented between each layer of a print, and because of the relatively inexpensive equipment required. However, pulse thermography is typically applied to detect larger defects (>1 mm) in materials with high thermal conductivity. It was uncertain if active thermography …

Immunoaffinity Monoliths For Multiplexed Extraction Of Preterm Birth Biomarkers From Human Blood Serum In 3d Printed Microfluidic Devices, Haifa Mohammad Almughamsi
Theses and Dissertations
Preterm birth (PTB) results in over 15 million early births annually and is the leading cause of neonatal deaths. There are no clinical methods currently available to evaluate risk of PTB at early stages in pregnancy; thus, a rapid diagnostic to analyze PTB risk would be beneficial. Microfluidic immunoaffinity extraction is a promising platform for preparing complex samples, such as maternal serum with PTB risk biomarkers. 3D printed microfluidic devices have advantages over conventional microfluidic systems including simple fabrication and potential for iterative optimization to improve designs. In this work, I developed immunoaffinity monoliths in 3D printed microfluidic devices modified …

Predicting Human Behavior In Repeated Games With Attitude Vectors, Brian L. James
Theses and Dissertations
As Artificial Intelligence systems are used by human users at an increasing frequency, the need for such systems to understand and predict human behavior likewise increases. In my work, I have considered how to predict human behavior in repeated games. These repeated games can be applied as a foundation to many situations where a person may interact with an AI, In an attempt to create such a foundation, I have built a system using Attitude Vectors used in automata to predict actions based on prior actions and communications. These Attitude Vector Automata (AVA) can transform information from actions in one …
Analysis Of Closed-Loop Digital Twin, Andrew Stuart Eyring
Analysis Of Closed-Loop Digital Twin, Andrew Stuart Eyring
Theses and Dissertations
Given recent advancements in technology and recognizing the evolution of smart manufacturing, the implementation of digital twins for factories and processes is becoming more common and more useful. Additionally, expansion in connectivity, growth in data storage, and the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) allow for greater opportunities not only with digital twins but closed loop analytics. Discrete Event Simulation (DES) has been used to create digital twins and in some instances fitted with live connections to closely monitor factory operations. However, the benefits of a connected digital twin are not easily quantified. Therefore, a test bed demonstration …
Molecular Dynamics Of Organometallic Systems, Ryan Wayne Carlsen
Molecular Dynamics Of Organometallic Systems, Ryan Wayne Carlsen
Theses and Dissertations
Metal-mediated organometallic reactions are critical for both catalytic and synthetic chemistry. Density functional theory (DFT) potential-energy calculations are routinely used with a transition-state theory type of approach to understand and predict the reaction mechanisms of organometallic reactions. However, these calculations do not include atomic momentum and thus ignore dynamic effects. Molecular dynamics is a powerful tool for elucidating mechanistic details of chemical reactions. In this dissertation, quasiclassical molecular dynamics studies reveal key mechanistic details about several fundamental organometallic reactions. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of key molecular dynamics details. Chapters 2-4 provide details on for three classic organometallic reactions …
Decision Based Learning Course Design & Implementation For Introductory Statistics, Austin Heath
Decision Based Learning Course Design & Implementation For Introductory Statistics, Austin Heath
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Researchers in multiple industries (biomedicine, engineering, etc.) cite the selection of an appropriate statistical test as a common problem. Experts draw on a framework of conceptual and procedural knowledge to navigate when to use statistical methods. Students also struggle determining the correct statistical method to use for a given research question. This is because they lack the opportunity to practice recognizing a host of features in each research question that provide clues for experts as to which method is most appropriate. “Decision Based Learning” (DBL) is a teaching method designed to help teachers and students address this struggle. In this …
