The Effects Of Alcohol On Bdnf And Cd5 Dependent Pathways, Andrew Jordan Payne Aug 2020

The Effects Of Alcohol On Bdnf And Cd5 Dependent Pathways, Andrew Jordan Payne

Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol represents the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Yet, despite its prevalent role in impeding human health, there is much to understand about how it elicits its effects on the body and how the body and brain change when an individual becomes physiologically dependent upon alcohol. The work presented herein represents an effort to elucidate the acute and chronic effects of alcohol on the nervous system. We investigate two specific protein pathways and their role in alcohol's effects on the body. The first begins with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which acts on TrkB, and ends …

Shylettera Davis

College of Nursing, BYU

Master of Science

Background: Mental illness (MI) affects one in five Americans. Individuals with severe MI are frequently victims of crime, which includes sexual assault (SA). It is well established that individuals with severe MI are more vulnerable for SA victimization. What is not recognized is if this vulnerability for SA extends to other less serious types of MI.

Aim: To identify and synthesize findings from the literature for any connections between having a MI and increased vulnerability for SA victimization, specific mental …

Method: The participants included 127 school-age children from a mountain west school district who were administered a DA of inferential word learning that entailed a pretest, a teaching phase, an examiner rating of the child's ability to infer word meaning (modifiability), and posttests. Results: Hierarchical logistic regression and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analyses revealed that combining all posttests, the modifiability total, and the final examiner judgement scores from …

Alcohol Affects The Reward Pathway Of The Brain Via A6-Containing Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In The Nucleus Accumbens, Elizabeth Qiufeng Anderson Aug 2020

Alcohol Affects The Reward Pathway Of The Brain Via A6-Containing Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In The Nucleus Accumbens, Elizabeth Qiufeng Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The prevailing view is that enhancement of dopamine (DA) transmission in the mesolimbic system consisting of DA neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) that project to the nucleus accumbens (NAc) underlies the rewarding properties of ethanol (EtOH) and nicotine (NIC). Although the dogma is that EtOH enhancement of DA neural activity contributes to enhancement of DA transmission, DA neurons are not sensitive to rewarding levels of EtOH. However, VTA GABA neurons are sensitive to low-dose EtOH. We have shown previously that EtOH modulation of DA release in the NAc is mediated by α6-containing nicotinic receptors (α6*-nAChRs), that α6*-nAChRs mediate …

Exploring Korean Hand Therapy In Treating Plantar Fasciitis: A Pilot Study, Alice A-Hui Osborn Fetzer

Theses and Dissertations

PF is one of the most common foot and ankle problems. People with PF experience mild to severe pain that interferes moderately with activities of daily living (ADL). Due to chronic pain that interferes with ADL, people with PF often use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and/or acetaminophen. These medications alleviate pain but cannot eliminate it. Additionally, with chronic use, these medications can cause well-known adverse side effects. The purposes of this study were to investigate the effect of Korean Hand Therapy (KHT) in (1) treating the pain experienced in patients with plantar fasciitis (PF), (2) evaluating its impact on functionality, and …

Factors Influencing Teacher Survival In The Beginning Teacher Longitudinal Study, Lisa Mclachlan Aug 2020

Factors Influencing Teacher Survival In The Beginning Teacher Longitudinal Study, Lisa Mclachlan

Theses and Dissertations

Widespread critical shortages of high-quality teachers in the United States (Sutcher, Darling-Hammond, Carver-Thomas, 2016) has prompted considerable research on staffing trends within the teaching profession. Research suggests both an increase in the demand for teachers and a "chronic and relatively high annual turnover compared with many other occupations" (Ingersoll & Smith, 2003, p. 31). Recent studies have highlighted the negative effects that high teacher turnover has on financial costs, school climate, and student performance. Since attrition rates appear to be higher for beginning teachers (Ingersoll & Smith, 2003; Ingersoll, 2012), it is important to understand why beginning teacher attrition occurs …

Dairy Milk And Plant-Based Alternative Beverage Purchasing Factors: Consumer Insights, Jeffrey Alan Rime Aug 2020

Dairy Milk And Plant-Based Alternative Beverage Purchasing Factors: Consumer Insights, Jeffrey Alan Rime

