Examining The Perceptions Of Fake News, Verification, And Notices On Twitter, Brendan Patrick Gwynn
Examining The Perceptions Of Fake News, Verification, And Notices On Twitter, Brendan Patrick Gwynn
Theses and Dissertations
The rise of social media platforms has had a significant impact on the conventional model of gatekeeping. With increased access to information--as well as the ability to contribute to the public discourse--individuals no longer need to rely on the mass media for news. These realities have led to increased conversations surrounding credibility in the digital age. Although not a new concept, fake news has become increasingly common in recent years. The web--particularly social media outlets, like Twitter--have enhanced the spread of misinformation. To combat this, social media platforms have introduced gatekeeping features like verification marks and warning labels. However, questions …
A Descriptive Analysis Of Severe Maternal Morbidities In Southern Arizona, Joseph Sherman
A Descriptive Analysis Of Severe Maternal Morbidities In Southern Arizona, Joseph Sherman
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction
Maternal morbidities and maternal deaths are rising at an alarming rate throughout the United States, despite advances in medicine and technology (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). In 2020, maternal deaths climbed to its highest peak in thirty years, at 23.8 deaths per 100,000 births (CDC 2020; CDC 2022b). Maternal morbidities have also increased by nearly 200% from 1993 to 2014 (CDC, 2021). The startling rise in both maternal morbidities and maternal deaths is likely exacerbated by limited access to healthcare and the pervasiveness of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease (Carroll, 2017; Geller …
Virtual Advertising In The Nba: How Arousal Level And Visual Attention Alter Brand Recall And Recognition, Caleb H. Porter
Virtual Advertising In The Nba: How Arousal Level And Visual Attention Alter Brand Recall And Recognition, Caleb H. Porter
Theses and Dissertations
During the 2020 season, the NBA implemented, for the first time, the use of virtual advertisements. Virtual advertisements are digitally superimposed ads directly on the court that are visible to anyone viewing the broadcasted version of a game. This study used eye-tracking and galvanic skin response (GSR) in conjunction with the limited capacity model of motivated mediated message processing (LC4MP; Lang, 2006a) to a) determine virtual advertising's effectiveness compared to traditional in-stadium advertising and to b) monitor the effect emotional arousal has on advertising recall and recognition. A sample of 176 fans of the Utah Jazz viewed one of four …

An Eye To The Sky: Describing Characteristics Of Weather App Users Through Q Method, Danielle Wardinsky Hallows
Theses and Dissertations
The world revolves around weather information - whether the need is to understand, prepare for, or navigate weather. Although traditional television viewership of weather forecasts are on the decline, mobile weather applications are becoming the new media medium for weather information. In fact, the total number of app downloads in the weather market reached 69.5 million at the end of 2021 (Statista, 2021). As a result, understanding the characteristics of weather app users and what those users are looking for is pertinent to research regarding weather communication. While weather is an ongoing phenomenon sought to be understood by people for …

Identification Of Sources Of Air Pollution Using Novel Analytical Techniques And Instruments, Nitish Bhardwaj
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a collection of studies that investigates the issue of air pollution in the field of environmental chemistry. My thesis consists of research works done to measure the concentration of particulate matter (PM) and gas-phase species in ambient air. High concentrations of PM is a significant problem in Utah and in other regions of the world. Particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 micrometers and smaller play a crucial role in air pollution and pose serious health risks when inhaled. PM is composed of both organic and inorganic components. The organic fraction in PM ranges from 10-90% of …
Nutritional Messaging: To Eat Or Not To Eat?, Christina Triptow
Nutritional Messaging: To Eat Or Not To Eat?, Christina Triptow
Theses and Dissertations
There is a great deal of diet-specific processed foods on the market today. With so many options it can become difficult for consumers to decide what products to purchase. This situation is further intensified by the plethora of contradictory messages found in food advertising, especially in weight loss and dieting food advertising, but also seen in government nutrition campaigns and all over the internet on platforms like social media, blogs, and so forth. These messages can be confusing and frustrating for consumers as they try to decipher which foods they should eat to reach their health or weight loss goals. …

Comparing Survival And Cause-Specific Mortality Of Different Translocation Release Methods For Desert Bighorn Sheep, Taylor S. Daily, Carlos E. Gonzalez, Louis A. Harveson, Warren C. Conway, Froylan Hernandez
Western North American Naturalist
Historically, desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) were prevalent throughout the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. However, they were extirpated by the 1960s due to unregulated hunting, habitat loss, predation, and disease transmission from livestock. Restoration efforts have been successfully conducted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to increase population numbers of resident (i.e., animals that currently populate a region of interest) desert bighorn sheep at Black Gap Wildlife Management Area (BGWMA) through the use of translocations. Because there is a lack of knowledge on alternative release methods for large mammal translocations, our goals were to monitor cause-specific …
You Are Enough, Emma Patton
You Are Enough, Emma Patton
Children's Book and Media Review
In modern society, so much value is placed on appearance. Especially during the transitional times of adolescence, with normal body changes occurring and the pressure to perform, fitness and diet culture create a slippery slope to obsessive habits. In You Are Enough, the author speaks to any individual who is struggling with their relationship with food and exercise. Jen Petro-Roy uses her past experience suffering and then recovering from an eating disorder to normalize this issue and also encourage her readers to get help, regardless of the severity or exact nature of their struggles. From this book, readers can learn …

