Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) enable detailed historical preservation of large-scale infrastructure and contribute to cultural heritage preservation, improved maintenance, public relations, and development planning. Aerial and terrestrial photo data coupled with high accuracy GPS create hyper-realistic mesh and texture models, high resolution point clouds, orthophotos, and digital elevation models (DEMs) that preserve a snapshot of history. A case study is presented of the development of a hyper-realistic 3D model that spans the complex 1.7 km2 area of the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah, USA and includes over 75 significant structures. The model leverages photos obtained during the historic …

Prevalence And Intensity Of Infection Of The Parasitic Copepod Salmincola Californiensis On Rainbow Trout In Birch Creek, Idaho, Andrew D. Suchomel, Eric J. Billman
Western North American Naturalist
Salmincola californiensis is a parasitic copepod that infects salmonid fishes in the genus Oncorhynchus. Our objective was to determine the level of infection of S. californiensis in Rainbow Trout in Birch Creek, Idaho. We sampled Rainbow Trout at 5 sites on Birch Creek during October 2015 and May 2016. Mean intensity of infection was greater in May 2016 (x̄ = 1.7) than it was in October 2015 (x̄ = 2.9; F1, 69 = 5.535, P = 0.021). Intensity of infection ranged from 1 to 10 copepods in October 2015 and 1 to 12 copepods in May …
Best Friends Forever And Family Ties: Continuity And Change In Closeness With Parents And Friends Among Australian Adolescents, Mckell A. Jorgensen-Wells
Best Friends Forever And Family Ties: Continuity And Change In Closeness With Parents And Friends Among Australian Adolescents, Mckell A. Jorgensen-Wells
Theses and Dissertations
During adolescence, the need for social connection increases. Yet, fostering emotional closeness in relationships becomes more complex, as the need for autonomy also increases and social environments must adapt to become conducive to these seemingly competing needs. This complexity necessitates more research on what happens to close relationships during adolescence, so parents, scholars, and practitioners are better equipped to help individuals navigate the unique social atmosphere of adolescence. The current study draws upon multi-level modeling techniques to estimate growth models of Australian adolescents' closeness to parents and closeness to friends from ages 12-17 and examine predictors of these trajectories. Findings …

Stora Tuna Church Memorial Concert, Harald Henrysson
Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
On the evening of September 9th, Stephen Hastings and I and two friends went to Stora Tuna Church for a well-attended memorial concert. The Conservatory Chorus from Falun and Borganaskoren from Borlange had joined forces. The soloist was soprano Carolina Bengtsdotter-Ljung, a singer from Dalarna who once received the Jussi Bjorling Award and who has been active for several years in Germany. As a surprise -not included on the printed program- Raymond Bjorling appeared with "Tonerna" (on the 10th, he also gave a memorial concert at another Dalarna church). The concert was a fine and worthy tribute to Jussi's memory. …

The UK JB Appreciation Society com memorated the 50th anniversary of Bjorling's last Covent Garden performances of La boheme in March of 1960 with an afternoon event at Swedenborg Hall on Saturday, September 11th. Sadly John Steane, who was scheduled to speak, was ill and could not appear. In his place I presented the "Producer's Showcase" La boheme scene with Tebaldi as well as one of the "Voice of Fires tone" videos. I was able to use the audio system of the venerable Recorded Vocal Art Society, and members of that society were also present (I am treasurer of RVAS …

Pacific salmon are ecologically, economically, and culturally important species indigenous to British Columbia, Canada. Unfortunately, some populations of Pacific salmon have been declining due to climate change, habitat loss, overfishing, and anthropogenic development. As such, considerable resources have been invested to study, restore, protect, and monitor Pacific salmon and their habitat. Since 2004, Lyall Creek, a salmon-bearing stream in the Salish Sea in British Columbia, Canada, has been monitored. Using 2-pass electrofishing, we investigated changes in observed densities over 15 years (2004–2019) for juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and juvenile coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii) …

Trichloroethylene Remediation By Engineered Soil Bacteria, Madeline Hannah Mclaughlin Armond
Trichloroethylene Remediation By Engineered Soil Bacteria, Madeline Hannah Mclaughlin Armond
Theses and Dissertations
Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a toxic pollutant that has become a widespread problem by seeping into groundwater across the developed world. Clean-up of sites contaminated with TCE is extremely difficult due to the absence of an efficient and cost-effective method for clean-up. Bioremediation efforts include a variety of potential microbial candidates with various metabolic capabilities as clean up options of contaminated sites. Cupriavidus necator, a soil bacterium was found to possess the ability to degrade TCE via a phenol-dependent pathway. Previous research by Ayoubi and Harker (1998) created a strain (MM02) capable of constitutive TCE degradation but the underlying genetic alteration …