Theses and Dissertations

From 2000 to 2019, total volume of fluid milk consumption in the USA has steadily fallen. Many factors have played a role in this trend, including competition with plant-based alternative beverages (PBABs). Comparably, sales of PBABs such as almond “milk” have increased over the same duration. Consumer research has identified key beverage characteristics as purchase drivers for both beverage types. This study sought to evaluate the relative importance of these characteristics, investigate the effect of label statements on ratings of their acceptability, and analyze the settings in which and occasions during which consumption of dairy milk and PBABs occurs. This …

Holistic Approaches To State School Grading Systems, Darryl Bond Denhalter Aug 2020

Holistic Approaches To State School Grading Systems, Darryl Bond Denhalter

Theses and Dissertations

The United States education system has experienced an evolution of school accountability systems that has led to changes and variation in state school grading systems. This study shows that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015, a recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965, provides greater autonomy to individual states in evaluating and reporting school accountability than in preceding years and provides opportunities for states to implement a more holistic or well-rounded approach to school grading. ESSA policy and this study encourages states to choose to evaluate schools more holistically by implementing a wider …

Special Education Teacher Burnout: A Factor Analysis, Heidi Celeste Bussey Aug 2020

Special Education Teacher Burnout: A Factor Analysis, Heidi Celeste Bussey

Theses and Dissertations

The poor retention of special education teachers negatively impacts student academic outcomes. Special education teachers commonly cite burnout as a primary reason for leaving the field; however, there is a deficit of literature available to validate claims concerning special educators and their level of burnout. This study analyzed the psychometric properties of the Maslach Burnout Inventory: Educators' Survey using a sample of 349 special education teachers from schools across the nation (201 resource room special education teachers and 148 self-contained special education teachers). The Maslach Burnout Inventory: Educators' Survey measures three factors (e.g. subscales) emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. …

Logics Of Collaboration: An Ethnography Of Codesign In The Brazilian Amazon, Jacob Hartt Wixom Aug 2020

Logics Of Collaboration: An Ethnography Of Codesign In The Brazilian Amazon, Jacob Hartt Wixom

Theses and Dissertations

Engineers working internationally are increasingly concerned with the social impacts of their work. New frontiers in design show promise in helping practitioners address these concerns. One of these is codesign, a practice of making stakeholders co-decision-makers in the design process. Codesign has the potential to greatly improve the social sustainability of engineered products, but some concerns remain surrounding codesign’s practicability in engineering. I explore three such concerns: that conflicting institutional logics may undermine codesign’s collaborative aspirations, that codesign can perpetuate developmental idealism, and that codesign may insufficiently account for the needs and perspectives of marginalized populations. Through more than a …

Governing Dynamics Of Divalent Copper Binding By Influenza A Matrix Protein 2 His37 Imidazole, Kelly Lewis Mcguire Aug 2020

Governing Dynamics Of Divalent Copper Binding By Influenza A Matrix Protein 2 His37 Imidazole, Kelly Lewis Mcguire

Theses and Dissertations

Influenza A is involved in hundreds of thousands of deaths globally every year resulting from viral infection-related complications. Previous efforts to subdue the virus by preventing proper function of wild-type (WT) neuraminidase (N), and M2 proteins using oseltamivir and amantadine (AMT) or rimantadine (RMT), respectively, exhibited success initially. Over time, these drugs began exhibiting mixed success as the virus developed drug resistance. M2 is a proton channel responsible for the acidification of the viral interior which facilitates release of the viral RNA into the host. M2 has a His37-tetrad that is the selective filter for protons. This protein has been …

Breaking The Organic Mold: Introducing Copper Into The Influenza A Arena With Neutral And Divalent Complexes, Jonathan D. Lynch Aug 2020

Breaking The Organic Mold: Introducing Copper Into The Influenza A Arena With Neutral And Divalent Complexes, Jonathan D. Lynch

Theses and Dissertations

Influenza A (IVA) continues to pose a growing global threat even as current medications are becoming less effective. One of the main avenues of research into new anti-IVA drugs is its homotetrameric Matrix 2 proton channel (M2A), without which the virus would be unable to release its viral RNA into the host cell. The drug amantadine used to bind and block M2A until near-ubiquitous resistance formed as an M2A-S31N mutation, starting around 1995 and proceeding to 2005 when amantadine was disallowed for use as an anti-IVA drug. The standard organic structure currently being used for M2A inhibitor research comprises an …

