Treatment Failure Rates In Group Versus Individual Treatment Using The Oq-45: An Archival Replication, Cameron Todd Alldredge
Treatment Failure Rates In Group Versus Individual Treatment Using The Oq-45: An Archival Replication, Cameron Todd Alldredge
Theses and Dissertations
In routine outcome monitoring (ROM), the rate and timing of treatment failure alerts has been related to the success of feedback in past randomized clinical trials. In a recent OQ-45 feedback study, Burlingame and colleagues (2018) found that the rates and timing of not-on-track (NOT) progress alerts in group treatment were different than those reported for individual treatment. Using data from 58 different therapy groups and 374 patients, NOT progress alerts occurred at 186% of the rate reported by Shimokawa et al. (2010) when they examined over 6,000 patients receiving individual therapy at the same clinics. Another significant difference was …
Difference Of Opinion: Spousal Influence On Cancer Risk-Reducing Behavior, Wendy C. Birmingham, Maija Reblin, Wendy Kohlmann, Tyler Graff
Difference Of Opinion: Spousal Influence On Cancer Risk-Reducing Behavior, Wendy C. Birmingham, Maija Reblin, Wendy Kohlmann, Tyler Graff
Faculty Publications
Marriage is consistently associated with better health outcomes. Spouses' attempts to influence partners' lifestyle and general health behaviors may contribute to this effect, although partners may not be aware of this influence. Spousal worry of a cancer diagnosis for an at-risk partner may factor into attempts to influence. An examination of spousal worry and influence on lifestyle choices, general health behaviors, and cancer screening adherence for partners at higher risk of colorectal cancer may shed light on spousal influence and partners' perceptions of influence. Methods: A mixed-method design assessed cancer worry and spousal influence for risk-reducing behavior in first-degree relatives …
Genetic Structure Of The Big Summit Herd And Neighboring Wild Horse Populations Inhabiting Herd Management Areas Of Oregon, Ketaki Deshpande, Evelyn Perez, Natalie Leyva, Merly Suarez, Deetta K. Mills
Genetic Structure Of The Big Summit Herd And Neighboring Wild Horse Populations Inhabiting Herd Management Areas Of Oregon, Ketaki Deshpande, Evelyn Perez, Natalie Leyva, Merly Suarez, Deetta K. Mills
Western North American Naturalist
Feral horses roaming North America are distinct not only because of their acclimatization to the wild but also because of their diversified ancestry. The wild horses inhabiting the Ochoco National Forest near Prineville, Oregon, are one of the remaining wild mustang herds and are protected by the Wild Horse and Burro Acts of 1971 and 1978. With deterioration of their rangeland, drought, vegetation conditions, human encroachment, fencing off of grazing lands, competition with wildlife, and other livestock grazing on public lands, a critical balance between conserving the natural ecology of rangelands and protecting and managing the wild horses needs to …

Physical Education Teacher Education (Pete) Majors' Perceptions And Opinions Of Appropriate Instructional Practices: A Qualitative Approach, David C. Barney, Liana Davis
Faculty Publications
Physical education (PE) teachers are responsible for helping students learn in their classes. Unfortunately, many students have been exposed to games and activities that were inappropriate, thus negatively affecting their learning in PE class. Inappropriate instructional practices have been a common occurrence for many students. One group that can help curb the inclusion of inappropriate instructional practices are Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) majors. This study investigated PETE majors’ beliefs of certain instructional practices that have been implemented in PE games and activities. Many of the instructional practices were inappropriate. The PETE majors’ felt that dodge ball, relay games, and …
Noise Control Of Vacuum-Assisted Toilets, Michael Thomas Rose
Noise Control Of Vacuum-Assisted Toilets, Michael Thomas Rose
Theses and Dissertations
Vacuum-assisted toilets make use of a large pressure difference between the ambient pressure and a vacuum tank to transport waste from the toilet bowl to the septic tank. This process requires 98% less water per flush making it an attractive product for transport vehicles such as airplanes, cruise ships, and trains. Unfortunately, the water savings come at the cost of high noise levels. This thesis investigates the acoustic characteristics of a vacuum-assisted toilet flush and several methods to reduce the radiated noise. Some methods include changing rinse parameters such as rinse pressure, rinse length, and rinse timing, adding structural damping …

