Exposure To Violence And Instability Among Children In Palestine, Grace Andros
Exposure To Violence And Instability Among Children In Palestine, Grace Andros
Ballard Brief
Exposure to violence and instability can cause mental and physical challenges among children, who are one of the most vulnerable populations in the world. Palestinian children have long been exposed to violence and instability due to military conflict, forced displacement, and lack of access to essential resources like food, water, and electricity. The volatile political situation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the unstable Palestinian governments exacerbates these issues. As a result of being exposed to high levels of violence and instability, Palestinian children experience PTSD, exhibit high levels of aggression, and face physical injuries and death. Legal aid and advocacy …
Period Poverty In The United States, Katie Krumperman
Period Poverty In The United States, Katie Krumperman
Ballard Brief
Period poverty is the lack of access to menstrual products and inadequate education surrounding menstruation. Period poverty affects menstruators worldwide, including those in the United States. In a 2019 study, 64% of menstruators noted that they struggled to afford menstrual products within the last year. Stemming from the cost of products, stigmas, education, and the world pandemic, those who menstruate struggle to afford menstruation products and have adequate education on the subject. The effects of period poverty include effects on menstruators' physical and mental health as well as their productivity at work. Lawmakers are fighting to end period poverty with …

Latest Research: Summary 5. A Review On The Impact Of Climate Change On Food Security And Malnutrition In The Sahel Region Of Cameroon
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Climate change has direct and indirect impacts on human health. One indirect impact is food insecurity, which can lead to malnutrition. In the Sahel region of Cameroon, the population regularly experiences high levels of malnutrition, because harsh climate conditions (including extreme drought) have a negative influence on agriculture. In particular, the extreme drought conditions lead to a reduction in agricultural production, an important parameter of food security.

Forgotten Brother Reuben Lewis: Missouri River Fur Trader And Indian Agent For The Arkansas Cherokees, Jay H. Buckley, Deveney Reber
Faculty Publications
Reuben Lewis was born in 1777, the fourth and youngest child of William Lewis and Lucy Meriwether. Their oldest child, Jane, married and lived out her days at Locust Hill, the family estate in Virginia. The Lewis’ second child, baby Lucinda, died in infancy. Their third child, Meriwether – the closest in age and friendship to Reuben – became the famous first half of the Lewis and Clark Expedition which explored the uncharted West before he met his tragic and mysterious death on the Natchez Trace in Tennessee. While Reuben’s life has been rightly overshadowed by his older brother Meriwether’s …

Dengue Fever In South And Southeast Asia, Mikaela D. Lubin
Ballard Brief
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that impacts South and Southeast Asia at significant rates. It is carried primarily by the aedes aegypti mosquito, a species that thrives in warm, tropical climates. Features of dengue include excruciating pain and, in severe cases, internal bleeding, shock, and death. The spread of dengue in South and Southeast Asia is due to several factors, including advancements in transportation, poor preventative measures, poor sanitation, and subsequent standing water, which is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Dengue causes many negative consequences on individuals and communities it affects, including pain and suffering, lasting physiological effects, …

The Effect Of Alcohol On Lipid Membrane-Membrane Fusion And Snare Proteins, Robert E. Coffman
Theses and Dissertations
Currently the treatment of alcohol use disorder is very difficult and often requires the combination of therapy and medications, with many who undertake treatment experiencing relapse over time. There is also no treatment in use to prevent the development of alcohol use disorder. It is the aim of this work to provide information that may be useful for the development of a preventative treatment for developing alcohol use disorder by elucidating more of the acute effects of alcohol use. It is known that these effects originate in the brain. Within the brain are circuits made up of neurons that communicate …

Enlisting School Faculty To Help Identify Childhood Sexual Abuse In Elementary Students And Prevent Personality Disorders In Adolescents, Mckell Lindsay
Enlisting School Faculty To Help Identify Childhood Sexual Abuse In Elementary Students And Prevent Personality Disorders In Adolescents, Mckell Lindsay
Student Works
One out of 10 children are abused before the age of 18 (Darkness to Light, 2015). They are often abused by parents or family members, demonstrating that elementary school faculty should be enlisted to help recognize and report childhood sexual abuse (Alvarez et al., 2004; United States Government Accountability Office, 2014). Trainings should be provided to educators on how to best help children in this situation (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2003). Once teachers report abuse, children can receive the help they need through CBT, TF-CBT, art therapy, and group therapy (Devlin et al., 2019; Kim et al., …

