Wasatch Front Atmospheric Deposition Reflects Regional Desert Dust And Local Anthropogenic Sources, Michael Max Goodman Mar 2019

Wasatch Front Atmospheric Deposition Reflects Regional Desert Dust And Local Anthropogenic Sources, Michael Max Goodman

Theses and Dissertations

Dust originating from dry lakes contributes harmful and toxic elements to downwind urban areas and mountain snowpack that is compounded by local contaminant inputs from anthropogenic sources. To evaluate dust contributions to an urban area from regional playas, we sampled playa dust sources, urban dust deposition, and snow dust deposition in central Utah, USA. Samples were analyzed for grain size, mineralogy, and chemistry. Bulk mineralogy between playa, urban, and snow dust samples was similar, with silicate, carbonate, and evaporite minerals. Grain size distribution between fine playa, urban, and snow dust particles was also similar. Elements found at high concentrations in …

Pas Kinase And Tor, Controllers Of Cell Growth And Proliferation, Brooke Jasmyn Cozzens Mar 2019

Pas Kinase And Tor, Controllers Of Cell Growth And Proliferation, Brooke Jasmyn Cozzens

Theses and Dissertations

Nutrient sensing kinases lie at the heart of cellular health and homeostasis, allowing cells to quickly adapt to changing environments. Target of Rapamycin (TOR) and PAS kinase (PASK, or PASKIN) are two such nutrient kinases, conserved from yeast to man. In yeast, these kinases each have paralogs. The two TOR paralogs in yeast mimic the mammalian TORC1 and TORC2 complexes, except both Tor1 and Tor2 may contribute to TORC1 or TORC2 function. The two PAS kinase paralogs are paired with the TOR paralogs, meaning that both Psk1 and Psk2 regulate TORC1, while Psk2 suppresses a temperature-sensitive allele of Tor2. Herein …

Ribosomally Synthesized And Post-Translationally Modified Peptides As Potential Scaffolds For Peptide Engineering, Devan Bursey Mar 2019

Ribosomally Synthesized And Post-Translationally Modified Peptides As Potential Scaffolds For Peptide Engineering, Devan Bursey

Theses and Dissertations

Peptides are small proteins that are crucial in many biological pathways such as antimicrobial defense, hormone signaling, and virulence. They often exhibit tight specificity for their targets and therefore have great therapeutic potential. Many peptide-based therapeutics are currently available, and the demand for this type of drug is expected to continue to increase. In order to satisfy the growing demand for peptide-based therapeutics, new engineering approaches to generate novel peptides should be developed. Ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) are a group of peptides that have the potential to be effective scaffolds for in vivo peptide engineering projects. These …

Diet For A Changing Climate: Food For Thought, Emilee Bell Feb 2019

Diet For A Changing Climate: Food For Thought, Emilee Bell

Children's Book and Media Review

As the world faces crises of hunger as well as environmental disaster, the authors claim one of the most impactful ways to avert total disaster is to take “eat local” to the extreme. Sidewalk cracks, boat hulls, and abandoned lots are the “foragermarkets” of the future. As incredible as it sounds, Mihaly and Heavenrich stand solidly on science and history: wild food sources, while uncomfortable to the modern eater, are packed with nutrients only whiffed in groceries today. Styled for the middle-grade reader, Mihaly and Heavenrich include legal alerts, safety tips, and even recipes to guide students on the path …

Falling From Grace: Hprt Is Not Suitable As An Endogenous Control For Cancer-Related Studies, Michelle H. Townsend, Abigail M. Felsted, Zac E. Ence, Stephen R. Piccolo, Richard A. Robison Feb 2019

Falling From Grace: Hprt Is Not Suitable As An Endogenous Control For Cancer-Related Studies, Michelle H. Townsend, Abigail M. Felsted, Zac E. Ence, Stephen R. Piccolo, Richard A. Robison

