Parent Perspectives Of Their Child’S Diagnosis With Type 1 Diabetes, Elizabeth Kerr, Dr. Donna Freeborn
Parent Perspectives Of Their Child’S Diagnosis With Type 1 Diabetes, Elizabeth Kerr, Dr. Donna Freeborn
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the beta cells of the pancreas stop secreting insulin. Insulin is the hormone that delivers blood sugar to the body tissues. This life changing diagnosis affects not only the newly diagnosed child—It affects the whole family.
Although research has previously been done on parent experiences raising a child with type 1 diabetes, no research has been done from the perspective of a parent who has raised their child to adulthood. This unique outlook provides greater perspective and insight on the experience as a whole. The purpose of this project was to increase …
Modeling Political Improvement Through Statistical Analysis Of New Zealand’S Youth, Abigail Norton, Steve Thomsen
Modeling Political Improvement Through Statistical Analysis Of New Zealand’S Youth, Abigail Norton, Steve Thomsen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Some things look better on paper than in person. Prior to my three-month stay in New Zealand, I wrongly assumed that the country’s history of economic success and involved voters would translate to somewhere without conflict. What I found is a country riddled with problems.

Background
The prominence of sedentary behavior research in health science has grown rapidly. With this growth there is increasing urgency for clear, common and accepted terminology and definitions. Such standardization is difficult to achieve, especially across multi-disciplinary researchers, practitioners, and industries. The Sedentary Behavior Research Network (SBRN) undertook a Terminology Consensus Project to address this need.
Method
First, a literature review was completed to identify key terms in sedentary behavior research. These key terms were then reviewed and modified by a Steering Committee formed by SBRN. Next, SBRN members were invited to contribute to this project and interested participants reviewed …

Combating Anemia And Other Iron Related Deficiencies Through Iron- Efficiency In Soybeans, Miranda Ruth, Bryan Hopkins
Combating Anemia And Other Iron Related Deficiencies Through Iron- Efficiency In Soybeans, Miranda Ruth, Bryan Hopkins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Plants uptake iron from the soil in a variety of ways. Dicots, like soybeans, primarily exude hydrogen (H+) ions and chemical reductants from their roots, which acidify the root zone and reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ that can then be utilized by the plant (Brown and Jolley 1989). Iron efficiency in soybeans results in increased dietary iron for those eating the beans. Anemia, which is due to a dietary lack of iron, is an extremely serious health problem that affects much of the world, especially developing countries. Globally, over 30% of the world suffers from this lack of dietary …

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a microscopic, apicomplexan parasite that can infect muscle or neural tissue, including the brain, in humans. While T. gondii infection has been associated with changes in mood, behavior, and cognition, the mechanism remains unclear. Recent evidence suggests that T. gondii may harvest folate from host neural cells. Reduced folate availability is associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and cognitive decline. We hypothesized that impairment in cognitive functioning in subjects seropositive for T. gondii might be associated with a reduction of folate availability in neural cells. We analyzed data from the third …

Each dialect group was stratified into three age groups (young, middle, older), and within each age group there were an equal number of males and females. The listener group included …
A Partner In Their Suffering: Gustav Klimt's Empowered Figure In Hope Ii, Hannah Elizabeth Miller
A Partner In Their Suffering: Gustav Klimt's Empowered Figure In Hope Ii, Hannah Elizabeth Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Although much of Gustav Klimt's work is well recognized, his painting Hope II (1907-1908) has received little attention in academic studies. Rejected by his peers on its initial exhibition, this work was found offensive by even his staunchest supporters. Second wave feminists have also been critical of his painting, finding in it an objectification of women. This is likely due in part to the central subject of the piece involving pregnancy. Klimt was unafraid to paint images that shocked and diverged from traditional aesthetic styles. During a time of rapid social change and development of the feminist movement, Klimt offered …
Active Control Of Cylindrical Shells Using The Weighted Sum Of Spatial Gradients (Wssg) Control Metric, Pegah Aslani
Active Control Of Cylindrical Shells Using The Weighted Sum Of Spatial Gradients (Wssg) Control Metric, Pegah Aslani
Theses and Dissertations
Cylindrical shells are common structures that are often used in industry, such as pipes, ducts, aircraft fuselages, rockets, submarine pressure hulls, electric motors and generators. In many applications it is desired to attenuate the sound radiated from the vibrating structure. There are both active and passive methods to achieve this purpose. However, at low frequencies passive methods are less effective and often an excessive amount of material is needed to achieve acceptable results. There have been a number of works regarding active control methods for this type of structure. In most cases a considerable number of error sensors and secondary …