Class In America: The Future Of Work In America, Emillee Bell
Children's Book and Media Review
What will careers look like in 2050? Harris winds her way through the past to unravel the economic trends of today to predict the future work infrastructure. The middle class, made possible by the industrial revolution and several wars in the past two centuries, erodes quickly in the face of the technological revolution, globalization, and rise of the gig economy. Generation after generation are increasingly prone to switch jobs and even careers throughout their lives. Retirement is becoming a thing of the past, as the life expectancy in the United States increases. Innovative solutions for future employment, benefits, and careers …
Development And Validation Of A Vibration-Based Sound Power Measurement Method, Cameron Bennion Jones
Development And Validation Of A Vibration-Based Sound Power Measurement Method, Cameron Bennion Jones
Theses and Dissertations
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provides no vibration-based sound power measurement standard that provides Precision (Grade 1) results. Current standards that provide Precision (Grade 1) results require known acoustic environments or complex setups. This thesis details the Vibration Based Radiation Mode (VBRM) method as one approach that could potentially be used to develop a Precision (Grade 1) standard. The VBRM method uses measured surface velocities of a structure and combines them with the radiation resistance matrix to calculate sound power. In this thesis the VBRM method is used to measure the sound power of a single-plate and multiple plate …
Apparent Extinction Of Native Mussels In Lower Mill Creek And Mid-Jordan River, Ut, David C. Richards, Theron Miller
Apparent Extinction Of Native Mussels In Lower Mill Creek And Mid-Jordan River, Ut, David C. Richards, Theron Miller
Western North American Naturalist
Native mussels likely occurred in Mill Creek and the Jordan River, Utah, in the past. However, humaninduced impacts have virtually eliminated the possibility of their continued existence in these waters. We conducted an intensive native mussel survey upstream and downstream of a water reclamation facility discharge into Mill Creek and the Jordan River to determine its effects on mussel populations. The survey was conducted from September to October 2017 and resulted in approximately 7.6 m3 of >4 mm-sized substrate particles being thoroughly examined at near 100% efficiency. We then used statistical models to estimate population densities as a function …

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2019
Rheumatic heart disease is a deadly condition pervasive in tropical third world countries like Samoa. In order to prevent rheumatic heart disease, we seek to understand the origins of rheumatic heart disease. Specifically, we want to understand if streptococcal infections of the skin, commonly called impetigo, could be responsible for triggering rheumatic heart disease.

Coolsculpting Or Cryolipolysis: A Guide For Primary Care Practitioners, Miryam Harper, Jane Lassetter Phd, Rn
Student Works
A desire for the ideal body image has influenced development of a non-surgical body shaping procedure known as CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis. The purpose of this clinical feature is to inform nurse practitioners regarding the risks and benefits of cryolipolysis so they can educate their patients. Cryolipolysis as a safe, effective method of reducing small areas of unwanted fat. Side effects are minimal and include pain, redness, bruising, and swelling. Results are seen within twelve weeks, but long-term effects are unknown. There are contraindications, and it is relatively expensive; however, it may be a safer option than invasive surgery. Germination And Growth Of Grass Species In Soil Contaminated By Drill Cuttings, Huisen Zhu, Yang Gao, Deying Li
Western North American Naturalist
Grass species are important for phytoremediation on native prairies affected by petroleum oil production. One of the major limitations in remediation and reclamation using plant species is seed germination failure. The objective of this study was to evaluate grass seed germination and seedling growth affected by drill cuttings. Sixty-five grass species (including 5 cereal crops) were included in the study. Germination of all species was reduced by drill cuttings. The reduction in germination ranged from 9.2% to 100%. Two species were tolerant, 18 species were moderately tolerant, 27 species were moderately sensitive, and 18 species were sensitive. Based on tolerance …
Trips-Plus In China: How The United States Can Use Trips To Strengthen Trademark Minimum Standards In An Fta With China, Neal Hillam
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The United States and China have attempted to make a free trade agreement on several occasions over the last few years. A potential amalgamation between the two countries is of particular interest because the United States and China are two of the world’s largest economic powers. This paper discusses what trademark minimum standards should be placed in the agreement and proposes that explicit adherence to TRIPS be made the backbone. The paper will identify several specific trademark problems in China and how stricter adherence to TRIPS can abate these internal issues. The proposed method of using TRIPS as the backbone …

In China's Vanguard Civilization: Is There Shelter For The Third World?, Tseggai Isaac
Comparative Civilizations Review
This paper looks at China’s civilizational and modernization heritages. Its ancient civilization is described as the first phase of China’s civilization. In the first phase, China’s Civilization was stellar, and creative, possessing well–structured bureaucratic institutions with phenomenal capacities for artistic production and the advancement of high sciences. The second phase of China’s civilization reflects its current modernization, one inspired and operationalized by Marxism and Maoism. The earlier phase of China’s Civilization was aloof, benign, self-sufficient, reticent and reluctant to attract untoward global attention. This ancient civilization, rooted in the organic soil of China itself, was holistic, robust on its own …