Faculty Publications

HPRT is a housekeeping enzyme involved in recycling guanine and inosine in the purine salvage pathway. As a housekeeping gene, HPRT has been widely used as an endogenous control for molecular studies evaluating changes in gene expression. Yet, recent evidence has shown that HPRT exhibits high variability within malignant samples. We designed this study to determine whether this observed upregulation is consistently found, therefore rendering hprt an unsuitable normalization control in cancer. Utilizing protein and RNA-seq expression, we found that malignant and normal patient samples vary significantly both within the same tissue type and across organ sites. Upon staining for …

Islam is a major world religion and the Muslim population is one of the fastest growing religious populations in the Western world, including in the United States. However, few research studies have examined the lived religious experience of U.S. Muslim families. Much of the attention on Islam among researchers and the media tends to be on controversial aspects of the religion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the unique religious practice of the month-long fast of Ramadan, especially its perceived role on marital and familial relationships from an insider’s perspective. Content analysis of in-depth, qualitative interviews of twenty …

Existential Interventions For Adolescent Suicidality: Practical Interventions To Target The Root Causes Of Adolescent Distress, Ragan Lybbert, Samuel Ryland, Roy A. Bean Feb 2019

Existential Interventions For Adolescent Suicidality: Practical Interventions To Target The Root Causes Of Adolescent Distress, Ragan Lybbert, Samuel Ryland, Roy A. Bean

Faculty Publications

In this work we discuss common forms of treatment for suicidality and suicidality among adolescents. Vastly pervasive, crisis intervention-based treatment is found throughout nearly all suicidality treatments regardless of client age or intervention site. Crisis intervention-based approaches often overlook many crucial elements of suicidality in adolescents. We therefore explore elements of existential therapy and their potential merit in treatment for suicide among adolescents. These include existential angst and despair, meaninglessness and isolation. These elements are strong predictors of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in adolescents. While the common crisis-based treatment appropriately addresses immediate safety needs, it can neglect and even exacerbate …

Beyond Religious Rigidities: Religious Firmness And Religious Flexibility As Complementary Loyalties In Faith Transmission, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Kate P. Babcock, Betsy H. Barrow, Andrew H. Rose Feb 2019

Beyond Religious Rigidities: Religious Firmness And Religious Flexibility As Complementary Loyalties In Faith Transmission, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Kate P. Babcock, Betsy H. Barrow, Andrew H. Rose

Faculty Publications

Research has found that intergenerational transmission of religiosity results in higher family functioning and improved family relationships. Yet the Pew Research Center found that 44% of Americans reported that they had left the religious affiliation of their childhood. And 78% of the expanding group of those who identify as religiously unaffiliated (“Nones”) reported that they were raised in “highly religious families.” We suggest that this may be, in part, associated with religious parents exercising excessive firmness with inadequate flexibility (rigidity). We used a multiphase, systematic, team-based process to code 8000+ pages of in-depth interviews from 198 Christian, Jewish, and Muslim …

Emergence Of Collective Behaviors In Hub-Based Colonies Using Grammatical Evolution And Behavior Trees, Aadesh Neupane Feb 2019

Emergence Of Collective Behaviors In Hub-Based Colonies Using Grammatical Evolution And Behavior Trees, Aadesh Neupane

Theses and Dissertations

Animals such as bees, ants, birds, fish, and others are able to efficiently perform complex coordinated tasks like foraging, nest-selection, flocking and escaping predators without centralized control or coordination. These complex collective behaviors are the result of emergence. Conventionally, mimicking these collective behaviors with robots requires researchers to study actual behaviors, derive mathematical models, and implement these models as algorithms. Since the conventional approach is very time consuming and cumbersome, this thesis uses an emergence-based method for the efficient evolution of collective behaviors. Our method, Grammatical Evolution algorithm for Evolution of Swarm bEhaviors (GEESE), is based on Grammatical Evolution (GE) …

An Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), was used to test for actor and partner effects, thereby accounting for the non-independent nature of the data. Two separate APIM models were tested with Male Attachment predicting Female Relationship Quality and Female Attachment predicting Male Relationship Quality. Results indicate that own attachment …

