Religion In Democracy: Tocqueville's Defense, Gary Novak, Kelly Patterson
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
It is sometimes held to be paradoxical that liberal democracy has offered no sound justification of itself. For those who are citizens of liberal democracies, and therefore are concerned not only with the regime of the fatherland but a 1 so with the good regime genus, this paradox causes not only confusion. The citizen is left a so without justification for the patros: his love of the fatherland has then no rational logos. There have been various recent attempts to provide liberal democracy with the justification necessary to survive the attack of various schools. However one assesses …
A History Of The Development And Objectives Of The Lds Church News Section Of The Deseret News, Paul T. Roberts
A History Of The Development And Objectives Of The Lds Church News Section Of The Deseret News, Paul T. Roberts
Theses and Dissertations
The Church News supplement to the Deseret News has been part of the Salt Lake City newspaper for over fifty years. It has evolved from a weekly eight-page tabloid religious section of the daily newspaper to a weekly magazine of feature articles, photographs, editorials and news of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
An historical study of the Church News has not been done previously. Hence, the intent of this study is to observe how the Church News has served its purposes and goals over its history. The study briefly outlines how the publication has developed and will …

Private Documents And Papers As Sources For Research On Chinese Economy And Society During The Ch'ing Period-- A Report On The Materials Collected In Taiwan, Michael H. Finegan
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Those interested in studying the society and economy of premodern China on the local level may have difficulty in finding suitable source materials. The information in standard published sources is often not detailed or precise enough to answer all important questions about the livelihood and social relationships of ordinary people. Three types of sources which may help to answer such questions and which may be found in Taiwan today are private documents and papers, popular editions of books from the Ch'ing period, and local government archives. Although discussion here will concentrate on introducing the private papers to be found in …

"The Wyclyf" — Thrills And Dangers Of Editing A Medieval Text, Allen D. Breck
"The Wyclyf" — Thrills And Dangers Of Editing A Medieval Text, Allen D. Breck
Quidditas
In 1983 we shall be observing the six hundredth anniversary of the death of one of England's great contributors, along with William of Ockham and John Duns Scotus, to the thought, learning, and literature of the fourteenth century. John Wyclyf died at the comparatively advanced age oof sixty-four after two years' illness attendant upon a stroke, on St. Sylvester's day, December 31, 1384. He had been stricken a second time while hearing Mass said by his curate in his parish church at Lutterworth, some thirteen miles northeast of Coventry. We know nothing about his burial, save that in accordance with …

Fishes Of Utah Lake, Richard A. Heckmann, Charles W. Thompson, David A. White
Fishes Of Utah Lake, Richard A. Heckmann, Charles W. Thompson, David A. White
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
There has been a drastic change in fish populations inhabiting Utah Lake during the last 100 years. When the pioneers first entered Utah Valley they found a well-established cutthroat trout population in Utah Lake and in the tributaries flowing into the lake. After intensive agricultural and industrial development this salmonid disappeared, and carp, white bass, and black bullhead are the common species today. The known history of the Utah Lake fisheries is summarized. Through proper management it is possible to establish a sport fishery of the common fish species currently in the Lake, including walleye, channel catfish, and largemouth bass. …
Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin
Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin
Theses and Dissertations
Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.
This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.

The Bridge
When the editor of The Bridge asked if I would write my reaction to my dissertation, I did a great deal of thinking. How would I write about my feelings which covered the four years during which I did the research and writing of this paper? I concluded that a historical review would give me the best opportunity to present my reaction to my research. Then, when he asked me to review my own study since it related my experiences, I concluded that both could be incorporated in one effort if I were permitted to make personal references.
Decreases Of Juniper Woodland In The Utah And Salt Lake Valleys Since Settlement, E. M. Christensen, J. D. Brotherson
Decreases Of Juniper Woodland In The Utah And Salt Lake Valleys Since Settlement, E. M. Christensen, J. D. Brotherson
Great Basin Naturalist
Although pinyon-juniper woodland is common throughout most of Utah, it is less so in Utah and Salt Lake valleys. Even so, stands do occur in the valleys and are known to have been there since presettlement times. Three such stands occurring along the eastern sections of the valleys have shown major decreases in area since settlement times, and one has all but disappeared. Their disappearance is attributed to early use for fuel, agricultural, and urbanization purposes.

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas
A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey
Theses and Dissertations
The material in this study is a follow-up of a thesis done by Paul C. Richards entitled, "A Study of Evidences Related to LDS Church History as Reflected in Volumes I through XIII of the Journal of Discourse." That same basic format has been employed in treating the last thirteen volumes of the Discourses.
The Discourses contains addresses delivered by General Authorities of the LDS Church and others from 1854 to 1886. Until Richards did his thesis, no one had compiled an index of those volumes that dealt exclusively with history related to the LDS Church. This study …

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis traces the history of the restoration and development of the Aaronic Priesthood and its offices of priest, teacher, and deacon, from 1829 to the middle 1840s in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The major areas of emphasis include the organizational structure of the Aaronic Priesthood, the responsibilities assigned to priests, teachers, and deacons, and the relationship of the functions of the Aaronic Priesthood which are first given in Section 13 of the Doctrine and Covenants, namely the ministering of angels, the preparatory gospel, and the offering of the sons of Levi. Also included is the …

It is also the purpose of this study to show what has been accomplished in regard to the original call and also determine what remains to be completed. The history of the San Juan Mission has been indexed under the following chapter headings: Introduction to San Juan and the Call …