Co-Milling And Cofiring Of Woody Biomass With Coal In Utility Boilers: Enabling Technology Through Experiments And Modelling, Seyedhassan Fakourian Aug 2020

Co-Milling And Cofiring Of Woody Biomass With Coal In Utility Boilers: Enabling Technology Through Experiments And Modelling, Seyedhassan Fakourian

Theses and Dissertations

Beetle-killed trees and woody residues degenerate and may lead to wildfires and uncontrolled CO2 emission. Woody biomass is known as a neutral CO2 solid fuel since it generates the same amount of CO2 that takes from atmosphere during its growing up. Cofiring woody biomass with coal in existing coal power plants is a reasonable solution to reduce the net amount of CO2 emission and decrease the risk of wildfires. However, there are some challenges ranging from providing and handling the woody biomass to the operation of cofiring woody biomass with coal. Co-milling of the fuels and ash deposition on the …

Sexual Assault And Online Help Seeking: An Analysis Of Survivor Disclosure And Questions After Assault, Abby Luthi Sagers Aug 2020

Sexual Assault And Online Help Seeking: An Analysis Of Survivor Disclosure And Questions After Assault, Abby Luthi Sagers

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual assault is a pandemic issue that affects millions worldwide. In the U.S. it is estimated that one in five women and one in 38 men will be victims of rape or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime (Smith et al., 2018). Sexual assault has several significant long-term effects, including negatively impacting survivors’ psychological, emotional, physical, and interpersonal well-being. After a trauma from sexual victimization, survivors face the difficult process of making sense out of what happened, what to do about it, and whether to disclose the experience to others. Reporting, whether formally or informally, can be extremely …

Sedentary behavior (SB) contributes to many negative health-related outcomes. Motivation to reduce SB and increase physical activity (PA) are necessary to reduce co-morbidities. Tracking SB and PA provides objective data to help promote wellness. The purposes of this quasi-experimental study were to 1) determine the accuracy of three commercially available activity trackers compared to research-grade accelerometers, and 2) explore whether using these activity trackers led to a change in activity level one week after gathering baseline data. Activity trackers used in this study were Apple Watch, Fitbit Surge, and Microsoft Band 2. A convenience sample of college-age students and community …

On Creases And Curved Links: Design Approaches For Predicting And Customizing Behaviors In Origami-Based And Developable Mechanisms, Jared J. Butler Aug 2020

On Creases And Curved Links: Design Approaches For Predicting And Customizing Behaviors In Origami-Based And Developable Mechanisms, Jared J. Butler

Theses and Dissertations

This work develops models and tools to help designers address the challenges associated with designing origami-based and developable mechanisms. These models utilize strain energy, kinematics, compliant mechanisms, and graphical techniques to make the design of origami-based and developable mechanisms approachable and intuitive. Origami-based design tools are expanded through two methods. First presented is a generalized approach for identifying single-output mechanical advantage for a multiple-input compliant mechanism, such as many origami-based mechanisms. The model is used to predict the force-deflection behavior of an origami-based mechanism (Oriceps) and is verified with experimental data from magnetic actuation of the mechanism. Second is a …

Does Immigration Help To Explain Child Stress?, Elizabeth Marie Koch Sigler Aug 2020

Does Immigration Help To Explain Child Stress?, Elizabeth Marie Koch Sigler

Theses and Dissertations

The impacts of childhood stressors are harmful to the emotional and physical well-being of children of all ages. Past research has suggested that children experience increased stress due to change. One subgroup of the United States population that experiences change, is immigrants. Research provides empirical evidence of adolescent immigrant stress but has failed to examine stress experienced by immigrant children at a young age. The present study investigates how immigration status and child immigration generation might impact child stress at a young age using OLS regression. I predict that immigrant children will experience more stress than non-immigrant children and that …

Valproic Acid Leads To An Increase In Ros Generation By Inhibiting The Deacetylation Of Mitochondrial Sod, Stephen Marc Lucas Aug 2020

Valproic Acid Leads To An Increase In Ros Generation By Inhibiting The Deacetylation Of Mitochondrial Sod, Stephen Marc Lucas

