Inadequate Maternal Health Care For Women In The United States, Rebecca Stull Zundel
Inadequate Maternal Health Care For Women In The United States, Rebecca Stull Zundel
Ballard Brief
Although insufficient maternal health care has seen improvements in most developed countries, it is still a rising issue in the United States. This insufficiency may partly be due to the accessibility barriers that both rural and urban women face in reaching adequate care. Additionally, the expenses of maternal care or gender discrimination within medical establishments may dissuade women from seeking the care that they need. Women who receive inadequate care are at a higher risk for maternal mortality, the death of their unborn or newly born infant, and having a low-birth weight child, which comes with many issues of its …

Age-Related Differences In Food-Specific Inhibitory Control: Electrophysiological And Behavioral Evidence In Healthy Aging, Whitney D. Allen
Age-Related Differences In Food-Specific Inhibitory Control: Electrophysiological And Behavioral Evidence In Healthy Aging, Whitney D. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
The number of older adults is estimated to double from 52 million to 95 million by 2060. Approximately 80-85% of older adults are diagnosed with a chronic health condition. Many of these chronic health conditions are influenced by diet and exercise, suggesting improved diet and eating behaviors could improve health-related outcomes. One factor that might improve dietary habits in older adults is food-related inhibitory control. We tested whether food-related inhibitory control, using behavioral (response time, error rate) and scalp-recorded event-related potential (ERP; N2 and P3 components) measures of food-related inhibitory control differed between younger and older adults over age 55. …

Acoustofluidics For Simultaneous Nanoparticle-Based Drug Loading And Exosome Encapsulation, Zeyu Wang, Joseph Rich, Nanjing Hao, Yuyang Gu, Chuyi Chen, Shujie Yang, Peiran Zhang, Tony Jun Huang
Faculty Publications
Nanocarrier and exosome encapsulation has been found to significantly increase the efficacy of targeted drug delivery while also minimizing unwanted side effects. However, the development of exosome-encapsulated drug nanocarriers is limited by low drug loading efficiencies and/or complex, time-consuming drug loading processes. Herein, we have developed an acoustofluidic device that simultaneously performs both drug loading and exosome encapsulation. By synergistically leveraging the acoustic radiation force, acoustic microstreaming, and shear stresses in a rotating droplet, the concentration, and fusion of exosomes, drugs, and porous silica nanoparticles is achieved. The final product consists of drug-loaded silica nanocarriers that are encased within an …

Snakebite!: Antivenom And A Global Health Crisis, Jennifer Haltli
Snakebite!: Antivenom And A Global Health Crisis, Jennifer Haltli
Children's Book and Media Review
One million people suffer from snake bites annually. Over 100,000 of them die, mostly in the eastern hemisphere. With 680 species of venomous snakes residing on all habitable continents, the antivenom crisis is global. The major economic barrier to antivenom is that the countries with the most desperate need are the very same countries that cannot afford it. Consequently, bite victims have learned not to rely on expensive antivenoms that would be effectively administered in hospitals, defaulting instead to ineffective folk remedies. Production of antivenom is expensive, but that's not the only problem. The world’s countries have different medical approval …

Food Security: A Study Of The History Of Nutritional Insecurity And Implications Of Development In The Rural Sierra And Selva Regions Of Peru, Jane Morrissey
Food Security: A Study Of The History Of Nutritional Insecurity And Implications Of Development In The Rural Sierra And Selva Regions Of Peru, Jane Morrissey
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study looks at the history of food insecurity in Peru, ranging from 1969 to 2021. The main contribution this paper seeks to make is to create a holistic approach at viewing the historical causes and consequences of food insecurity in Peru, particularly in the rural mountainous regions of the country. These areas range from the southeastern, eastern, and northeastern towns near Lima, with case studies from towns such as Ayacucho, San Martin, Huaycan, Socos, Banda de Shilcayo, and Sapote. Different levels of effective food security can be observed from the oppressive political overthrow of agriculture production in the 1960s …
Evaluating Ramp Meter Wait Time In Utah, Tanner Jeffrey Daines
Evaluating Ramp Meter Wait Time In Utah, Tanner Jeffrey Daines
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to develop an algorithm that could predict ramp meter wait time at metered freeway on-ramps throughout the state of Utah using existing loop detector systems on the ramps. The loop detectors provided data in 60-second increments that include volume, occupancy, and the metering rate. Using these data sources, several ramp meter queue length algorithms were applied; these predicted queue lengths were then converted into wait times by using the metering rate provided by the detector data. A conservation model and several variations of a Kalman filter model generated predicted queue lengths and wait times …
Outdoor Air Pollution And Psychological Well-Being: A Meta-Analysis, Jeremy Stanley Bekker
Outdoor Air Pollution And Psychological Well-Being: A Meta-Analysis, Jeremy Stanley Bekker
Theses and Dissertations
Human life takes place as part of a global ecosystem, meaning that human mental health is at least partially tied to the health of the planet. Health experts who seek to promote psychological well-being should consider how changes to the broad ecological system may impact their efforts. Given the potential impact of the environment on human well-being, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the impact of air pollution on subjective well-being. The goal of this project was to outline the current state of the research on these constructs and provide a clear framework for what research is still needed. Nonsignificant …
Mindfulness And Observational Drawing, Corinne Christopherson Sonderegger
Mindfulness And Observational Drawing, Corinne Christopherson Sonderegger
Theses and Dissertations
Observational drawing has many benefits, yet it can be a difficult and frustrating curriculum for students and teachers alike. As I was teaching elementary and college art classes simultaneously, I noticed a significant discrepancy between my younger and older students. Students in my elementary art classes loved to draw and often expressed how excited they were to make art. However, students in my college art classes were more hesitant and self-conscious about drawing and did not believe they could progress artistically. Many of these students had abandoned drawing in elementary or middle school. This pattern evokes the U curve of …