Anthrax, Matrix Biology, And Angiogenesis: Capillary Morphogenesis Gene 2 Mediates Activity And Uptake Of Type Iv Collagen-Derived Anti-Angiogenic Peptides, Jordan Grant Finnell
Theses and Dissertations
Capillary Morphogenesis Gene 2 (CMG2) is a type I transmembrane, integrin-like receptor. It was originally identified as one of several genes upregulated during capillary formation. It was subsequently identified as one of two physiological anthrax toxin receptors, where CMG2 serves as a cell-surface receptor for anthrax toxin and mediates entry of the toxin into cells via clathrin-dependent endocytosis. Additionally, loss-of-function mutations in CMG2 cause the genetic disorder hyaline fibromatosis syndrome (HFS), where the core symptom is dysregulation of extracellular matrix homeostasis (ECM), including excessive accumulation of proteinaceous hyaline material; HFS clearly indicates that CMG2 plays an essential function in ECM …

Comparison Of Cytokine Expression And Bacterial Growth During Periparturient And Mid Lactation Mastitis In A Mouse Model, Rhonda Nicole Chronis
Theses and Dissertations
Clinical cases of bovine mastitis are most severe in the early stages of lactation. The causes of this increased propensity for severe mastitis during early lactation, compared to mid and late lactation are unclear. In order to better understand the early lactation immune response to mastitis, a murine model of mastitis was employed. Intramammary inoculation of a mastitis causing Escherichia coli strain was performed in lactating mice at various stages of lactation to model the immune response seen in cows during lactation. In our experiments, mice in the early stages of lactation exhibited altered mRNA expression of cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, …

Sound recordings of six children between the ages of 7;0 and 9;11 sampled at 30-minute intervals over a two-hour period of wearing an EPG sensor were perceptually evaluated to quantify the children's adaptation over time. Twenty native speakers of American English evaluated the pronunciation of a series of words with embedded stops and fricatives produced with and without an EPG sensor in place. When collapsed over speaker and stimulus type, listener ratings decreased significantly after inserting the EPG sensor. Ratings then increased significantly after the …
Physiological Attunement And Influence In Couples Therapy: Examining The Roots Of Therapeutic Presence, Julia Campbell Bernards
Physiological Attunement And Influence In Couples Therapy: Examining The Roots Of Therapeutic Presence, Julia Campbell Bernards
Theses and Dissertations
Extensive interdisciplinary common factor research has identified the therapeutic relationship as a consistent factor influencing therapeutic outcomes. We use Polyvagal and Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) theories to guide an examination of the physiological mechanisms at work in the therapeutic relationship. Both Polyvagal and IPNB theories provide understandings about how humans are neurophysiologically wired for social connection. Each points to a sense of safety as being essential for meaningful connection to occur and clarifies that physiological attunement is an observable indicator of interpersonal connection. In this study, we use these theories to guide an examination of therapist physiological influence on clients in …
The Unexpected Symbol Of The New Woman: Ella Ferris Pell's Salome, Megan Ashley Snow
The Unexpected Symbol Of The New Woman: Ella Ferris Pell's Salome, Megan Ashley Snow
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues that Ella Ferris Pell's 1890 painting, Salome, provides a unique interpretation of the ideals of the New Woman, specifically in terms of reclaiming female power through Salome's confidence in her sexuality. By examining the cultural context in which Pell exhibited her painting, as well as her background as an artist, I hope bring to the light the significant ways in which Pell's Salome participates in the construction of the New Woman in late nineteenth-century culture. Since Pell was an American woman who trained and exhibited in both the United States and France, this paper explores the …
The Rise Of The Listicle: Using Eye-Tracking And Signal Detection Theory To Measure This Growing Phenomenon, Jason Robert Freeman
The Rise Of The Listicle: Using Eye-Tracking And Signal Detection Theory To Measure This Growing Phenomenon, Jason Robert Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
As online technology continues to progress, the modes of communication through which content can be shared have exponentially grown. These include advances in navigational options for presenting information and news online. Though the listicle has been around for centuries, the internet has proliferated its growth, as content producers rely on its structure as a vehicle for sharing information. This research shows that in the case of listicles, format had no direct effect on recall, however, participants who had a greater interest in the content showed significantly higher levels of memory sensitivity. This critical finding suggests that news outlets and content …
