A Death-Struck Year, Amy Miner
A Death-Struck Year, Amy Miner
Children's Book and Media Review
A Death-struck Year tells the story of Cleo Berry, a seventeen-year-old Oregon resident who finds herself in the midst of the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918. Based on true events, the devastation affecting hundreds of men, women, and children are experienced through Cleo’s perspective and conscious decisions to leave no one “unattended.” As a child once left behind when both of her parents were killed in a carriage accident, Cleo takes great risks to find and save those too sick to get care. Driven by the events of the influenza occurring over a four-month period, and propelled in her quest …

Deadly, Pat Frade
Children's Book and Media Review
New York City in 1906 many people were falling ill and dying of typhoid fever. Sixteen-year-old Prudence Galewski decides to leave school and finds a job to support her mother and herself. She gains employment with the Department of Health and Sanitation where she is an assistant to Mr. Soper, the sanitation engineer. Mr. Soper is trying to determine how typhoid is spread, and as Prudence types up Mr. Soper’s notes it is concluded that many cases had one common element—a cook. The department tracks down the cook, Mary Mallon, and declares her a healthy carrier of the typhoid fever, …
Curious George Discovers Germs
Curious George Discovers Germs
Children's Book and Media Review
George gets sick with a cold, but that doesn’t stop him from being curious—he’s determined to find out all about germs and sickness! When he dozes off in bed, he dreams that he’s exploring inside his own body and comes across the germ culprits, promptly kicking them out of his body with a sneeze. Though George recovers, the man with the yellow hat also becomes sick, and this time George tracks the same germs in him and they escape when the man wipes his nose with his hand. Instead of making their way to yet another person, these germs are …
Helminth Infections Across A Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus) Annual Cycle In Fisher County, Texas, Stacie M. Villarreal, Andrea Bruno, Alan M. Fedynich, Leonard A. Brennan, Dale Rollins
Helminth Infections Across A Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus) Annual Cycle In Fisher County, Texas, Stacie M. Villarreal, Andrea Bruno, Alan M. Fedynich, Leonard A. Brennan, Dale Rollins
Western North American Naturalist
Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations in Texas have been declining during the past several decades. Declines have been attributed to habitat loss, but other causes and potential contributing factors (e.g., parasites, disease) have been posited. Little is known about helminth parasites in bobwhites from Texas. Previous studies often used bobwhites collected during the hunting season, which only samples individuals that survive after the summer breeding season. Our objectives were to (1) assess the prevalence, intensity, and abundance of helminths in bobwhites from Fisher County, Texas, during an annual cycle; (2) identify which species are known to be pathogenic; …
The Doctrine Of Inclusion: Reaching Students With Disabilities, Reginald S. Slocombe
The Doctrine Of Inclusion: Reaching Students With Disabilities, Reginald S. Slocombe
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
I remember the first time I walked into a class for students with special needs when I was a teacher at the Logan Seminary in Cache Valley, Utah. I was asked to assist Sister Wendy Parker with her second-hour class. She did not have all of her students with disabilities paired up with their traditional peer tutors, so I needed to help maintain order as she continued to organize the class. As I saw many students within that looked and sounded different than traditional students, I realized I had no idea what to do in this classroom! After a moment, …
Cannabis-Related Episodic Memory Deficits And Hippocampal Morphological Differences In Healthy Individuals And Schizophrenia Subjects, Derin J. Cobia, Matthew J. Smith, James L. Reilly, Jodi Gilman, Andrea G. Roberts, Kathryn I. Alpert, Lei Wang, Hans C. Breiter, John G. Csernansky

Faculty Publications
Cannabis use has been associated with episodic memory (EM) impairments and abnormal hippocampus morphology among both healthy individuals and schizophrenia subjects. Considering the hippocampus' role in EM, research is needed to evaluate the relationship between cannabis-related hippocampal morphology and EM among healthy and clinical groups. We examined differences in hippocampus morphology between control and schizophrenia subjects with and without a past (not current) cannabis use disorder (CUD). Subjects group-matched on demographics included 44 healthy controls (CON), 10 subjects with a CUD history (CON-CUD), 28 schizophrenia subjects with no history of substance use disorders (SCZ), and 15 schizophrenia subjects with a …

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
In a General Authority training meeting, President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008) said regarding the teaching of Church doctrine: “We cannot be too careful. We must watch that we do not get off [course]. In our efforts to be original and fresh and different, we may teach things which may not be entirely in harmony with the basic doctrines of this the restored Church of Jesus Christ. . . . We had better be more alert. . . . We must be watchmen on the tower.”

An Exploration In Fiber Optic Sensors, Frederick Alexander Seng
An Exploration In Fiber Optic Sensors, Frederick Alexander Seng
Theses and Dissertations
With the rise of modern infrastructure and systems, testing and evaluation of specific components such as structural health monitoring is becoming increasingly important. Fiber optic sensors are ideal for testing and evaluating these systems due many advantages such as their lightweight, compact, and dielectric nature. This thesis presents a novel method for detecting electric fields in harsh environments with slab coupled optical sensors (SCOS) as well as a novel method for detecting strain gradients on a Hopkinson bar specimen using fiber Bragg gratings (FBG). Fiber optic electric field sensors are ideal for characterizing the electric field in many different systems. …
Effects Of A Tier 3 Self-Management Intervention With Parent Involvement On Academic Engagement And Disruptive Behavior, Ashley Nicole Lower
Effects Of A Tier 3 Self-Management Intervention With Parent Involvement On Academic Engagement And Disruptive Behavior, Ashley Nicole Lower
Theses and Dissertations
This manuscript includes two studies. The research design for study 1 was a single-subject reversal design, while study 2 was a case study with 5 experimental conditions. These studies investigated the effects of a Tier 3 peer-matching self-management intervention on two elementary school students who had previously been less responsive to Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions. The Tier 3 self-management intervention, which was implemented in the classroom, included daily electronic communication between teachers and the two students' parents. Results indicated that this intervention effectively reduced disruptive behaviors and increased total engagement when implemented with integrity; without integrity, results were …
Natural And Anthropogenic Sources Of Arsenic And Nitrate In A Semi-Arid Alluvial Basin; Goshen Valley, Utah, Brian John Selck
Natural And Anthropogenic Sources Of Arsenic And Nitrate In A Semi-Arid Alluvial Basin; Goshen Valley, Utah, Brian John Selck
Theses and Dissertations
Arsenic (As) and nitrate (NO3) are common contaminants in groundwater that are introduced through a variety of natural and anthropogenic sources. In this study we investigated the sources and distribution of As and NO3 in Goshen Valley, Utah, USA. Goshen Valley is a semi-arid alluvial basin that is impacted by geothermal waters, agriculture, urban development, and legacy mining. In this study we sampled surface water, springs, and wells to analyze concentrations of major ions, trace elements (As, B, Ba, Ca, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Pb, Si, Sr, Zn), and stable isotopes in water (δ18 …
The Willie And Martin Handcart Companies: Application And Insights Into A Recurring Rescue, Jeffrey D. Meservy
The Willie And Martin Handcart Companies: Application And Insights Into A Recurring Rescue, Jeffrey D. Meservy
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The purpose of this paper is not to retell the stories of the handcart companies, one led by James G. Willie and another led by Edward Martin; many have done that very well. Rather, the purpose of this paper is to draw from their examples and experiences and find application for us today. Context, stories, and quotes of these pioneers are used here only in a supportive effort to identify principles, which can guide us today as we strive to live the gospel. President Gordon B. Hinckley stated, “Stories of their rescue need to be repeated again and again. They …
