Trust Negotiation For Open Database Access Control, Paul A. Porter May 2006

Trust Negotiation For Open Database Access Control, Paul A. Porter

Theses and Dissertations

Hippocratic databases are designed to protect the privacy of the individuals whose personal information they contain. This thesis presents a model for providing and enforcing access control in an open Hippocratic database system. Previously unknown individuals can gain access to information in the database by authenticating to roles through trust negotiation. Allowing qualified strangers to access the database increases the usefulness of the system without compromising privacy. This thesis presents the design and implementation of two methods for filtering information from database queries. First, we extend a query modification method for use in an open database system. Second, we introduce …

Francis Webster: The Unique Story Of One Handcart Pioneer's Faith And Sacrifice, Chad M. Orton

BYU Studies

Francis Webster was a member of a group of Mormon pioneers who in 1856 encountered severe early winter weather and suffered many casualties. Webster is remembered among Mormons as the man who stopped a Sunday School class from criticizing leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for allowing the two ill-fated handcart companies to begin their journey so late in the summer. Webster's paraphrased statement, recorded by a member of the Sunday School class, has come to represent the sentiments of all handcart pioneers in most Mormons' minds, but Chad Orton refutes the idea that the whole …

Portrayal Of Disabilities In Caldecott Books, Tina Taylor, Mary Anne Prater, Jennifer Jenson May 2006

Portrayal Of Disabilities In Caldecott Books, Tina Taylor, Mary Anne Prater, Jennifer Jenson

Faculty Publications

The authors read all of the books that received Caldecott Medal and Honor status awarded between 1938 and 2005 and found that 11 included a character with a disability. For each book, they analyzed characterizations of those with disabilities and generated tips for using the book to teach about disabilities. They argue that accurate portrayals of characters with disabilities, particularly the types of disabilities encountered most frequently by young children, are needed in award-winning picture books.

Mechanisms Imposing The Vbeta Bias Of V14a Natural Killer T Cells And Consequences For Microbial Glycolipid Recognition, Paul B. Savage, Dasten G. Wei, Shane A. Curran, Luc Teyton, Albert Bendelac May 2006

Mechanisms Imposing The Vbeta Bias Of V14a Natural Killer T Cells And Consequences For Microbial Glycolipid Recognition, Paul B. Savage, Dasten G. Wei, Shane A. Curran, Luc Teyton, Albert Bendelac

Faculty Publications

Mouse and human natural killer T (NKT) cells recognize a restricted set of glycosphingolipids presented by CD1d molecules, including self iGb3 and microbial alpha-glycuronosylceramides. The importance of the canonical Valpha 14-Jalpha18 TCR alphachain for antigen recognition by NKT cells is well recognized, but the mechanisms underlying the Vbeta8, Vbeta7, and Vbeta2 bias in mouse have not been explored. To study the influences of thymic selection and the constraints of pairing with Valpha 14-Jalpha 18, we have created a population of mature T cells expressing Valpha 14-Jalpha 18 TCRalpha chain in CD1d-deficient mice and studied its recognition properties in vitro and …

In the recent Tim Burton film Big Fish, Albert Finney's yarn-spinning character comments that wild parrots in the Congo will discuss most anything: politics, fashion, literature … but not religion. “Why not religion?” his son queries. “Because it's rude!” snaps the father, “you never know who you might offend.”

Parental Death And Its Impact On The Marital Satisfaction Of The Surviving Adult Child, Ryan Glenn Henry Apr 2006

Parental Death And Its Impact On The Marital Satisfaction Of The Surviving Adult Child, Ryan Glenn Henry

Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature has identified parental death as having a negative impact on the physical and mental health of the surviving adult child. In addition, research suggests that the marital satisfaction of a male or female adult child is negatively impacted after either a father or mother has died. The purpose of this research is to further study this topic by examining longitudinal dyadic data to determine how the death of a parent or death of an in-law impacts marital interaction when certain mediating variables are taken into account. Some of the mediating variables included quality of the parent-child relationship, caregiving, …

Linkages Between Family Cohesion And Sibling Relationships In Families Raising A Child With A Disability, Mary L. Jefferson Apr 2006

Linkages Between Family Cohesion And Sibling Relationships In Families Raising A Child With A Disability, Mary L. Jefferson

Theses and Dissertations

Family researchers have often reported that siblings of children with disabilities have mixed outcomes, some harmful, and some beneficial, but have neglected to investigate how the sibling relationship might be correlated with other factors, such as family cohesion. Therefore, 72 mothers and fathers raising a child with a disability and a child without a disability completed the Family Cohesion subscale of Bloom's family functioning measure and the Sibling Inventory of Behavior to determine interactions between parents' perceptions of family cohesion and sibling relationships. Results indicated that mothers and fathers' perceptions of cohesion and sibling relationships were not significantly different. Mothers' …

Bringing Love And Joy Into Counseling, Michael D. Adams, Matthew R. Draper, Camishe R. Hairston