The Bjorling family lived for hundreds of years in the small village of Voxna. Jussi's grandfather was a blacksmith here. And David and his three young sons came here to sing in the small wooden church twice. These are the reasons why each summer l organize a concert in this church. Some 15 people from JBS USA visited us during last year's concert. This is a recording from that concert and here are a few comments, mainly for you who were not there. The singers were Bengt Krantz (baritone) , President of JBS Scandinavia and Mats Carlsson (tenor). Mats has …

Sexual Dimorphism In Titi Monkeys’ Digit (2d:4d) Ratio Is Associated With Maternal Urinary Sex Hormones During Pregnancy, Alexander Baxter, Elizabeth K. Wood, Lynea R. Witczak, Karen L. Bales, James Dee Higley
Faculty Publications
The second-to-fourth digit (2D:4D) ratio is a sexually-dimorphic biomarker for prenatal sex hormone exposure. We investigated whether titi monkeys (Plecturocebus cupreus) exhibit sexually-dimorphic 2D:4D ratio, and whether variation in 2D:4D ratio correlates with maternal testosterone and estrogen levels during early pregnancy. Subjects were 61 adult titi monkeys (32 males, 29 females). For 26 subjects, maternal urine samples were collected approximately 15–20 weeks before birth and assayed for testosterone and estrone conjugate (E1C). Titi monkeys exhibited a human-like pattern of sexual dimorphism in right-hand 2D:4D ratio, with females exhibiting higher 2D:4D ratio than males (β = −0.29, p = .023). For …

Each year in the United States, 7000 to 30,000 children experience their parent’s suicide. Due to the stigma associated with suicide, feelings of guilt, and intense grief, surviving family members avoid talking about suicide. Over time, children struggle with confusion and intense emotions associated with their parent’s suicide. In this study, seven adults, who reported being younger than six years old at the time of their father’s suicide, participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Participants’ responses highlight the challenges that young children face due to limited memories of their deceased parent. Interviews concluded with an opportunity for participants to review and …
Determining The Anthropogenic Effects On Eutrophication Of Utah Lake Since European Settlement Using Multiple Geochemical Approaches, Richard Ronald Rawle Williams
Determining The Anthropogenic Effects On Eutrophication Of Utah Lake Since European Settlement Using Multiple Geochemical Approaches, Richard Ronald Rawle Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Recent urbanization of Utah Valley, Utah, has highlighted the impacts of anthropogenically-driven eutrophication of Utah Lake, which may lead to more frequent harmful algal blooms. To examine changes in trophic state, three freeze cores were taken from Utah Lake (Goshen Bay, Provo Bay, and near the Provo Boat Harbor) to examine the extent of eutrophication since European settlement. 210Pb and 137Cs chronologies were constructed for all three cores, although due to low supported 210Pb in the Provo Boat Harbor core, an additional pollen analysis was performed. Lower juniper pollen counts in addition to higher POACEAE (grasses and cereals) counts above …

Morphological Evidence Of Maladaptation To Introduced Predators In Gambusia Senilis From Its Extant Range In The Conchos Basin (Chihuahua, Mexico), Eric K. Moody, Kathleen L. Sterup, María De Lourdes Lozano-Vilano
Western North American Naturalist
Desert fishes are among the most imperiled yet poorly studied groups of fishes on Earth. Human modifications of the environment and introductions of invasive species frequently drive population declines and extinctions of fishes in arid regions of North America. One recent example is the extirpation of Gambusia senilis from the Devils River in Texas following the construction of Amistad Reservoir on the Rio Grande. The direct cause of this extirpation is unclear, but it has been hypothesized that the introduction of predatory bass (Micropterus spp.) to the river played at least some role. We tested this hypothesis using a …

Command-line software plays a critical role in biology research. However, processes for installing and executing software differ widely. The Common Workflow Language (CWL) is a community standard that addresses this problem. Using CWL, tool developers can formally describe a tool’s inputs, outputs, and other execution details. CWL documents can include instructions for executing tools inside software containers. Accordingly, CWL tools are portable—they can be executed on diverse computers—including personal workstations, high-performance clusters, or the cloud. CWL also supports workflows, which describe dependencies among tools and using outputs from one tool as inputs to others. To date, CWL has been used …

Monitoring The Basking Behavior Of Rio Grande Cooter (Pseudemys Gorzugi) Through Game Cameras In Southeastern New Mexico, Usa, Thanchira Suriyamongkol, Weizhong Tian, Ivana Mali
Western North American Naturalist
Basking is an essential behavior for thermoregulation in turtles. Although basking is widely studied, this behavior varies among populations, habitats, and microclimates. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of game cameras for studying basking activity of Rio Grande Cooter (Pseudemys gorzugi), a New Mexico state-threatened species. From August 2018 to July 2019, images were taken hourly from 07:00 to 19:00 at 3 locations along or near the Black River, New Mexico. We used a generalized linear mixed-effect model to find associations between basking patterns and environmental variables. The species was active year-round, with the greatest number of …
