Lgbt+ Discrimination In The Workplace, Rachel Winters
Lgbt+ Discrimination In The Workplace, Rachel Winters
Marriott Student Review
Although nearly everyone has faced some kind of unfair treatment in the workplace, members of the LGBT community often deal with much worse treatment—to the point of discrimination. After learning about the benefits of anti-discrimination policies for your employees and the company, you will realize that there is no reason you shouldn't—and every reason you should—implement LGBT-supportive policies at your company. The benefits include increase profitability, productiveness, work satisfaction, and employee retention.
Conflict Experienced By Lds Working Mothers, Sarah L. Maxfield
Conflict Experienced By Lds Working Mothers, Sarah L. Maxfield
Marriott Student Review
This article analyzes and attempts to answer the question of what conflict LDS working mothers experience. It does this through a literature review, analyzing the different studies that have been conducted on the subject by looking at their findings, scope, and assessment of the situation. This article summarizes and extrapolates on the current academic literature surrounding working moms, religiosity, conflict, and the role of sanctification as one method of combating it.
The Impact Of Spending Time Alone On Emerging Adults' Mental Well-Being, Lisa Prescott Dixon
The Impact Of Spending Time Alone On Emerging Adults' Mental Well-Being, Lisa Prescott Dixon
Family Perspectives
Purposefully spending time alone with the intention of self-care can lead to mental health benefits for emerging adults. However, when the motivation for spending time alone is rooted in the desire to be socially avoidant, emerging adults may find themselves becoming isolated and may experience increased levels of anxiety and/or depression. Effective solitude excludes any other individuals and the use of social media. As emerging adults purposefully spend time alone, they are creating opportunities for self-reflection that may then lead to the strengthened development of emotional regulation skills. The ability to emotionally regulate provides the necessary tools to cope with …

The Impact Of Sexual Initiation And Motivation On Couples' Sexual Frequency, Bethany A. Jorgensen
The Impact Of Sexual Initiation And Motivation On Couples' Sexual Frequency, Bethany A. Jorgensen
Family Perspectives
For couples, motivations for sexual intimacy, initiation attempts at sexual intercourse, and the desired frequency of sexual intercourse can impact the relational outcomes of a relationship. Emotional intimacy, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction are closely intertwined for couples and can play a significant role in the dynamics of their relationship. This literature review first discusses sexual initiation and its impact on sexual frequency and then the connection of motivation on the emotional climate of sexual intimacy and couples’ sexual frequency.

The Role Of The Chaperone Cct In Assembling Cell Signaling Complexes, Nicole C. Tensmeyer
The Role Of The Chaperone Cct In Assembling Cell Signaling Complexes, Nicole C. Tensmeyer
Theses and Dissertations
In order to function, proteins must be folded into their native shape. While this can sometimes occur spontaneously, the process can be hindered by thermodynamic barriers, trapped intermediates, and aggregation prone hydrophobic interactions. Molecular chaperones are proteins that help client proteins or substrates overcome these barriers so that they can be folded properly. One such chaperone is the chaperonin CCT, a large MDa protein made up of 16 paralogous subunits that form a double ring structure. CCT encapsulates its substrates in a central cavity, where they are sequestered and folded, using ATP binding and hydrolysis to drive conformational changes in …
Variable Uptake Of Selenium: Exposing Bryophytes In-Situ To A Se-Gradient Watershed, Del Wayne R. Nimmo, Scott J. Herrmann, James S. Carsella, Igor V. Melnykov
Variable Uptake Of Selenium: Exposing Bryophytes In-Situ To A Se-Gradient Watershed, Del Wayne R. Nimmo, Scott J. Herrmann, James S. Carsella, Igor V. Melnykov
Western North American Naturalist
We investigated the uptake of selenium (Se) at 14 sites in a Se-rich watershed, using an aquatic bryophyte (Hygrohypnum ochraceum). We expressed uptake using the symbol Kd to underscore the relationships between Se in water and Se in plants as “partitioning coefficients” related to the bases of aquatic food chains. A 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed with Kd as the dependent variable and season and stream segment (location) as main effects. Selenium concentrations, measured as dissolved Se, total Se, and pore water Se, were also examined. There were significant differences in Kd values …
Saving Our Backs: Reducing Low Back Forces, Investigating Pain, And Observing Multifidus, Robert Eugene Larson
Saving Our Backs: Reducing Low Back Forces, Investigating Pain, And Observing Multifidus, Robert Eugene Larson
Theses and Dissertations
BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are among the most injured workers in the United States. This is due to the high rate of patient handling. The low back is the most injured in this population. This study observed biomechanical factors and how these factors affect low back and ground reaction forces. This study further investigated pain and its relationship to low back force, multifidus cross-sectional area, and multifidus activation in healthcare workers. METHODS: The 45 participants included 10 healthy subjects in the preliminary study and 35 active healthcare workers in the main study. Subjects filled out the VAS to determine current pain …