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Currently many theories within the field of psychology ascribe to a hidden assumption that individualism is a value one should pursue in order to obtain an ideal life. The assumption of individualism is that happiness comes from living a life focused on the self, seeking self-fulfillment. This article looks at the impact this assumption has had on the practice of psychotherapy and asserts that happiness is found through living one's life in accordance with the moral standard of love, or charity. A definition of love is given, and the article discusses and illustrates with clinical examples how love has the …

Origins Of Human Worth, John M. Rector Apr 2006

Origins Of Human Worth, John M. Rector

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This paper addresses the problem of conditional self-worth among Latter-day Saints. Four principles are expounded which form the foundation of a cognitive strategy to replace the irrational belief that the worth of human beings is contingent on certain external conditions: (1) people are not upset by things, but by the view they take of things; (2) all human beings are flawed, imperfect, and fallible; (3) all human beings have equal worth; and (4) the worth of a human being in his or her capacity to become as God. These hierarchical principles form the basis of a healthy personal philosophy that …

Theistic Psychotherapy, P. Scott Richards Apr 2006

Theistic Psychotherapy, P. Scott Richards

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This article describes theoretical and empircal work that has been done during the past few decades to develop a theistic framework and approach for psychotherapy. It provides a brief summary of the reasons a theistic strategy for counseling and psychotherapy is needed, then explores its theological, philosophical, theoretical and empirical foundations. The article suggests future directions of theistic psychotherapy and invites Latter-day Saint professionals to join the effort to bring this framework and approach more fully into the therapeutic mainstream and into their own practices.

An Empirical Study Of The Mother-Son Dyad In Relation To The Development Of Adult Male Homosexuality, Gregory L. Dickson, A. Dean Byrd, Ryan Howes, Heidi Drake Apr 2006

An Empirical Study Of The Mother-Son Dyad In Relation To The Development Of Adult Male Homosexuality, Gregory L. Dickson, A. Dean Byrd, Ryan Howes, Heidi Drake

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Previous research suggests the need for further exploration of the parent-child relationship in the development of adult male homosexuality. Utilizing the Parent-Child Relations Questionnaire (PCR-II; Siegelman, 1979) 135 men (57 ego-syntonic homosexuals, 34 ego-dystonic homosexuals, and 44 heterosexuals) were surveyed. Results included significant group differences on the PCR-II Mother scales and on frequency of sexual abuse. Results are consistent with past studies which suggest an important role for enviromental factors in the development of homosexuality, as consistent with theoretical literature from an object relations perspective.

Quantifying Chlorophyll A Content Through Remote Sensing: A Pilot Study Of Utah Lake, Tiana Davis Mar 2006

Quantifying Chlorophyll A Content Through Remote Sensing: A Pilot Study Of Utah Lake, Tiana Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Utah Lake is a really large but shallow lake located in the arid environment of the Western United States. Due to a variety of factors it is listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as an "impaired water body" and must be closely monitored. Because of its large extent and shallow depth the water quality is heterogeneous and can change rapidly. This means that traditional water quality monitoring methods, which require large investments in field personnel, equipment, and water sample analysis, cannot produce a model that is truly representative of the entire water body. This thesis examines the feasibility of using …

Digital Storytelling: The Application Of Vichian Theory, Karen Pierotti Mar 2006

Digital Storytelling: The Application Of Vichian Theory, Karen Pierotti

Theses and Dissertations

Storytelling is often looked at as something archaic or something that simpler cultures engage in. However, in our sophisticated and highly technological world storytelling swirls about us though we may not always recognize it. This thesis looks at the phenomenon of digital storytelling that functions to create community on the Internet. In order to ground this phenomenon in theory, I examine the works of Giambattista Vico, the 18th-century Neapolitan philosopher/rhetorician, who lived on the cusp of the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. Furthermore, as a teacher of rhetoric to youth, Vico admonished young people to study the arts of …

Physical Activity And C-Reactive Protein Levels: The Confounding Role Of Body Fat Percentage, Kenric Lloyd Russell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to examine the cross-sectional relationship between physical activity and C-reactive protein (CRP) in 211 middle-aged women (43.1 + 3.0 years). A secondary objective was to determine the extent to which body fat percentage operated as a confounder in the association between physical activity and CRP. Physical activity was objectively measured using MTI accelerometers, which the subjects wore for seven continuous days. Fasting blood samples were taken, from which CRP was measured using a solid phase ELISA. Body fat percentage was assessed using the Bod Pod. Results showed that physical activity was significantly and …

Fiber Type-Specific Desmin Content In Human Single Muscle Fibers, Heidi Ghent Mar 2006

Fiber Type-Specific Desmin Content In Human Single Muscle Fibers, Heidi Ghent

Theses and Dissertations

Contractile and cytoskeletal protein concentrations have been shown to differ on the basis of fiber type in whole muscle homogenates. The purpose of this study was to compare the content of the intermediate filament protein, desmin, between type I and type IIa single muscle fibers from a mixed muscle in human subjects. Biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis of six recreationally active males. Approximately 150 single muscle fibers were dissected from each sample and analyzed using SDS-PAGE to determine myosin heavy chain (MHC) composition. Following identification, muscle fibers were pooled into two groups (MHC I and MHC IIa). Desmin …