Psychometric Properties Of The Survey On Flourishing (Surf) In A Nationally Representative Adolescent Sample, Gus C. Salazar
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Adolescent subjective well-being is a topic that has gained significant focus over recent years. This focus is reflected in the formation of measurement tools and interventions used to better understand and improve adolescent mental health. While these are important steps, there still exist problems related to adolescent subjective well-being measurement. Notably, current measurement tools are limited in their content, applicability to various populations, and in their accessibility. Aims: The purpose of this paper is to examine the psychometric properties of the Survey on Flourishing (SURF) when used with a nationally representative adolescent sample. The SURF aims to address some …
Parental Incarceration As A Predictor Of Legal Cynicism, Mackenzie Joy Heim
Parental Incarceration As A Predictor Of Legal Cynicism, Mackenzie Joy Heim
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have established that legal cynicism is linked to violence, deviant behavior, and crime. In response to the potentially dangerous implications of a legally cynical society, research in recent years has attempted to identify experiences and conditions that play a role in the development of legal attitudes. Given that youths' familial and social conditions appear to be influential predictors, this study tests the relationship between parental incarceration and legal cynicism. Data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study were used for this analysis. Results from three OLS regression models indicate that parental incarceration is not a significant predictor of …
The Role Of Bacterial Genotype In The Persistence Of The Microbiota Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Sarah J. Gottfredson
The Role Of Bacterial Genotype In The Persistence Of The Microbiota Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Sarah J. Gottfredson
Theses and Dissertations
In this work we use the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model to identify bacterial genes that help bacteria to persist in their animal hosts. Early work on this model system established that dietary replenishment drives the composition of the D. melanogaster gut microbiota, and subsequent research has shown that some bacterial strains can colonize the fly for much longer than the flow of bulk diet through the gut. In this work we reveal that bacterial genes influence bacterial persistence by studying the correlation between bacterial genotype and persistence in the D. melanogaster gut microbiota. We performed an initial …
Witches, Victims, And Villains: #Metoo And The Political Polarization Of Sexual Violence, Hannah Shoaf
Witches, Victims, And Villains: #Metoo And The Political Polarization Of Sexual Violence, Hannah Shoaf
Theses and Dissertations
The MeToo movement, which sought to combat sexual violence, evolved into a partisan problem, where support for or against the movement fell across party lines. This polarization negatively impacted the progress of the MeToo movement, fitting the larger pattern of increasing polarization in the United States. My thesis seeks to understand the politicized nature of sexual violence and to explore what language and themes are drawn on to politicize conversations around sexual violence by using the MeToo movement as a case study. My thesis found that the political polarization of sexual violence increased during the MeToo movement (and especially during …
How Failures Cascade In Software Systems, Barbara W. Chamberlin
How Failures Cascade In Software Systems, Barbara W. Chamberlin
Theses and Dissertations
Cascading failures involve a failure in one system component that triggers failures in successive system components, potentially leading to system wide failures. While frequently used fault tolerant techniques can reduce the severity and the frequency of such failures, they continue to occur in practice. To better understand how failures cascade, we have conducted a qualitative analysis of 55 cascading failures, described in 26 publicly available incident reports. Through this analysis we have identified 16 types of cascading mechanisms (organized into eight categories) that capture the nature of the system interactions that contribute to cascading failures. We also discuss three themes …
Student Perspectives On Feedback In A Spanish Medical Interpreting Course, Allison Rebecca Brimhall
Student Perspectives On Feedback In A Spanish Medical Interpreting Course, Allison Rebecca Brimhall
Theses and Dissertations
Medical interpreter education is a fast-growing field in which learners sometimes receive inadequate feedback to help them improve their interpreting skills (Sultanić, 2021). This qualitative study focused on students’ perspectives on the different types of feedback given in a university Spanish medical interpreting course. Interviews and written reflections were analyzed to investigate what students personally considered to be the outcomes of the class and how feedback given in the course was associated with their development of interpreting skills and self-efficacy. Students reported that they found the most meaningful improvement through (1) guided self-assessment to discover gaps in their abilities, (2) …