The Sap Link: A Controller Architecture For Secure Industrial Control Systems, Matthew Cody Wyman Feb 2019

The Sap Link: A Controller Architecture For Secure Industrial Control Systems, Matthew Cody Wyman

Theses and Dissertations

Industrial Control Systems are essential to modern life. They are utilized in hundreds of processes including power distribution, water treatment, manufacturing, traffic management, and amusement park ride control. These systems are an essential part of modern life and if compromised, could result in significant economic loss, safety impacts, damage to the environment, and even loss of life. Unfortunately, many of these systems are not properly secured from a cyber attack. It is likely that a well-funded and motivated attack from a nation-state will successfully compromise an industrial control system's network. As cyber war becomes more prevalent, it is becoming more …

Supportive Hand-Holding Attenuates Pupillary Responses To Stress In Adult Couples, Wendy C. Birmingham, Tyler C. Graff, Steven G. Luke Feb 2019

Supportive Hand-Holding Attenuates Pupillary Responses To Stress In Adult Couples, Wendy C. Birmingham, Tyler C. Graff, Steven G. Luke

Faculty Publications

Background

Social relationships, particularly marriage, have been shown to ameliorate the potentially pathogenic impact of stressful events but prior research has been mostly aimed at downstream effects, with less research on real-time reactivity. Pupillometry is an innovative procedure that allows us to see the effects of acute stress in real time. The muscles that control pupil size are linked to the autonomic nervous system, so that when stressed, the pupils dilate; this occurs within 200ms. This quick response allows us to see the immediate effects of acute stress on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and the real-time effects of social …

Spanish Attempts To Apprehend Lewis And Clark, Jay H. Buckley, Dan Sturdevant Feb 2019

Spanish Attempts To Apprehend Lewis And Clark, Jay H. Buckley, Dan Sturdevant

Faculty Publications

American General James Wilkinson–a general who never won a battle or lost a court-martial—served as the ranking military leader of the United States while moonlighting as secret agent #13 on imperial Spain’s payroll. A traitor to his country, the vainglorious general repeatedly revealed American military secrets to the Spanish from the 1790s to the early decades of the nineteenth century in exchange for silver dollars and land grants. Astonishingly, Wilkinson’s full range of espionage did not surface until after his death because Wilkinson instructed his Spanish contacts never to reveal any of his written communications to others.

In the midst of trying to correct organ failures, clinicians may neglect to carefully consider what the patient is experiencing: to be on the brink of death, be unable to speak, be stripped naked, have strangers enter the room and simultaneously do things to their bodies without explanation, have tubes inserted into multiple orifices, have their arms restrained, hear a cacophony of disorienting bedside alarms whose meaning lies beyond them, and to be poked, and prodded—all while family is torn away. Compounding these facts, patients often have no memory or understanding of how they ended up in this horrifying situation. …

Faculty Publications

Purpose: Decades of research have examined the impact of exposure to nonexplicit portrayals of sexual content in media. There is only one meta-analysis on this topic, which suggests that exposure to “sexy media” has little to no effect on sexual behavior. There are a number of limitations to the existing meta-analysis, and the purpose of this updated meta-analysis was to examine associations between exposure to sexual media and users' attitudes and sexual behavior.

Methods: A thorough literature search was conducted to find relevant articles. Each study was coded for associations between exposure to sexual media and one of six outcomes …

Tourism In Utah As An Economic Development Tool, Jhana Aristondo Jan 2019

Tourism In Utah As An Economic Development Tool, Jhana Aristondo

Marriott Student Review

Tourism in Utah is largely driven by seasonal recreation at its variety of natural-heritage resources through all its seasons. This study uses empirical evidence and empirical testing to explain different variables to examine if there is a long run relationship between economic development and tourism in the state of Utah. Traditionally, in order to measure the impact that tourism has had over economic growth, variables such as the nominal and real GDP among other income variables have been used and just give one-sided economic approach. However, what can be said about tourism as an economic development tool?

This study will …