Immigrants face many challenges when transitioning to life in a new country, and access to their traditional food can assist in facilitating a smoother transition. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact that access to traditional food has on the perception of health and well-being of Jamaican immigrants to the United States. Methods: Using a qualitative descriptive design, twenty Jamaicans (10 in New York; 10 in Utah) participated in semi-structured interviews, which were transcribed and analyzed. Results: Participants expressed a preference for traditional food. New York participants had greater access to Jamaican food and rated their health …
Short-Term Effects Of Increased Body Mass And Distribution On Plantar Shear, Postural Control, And Gait Kinetics: Implications For Obesity, Hwigeum Jeong
Theses and Dissertations
Context: Obesity is a growing global health concern. The increased body mass and altered mass distribution associated with obesity may be related to increases in plantar shear that putatively leads to physical functional deficits. Therefore, measurement of plantar shear may provide unique insights on the effects of body mass and body distribution on physical function or performance. Purpose: 1) To investigate the effects of body mass and distribution on plantar shear; 2) To examine how altered plantar shear influences postural control and gait kinetics. Hypothesis: 1) a weighted vest forward distributed (FV) would shift the center of pressure (CoP) location …

Online Dialogue In Response To Disclosures Of Intimate Partner Violence, Bria Nicole Davies
Theses and Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) impacts the lives of millions of individuals, devastating survivors, and damaging families. Many survivors are unsure of how to get help, and many have limited access to resources. In recent years, those affected by IPV have turned online for answers and support, including forums such as Reddit, to anonymously disclose their experiences. This study examined the dialogue online between survivors of violence and those who respond to their posts on Reddit. The aim is to better understand the kinds of conversations and responses that are occurring in online communities discussing IPV. Analysis of the domestic violence …
Vulnerability Analysis Of Infrastructure Systems, Sean Theodore Lane
Vulnerability Analysis Of Infrastructure Systems, Sean Theodore Lane
Theses and Dissertations
Complex cyber-physical systems have become fundamental to modern society by effectively providing critical services and improving efficiency in various domains. Unfortunately, as systems become more connected and more complex, they also can become more vulnerable and less robust. As a result, various failure modes become more common and easily triggered from both unanticipated and malicious perturbations. Research has been conducted in the area of vulnerability analysis for cyber-physical systems, to assist in locating these possible vulnerabilities before they can fail. I present two case studies on different forms of critical infrastructure systems to identify vulnerabilities and understand how external perturbations …

A Qualitative Exploration Of Successful High School Baseball Coaches Silence During Practice, Patrick Mcgaha, David C. Barney
Faculty Publications
For athletic coaches, there are many methods to coach their athletes. One method that may not be as common or even thought of as coaching, is silence. Silence is basically, when the coach does not speak, but is thinking of specific team, player, and competitor items. The purpose of this study was to interview consistently successful high school baseball coaches with an emphasis on their silence as a coaching behavior. Five successful high school baseball coaches in the southeastern region of the United States were interviewed. Generally, it was found that these baseball coaches were strategizing, thinking of baseball related …