Trusting The Process: Amendments To The Supreme Court Process And Their Implications On The Essential Attributes Of The Judiciary In Today's Political Environment, Bailey Swainston
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
The Supreme Court nomination process evolved over the past years to include changes not specified in the Constitution. Because of the obstruction and filibuster of nominees by the Senate minority parties, the “nuclear option” was instituted and effectively modified the process. The life long tenures of the Justices, the increase of public attention to the process and the Supreme Court’s decisions is causing nominees to face an unnecessarily difficult path to a seat in the Supreme Court. We address this issue by discussing (1) the recent changes to the process and their effects, (2) the consequences of life-long tenure and …
The Utah Unlawful Detainer Statute: A Call For Reform, Margaret Kelly
The Utah Unlawful Detainer Statute: A Call For Reform, Margaret Kelly
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Utah’s Unlawful Detainer Statute largely favors landlords in matters of eviction. The current statute allows evicted tenants only 0-3 days to move off a premise, requires evicted tenants to pay triple damages, and gives tenants a limited time to claim their belongings. Compared to other states, Utah is severe in its treatment of evicted tenants. This paper calls for a reform to the Utah Unlawful Detainer Statute, which will make the process of eviction more reasonable for evicted tenants throughout the state.
The War On Drugs And The Case For Rehabilitation, Christopher Johnson, Jackson Hoopes
The War On Drugs And The Case For Rehabilitation, Christopher Johnson, Jackson Hoopes
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
From slavery to Jim Crow to current issues with mass incarceration, America has a long-standing history with oppression and racial prejudice. While it’s easy for many to think racism, particularly at an institutional level, to be a thing of the past, a variety of evidences speak to the contrary. With President Nixon’s War on Drugs, criminality became federally sanctioned way to oppress minorities through sentencing discrepancies in crack and powdered cocaine. In conjunction with that, the privatization of prisons has led to the Prison Industrial Complex, further incentivizing incarceration as a means of industry and commerce. Now we are faced …
A Polymorphic Approach To Esports Betting, Chadohl Kang
A Polymorphic Approach To Esports Betting, Chadohl Kang
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
With the Supreme Court ruling in Murphy v. NCAA, states can legalize sports betting. Many states have chosen to do so. Unfortunately, it is still unclear whether electronic sports, or Esports, is included in the legislations. This is due in part to society not seeing Esports as a true sport. For a growing, nearly billion dollar industry, this isn’t good news. The polymorphic approach can be a resolution to this situation. The polymorphic approach to sports allows states to decide if it is in their interest to view Esports as a sport in betting legislation. Based on the possible revenue …
In And Out Of Place: Civilization Interaction And The Making Of Australia In Oceania And Asia, Jeremy C. A. Smith
In And Out Of Place: Civilization Interaction And The Making Of Australia In Oceania And Asia, Jeremy C. A. Smith
Comparative Civilizations Review
The making of Euro-Australia occurred against the backdrop of two dimensions of its historical constitution. First, it occurred on the back of Britain’s entry into the Oceanian world and its intercivilizational encounters with Pacific cultures. The second dimension was the appropriation of the land of a complex and internally diverse Aboriginal civilization and suppression of its social world view. This was vital to a lasting sense of ambivalence in Australian identity and in the relations of the Commonwealth of Australia with island states in the Pacific. After Federation (1901), Australia became more independent in the context of devolution of the …

Comparing Academic Vocabulary List (Avl) Frequency Bands To Leveled Biology And History Texts, Lynne Crandall
Comparing Academic Vocabulary List (Avl) Frequency Bands To Leveled Biology And History Texts, Lynne Crandall
Theses and Dissertations
For decades, teachers and language learners have been concerned about matching the difficulty level of texts to the proficiency level of learners in order to achieve comprehensible input, which leads to effective learning. Some leveling systems and research use word lists as part of their leveling processes, particularly the Academic Word List. The Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) has not been explored yet as a leveling tool, so this study aims to address this lack of research by examining how the AVL words vary in cumulative frequency bands and also in separate frequency bands with regard to level and topic. The …

Self-Determination Theory And Student Emotional Engagement In Higher Education, Tarah Brittany Ikahihifo
Self-Determination Theory And Student Emotional Engagement In Higher Education, Tarah Brittany Ikahihifo
Theses and Dissertations
Studies have shown that increased student engagement is correlated with improved learning outcomes and overall positive results for students. While engagement can be viewed as a precursor to other outcomes, it should also be examined as an outcome itself. To increase student engagement and improve the learning experience for students, we must understand which factors can facilitate engagement and how educators can positively affect these factors. This research explored the influence of three proposed facilitators of engagement: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Self-determination theory, a theory of motivation, posits that these are three innate psychological needs that must be fulfilled to …