Osteoarthritis And Cartilage Insult: Elucidation Of Molecular Interplay And Attempted Interventions, Brandon James Rose
Osteoarthritis And Cartilage Insult: Elucidation Of Molecular Interplay And Attempted Interventions, Brandon James Rose
Theses and Dissertations
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and incapacitating joint disease beginning with breakdown of articular cartilage and extending into subchondral bone. At present, the processes through which the disease occurs are poorly understood, and interventions are limited to pain relief and eventual joint replacement. OA is commonly associated with obesity and corresponding pathologies, and as OA is demonstrably not a product of passive erosion of cartilage over time or under increased loads there must needs be some other mechanistic link between the two conditions. We hypothesize that the production of ceramides, a hallmark of the insulin resistance syndrome underlying many obesity-related …
The Inhibition Of Valproic Acid-Induced Negative Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Through Nrf2-Mediated Redox Regulation, Ted Brenton Piorczynski
The Inhibition Of Valproic Acid-Induced Negative Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Through Nrf2-Mediated Redox Regulation, Ted Brenton Piorczynski
Theses and Dissertations
Valproic acid (VPA) is a commonly prescribed antiepileptic drug that causes negative neurodevelopmental outcomes, including neural tube defects (NTDs) and neurodevelopmental disorders, in fetuses exposed to it. While the exact mechanism by which VPA causes defects is unknown, research has shown that VPA increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lead to redox dysregulation. We hypothesize that VPA causes negative neurodevelopmental outcomes through the disruption of redox-sensitive signaling pathways that are critical for proper embryonic development, and that protection from the VPA-induced redox disruption may decrease the prevalence of the observed defects. Time-bred mice were treated with 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione …

Western North American Naturalist
Bats are difficult to study due to their nocturnal, cryptic, and highly vagile nature. Ongoing advances in acoustic recording hardware and call classification software have made species detection and activity monitoring more feasible. Our objectives were to determine the effort necessary to monitor bat assemblages using an occupancy framework and acoustic data and to provide guidelines for researchers interested in developing similar monitoring programs. We collected data at 2 study areas in South Texas from June through September in 2015, 2016, and 2017. We used Pettersson D500X Mk II real-time full-spectrum detectors and classified sound files using SonoBat bat call …

Forest Talk: How Trees Communicate, Emilee Bell
Forest Talk: How Trees Communicate, Emilee Bell
Children's Book and Media Review
Forest Talk unravels the complexities of the symbiotic relationships within a forest that go on under our very own feet. Koch takes the time to build the backstory from indigenous knowledge all the way up to the cutting edge research of today. From fungi to humans, trees connect with and through a wide array of organisms, with life-changing implications at every junction. For example, certain deciduous trees have built-in trade agreements with coniferous trees to exchange resources during difficult seasons or when a disease plagues one of the species but not the other. The health of a forest literally depends …

Exploring The Inferiority Model In Adlerian Psychotherapy, Rachel Bradley
Exploring The Inferiority Model In Adlerian Psychotherapy, Rachel Bradley
Student Works
Alfred Adler once afflicted with inferiority due to organ inferiority, became the founding father of Individual/Adlerian psychology. Adlerian psychotherapy spans numerous contemporary theories in psychology. Adlerian psychotherapy is a holistic, phenomenological, optimistic and socially entrenched theory, on how everyone interprets themselves and others within the society they live (Maniacci & Sackett-Maniacci, 2019). An overview will be provided of where one of Adler’s most important assumptions, inferiority, fits within the Adlerian theory. Given such, the negative responses to inferiority: inferiority complex and superiority complex will be discussed, followed by socially useful type of inferiority. After that, inferiority as a specific element …
The Effect Of Economic Shocks On Religious Freedom Violations: Evidence From Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, And Sudan, Rachel Miner
The Effect Of Economic Shocks On Religious Freedom Violations: Evidence From Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, And Sudan, Rachel Miner
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, global religious freedom violations are on the rise, especially against religious minorities, as government leaders have used the pandemic as a mechanism to increase oppression (USCIRF 2021). The first week of February 2022, the international community recognized the one-year mark since the Myanmar government launched a coup and genocide campaign against Rohingya Muslims (Paddock 2022). As the Winter Olympics unfolds on the world stage, there is increased attention surrounding the nearly two million Uighur Muslims currently held in concentration camps in China (Abbas 2022). And even with growing headline reports, uncertainty surrounding how …
The Investment Gap: An Exploration Of Why So Few Women Study Finance At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Anne Pearson
The Investment Gap: An Exploration Of Why So Few Women Study Finance At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Anne Pearson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis explores the root cause of the systemic underrepresentation of women in the finance industry by investigating why so few women choose to study finance in college. It looks in depth at why there is a low percentage of women that graduate in finance from Brigham Young University each year by analyzing the survey responses of women in business majors across the Marriott School. The thesis discusses three areas of solutions for greater mentorship, transparency, and exposure that can be implemented through five actionable steps to help shift the dynamic of representation. While I do not aim to make …
The Protective Potential Of Family Relationship Strength As It Relates To Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors In Ace-Exposed Adolescents And Emerging Adults, Collin Wright
Student Works
Introduction: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are known to cause higher incidences of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors (STBs) in young people. Family Relationship Strength (FRS) is a known protective factor against STBs. However, there is little research on the protective nature of FRS once ACEs have been experienced by a young person. The aim of our analysis is to examine whether the strong protective nature of FRS holds true even in ACE-exposed youth. Methods: A sample of 139 patients at the Brigham Young University Comprehensive Clinic (aged 12-25) was obtained from the BYU Marriage and Family Therapy Practice Research Network. Linear …

The Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide: Military Populations, Mason Stewart
Undergraduate Honors Theses
With military populations being at a higher risk for suicide than the general public and military culture reinforcing the three variables of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide; this research set out to answer the hypothesis that military populations would score highly on assessments measuring interpersonal needs and acquired capability. In 2018 for example, active-duty military suicides resulted in the death of 28.4 soldiers for every 100,000, and for reserve they were higher at 30.6 per 100,000 (Department of Defense, 2021). This statistic can be compared to the average suicide rate of the general population within the United States in 2018, …
Pixels & The Polls: The Impact Of Female Role Models In Television Media On The Perceived Electability Of Women, Amy Griffin
Pixels & The Polls: The Impact Of Female Role Models In Television Media On The Perceived Electability Of Women, Amy Griffin
Undergraduate Honors Theses
It’s no secret that women are extraordinarily underrepresented in government and misrepresented in media. To better understand the impact of fictional television media featuring a positive female leader on the public’s perception of the electability of women and on their willingness to support women's campaigns, this study aimed to measure participants’ voting choices after viewing a positive fictional female leader. 104 college-age participants viewed fifteen-minute segments taken from episodes of CBS’s political drama Madam Secretary featuring either a male president or a female Secretary of State as each navigated political challenges. The participants completed vignette election experiences between nonpartisan municipal …
Ethnic-Racial Socialization Experiences Of Mexican American Youth, Katherine Donahey
Ethnic-Racial Socialization Experiences Of Mexican American Youth, Katherine Donahey
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) is associated with positive academic and mental health outcomes for adolescents. These socialization messages come in 3 forms: cultural socialization, preparation for bias, and promotion of mistrust. The ERS literature has mainly focused on African American populations but is expanding to include other demographics, such as Latinx individuals. Since much of ERS research has been conducted from the perspective of parents, the current study sought to add to the literature by evaluating adolescent experiences with ERS in their own words. The study was conducted using focus groups with late adolescents and young adults …
Religiousness And Risky Behaviors Mediated By Moral Attitudes, Benjamin Curth
Religiousness And Risky Behaviors Mediated By Moral Attitudes, Benjamin Curth
Undergraduate Honors Theses
There is a lot of existing research on religiousness in adolescents and risky behaviors such as sex alcohol. However, one understudied aspect of it is why the connection. Very few studies have explored this area, and a mediation model may aid in that research. For this study, a sample size of 364 adolescents ages 14-18 were surveyed (M = 15.64). Some mediations models have been attempted which suggests that it should be successful. In this study, a mediation model is used to explore the relationship between religiousness and risky behaviors in adolescents mediated by conservative attitudes. After finding significant …
The Effect Of Soot Models In Oxy-Coal Combustion Simulations, Kamron Groves Brinkerhoff
The Effect Of Soot Models In Oxy-Coal Combustion Simulations, Kamron Groves Brinkerhoff
Theses and Dissertations
Soot in coal combustion simulations is often ignored due to its computational complexity, despite significant effects on flame temperature and radiation. In this research, a 40 kW oxy-coal combustion system is modeled using Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and a semi-empirical monodisperse coal soot model. Simulation results are compared to experimental measurements of temperature, species concentrations, and soot concentration. Cases where soot is modeled are compared with cases where soot is neglected to determine the accuracy benefits of modeling soot. The simulations were able to replicate experimental results within an acceptable level of error. Including soot in the simulations did not …

“Leadership is all about changing the order of things. Machiavelli said, ‘There is nothing so difficult or so dangerous as to undertake to change the order of things.’ And that is true. It is difficult, and it is sometimes dangerous, because people resist and people are afraid. And that is why only leaders can drive change.”