Automated 3d Reconstruction Using Optimized View-Planning Algorithms For Iterative Development Of Structure-From-Motion Models, Samuel Arce, Cory Vernon, Joshua Hammond, Valerie Newell, Joseph Janson, Kevin Franke, John Hedengren
Faculty Publications
Unsupervised machine learning algorithms (clustering, genetic, and principal component analysis) automate Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) missions as well as the creation and refinement of iterative 3D photogrammetric models with a next best view (NBV) approach. The novel approach uses Structure-from-Motion (SfM) to achieve convergence to a specified orthomosaic resolution by identifying edges in the point cloud and planning cameras that “view” the holes identified by edges without requiring an initial model. This iterative UAV photogrammetric method successfully runs in various Microsoft AirSim environments. Simulated ground sampling distance (GSD) of models reaches as low as 3.4 cm per pixel, and generally, …
Variation In Masculinities And Fathering Behaviors: A Cross-National Comparison Of The United States And Canada, Kevin Shafer, Richard J. Petts, Casey Scheibling
Variation In Masculinities And Fathering Behaviors: A Cross-National Comparison Of The United States And Canada, Kevin Shafer, Richard J. Petts, Casey Scheibling
Faculty Publications
Research continues to examine the barriers to and facilitators of positive fathering behaviors. One area recently addressed by researchers focuses on the relationship between masculine norm adherence and father involvement. Yet, little work has examined cross-national variability in this relationship—despite differences in gender norms, fathering expectations, and social policies across countries. The present study considers possible differences in the relationship between masculine norm adherence and fathering behaviors in the United States and Canada—two rich, multiethnic countries with many similarities but some distinct policy and family support differences. Using data from fathers in Canada (n = 2057) and the United …
Do You Feel In Control? Sexual Desire, Sexual Passion Expression, And Associations With Perceived Compulsivity To Pornography And Pornography Use Frequency, Nathan D. Leonhardt, Dean M. Busby, Brian J. Willoughby
Do You Feel In Control? Sexual Desire, Sexual Passion Expression, And Associations With Perceived Compulsivity To Pornography And Pornography Use Frequency, Nathan D. Leonhardt, Dean M. Busby, Brian J. Willoughby
Faculty Publications
Previous scholars have found that when individuals feel that pornography use is uncontrollable, it is linked to more extreme negative outcomes than frequency of use. With a Mechanical Turk sample of 1421 individuals, we used structural equation modeling to evaluate how multiple aspects of sexual desire (sexual drive and dyadic desire) and multiple aspects of sexual passion expression (harmonious, obsessive, and inhibited) were associated with both pornography use frequency and perceived compulsivity to pornography. In general, sexual desire was more connected to pornography use and sexual passion was more connected to perceived compulsivity. Specifically, sexual drive was associated with higher …
Poe Teaching Readers To Solve It Themselves, Grace Cosby
Poe Teaching Readers To Solve It Themselves, Grace Cosby
Student Works
Edgar Allan Poe wrote many stories that featured different types of unreliable narrators. These narrators were essential to Poe’s goal of teaching his audience to take more active roles in the stories. Insanity, ulterior motives, and lack of knowledge all contribute to making a narrator unreliable. “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Tell Tale Heart,” and “The Cask of Amontillado” are all short stories in which Poe implemented a different unreliable narrator to show readers how to pay more attention to a story. With little guidance from Poe or the narrator, readers must put together what is true and …
Social Withdrawal Associated With Regret And Fulfillment In Three Long-Term Care Facilities, Melanie Mei Yukie Serrao
Social Withdrawal Associated With Regret And Fulfillment In Three Long-Term Care Facilities, Melanie Mei Yukie Serrao
Theses and Dissertations
The study of social withdrawal continues to grow among younger samples, including childhood, adolescence, and emerging adulthood. Little research has addressed socially withdrawn older adults, despite the various losses, declines, and changes experienced by those in later life and their known benefits resulting from social interactions. Shy, avoidant, or unsocial individuals at younger ages may withdraw and possibly miss out on important opportunities; as a result, when they are grown, these same socially withdrawn individuals may experience greater regret and lower fulfillment in later life. Further, socially withdrawn older adults residing in long-term care (LTC) facilities may have more time …
The “New Woman” And The Woman’S Exponent, Carol Cornwall Madsen
The “New Woman” And The Woman’S Exponent, Carol Cornwall Madsen
BYU Studies
Economically, politically, socially, and theologically, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were known for being insular and cohesive at a time when the United States was stretching its boundaries and developing unifying communication and transportation networks across the continent. The concept of Manifest Destiny was imbibed by the young republic, and rugged individualism became a symbol of the adventurous entrepreneurs who saw a bounteous future in the great American West, especially with the addition of Mexican territory in 1848 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. The Church was clearly out of sync with …

I study the history of women’s voting rights in Utah. For the past two years, I’ve been the historical director for Better Days 2020, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to popularize Utah women’s history. The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of Utah women’s first votes, the centennial of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, and the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, all important parts of the long struggle for equal suffrage in the United States. So this anniversary year is a golden opportunity to learn about women in history who fought for equality, spoke …
“Experimental Proof Of The Ever Blessed Trinity”, Rachel Cope
“Experimental Proof Of The Ever Blessed Trinity”, Rachel Cope
BYU Studies
Due to his interest in the experiential elements of religion and his desire to gain a greater understanding of holiness or sanctification, John Wesley wrote letters to some of his followers in the late eighteenth century, asking if they had “experimental proof of the ever blessed Trinity.”1 Fascinated by accounts he had read of de Renty’s encounter with the distinct persons of the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit— Wesley wanted to know if others had experienced divine redemption in a similarly relational manner.2 Several individuals responded to his missive in the affirmative; they reported that they had received …

Emmeline Wells And The Suffrage Movement, Cherry B. Silver, Sheree M. Bench
BYU Studies
In 1909, Susa Young Gates listed Emmeline B. Wells, along with Elmina S. Taylor and Eliza R. Snow, as one of the three greatest women The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had produced.1 Biographer Carol Cornwall Madsen attests to the spread and durability of Emmeline’s influence, reminding us that “she was the most widely known Mormon woman of her time, in and outside” the Church and Utah.2 She was bright, observant, and articulate, with a keen memory. She was an outspoken representative of her people, meeting with presidents and national suffrage leaders, and she left a voluminous record …
Hereditary Cancer Syndrome Recognition And Testing For The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner: Beyond Brca, Hanford Shuman, Deborah Himes
Hereditary Cancer Syndrome Recognition And Testing For The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner: Beyond Brca, Hanford Shuman, Deborah Himes
Student Works
Hereditary cancer syndromes, resulting from mutations of tumor-suppressor genes, can significantly increase risk for breast cancer. While Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome caused by BRCA1/2 mutations is well known, less well-known hereditary cancer syndromes also exist. This clinical practice feature focuses on three other syndromes including, Li-Fraumeni, Cowden, and Peutz-Jeghers. This article will help prepare nurse practitioners to recognize key features of these syndromes and understand testing criteria. Additionally, this article discusses barriers to diagnosing hereditary cancer syndromes and the role of primary care nurse practitioners in ordering genetic tests and making genetic referrals for optimal patient care.