Diagnostic blood tests can guide the administration of healthcare to save and improve lives. Most clinical biosensing blood tests require a trained technician and specialized equipment to process samples and interpret results, which greatly limits test accessibility. Colorimetric paper-based diagnostics have an equipment-free readout, but raw blood obscures a colorimetric response which has motivated diverse efforts to develop blood sample processing techniques. This work uses inexpensive readily-available materials to engineer user-friendly dilution and filtration methods for blood sample collection and processing to enable a proof-of-concept colorimetric biosensor that is responsive to glutamine in 50 µL blood drop samples in less …
Inadequate Immigration System For Asylum Seekers At The Us-Mexico Border, Kyli F. Soug
Inadequate Immigration System For Asylum Seekers At The Us-Mexico Border, Kyli F. Soug
Ballard Brief
The history of immigration in the US goes back to its founding. However, in recent years, immigration trends at the US-Mexico border have gained media and political attention as more migrants flee to the border and face challenges as they seek refuge in the US. The inadequate immigration system has been exacerbated as legislation like the Migrant Protection Protocols and metering complicates the legal system and forces asylum seekers into border towns. Border patrol's misuse of resources and insufficient immigration data also contributes to the inadequate immigration system. Families and individuals seeking legal asylum at the border are being detained …
Effects Of Plastic And Waste Pollution On Ocean Communities In The Asian Pacific Region, Whitney Kingsolver
Effects Of Plastic And Waste Pollution On Ocean Communities In The Asian Pacific Region, Whitney Kingsolver
Ballard Brief
Plastic and waste pollution is a global problem, but it affects ocean communities in the Asia Pacific Region (APR) the most due to their lack of resources to process the pollution. Additionally, low-income areas in these countries need access to sustainable non-plastic packaging options, which increases the amount of plastic generated. Direct pollution leads to poor ocean health and the disruption of important industries like tourism or fishing. Plastic pollutants eventually break down, which creates microplastics and releases toxic chemicals. These pollutants damage ecosystems and severely harm marine life. The overwhelming amount of waste pollution in the APR also damages …

Contraceptive Use, Intent, And Autonomy By Age In Nigeria, Johanna Esplin Hoffart
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
Although extant literature has documented low contraceptive use among Nigerian women and discussed potential factors contributing to these low rates ("World Population Sheet 2020"), the difference between contraceptive use and intention has not been adequately explored. Much of the focus in research and family planning programs and interventions has been placed on teenagers, leading to lack of understanding regarding the experience of older women (OlaOlorun 2013).

The Costs Of A Free And Public Education: An Analysis Of A School District's Student Fees, Jacob D. Skousen, Ellianna Rodriguez
BYU Education & Law Journal
Since the late 1800s U.S. states have provided a “centrally administered organization of public schools, overseen by a state superintendent or department of education and financed by state income tax revenues in addition to local taxes.” States have governed a system of public schools through the states’ constitutions. Each state’s constitution has a statement identifying the state as being responsible to provide its citizenry with a public education and in the majority of states’ constitutions there is further clarification noting that this education is provided free of charge. An example of this statement can be found in Nevada’s State Constitution, …

The Dual Role Of The Campus Police Officer At Public Institutions Of Higher Education, Anne Walther
The Dual Role Of The Campus Police Officer At Public Institutions Of Higher Education, Anne Walther
BYU Education & Law Journal
The role of campus police officers at public institutions of higher education is multifaceted and not so clearly defined. Campus police officers are there to enforce the law, protect the students, and ensure campus safety. However, these officers also have to manage the responsibilities and privileges that come with holding the dual role as both a law enforcement officer and a school official. For example, while police officers at these institutions carry out many traditional police functions such as investigating criminal offenses, making arrests, and enforcing the law; they often also have additional responsibilities that fall outside of those typical …
Judicial Murder: The Witch-Craze In Germany And Switzerland, Albert Winkler
Judicial Murder: The Witch-Craze In Germany And Switzerland, Albert Winkler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Among the most remarkable and puzzling social, religious and legal movements of the late Middle Ages and Early Modern periods of European history were the witch-hunts. Historians have often disagreed on the exact time frame of the witch-craze, but these actions largely spanned three centuries roughly from 1450 to 1750, most of which took place from 1500 to 1650. Some estimates on the number of people accused of witchcraft and those executed for the supposed crime reach into the hundreds of thousands. Professor Nachman Ben-Yahuda has stated, “From the early decades of the fourteenth century until 1650, continental Europeans executed …

Moses As Midwife: What The Exodus Birth Story Teaches About Motherhood And Christ, Becky Holderness Tilton
Moses As Midwife: What The Exodus Birth Story Teaches About Motherhood And Christ, Becky Holderness Tilton
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
This work explores an alternative interpretation of the Exodus narrative as a metaphor for childbirth. Gleaning from Old Testament and Judaic sources, we find rich female birth and salvific imagery in the saga of the migration of the children of Israel and the Passover itself. This perspective of sacred childbirth, when coupled with traditional Christian interpretations of the first Passover, ultimately paints an enhanced picture of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Hamlet In Cinema: Oedipus Lives On, Keolanani Kinghorn
Hamlet In Cinema: Oedipus Lives On, Keolanani Kinghorn
Quidditas
I have often questioned why Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a play more than 400 years old, remains tied to a century-old Freudian concept. Since Freud’s Oedipus Complex has been disproven, what purpose does it still serve and why are directors still intrigued by this interpretation of Hamlet? In 1949, Dr. Ernest Jones published his book, Hamlet and Oedipus (1949),1 but at the time he was also collaborating with Laurence Olivier to create the first movie adaptation of Hamlet to embrace the Oedipus Complex. I believe that because of Jones and Olivier Shakespeare’s Hamlet will always be connected to psychoanalysis. While …