Theses and Dissertations

Valproic Acid Promotes Acetylation of Superoxide Dismutase-2 During Neurogenesis. Valproic acid (VPA) is a known developmental toxicant associated with a high prevalence of neural tube defects (NTD). The mechanism of VPA-induced NTD is unclear, but oxidative stress may be implicated. To understand how embryotoxic oxidative stress may occur, we measured superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity following VPA treatment in the embryonic pluripotent P19 mouse carcinoma cell line. In undifferentiated P19 cultures treated with VPA (5 mM), dichlorofluorescein fluorescence increased 15% compared to untreated controls over 20 min, indicating a modest, yet statistically significant increase in ROS generation. Undifferentiated P19 cells were …

Discovery Of A Novel Regulatory Mechanism Of Tnk1 By 14-3-3 And Its Ubiquitin Association Domain Provides A Potential Therapeutic Targeting Opportunity In Cancer, Tsz Yin Chan Aug 2020

Discovery Of A Novel Regulatory Mechanism Of Tnk1 By 14-3-3 And Its Ubiquitin Association Domain Provides A Potential Therapeutic Targeting Opportunity In Cancer, Tsz Yin Chan

Theses and Dissertations

While a relatively limited number of known oncogenes underlie a large percentage of cancers, a variety of new genes have emerged as low-frequency cancer drivers. Each of these new oncogenes represents a frontier for targeted therapy. However, the discovery of low-frequency targetable oncogenic drivers is challenging. This study focuses on the poorly understood Tyrosine kinase non-receptor-1 (TNK1), which has been reported to have both oncogenic and tumor suppressive functions. TNK1 has been identified to promote cancer cells survival and promote chemoresistance in multiple independent studies. On the other hand, whole-body constitutive deletion of TNK1 in mice caused an increase in …

Understanding Relapse In Self-Perceived Problematic Pornography Users, Erin L. Rackham Aug 2020

Understanding Relapse In Self-Perceived Problematic Pornography Users, Erin L. Rackham

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored reasons for relapse among a sample of 938 self-identified problematic pornography users. A combination of numeric content analysis and qualitative coding of responses to an open-ended question about pornography relapse revealed six main categories of reasons for relapse. The mental, emotional, and relational categories were then analyzed in detail, and this analysis revealed significant overlap of responses from the emotional and relational categories. Hence, a new category of relational-emotional reasons for relapse was created and analyzed. The findings from this study highlight the complex interactions of different types of factors driving relapse in self-perceived problematic pornography users …

Utility Of High-Definition Fiber Tractography And Eye-Tracking For Measuring Outcome In Chronic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah M. Lindsey Aug 2020

Utility Of High-Definition Fiber Tractography And Eye-Tracking For Measuring Outcome In Chronic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Hannah M. Lindsey

Theses and Dissertations

A complete understanding of the functional and structural impairments driving persistent post-concussive symptom (PCS) expression in approximately one-third of those who suffer from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is essential for the development of effective treatment strategies and improving quality of life. While traditional outcome measures, such as neuropsychological testing and structural magnetic resonance imaging, are sensitive to the severe functional impairments and widespread tissue damage frequently seen after moderate-to-severe injuries, more advanced measures that are sensitive to the subtle changes in cognitive function and tissue microstructure that may underlie persistent PCS are necessary for the assessment of recovery from …

Aerobic Exercise Alters Opioid Receptors Following Chronic Alcohol Exposure, James N. Brundage Aug 2020

Aerobic Exercise Alters Opioid Receptors Following Chronic Alcohol Exposure, James N. Brundage

Theses and Dissertations

Opioid receptors have been a target of pharmacological manipulation in alcohol use disorder (AUD) recovery protocols for many years. Aerobic exercise, a common adjunct in AUD recovery, is known to modulate opioid receptors (ORs) both during both acute and long term exposure. The three subtypes of ORs: mu (MOR), delta (DOR), and kappa (KOR) are all expressed on neurons in the mesocorticolimbic circuitry. Kappa-opioid receptors are expressed directly on dopamine (DA) neuron terminals in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Mu and Delta ORs are expressed on cholinergic interneurons (CINs) and GABA neurons in the NAc. In alcohol dependent rodents, KORs are …
